hose were the words spoken by Richard Downing Airport Administrator Bethel Toler at last week’s signing of a grant from the FAA that will allow the airport to begin the much needed expansion of the runway to 5,000 feet. “Everyone has done a tremendous job – every-

one worked together to make this happen”, said Toler. Congressman Zach Space was on hand for the signing – and commented, “This is your money – our money. This is an example of something good coming from Washington D.C. and the Congress. This runway extension is very

important to not only Coshocton but to the surrounding area. As the economy changes, we need to adapt to the changing needs. This will allow this area to compete on a more regional level”.

oes it seem to you – like me – that as an Ohio sports fan we are just cursed? I am, of course, talking about our beloved Buckeyes loss to USC on Saturday night. Now we not only have to endure “The Drive”, “The Fumble”, “The Bloop Single” but now added on top of that list is a cocky blonde haired surfer dude’s 0056_091609

“drive” to win the game in the midst of 106,000 screaming fans for the Trojans in the waning moments. Will this ever stop? I am sure that many sports fans can conjure up significantly more less than pleasant memories and phrases for an Ohio sports fan. But let’s not. The Buckeyes should have won the game by 20 points. Coach Tressel (and I adore and respect Coach T!) made a couple of errors that proved costly. One occurred before the end of the second half by not running the clock out and another when we didn’t kick the long field goal. The Buckeyes kicker can make ‘em from 60 yards plus and

you will see that done yet this year. Oh, and if this isn’t bad enough – those guys up north may have turned the corner with that big win over the Irish. As usual, we’ll find out in November. Locally, our community lost someone that, while I did not know her that well, was a familiar face to many. Marge Ogle passed away last week and it was good to see her family gathered at the old homestead on 541 Sunday evening. One of the kids told me that Marge looked forward to Sunday evening dinner with her family more than anything else. I can recall that on virtually every Sunday evening when I drove past the Ogle home that the family was gathered together. During the spring and summer months the grand-kids and greatgrandkids would be outside running around playing. What a blessing this must have been for Marge and the Ogle family. Do you take the time to gather with friends and family? Or are you too busy running to and fro doing all those “busy” things? If so, slow down. Because one day, those family gettogethers will be just another distant memory. Like the Ogle’s, enjoy them now. We will bring up this next topic very carefully – but we are urging you to vote “yes” on issue 2 this fall. This issue – and we will discuss it in more detail in upcoming issues – has to do with our agricultural industry and the fight that is looming over control of Ohio’s farmland and livestock. Issue 2 is a bi-partisan resolution that is being placed on the ballot by Ohio’s farmers, ranchers and more. This measure is

being placed on the ballot to be proactive. We urge you to visit the website located at www.ohiolivestockcare.com for more information and how this issue could impact our lives as Ohioans. Agriculture is our state’s number one industry and is certainly Coshocton County’s number one industry. The Coshocton County Beacon supports our farmers and agriculture. Finally, we are excited to announce that The Coshocton County Beacon will be shifting to a weekly requestor publication beginning with the October 14 issue! Unless you picked up your copy of The Beacon at a store or business location this week you will find a yellow postcard inside. We are asking you to fill this out and mail it back to us with your signature – or you can place it in our drop-box after office hours if you wish to save a post card stamp. You can also sign up online at www. iwantmybeacon.com if you prefer the modern technology! By shifting to a requestor publication, we can now mail The Beacon to anyone that requests it – through the mail – and still for free – but you must request it. We are tremendously excited to be able to offer continued free mail delivery of The Beacon to residents of Coshocton County and to finally provide a weekly newspaper to the community! Your support – our readers and advertisers – has made this possible and we are very grateful. Thank you.

