Our Town Stories topic is ‘My First Car’ CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON

My First Car is the topic of September’s Our Town Stories gathering, which is at noon Thursday, Sept. 13, at the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum. Join in the conversation about this special event in your or your family’s life. If you can, bring in a photo for the rest of the group to see. Perhaps there were other special times or people connected to that car. We’d love to hear those stories, too. Our Town Stories is an informal time of reminiscing about life in Coshocton 50 or more years ago. If you are too young to share a personal story or a transplant to the area, come and enjoy the stories. The discussion is always informative, fun and surprising. Free beverages and cookies will be provided, and admission for the program is free. Our Town Stories is presented on the second Thursday of each month. October’s topic is Wakes, Funerals and Cemeteries. For information, contact the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum at 622-8710 or jhmuseum@ jhmuseum.org. The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum is located at 300 N. Whitewoman St. Museum hours May through October are noon to 5 p.m. daily.

Local woman supports Obamacare LETTER TO THE EDITOR

CJ CRAWFORD

What does the new Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) mean to me? When you’ve lived with a chronic incurable illness, it honestly means the world. At the end of 1993, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. The MonSter (MS) attacks the protective covering on our nerves so they become like a cord that has been partially cut with scissors. The lamp may still work or it may not, and surely it will not work as well as before it was cut. Yep, you’ve got nerves everywhere in your body so the effects of MS are far reaching. Personally, I feel numbness throughout my body, get really tired every single day no matter how much sleep I get, and I lose my balance in the blink of an eye! Yes, there is much more, but I’ll give you the mini list. Since Obamacare passed, my health insurance has really improved. As a disabled woman, I had to give up my career and go on disability with Medicare to manage my very life with MS. I am grateful for my Medicare, and it has improved tremendously under the ACA. With better coverage, I don’t have to choose if I can see a regular doctor or not. With the economy, going to a regular doctor was a luxury, as I already must go to a neurologist and an ophthalmologist for my MS each year. It’s difficult to find the money to see a regular doctor when you must see two specialists each year. Obamacare covers me seeing my regular doctor once a year as a Wellness Visit. This means I don’t have to forgo seeing my regular doctor. I don’t have to wrestle with the monthly budget to get basic care—I just make an appointment and go. For me, it allows me to keep as healthy as possible even with a MonSter lurking in my body. My Part D prescription part of Medicare has also improved tremendously. With MS, the drugs that keep us from MonSter attacks are extremely expensive. My main drug Copaxone is nearly $4,000 a month (yes, a 30 day supply), and the shrinking donut hole provided by ACA is helping me to afford my other medications as well. I know that Obamacare has gotten a great deal of negative press. But if you use Medicare as your only health insurance and have for several years like me, you know this law has improved care. And, it has made getting care less of a strain on your budget. Make sure to check out the benefits at healthcare.gov to see how your benefits are working for you. Cj Crawford Warsaw

Artist Bryan Rapp will teach a clay sculpture class for youth from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum. Students will begin in the special exhibit gallery where they will examine styles of clay sculpture made by Native Americans and contemporary artists. They will be taught how to address a work of art, considering its content, form and its style—whether it is representational, abstract or portraiture. Participants will be learning how to make a relief sculpture and may choose to create a representational piece, using either their memory or a photo, or a free form work (abstract). Students who want to create a representational piece might want to consider making a sculpture of a pet, parent or self-portrait. Most young artists are used to creating two-dimensional works so Rapp will teach the class how to render 3-d shapes (form) as well as textures, proportion, etc. to achieve a 3-dimentional likeness (content). Students will be using air-drying clay that does not need to be fired in a kiln. The end result is very hard and durable. Works may be painted later at the museum. A number of painting options will be available. This class is geared for students 10 and older. Cost is $12 ($10 with a family membership.). Prepaid reservations must be made by Wednesday, Sept. 12. For information contact the JohnsonHumrickhouse Museum at 622-8710 or jhmuseum@jhmuseum.org.

With only two years of bowling together under their belts, local women from the Coshocton USBC Women’s Bowling Association, sponsored by International Packaging, took home the gold when they traveled to state. The team was one of one thousand bowling teams who competed at the state level. “Most of us work in the same office or the same building and we just wanted a girls’ night out together,” said Tracy Haines, a member of the team. For their efforts, the team received a jacket, a patch for their jacket, and a glass plaque from a representative of the Ohio USBC WBA. Robert Haines of International Packaging also received a plaque. At the state competition, all teams competed in a singles and doubles tour, and a team event. The scores from those tournaments were combined for the final score. The Coshocton Women’s team scored 3619. September 14th, 1952 Mystery still surrounds the Old Stone Fort in Oxford Township to this day. Who built it? What was it used for? Was it really a fort? In 1952, the Coshocton County Historical Society was in the process of restoring the old building with a dedication ceremony planned for May, 1953 as part of the Ohio sesqui-centennial. To this date in 1952, all of the masonry work had been completed by J.J. Olinger and Earl Veigel. The fort still needed a lot of work including a new roof and wood work, which would be completed by W.H. Sauerbrey, who lived near the fort. A stone plaque with the names of all who had donated to the restoration project was to be laid before the dedication ceremony.

September 12th, 1962 Hugh Williams, program director at WTNS, had just interviewed Miss Christie Boyo who was visiting Coshocton from her home country of Nigeria. While in the area, Boyo had met with officials of the local community fund and discussed fundraising plans that she could use in her native country. She had also been attending Girl Scout leadership and organizational sessions, and planned to use this knowledge in her work with Girl Guides. She was one of 16 Nigerian women leaders sponsored in this country by the U.S. government and the Women’s Africa committee. She planned to return to Nigeria with knowledge to improve social organizations in her country.

