Coshocton Cross Country Coshocton Cross Country team runs with River View COSHOCTON - Coshocton High School has a Cross Country team of two girls, Emily Casey and Madison Miller. Since Coshocton doesn’t have a full Cross Country team, the two girls run with River View’s Cross Country team and follow River View’s schedule. Here is what the two girls had to say about running with River View:

Emily: I ran cross country mostly to stay in shape for swimming my main sport and also a friend from River View convinced me and when I found out one of my best friends Maddy Miller was running, I thought I would give it a shot. Since Coshocton doesn’t have a team, Maddy Miller and I practice with River View. Running with River View is really fun. At first, I was scared that I wouldn’t know anybody and it would be awkward, but they were so nice and included Maddy and I in everything. Meeting the people I did and getting to know them is my favorite part of this whole experience. I’ve made so many new friends and so many new memories. I’ve never done a team sport and just the little time I’ve spent at River View, I’ve gotten to experience what a team is like even though I’m not really on their team. I went into this hoping it would help me get in shape for swimming so I can achieve my goals. Whether it does or not, I’m glad I decided to do this. It’s definitely something that has changed me for the better. Even though running isn’t really my thing, the people I do it with make it worth it. Maddy: My mom was a cross runner in high school and in 7th grade, I tried to figure out a way I could run before I was introduced to volleyball. Having that shut down by our absence of a team, volleyball became a part of my life and a passion of mine. I would run random 5ks until I joined our track team in junior high and high school. I honestly didn’t like running distance in junior high and my freshman year. My sophomore year, something just clicked with me and I found my love for running again. I’ve always known the River View coach and after
finding out I could possibly run with River View, I really got to work convincing my parents to take on another fall sport. This was anything but easy. Volleyball is pretty demanding on its own. My parents were really concerned about how I would make the schedules work and about my health. Volleyball would have to be my priority, but my volleyball coach has been supportive as well as my cross country coach about making things work. I’m not the only one, as I did what any other logical high school girl would do. I got my best friend, Emily to go through it all with me. The River View team has been amazing. They’ve taken Emily and I in as their own and I couldn’t be happier. The coach has worked hard to include us in a lot of activities so that the team gets to know us. We got to spend a lot of time together in the summer, considering we would all get up in the mornings to work out and run our mileage, so it was really amazing how they brought us in with open arms. They really have taught me a lot about the sport and have pushed me to become a better runner. Cross country may seem like an individual sport, but your team is more important than you would think. Cross country has really helped build up my endurance and that shows on the volleyball court. Games can go to five sets with long, hard rallies and it’s very important that we all are in shape so we can stay strong through every rally. After all of my training with cross, I have built up my stamina and resistance so I am able to fight a lot harder during my games without becoming too tired. I am very excited to see what this year will bring for Emily and me. By the end of my senior year, I would like to have my name on the record board for the girls’ mile. It may be hard to balance both sports, but I think I can speak for Emily and I when I say that I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. Contributed | Beacon