istory and remembrance will be part of the West Lafayette Fireman’s Festival this year. The Fireman’s Fall Festival is this Saturday, September 19 on Oak Street and surrounding Burt Park. Committee Chair Paula Cheney says that she hopes the festival attracts a lot of people because the event is “a whole day this year and is packed full of entertainment for all ages.” Sponsored by the West Lafayette Volunteer Fire Department, the family-oriented celebration is held in an effort to raise money for equipment and operating expenses. “The fundraiser is important to the community, because the community is important to the firemen,” says Cheney, “that is why they do it.” In years past, the Fireman’s Festival has been held for only half of a day on a Saturday during September. Chief Gaylord Hill says, “I think (the festival is important) because residents know too that there is not a lot of money in the department, and we need operating expenses in order to serve them.” Cheney says six new and different fun-filled activities are slated this year, starting off with the Pancake Breakfast at 7 am, served by the firemen, and a 5-K run and walk. A big draw this year for the village also says Cheney, should be the New York Fire Trucks which were (FDNY) of the emergency efforts on September 11, 2001. Captain Toby Manning helped line-up the attraction and says that the fire-trucks are the real deal. “The engines are authentic from a fire department in New York, says Manning, “The trucks are refurbished as they were used in service that day.” The City of New York auctioned them of years ago in an effort to raise funds to restore the Twin Towers area and build memorials there. Manning says the trucks were knee-deep in the disaster along with fire-fighters attempting to save as many people as they could. “One truck was actually buried to its fenderwells in debris, and it stayed running… it actually was in the area when the towers fell,” Manning said. The trucks supplied water to the towers from the Hudson River and surrounding areas that day. Manning said he was told by firefighters that if a truck could operate, stranded or not, it was to pump water wherever it could. The engines are now show- trucks at festivals and similar events around the United States. The West Lafayette Fireman’s Fall Festival is centered on fun for all as it also includes blow-ups rides for the kids, finger-printing by the West Lafayette Police Department, home-made ice-cream, a display by the Antique Tractor Club, a pumpkin decorating contest and more. The day doesn’t stop there, says Cheney. Some

other new attractions include a landing by MedFlight which is sure to draw some eyes to the sky as well, an apple pie- baking contest and auction, and a performance by the Boots and Buckles dance group. Some monies generated from participation fees for the 5-K walk and run, corn hole, and pie and craft auction benefit the department but also ultimately the community says Fire Captain Chad Hains. “We are thrilled with any amount that is made, “Hains says, “We’re happy that the community supports us, so we can support them.” The fire-department members do have a wishlist that they would like to start working towards with proceeds made. Captain Damon Gould says he hopes the longer- day will assist with meeting that goal too. “The last festival we made about $1,500.00,” Gould said, “We hope to do better this year.” Fire Chief Gaylord Hill says, “A new engine has been on our wish-list for years.” Hill says that a new engine costs about $400,000. Proceeds from the last fundraising festival were used towards turn-out gear and updating a rescue boat and revamping an accommodating engine. Hill says that he realizes money is tight in this area, but appreciates everything the community can do. “We are in a rural society and we know that it is a small industry area,” says Hill. “The bulk of our population is retirees, but they too need our services.” Hill is hopeful that somewhere down the line the firehouse can be replaced. He says though the department takes care of its dollars and materials, “We would like another building,” says Hill, “This station is 50 years old, though it only looks like ten.” The village approved that the fire-department purchase land and a nearby building behind the present location years ago in hopes that someday a new station could be built on that lot. Those plans have not yet come to fruition, however. Hill says when the weather takes its toll is usually when citizens need the department the most, but it’s also when the need to be better- equipped is most evident too. “It’s crazy for the guys to run to the trucks from across the road and more,” says Hill, “In the freezing weather especially.” He says some funds generated from the Fall Festival are also used to send members to required classes which also can get expensive, but he says the training “is important to what we do here.” “There are roots here,” says Hill, “We know where we are coming from and the people we protect.” Cheney says the day is an inexpensive way to have fun with the family close to home and she hopes “the day brings out a crowd.” There is no admission to the festival.

