Air Show Schedule Page 2 Port Authority Update Page 6 2008 Area High School Fall Sports Teams & Marching Bands Inside! Skydivers Cindy Irish and Brenda O’Brien from Michigan are passionate about jumping out of planes. They are members of the Misty Blues All Woman Skydiving Team, the only one of its kind. Irish has been with the team for ten years and has been jumping from planes for 18 years. O’Brien has been a member of the Misty Blues for five years and has been an active skydiver for 25 years. The Misty Blues will be performing at The 2008 Jones Metal Products, Co. Wings Over Coshocton Air Show on Saturday, September 20 (rain date September 21) at the Richard Downing Airport in Coshocton. The gates will open at 9:00 a.m. with the opening ceremony beginning at 1:30 p.m. and the Air Show at 2:00 p.m. Musical entertainment, kids zone

inflatable toys, bird show, model airplane show, aircraft displays, food and other vendors make the daylong event perfect for the family. “To be a Misty Blues team member you must have at least 500 jumps,” said Irish. “Then we have the training with the flags and banners that we use for our acts.” “I have learned some of the special skills needed for doing this act, such as flying the banners, by practicing at the drop zone during the ‘off’ show times,” explained O’Brien. The team jumps from a Cessna 182 plane, which Irish owns. This is a weekend hobby for all of the team members. In their weekday jobs, Irish is a financial analyst and O’Brien is an engineer for

the Michigan Department of Transportation. The other two team members include a welder and an airport owner. Irish says she has performed in shows all over the world including Japan, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Mexico and Toronto. Sometimes some interesting things happened while they are in the air. “I was doing an air show in Daytona Beach,” explained Irish. “We had blocked off our landing area according to the high tide information we were given. When we were in the air, we noticed our landing area was gone! The timing was wrong and the high tide had washed our landing area away. We had to find any open area to land.” O’Brien says she has performed throughout the United States from California to New York and places

in between. “The most memorable jump for me was when we jumped into the St. Louis State Fair and air show,” stated O’Brien. “We flew our canopies through the arch and landed at the base. We’ve also jumped into the baseball stadium in downtown Dayton, Ohio, and out of a C-130 transport plane. We’ve even jumped out of a hot air balloon.” Both Irish and O’Brien say they love meeting the people in the crowd when they land. They both especially enjoy interacting with kids. “I was around five years old when I saw skydiving for the first time,” said O’Brien. “I knew then that I would someday make a skydive. I love to see that same spark at the air shows when I’m talking with the kids.”

Aqueduct Bridge Hours of Accessibility

Daily 8:00 a.m. – Dusk. The Board of park Commissioners of the Coshocton Park District is announcing that beginning Monday, September 8th, the Aqueduct Bridge over the Walhonding River, the Towpath Bridge, will be open only during the posted hours of accessibility. This decision was made upon the recommendation of Hammontree & Associates, LTD of North Canton who recently performed a thorough inspection of the bridge, piers and abutments. An emergency repair project of the north abutment will commence once plans and funding is in place. Until that time, Park District staff will be performing a brief inspection each day prior to opening the bridge. Should that inspection show any areas of concern or the water level in the river rise above the safe recommended level, the bridge will be closed to the public. The Park District0r would like to apologize for any inconvenience this change may cause, however the safety of our customers and the preservation of the Aqueduct Bridge are of utmost importance. Any question or concerns may be directed to Lori Everhart, Park Director, at 740-622-7528 or brought to the Park

There is hardly a prettier scene than a golf course in late August or early September, save the beauty of October fall foliage. While the annual Coshocton County Golf Championship was a bit too early for the burnt oranges, bright reds and golden yellows of fall in our county, the manicured greens of Hickory Flats and Hilltop Golf Courses provided a scenic backdrop to this past weekend’s crowning of the county champions. Following a Saturday round of 18 holes at Hickory Flats Golf Course near West Lafayette, the final 18 holes was carded Sunday at Hilltop Golf Course in Coshocton. Former River View standout Chad Gress bested his high school coach, Brad Baker, with a 144 scored over the two day event. Gress explained that, ‘It feels good to win and my chipping and putting was pretty good”. Baker and Gress exchanged congratulations at the final hole and their camaraderie and friendship is evident. The event was divided by handicap into five flights – Championship, Flight A, B, C and D. Alan Todd was the “A” Flight winner with a 147 while Rocky King scored a 157 to capture “B” flight. Dave Jennings was the “C” flight champion with a 163 and Dave Hittle captured “D” flight with a 167. Hittle exclaimed upon winning his first golf event that, “It feels great! This is the first thing I’ve ever won in golf”.

