Senior class expected to lead CHS By Josie Sellers josie@coshoctoncountybeacon.com

COSHOCTON – Senior leadership will be one of Coshocton High School’s main strengths this year on the football field. “We have a strong senior class that is all great leaders,” said Head Coach Jim Woodrum. “I also feel like we are a pretty physical team. Our weakness though is that we are young. We are going to have to build our depth and I think we can Woodrum accomplish that by the end of the season.” Joining the 12 seniors on the roster are 15 juniors, nine sophomores and 18 freshmen. “There are no newcomers,” Woodrum said. “Everyone has been with the program all along and three or four of them have been starters since they were sophomores.

“We have similar goals every year. We set weekly ones and season goals which are to win all our home games, the league and to make the playoffs.” -Jim Woodrum Head Coach Ashton Jarvis, Jonathan Eberwine and Chris Addy had real good camps. Actually a lot of the guys we expected to have good camps have.” This is Woodrum’s seventh year as head coach and 25th year with the team, which is coming off of a 7-3 season. He couldn’t think of any major holes that need filled from last season, but instead believes the team just needs some game experience. “You can practice all you want, but you’ve got to get under the lights,” Woodrum said.

“There are no newcomers. Everyone has been with the program all along and three or four of them have been starters since they were sophomores.” -Jim Woodrum Head Coach The CHS Redskins will play five games at home this year including one against new opponent Columbus Crusaders. “They replace West Holmes,” Woodrum said. “We are only playing them for one year though because Ridgewood will take that place next year.” Coshocton plays in the ECOL and Woodrum said he expects Meadowbrook to be a strong opponent again and to see a lot of improvement throughout the league. The Redskins will be led offensively this season by senior quarterback Andrew Mason. “This is his third year as quarterback and he’s got to play big for us,” Woodrum said. “Our veteran offensive line has to be leaders up front too. We are actually kind of a veteran team. We just don’t have a lot of depth after our seniors.” CHS opens its season at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26 against Fairless High School. “We have similar goals every year,” Woodrum said. “We set weekly ones and season goals which are to win all our home games, the league and to make the playoffs.” Those home games this year will be played on new artificial turf that was installed at the Redskins’ Stewart Field. “The guys are real excited to get on it,” Woodrum said. “They keep asking me about it. We are used to turf though because most of the teams we play have it.” Helping Woodrum coach the Redskins are Josh Coffman, Tim Fortney, Judd Baker, Alex Ballentine, Steve Smith, Jason Minosky, Jeremy Ady, Jamie Helter, Gary Forbes and John Lonsberry. *Practice photos taken by Josie Sellers

RHS is loaded with experience WEST LAFAYETTE – Ridgewood High School’s varsity football team will start the 2016 season with a roster packed full of experience. “We have 18 seniors and a lot of them have been starting since they were sophomores,” said Head Coach John Slusser. Those seniors are Braeden Smith, Nate Thompson, Trent Harrison, Javon Merrill, Bryce Hains, Blake Slusser Hamilton, Rayven Davidson, Kasey Bethel, Keith Leindecker, Kevin Bethel, Caleb Bowman, Michael Kelley, Jhett Slusser, Kyle Bethel, Hunter Davis, Abram Buckler, Kaden Edie and Luke Kerr. This is Slusser’s 12th season leading the Generals who finished last year 10-2. “We have a good program top to bottom,” he said. “It’s set up really well and that goes back to the 70s when Russ Ashkettle got it off the ground. We’ve been in good shape since then and the head coaches after him have just had to keep it going and not ruin it.” Slusser said this year’s team doesn’t just feature one great player, but instead a lot of really good ones.

“We have tough kids, fast kids and big kids,” he said. “It’s a really nice mix, but with experience, sometimes comes being lackadaisical. We can’t get complacent and think we have it all figured out.” Ridgewood plays in the “We have tough Inter-Valley Conference, kids, fast kids which includes East and big kids. Canton, Garaway, Malvern, Newcomerstown, It’s a really Sandy Valley, Strasburg nice mix.” and Tuscarawas Central Catholic. “The league should be -John Slusser pretty good this year,” Head Coach Slusser said. The Generals open their season at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26 at Buckeye Trail, who replaces Bellaire on their schedule. Their first home game will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2 against Waynedale. “Our goal for the season is to win them all,” Slusser said. Helping him work toward that goal will be a staff that includes Jason Prater, Chad Massie, Chad Lahna, Sam Carpenter, Chris Cabot, Dusty Shroyer, Todd Cabot, Chad Carroll, Ryan Gress, Jake Lahna, Mike Masloski, and Nate Carpenter. *Practice photos taken by Josie Sellers

RVHS football seeing lots of positives going into season By Josie Sellers josie@coshoctoncountybeacon.com

WARSAW – Coach Bob Forgrave is seeing lots of positives as the Black Bears prepare for their 2016 varsity football season. “We’ve done well in our scrimmages, better than we’ve done in the past,” he said. “We’ve moved the ball on offense and gotten some turnovers on defense. Our quarterback has been doing well, we have some good running backs and some Forgrave good wide receivers. Our work ethic on the team is very positive and that also is good.” Another positive is the coaching staff. “We have a lot of experience on it and it’s the first year that I’ve been here that we’ve had most of the same guys back,” Forgrave said. “We also now have the two quarterbacks with the most wins in River View history on our staff with Fred Williams and Mike Hemming. I don’t think any other high school, college or NFL team could say that.” The staff also includes Tyler McKee, Gary Giffin, Doug Sampsel, Tim Sposato and Ron Vipperman. Forgrave also spoke highly of the junior high coaches Aaron

Smith, Joe Alford and Cal Shrimplin. “We have seven River View graduates on our staff and they understand what we are talking about when it comes to Black Bear pride,” Forgrave said.

“We’ve done well in our scrimmages, better than we’ve done in the past. We’ve moved the ball on offense and gotten some turnovers on defense.” -Bob Forgrave Head Coach He also is excited to have four hardworking seniors on his roster of about 50 athletes. “Trace Lingo is a leader on the team,” Forgrave said. Caden Croft has been working extra hard and has changed his body physically. Shawn Stewart is very talented and Tyler Gano is a great kid.” The Black Bears, who were 1-9 last year, play in the ECOL and only have one new opponent on their schedule this season. “We dropped Zanesville and picked up Harrison Central,” Forgrave said. “They are a playoff team. They aren’t Zanesville, but they are still a good football team.” His goals for the team this year are to keep improving, play for 48 minutes, play tough, physical, clean football and eliminate mistakes and penalties. “We also want the kids to be selfless and great teammates,” Forgrave said. “You can’t be a great team without selflessness. We’ve got to be positive with one another.”

“We have seven River View graduates on our staff and they understand what we are talking about when it comes to Black Bear pride.” -Bob Forgrave Head Coach Members of the team got some extra time to work together this year by attending a seven on seven event in Dublin that included 52 teams and one in Danville that had four teams in attendance. “This also is the first year we’ve had three scrimmages so that’s five times our kids have gotten to play together before the season starts,” Forgrave said. The 2016 season is only Forgrave’s third year with the Black Bears, but in that time he’s already seen a lot of changes. “In just three to four months our Touch Down Club was able to raise $60,000 for updates to the weight room, the locker room and 25 second clocks,” he said. They’ve also been able to get new lights on the field, get new sod on the practice field and do updates to the 0072_082416

scoreboard and Forgrave said a lot of this was all donated. “There are people out there that care about our program and the kids are feeling that,” he said. River View opens its season at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26 at home against Heath. *Practice photos taken by Josie Sellers