Coshocton County Commissioner Gary Fischer commented, “This is a terrific economic impact for our community. This is just another piece to help us move forward and is a really good example of what happens when everyone works together for a common goal. We really appreciate what Congressman Space and State Rep. Balderson have done to help move this project forward”. Commissioner D. Curtis Lee added, “This is just a huge day for Coshocton County – the economic impact will be positive and we want to thank the board – past and present for their foresight and energy. We especially want to thank Congressman Space, State Rep. Balderson, T.J. Justice at the Port Authority and the two local foundations for their support”. Kathy Thompson, former Airport board member, Coshocton County Commissioner and current Executive Director of the Coshocton Foundation, said, “I started on the airport board in 1996 and we said this day would never happen. But we kept trying. This is really exciting for me, having worked on a previous FAA grant – the airport is very close to my heart. When I learned that our distribution committee (of the Coshocton Foundation) had authorized a grant of $100,000 – I was excited! This is just an exciting day and this airport is a jewel for our community. We’ve known that this extension is critical to our economic growth – I’m just delighted”. (Editor’s Note – watch upcoming issues of The Beacon for updates on the airport extension)

over until the runway is truly at 5,000 feet. These grants awarded today will take us to 4,400 feet and the funding is almost there that will take us to 5,000 feet. The next big hoop is instruments that will allow precision approaches – for low visibility and bad weather landings. We’re still working towards that goal but this is a huge step forward!” Toler added, “The money has been appropriated to take the runway from 4,400 feet to 5,000 feet. We are just waiting to hear that it has been finalized”. Toler also added, “Local contractors will win in this venture. The lowest bids were from William Albert Excavating for the excavation work and Hilscher-Clarke Electric for the electrical part of the job”. Coshocton Port Authority Director T. J. Justice stated, “This adds another significant asset to our economic development toolbox and really stands as a community success”. State Representative Troy Balderson said, “This is what a stimulus package can be”.

0050_091609

Congressman Space also thanked State Representative Troy Balderson for his untiring efforts. Bethel Toler told those gathered, including Coshocton County Commissioners D. Curtis Lee, Gary Fischer and Dane Shryock that this was truly an example of, “Everyone coming together – I’m real proud of our government, our airport board, our city and our county”. Mayor of Coshocton Steve Mercer said, “What is good for the city is good for the county, and what is good for the county is good for the city”. This will be a tremendous asset for Coshocton”. The ceremony was observing the awarding of a grant from the FAA in the amount of $431,500. In addition, the airport received a grant in the amount of $100,000 from the Montgomery Foundation and a grant in the amount of $100,000 from the Coshocton Foundation. Dr. Jerold Meyer, President of the Richard Downing Airport Board, remarked, “We’re very, very happy that this is done but the work is not

"He had made so many friends from other schools through playing soccer and had connections with a lot of kids." Even if you don't want to run or walk in the event, Miller says to come out and enjoy

"We are excited that a new course has been established through Lake Park and the soccer field area for this run." The organizers hope to make this an annual event and are so thankful that the community and businesses have come together to make this a success. "It has been fulfilling to see Todd and Amy getting excited about this," said Miller. "I'm sure there are going to be a lot of tears there that day, too."

The race begins at 3:00 p.m. with registration from 1:30 – 2:30 at the picnic shelter located behind the Lake Park Pavilion. "We decided to hold this event on what would have been Derek's 15th birthday," said Amy Brown, Derek's mother. "Our friends wanted to organize this for us. We have such a wonderful group of friends. We feel we are truly blessed." Valerie Miller and Krista Belt have headed up the organization efforts. "We're hoping for around 350 participants," said Miller. "There have been many family friends working on this project. We knew we wanted to do something for the family to be able to give in Derek's name. We pretty much started working on this right after the funeral last December. Amy's brother and sisterin-law are both runners, so it seemed this would be a good project." Miller says that Derek, who had been a student at River View, excelled in athletics and his favorite sport was soccer, which he started