Economic Development Update, Coshocton Port Authority, T.J. Justice, Executive Director This month’s column in The Beacon is intended to be a reflection of my first 18 months as a resident of Coshocton County and how I see the community evolving. Since the time that I accepted the position of Executive Director of the Coshocton Port Authority and consequently relocated to West Lafayette in February, 2007, I began to take physical and mental notes of most everything that I see, hear, read, and observe in our Coshocton County communities. As an outsider, I could and still see nothing but positive in terms of reasons for businesses to stay here and come here. Although the focus of the port authority is primarily on small business, entrepreneurial development and major manufacturing, I also discovered a much higher quality of life than where I moved from in the southern part of Ohio’s

Appalachian region. For that reason, I came here with energy and excitement. I will admit that the first six months involved a lot of exploring and increased excitement as I discovered more treasures that I did not know were here (such as enjoying a steak at Rainbow Hills Winery or a relaxing evening of wine tasting at Raven’s Glenn in West Lafayette or shopping with my daughter for prom dresses at the Unusual Junction and so on and playing softball or enjoying the amenities of Lake Park and nearby Roscoe Village). Each of these experiences, and many others, are often over looked by lifelong residents. The quality of life is outstanding in Coshocton County. By late summer last year and into early fall, as various individuals seemed to become more comfortable in visiting or approaching me with comments or ideas, the doom and gloom “Coshocton is dead and never going to come back” began to take an effect on me. It caused me to dig in which is what I have done throughout my career when I felt challenged. That caused this organization to more aggressively market its revolving loan fund, local business incentives and overall efforts to expedite what I had been developing as more long term goals. The port authority itself plays varying roles in most economic development projects. Some happen with us playing a large role, such as EVO Industries’ consolidation of manufacturing operations

in Coshocton, while others came about with us playing a very small or no role such as Novelty Advertising’s recent expansion announcement. Regardless of the port authority’s involvement, I hope the local environment contributes to such investment decisions. To that end, it’s very gratifying to see in recent months the rapid growth that has incrementally been occurring. A drive by of the former JII Publications building in Coshocton reveals a refreshed structure with Organic Technologies signage and renewed life. A stroll through Roscoe Village yields a busy Uncorked wine and cheese taste shop employing individuals after having received loan proceeds from the port authority. A cruise up Chestnut Street past Ohio 16 shows an empty and former American Electric Power building now occupied by EVO Industries which consolidated operations from Pataskala and Conesville in Coshocton bringing new jobs to the city thanks to financing from Ohio Heritage Bank and the port authority. A ride down Clow Lane in Coshocton yields Baker Highway Express of Dover moving in with the Tab Corporation. A visit to the Unusual Junction and Raven’s Glenn on U.S. 36 near West Lafayette shows a new travel shop and a new banquet facility with significant capital investments. There is so much more but such limited space here in this column. The local economy isn’t close to rebounding, it is rebounding. The county’s sales tax, despite projections made last winter to the contrary, remain on the rise. I see growth and will continue to market the opportunities here for new investment. The time is now to recognize that yesterday was just that - yesterday. Today is now. Today is new. Today is seeing a different economy emerge and emerging it is before our very own eyes. Coshocton County will no longer be dependent on one or two or three huge, major employers. We are diversifying our employment base to offer opportunities and dampen the blow if one leaves us. Over time, it will be a stronger economy with more dependable, long term returns.