September 14th, 1972 Most people would say that cooking a big meal is hard work. But Mrs. Baer of Conesville said she liked getting busy in the kitchen and enjoyed holidays when she could cook a big meal for her family. Baer had been a teacher for 40 years and after a long day in the classroom, she liked nothing more than to head to her kitchen and start cooking. She admitted that teaching was her first passion in life with cooking coming in at a close second. She acquired most of her cooking skills from her mother and some from her husband, who managed the Isalys store in Coshocton for many years.

September 17th, 1982 Roscoe Village was planning a weekend filled with the sounds of strumming and plucking banjos during their first Banjo Weekend, which they hoped would become an annual event. The featured banjo performer was Jerry Weaver and His Good Time Jazz Band. Other local banjo players and instrumentalists were encouraged to sign up and perform for about 20 minutes each. Roscoe said the event was not intended to be a contest, just a lot of fun, music, and relaxation in an old-fashioned atmosphere. During the weekend, the Village planned to also feature special exhibits and other forms of entertainment.

He played Freedom Fest in Maine in 2001 and 2002, and played at the Northern State Fair of Maine, and also at Silver Tongue Productions, Manchester, NH in 2003. David moved back to Ohio in 2005 and formed PoorFolk, a bluegrass/rock band. After the group disbanded in 2008, he started to focus on his songwriting once again, and has been bouncing from clubs to coffee houses, and even street corners, anything to get his music heard. He’s often a featured musician at SIPS Coffee House in Mt. Vernon. His specialties in music are lyrics and rhythm guitar.

saw the need. Everybody can put something in. I don’t care if it’s a penny. It all adds up.” Biggers feels the same way about volunteers and is hoping he can get more people to donate a few hours each month. “We can’t operate without people,” Biggers said. “If we could get 20-25 people to volunteer or even 50 that would be great. We want to get people who really want to help and have a background of providing service to others. The volunteers we have are fantastic, but we can’t expect them to work this like it’s a full time job.” Anyone interested in volunteering can call the church office at 622-3632. “We will be more than happy to tell you about the application process,” Biggers said. “It won’t take long to get you up and running and through orientation.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

guidance in finding work and housing,” Lewis said. “We do this by partnering with other organizations in the community like Job and Family Services to help them find jobs and get their GED. If they are looking to further themselves with a higher, secondary education we can also help them take the steps they need to find the information on how to pursue that.” Lewis said the shelter also helps its clients with the transition out of the shelter. The change containers will be out in the public through the end of October and Lewis plans on checking them periodically during that time frame. “Everything adds up,” she said. “If you have a pocket full of loose change jingling around go ahead and drop it in the container.” According to the Rev Cliff Biggers, from the church, everyone doing a little bit can make a big difference. “We made around $2,000 with this campaign last year,” he said. “People stepped up when they

The Second Chance Homeless Shelter is in the middle of spare change drive. About 15 containers asking for change for the homeless have been left at local businesses and facilities. “All proceeds benefit the various needs we have in running the shelter,” said Barb Lewis, office manager. “There is always a need for money and gift cards to grocery stores, WalMart and gas stations.” The homeless shelter is a program of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and was reopened in September 2011. “We’ve been keeping it going since the reopening and have helped a number of people,” Lewis said. “I believe the total is 130 since 2011.” The shelter isn’t just a place for someone to stay while they are down on their luck. It also offers a case management program if people request it. “We can help them with resources and

Buckeye Brine, LLC The Buckeye Brine facility at the intersection of U.S. 36 and Airport Road for the disposal of Utica Shale oilfield fluids is moving right along. “What I really like about our layout is that no truck will ever have to backup,” said Steve Mobley, president of Buckeye Brine. “Everything is one way. The source of accidents is often trucks having to go in reverse.” A disposal well works much like an oil well in reverse. The two Buckeye Brine wells in Coshocton will inject wastewaters about a mile below the deepest freshwater. Regulations

require five barriers - three of steel pipe and two of cement - to isolate the groundwater from the saline formations that receive the brine wastes. The facility has spots for three trucks to unload at one time and have their wastewater pumped into the Buckeye Brine filtration system and then injected down the well. According to Mobley, plenty of precautions have been built into the facility to contain any potential spills. “We’ve taken everything a step further than the standards,” he said. “There are really no places to have any spills out of containment. We are state of the art. ODNR (the Ohio Department of Natural Resources) made new rules where you had to have automatic shutoffs (in case a problem occurred), but we already had that in place.” Mobley said traffic has been up and down, but he expects the facility to be busy 24/7 once the Utica Shale boom hits Coshocton County. Right now most of the facility’s traffic is coming from Pennsylvania. “I think we will service people from everywhere and they will come here many times a day,” Mobley said. “We also might help attract some tank truck companies.” It will take trucks 15 minutes to unload and Mobley believes they can get four trucks through every hour.

Rodney Adams is the landowner of the facility and manages daily operations. “I looked all over this part of the state for land,” Mobley said. “Being off of U.S. 36, it was near a light and had an entrance that could handle a lot of trucks. I didn’t want to be off some country road that wasn’t constructed for traffic.” He also said the area was geologically perfect. “It has good rock,” Mobley said. “You need it to be porous so it can accept fluid and that doesn’t just happen anywhere. I also believe Coshocton is going to have Utica Shale activity all over it.” Buckeye Brine was organized to develop the project in Coshocton. The company’s investors are from Ohio and Texas and have extensive experience in energy production and services. “We’ve tried to do everything we can to assure people that this is (environmentally) safe,” he said. “We’re excited to be here.”