An enthusiastic and supportive crowd gathered at the Towne Centre Civic Hall for the fourth annual Coshocton Business & Professional Women’s cake auction. This

received from the community this year – I had a fantastic committee that made phone calls to secure cakes and follow-up. We had four cakes at the deadline so that follow-up was critical in making this event a success! Mary Mason of Agents Realty & Auction Service, volunteered her services along with daughter Sheri Fortune, and said, “It’s always very fun to work with my daughter and the ladies of the BPW are tireless in giving back to the community. They are so supportive of women in business and the community”. This cake auction creates a bit of competitiveness with our local businesses and its such great fun to do these kinds of events as an auctioneer. As far as why I donate my time to an event like this, it’s all part of giving back to the community. I appreciate the community and what it’s done for me. The BPW is all about helping women”. In a twist of irony as they are celebrating their 100th anniversary this month, Coshocton Hospital won the “Most Unusual” and “Peoples Choice” award with a “baby” cake baked by Paula Duling. Representing the hospital were Bob Miller and Dave Powers who said, “We’re both very proud of the effort our staff puts into everything – whether it’s patient care, dietary or working on a cake for an event like this. Their dedication has helped us be around and serving the community for 100 years”.

The River View Music Department and Booster club combined efforts on Saturday morning, Sept. 12 to raise funds for a trip to Disney World in June, 2010. Dawn Anglin, spokesperson for the event, said, “Our goal is to raise money to get to Disney in June – we had to cancel last year due to a lack of funds – that was heartbreaking for the kids – we don’t want that to happen again this year. We decided to start right off the bat at the beginning of the school year that we’re working hard as a music department to raise the funds. I’m very proud of the kids – and the cakes they made for the cake walk – all Disney themed of course – are awesome! The cost for the buses alone to get us to Disney (Band and choir members) is $14,000. That does not include the fees to get us into Disney. We want to at least defray the cost of the transportation for the kids.” If

I certainly want to thank all of our supporters and donor’s that made this event possible. Especially The Moran Family, Frontier Power, The Marathon Station, Baker’s IGA, Wal-Mart, Buehler’s, the RV Music Dept. and several families”. In attendance at the breakfast were the River View varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams, fueling up prior to their quad event. River View varsity volleyball coach Carrie Bahmer said, “I think it’s important to support all programs here at the high school. The band did a great job advertising our quad – and it’s important to support all River View activities, regardless of the program”.

One of Coshocton’s oldest businesses, Golden’s has reopened its’ doors at 410 Main Street in Towne Centre, Coshocton. Store manager Florence Whitcomb provided The Beacon with some comments during First Friday on Sept. 4. Whitcomb managed the Fashion Bug for 19 years. “We have had such good response today. People are tickled to have a place to go to shop for women’s clothing. All we are asking of the community is that they support us. Once we clearance things out – and get rid of our previous inventory we can bring in new merchandise. What we carry will be quality merchandise at reasonable prices”. The business is owned by Weaver Enterprises and Lynn Weaver commented, “We felt there was a need for a ladies apparel store, especially since Fashion Bug closed. We took the opportunity to get Florence Whitcomb in as the store manager – she has a good following and is a real hard worker. Golden’s has always been known for quality clothing and we want to continue that tradition for Coshocton”. The business has three employees and will be open Monday thru Friday from 10 am to 6 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. You can contact Golden’s by phone at 740-623-0025.