New Bethel Ministries, located in the former Big Bear building on south Second Street in Coshocton, will be the site of a “Biker Sunday”, wfrom 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, on Sunday, September 21st. • Choose an indoor grill. Indoor grilling provides simple, fast and healthier cooking all year long. On colder days or days with inclement weather, contact grills such as the new George Foreman G-Broil Grill make it possible to cook healthier, flavorful dinners in minutes. This new grill drains fat away from food and has a special floating hinge that locks to allow for broiling so you can put gourmet touches

• Gain support. The Web has an overwhelming amount of fitness and nutrition information. Find a few favorite sites, such as the home pages for your favorite health and fitness magazines, or interactive sites like www.knockoutthefat.com. At this site, you can follow four individuals as they endeavor to lose weight with assistance from expert trainers and healthy cooking gadgets. Weigh in with your own personal tips and you could win prizes! Watching what you eat this fall doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice taste or flavor. Here’s a delicious, low-calorie recipe that can be prepared any season on an indoor contact grill, such as a George Foreman G-Broil Grill.

Move More - Make it a daily challenge to find ways to move your body. Climb stairs if given a choice between that and escalators or elevators. Walk your dog; chase your kids; toss balls with friends, mow the lawn. Anything that moves your limbs is not only a fitness tool, it’s a stress buster. Think ‘move’ in small increments of time. It doesn’t have to be an hour in the gym or a 45-minute aerobic dance class or tai chi or kickboxing. But that’s great when you’re up to it. Meanwhile, move more. Thought for the day: Cha, Cha, Cha…. Then do it!

A Little Wine, A Little Art and a Stroll Through the Garden What Could be Better? What started as a fall garden fair the past couple of years, has been revamped into a classic Wine, Art & Garden Festival in Historic Roscoe Village. The one-day event will take place on Saturday, September 13 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. It will bring garden and art vendors along with eight wineries with wine tastings and vending. Debbie McDonald, Marketing Manager at Roscoe Village says they expect the event to be popular with both Coshocton residents and visitors. “Wineries have become a big thing for tourists,” she said. “We wanted to make the fall garden fair a bigger event and felt the wineries and the arts and culture would be great additions.”

“Just in”

McDonald says they expect travelers to come from as far away as Cleveland and Columbus.”We’ve been promoting it all over,” she said. “We attended the Cleveland Wine Festival in June with Raven’s Glenn Winery to help promote our event. Raven’s Glenn has also been promoting at North Market in Columbus.” She said the response has been so great to the upcoming festival that they decided to add more wineries. “We originally had six participating, but felt we’d better add a couple more.” Wineries participating in the Wine, Art & Garden Festival include the three Coshocton County wineries – Raven’s Glenn, Rainbow Hills, and Shawnee Springs; plus these additional nearby wineries – Al-Bi, Swiss Heritage, Terra Cotta, The Winery at Wolf Creek and Troutman Vineyards. The event will involve wine tastings and wine sales. An engraved glass will be provided with the initial purchase of wine tasting tickets ($8 for 10 tickets). Garden lectures will take place throughout the day at the Visitor Center. Leroy

Phillips from Willowbrook Water Gardens will speak on water gardens at 10 a.m. Jeff Bazell from Flowers of the Good Earth will speak on great gardens of the world at 11 a.m. and Lois Whyde of C-TEC will speak at noon on succulents and cactus. There is no additional cost to attend the lectures. Several workshops will also be held including making cornhusk dolls, painting clay flowerpots and cotton placemats, making Victorian tussie-mussies and making a succulent wreath. Costs for the workshops vary. Roscoe Village will offer canal-era hands-on activities at the Visitor Center for $2.00 each and a free school lesson and fire brigade at the Roscoe School. The Roscoe Village Landscape Department will also be giving free tours of the Village’s main gardens at 10 a.m. in the Memorial Garden and the Buckeye Garden and at 1:00 p.m. at the Caldersburgh Garden and at Eliza’s Garden. Guests can also take a free tour of a few private Roscoe residents’ gardens from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Stop at the Main Stage for a map.