n Saturday, September 26, a benefit will be held for Keith Stipes at the Coshocton Sportsman's Club. Keith has been diagnosed with cancer. A number of his family and friends have pulled together to host this benefit and also worked last month to renovate his home to add a ramp, making it easier for him to get into his house after he came home from the hospital. The 1978 graduate of River View is a former member of the popular local bands Apocalypse and Hillside Drive. He worked for 19 years for Apache Aggregate and for the past several years for Bill Albert as a crane operator. Keith and his wife, Michelle, have three children—Kristen and Cory Barnett and Hunter Stipes. "Keith has 1000s of friends," said Keith's mother, Darlene Stipes Daliere. "We had a lot of people here helping to build the ramp, deck, steps, retaining wall and parking area all in just three days." More than 40 people worked to complete the project as a surprise for Keith while he was in the hospital, so that it would be done the day he came home. "Keith's 12-year-old son, Hunter, was right in there helping, too,"

said Daliere. "His three brothers, Chris, Mark and David and their families were all working, too." In March of this year, Daliere says Keith discovered a lump on his neck. "He went to the cancer clinic in Pittsburgh where they discovered he had cancer in his tonsils, which he then had removed and was issued a clean bill of health," she said. "He went through radiation and chemo treatments for several weeks after he had his tonsils removed. Then in July, he had so much pain in his hip, which we later discovered was broken. His doctor requested a bone scan and found he had stage four bone cancer." Keith had hip surgery in late July and his friends and family knew it would be difficult for him to get into his home once he returned. "I called a friend of Keith's, Will Barnes, and asked if we could get a few of the guys together to put in a ramp at Keith's house before he came home from the hospital," said A.J. Stipes, Keith's sister-inlaw. "Will said, 'That's all you need to say', and he got it all organized. Keith was so emotional when he came home in August and saw all the work that had been done. It was a complete surprise to him." "Another buddy of Keith's, Scott Grisset thought it would be a good idea to get a benefit fundraiser organized for the family," said A.J. "This has been in the making for quite awhile, even before we knew about his more recent condition." Working on organizing the benefit are Jan Everhart, Linda Florence and Terrie Brown. "These three have all been involved with organizing several benefits like this," said A. J. "They have taken care of everything. They've told us 'This is for Keith and the family'." "A lot of people complain that we live in little hic Coshocton, but you just don't realize how many people here really do care until a time like this," she added. The benefit will begin at 8:00 a.m. on September 26. Breakfast will be served until 10:00 a.m. followed by a horseshoe and cornhole tournament and mini poker run. There will be an auction from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. featuring OSU, NFL, NASCAR, Lebron James and other sports

“This means a lot” Those were the words spoken by newly graduated R.N. Teresa Fowler, at the graduation ceremony held at the Triple Locks Theatre in Roscoe Village on Sunday, August 30. 16 Central Ohio Technical College graduates received their Associate Degree in Nursing diploma at the ceremony. Fowler went on to say, “The sky’s the limit now that I have my R.N. degree – and I can’t wait to see what the Lord has in store for me”. Ariel Cornell of Newcomerstown said, “It means opening up new worlds of opportunities – and being able to provide better for my family. COTC made it convenient – and the teachers are really helpful. The Coshocton campus has made this attainable”. Davina Stroia, who turned 10 on the day her mother Laura Stroia, received her degree, said, “I’m proud that she got this far and she made lots of friends – and I’m

glad she’s my Mom”. Joy DeLuca, mother of Laura, said, “I’m just really grateful that she is to this point. I’m really grateful that she is past this milestone”. Richard Prystowsky, B.A., M.A., PhD, Vice President for Academic Affairs, told the graduates, “Use your talent to help make things better for the world”. Joy Padgett, B.S., Director of Government Relations and Grants for COTC, told the graduates, ‘Find the good things each day in life and then praise them. This is one of those good days. We are very, very proud of your efforts”. Padgett continued, “Who determines whether you’re going to have a good day or not – you do! Your thoughts are what controls what happens in your life”. “How many of you dream?, asked Padgett. This ceremony is called commencement, not graduation. You are commencing, not

“The more nurses we can get, the better. We’re in Coshocton County – with one of the best technical college branches in the state, and it’s close to home”. Graduate Jennifer Sims said, “This is a milestone in my life that I’ve worked hard for – I had to postpone my career when my mom passed away from cancer. I felt this was my calling – my mom (Constance Swope) passed away ten years ago yesterday. Everyone has been so supportive – my fiancé, my friends, my family and my

two study buddy’s, Teresa Fowler and Laura Stroia. Daughter Tia Sims said, “I’m glad that she’s done”. Shelly Reigle remarked, “It feels good to be done. I continued after I got my LPN, and I went part time for three years. My mom is my biggest supporter”. Valerie Boateng, who was attending the ceremony to support husband and graduate, Kwabena, said, “We’re all very proud – everyone worked real hard to get to this day”.

This dog will hunt! The seventh annual Don McVay Sr. Memorial Hunt was recently held at Schumaker’s Farms near West Lafayette. Brian Foster, who was attending with his son Trevor, said, “This is the first time we’ve been to a show. We’ve been considering getting into this”. Son Trevor said, “I enjoyed seeing all the dogs”. Coming all the way from Paragould, Arkansas, Larry Moore told The Beacon, “We’ve heard about the McVay Memorial Hunt for a long time and decided to attend this year. Normally we don’t travel this far but we’ve heard so much about this event that we just wanted to experience it”. Moore exclaimed that he has had beagles all of his life – “We’re basically gun hunters doing field trials this weekend. The name of our kennel is Moore Boys Kennels”. Son Jake Moore said, “I’ve been around beagles all my life. I just like being around the dogs – and the thrill of the chase. I love this country – everyone is so friendly. In Arkansas we chase swamp rabbits – they can weigh up to 13 pounds”. At that point Moore had to go because as he said, “My wife is beating us and we have to get back to it”. With dog owners coming from Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, West Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, New York, Maryland and probably several states not mentioned, the McVay Memorial Hunt is now the second largest hunt around – only to the Beagle Nationals, which are also held in Coshocton each spring. The Coshocton County Beagle Club, one of the largest in the nation, hosted the event and had given out $10 gas cards to 50 out of state participants by 6:30 am on Saturday morning. tered, this is the biggest Memorial Hunt ever. Testament to this was the fact that the show continued on Sunday morning. Brian Hutton, who is the current President of the Coshocton County Beagle Club, said, “We’ve always been a strong club. We have at least 60 members and are one of the best known clubs in the U.S. It’s nice to honor a former valuable member (Don McVay Sr.) of our club – and an original member. It’s really an honor to do this – we have a tight knit club that helps out when needed – and we get a lot of support from surrounding clubs”. When asked what someone should do that is interested in beagles, Hutton said, “Come out and see a hunt. Get the kids involved – it’s getting to be more of a family oriented sport. There are basically two formats to a hunt like this, hunting beagles and performance pack. The McVay family deserves a huge thank you for all of their hard work with this event”. For more information on the Coshocton County Kennel Club, call Hutton at 740-828-2371. Vada McVay commented, “This feels tremendous. It’s just an outpouring of people coming from all over – they plan this a year ahead. I enjoy seeing the new puppies and just working with the dogs. And of course, being with my boys. This is just what Don dreamed of doing for our community, having an event that draws people from all over”. When asked what Don McVay Sr. was most known for, Vada replied, “Having outstanding beagles and working with the kids. He just loved working with the kids. Don would spend hours with the dogs and the boys, Donnie, Danny, Dave, Dick and Denny. This is really a family oriented sport”. With a lifelong dream and vision of having world champion class beagles, Don McVay Sr. would certainly be proud of the legacy he left. The sun has certainly never set on Sundown Kennels. Winning Total Dog was Max & Dan Thornsley of Coshocton with Thornsley’s Champy Girl. Winning the opposite sex Total Dog was Hazzards One Eyed Willy. The dog is owned by Josh Lafferty.