By Jan Myers

Entertainment will fill the Main Stage with music from the Claxon Family Group from 10 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. singing oldies, and contemporary favorites from the 60s through today. The Woods Tea Company musical group will perform from 1:30 until 4:00 p.m. with bluegrass, Celtic and folk song favorites. Rounding out the day’s festivities will be corn hole games, plein air drawings by Pomerene Center youth, face painting, Eliza Johnson first-person portrayal by Alice Hoover, and speakers at the Main Stage. “We have Mike English, Chef at Raven’s Glenn Winery speaking at the Main Stage at 11:00 a.m. about wine and food pairings,” said McDonald. “Then at 2:00 p.m. Bob Guilliams from Raven’s Glenn will tell us some fun things about wine and at 3:00 p.m. Lee Wyse from Rainbow Hills will tell us about the increasing popularity of Ohio wine.” For more information, contact the Roscoe Village Visitor Center at (740) 622-9310 or visit the website at www.roscoevillage. com.

Several members of the junior and senior Fair Board, junior fair auction and 4-H extension advisory committee members, Coshocton County Commissioners Gary Fischer and Larry Stahl, volunteers and donors gathered for a dedication and ceremony marking the completion of the rebuilt and expanded junior fair board office in the junior fair barn at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds on Thursday evening, September 4th. Jim Overholt, chair of the 4-H extension advisory committee, exclaimed to those gathered that, “We deeply appreciate the help from our donors, volunteers, and especially Farm Credit Services. This is for our 4-H kids”. The extra space will certainly allow for better traffic and information flow for buyers that come out to support the youth in our community on auction night, Thursday, October 2. Kelly Miller with Farm Credit Services in Coshocton explained “ Farm Credit Services is always looking for ways to show that our community is Ag oriented”. Farm Credit Services was a major contributor to the renovation with a $3500 donation. Other contributors included Smith Concrete, who donated all of the concrete for the project, the Montgomery Foundation, Steve Mercer of the Signmaker Shop, who donated a new sign proclaiming the Junior Fair Office, and the Senior Fair Board. Overholt also thanked all of the volunteers and especially master carpenter, Charles Easter.

A different activity, often based on the interests of the group, is offered at each meeting. In the past, activities have included making beads, cream puffs, and pottery. The group has also played memory games, followed clues on a treasure hunt, and shared music. The Museum Teen Volunteers has often planned activities for the wider teen community such as an open mike night and murder mysteries. The first meeting will be on September 22nd at 6:30 P.M. at the JohnsonHumrickhouse Museum, located in Roscoe Village. We meet on the lower level so use the back door entrance. The Museum Teen Volunteers was started with these hopes: 1. To involve young people in the work of the museum—from organizing its collections to helping with children’s programs. 2. Local Youth Hunter has Fun In and Out of the Woods

Kayla Landaker is pictured with two of the several buck trophies she has accumulated since beginning hunting with her dad, Tim, eight years ago. (Beacon photo by Mark Fortune)

For sixteen-year-old Kayla Landaker, a junior at River View High School, hunting has been something she’s done for about as long as she can remember. “I probably started hunting around eight years ago,” she explains. Encouraged by her father, Landaker took a Hunter Safety course at the age of nine through her involvement in 4H. After this, she began joining her dad on both deer and turkey hunts on the 60+ acres that comprise both her parents’ farm and that of her maternal grandparents. Landaker has no brothers, so bringing her along on deer hunting excursions seemed natural to her father, Tim Landaker. “I have no problem

taking Kayla with me, says her dad. “She’s a responsible hunter and never takes a bad shot.” The younger Landaker has used many types of tools in her pursuit of the “monster buck.” She’s handled a Dehr crossbow, a 410 shotgun and a 20-gage rifle. She’s also shot a 22 rifle and a 22-250 high-powered rifle while target practicing. When asked about the novelty of being a female hunter, Landaker responded, “I kind of like being one of the only girl hunters out there, cause I like to show up all the guys!” And, it’s apparent that she does exactly that… frequently. Landaker’s record boasts twelve-for-twelve, with her best buck coming in a mere