Dick Guess, manager at Hilltop Golf Course, the site for this year’s annual Coshocton County Men’s Golf Championship, said, “We’ve had a beautiful weekend for golf. Although we have a small field this year, Chad Gress and I decided this is a tradition that needs maintained in our community. This has been a part of Coshocton’s heritage for many years so we just wanted to continue it. Next year Chad (Gress) will be running it – so we’ll get it built back up”. Brad Baker, who finished second to Gress in the championship flight, said, “Chad played really well – extremely well on Saturday and made no mistakes today (Sunday). He was solid. The course was tough – playing from the blue tees adds some challenge. I just didn’t make some putts”. Gress finished with a 142 and commented, “It felt good to win. We put this together at the last minute – we hope to build this back up and make it something special. This course has been in good shape all year – they’ve built a couple of new tee boxes – that made the course play a bit longer. It’s challenging and fair”. Doug “Rowdy” Ridenbaugh won the “A” flight with a 163. Tim Beck won in “B” flight, Steve Taylor won the “C” flight and Alan Fultz took the bragging rights in “D” flight. If you are interested in serving on the committee for the county championship, please call Dick Guess at Hilltop Golf Course, 740-622-8083.

Home canning has changed greatly in the nearly 200 years since it was introduced as a way to preserve food. The newest edition of the USDA Complete Guide to Home Canning was released in March, 2009. This publication contains many researchbased recommendations for canning safer and better quality food at home. It is an invaluable resource book for persons who are canning food for the first

time. Experienced canner will find updated information to help them improve their canning practices. The cost is $10.00 at the Coshocton County OSU Extension Office located at 724 S. 7th Street, Coshocton. The first part of the USDA publication explains the scientific principles on which canning techniques are based, discusses canning equipment, and describes the proper use of

jars and lids. It describes basic canning ingredients and procedures and how to use them to achieve safe, high-quality canned products. Finally, it helps you decide whether or not and how much to can. The second part of the publication is a series of canning guides for specified foods. These guides offer detailed directions for making sugar syrups; and for canning fruits and fruit products, tomatoes

and tomato products, vegetables, red meats, poultry, seafood, and pickles and relishes. Handy guidelines for choosing the right quantities and quality of raw foods accompany each set of directions for fruits, tomatoes and vegetables. Most recipes are designed to yield a full canner load of pints or quarts. Finally, processing adjustments for altitude above seas level are given for each food.

––––––––––––––––––––––––– HEALTHY LIVING HOPE Clinic opens medicine as the means to show people our faith”. Dr. Doherty continued, “What a wonderful community. I’ve never had this outpouring of volunteer spirit. As long as the community support is there and the need is there the clinic will be here. This is a great opportunity for people in the medical training field to see real clinical medicine being applied while being trained. This will be a win-win for everyone. I get far more out of this than I put into it, that’s for sure. The patients are very thankful and that makes it all worthwhile. Chiropractors, doctors, podiatrists, surgeons have all volunteered and we will have at least two doctors here every night the clinic is open. We will also have physical and occupational therapy every week. We’re even going to have a retired ophthalmologist (Dr. Sherman) here once a month. We’re just excited to be open and able to help those in need”.

Pictured are Physicians Assistant Todd Gibson and Doctor Kevin Doherty of the new HOPE Clinic of Coshocton, which opened to receive their first patients on Thursday evening, Sept. 10 at the Coshocton County Career Center. The all volunteer clinic will receive patients each Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Career Center and is for those without medical insurance. (Beacon photo by Mark Fortune)

Giant “puffball” found!

should be solid and firm when they’re okay to eat”. The Beacon staff did some quick research on the web and the following site came up number one in our google search; “eating puffballs”. We recommend you check it out on how to properly prepare a puffball – and to ensure that you have truly found something edible – before consuming anything found in a field or forest: http://www.mssf. org/cookbook/puffballs.html. Here is more information from the website. Most puffballs are safe to eat, although rare reactions

Cleaning Clean them as necessary and dry on paper towels. Some people develop intestinal irritation from the outer covering,

so peel this layer with a knife. Cooking Some people refer to puffballs as "breakfast mushrooms" because they blend so well with eggs. But they also serve beautifully as side dishes with dinner entrees. A thick slab of puffball develops a lovely golden color when browned in butter. They are often cut into cubes for cooking. Dip slices in a batter of egg and milk and cover with bread crumbs seasoned with salt and pepper. Sauté in butter and serve with a piquant sauce as the main course for a vegetarian dinner. So, there you have it. There is plenty more on puffballs on the web or, visit our local library and do some research with an actual book in hand!

Joe Uher brought this giant “puffball” into the offices of The Beacon last week. It had a 29 ½ inch circumference and the “Washington” placed on top was for size reference. Uher said this is the biggest puffball he has ever found. He also said that you can eat a puffball if you harvest it at the right time. Uher said, “You slice it down and soak it in salt water. Then mix up a batter of egg and milk – then roll it in flour and fry it up! It has a mild mushroom taste and this is the time of year to find them in fields and woods”. Uher also commented, “The insides

have been reported. Assuming you have obtained reliable puffballs, you should still follow these steps before eating them: 1. They must be all-white inside. Any shade of yellow or purple makes them inedible or upsetting. 2. When cut, they must have a uniform internal consistency. The external appearance of immature Amanita species is similar to puffballs. However, the cap and gills of these unexpanded mushrooms become apparent when the eggshaped fungi are cut in half. The Amanita genus includes the most poisonous species of mushrooms.

With smiles as bright as the yellow tee shirts they were wearing, volunteers of the newly open HOPE Clinic of Coshocton greeted their first patients at the Coshocton County Career Center on Thursday evening, Sept. 10. Opening the doors to receive patients at 6:30 pm, local doctors, nurses, staff, church members and other volunteers are providing free medical care to those without insurance in Coshocton County each Thursday evening from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Christine Grossoehme, an LPN at Autumn Health Care, said, “I volunteered because I want to use my skills to help out in any way I can – and being a Christian – I want to show them Jesus”. Dr. Kevin Doherty commented, “I’ve done this same clinic model for 16 years now – starting with the Short North in Columbus and then in Delaware – and I haven’t seen support ever like this. Senior citizens of Coshocton received a special treat Wednesday, August 26, at the Coshocton County Senior Center. At 11 a.m., the people from the Old Time Country Freezer provided delicious homemade ice cream to over one hundred senior citizens. “It’s all about the community,” said Jody Wilson, co-owner of Old Time Country Freezer, “It’s always nice to see the people enjoy it. The older people especially like the motor and they always have old stories to tell about the past.” The ice cream churn was powered by a 1932 John Deere hit-and-miss motor. It usually takes about an hour to make the first batch. Once the ice and salt are added and the slush is chilled, the sec-

ing crushed cookies, caramel, butterscotch, chocolate syrup and nuts. If someone wanted something a little different, they could also chose to have a root beer float. The Senior Center paid a flat rate of $150 to cover the product. For the general public, the cost is $3. Mike and Jody also do other events such a carnivals, church events, and Antique Tractor Shows. Their season starts at the annual Antique Tractor Show on Memorial Day and ends at the Apple Butter Festival, which is coming up soon. Their next event will be at Autumn Health Care in midSeptember, which is open to the public. “It’s good for these people to have their family come and enjoy these events,” Mike said about his upcoming event, “These people lose a little bit of their home-life when they move into care facilities and we try to give a little bit of that back to them through these events.” After everyone was served, they gathered in the dining hall where Dan Barnes entertained with music and singing.

River Greens announces Senior Amateur results (West Lafayette, OH) River Greens Golf Club hosted the Coshocton County Senior Amateur this past weekend. The tournament flights were determined by Saturday’s play. Dan Kieffer’s 75 on Saturday put him as the First Flight Leader and held on with Sunday’s 77 to claim the championship. Don Darr (2008 Champion) and

Tom Ross tied for second place with a two day total of 154. Ross’ 74 was Sunday’s low round. Frank Hill came from one stroke back and easily won the 2nd Flight champions award with a fine 75. Ron Tisko was second and Fred Williams took home third place money.
