Air show to honor fallen pilot Beth Scott beth@coshoctoncountybeacon.com

COSHOCTON – The 2016 Coshocton Air Show will be dedicated to the memory of Jim “Fang” Maroney, a fellow pilot who attended every Coshocton air show. “He performed in every air show we had and unfortunately, he was killed in a plane crash,” said Bethel Toler, airport administrator. This year’s show will be Sept. 17 – 18 and comes after three years without having an air show. “We haven’t had it for three years because of the economy,” said Toler. “We like to wait and not do it every year because of the economy and the strain on the businesses.” Area businesses sponsor the event every other year. “Businesses step up and help us to put it on,” said Toler. “It’s very kind of them Bethel Toler to do that because it takes quite a bit of money to put this Airport Administrator show on.” This year’s show promises to be a fun-filled day for the whole family. There will be a kids fun zone, a climbing wall from the National Guard, food vendors, and recordings of airplane and military land static

Coshocton Canal Quilters reveal 2016 Opportunity Quilt

COSHOCTON – The 29th annual Coshocton Canal Quilters Quilt Show will be Friday, Aug. 12 through Sunday, Aug. 14 at the Coshocton Presbyterian Church, 142 N. Fourth St. The event will run from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and Noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. More than 200 quilts are displayed each year and this year will be no exception and will include lap, antique, wall, and wearable quilts. There will also be a special section for Veterans quilts. Other activities during the show include raffles, box lunches with a quilter, door prizes, vendors, boutiques, and a children’s quilt scavenger hunt. The Opportunity Quilt, is valued at more than $800 and there will be raffle tickets available from any quilt member or at the show for $1 or six for $5. When the theme “Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows” was chosen for the show, there was a vision of color, happiness and fun that should make this a fantastic show. The Opportunity Quilt was designed to capture this theme and set the tone for the show.

Carolyn Mann designed the quilt. The background is a modified bargello style in a rainbow of colors at the top and anchored with a green gradation on the lower half. Four big lollipop flowers form the focal point. A border of vines and yoyo flowers finish the quilt. Mann chose the fabrics. Patsy Cruxton, Nancy Hatem, Linda Mansfield, Marty McConnell, Pat Roach, and Shirley Stutz put together the strata that were used by Mann to make the background. Mann made and appliquéd the large lollipop flowers. Sue Carlisle added the border, vine and leaves. She then quilted the whole quilt and bound it. Mary Louise Newell and Jane Kreidler made the yoyo flowers for the border. Stutz attached the buttons to the flowers and several people finished the quilt by attaching the flowers. This group effort resulted in a big beautiful quilt designed to make people happy when they see it. Contributed | Beacon

Youth putting on murder-mystery comedy Josie Sellers josie@coshoctoncountybeacon.com

COSHOCTON –The Footlight Players are taking a different direction this summer with their youth production by featuring a comical, murder mystery play. “We wanted to let the kids sharpen their acting teeth and it’s good to mix it up and not be predictable,” said Shelly Lillibridge. “Murder at The Goon Show,” a killer spoof in two acts where life is all fun and games until something goes tragically wrong, is directed by Lillibridge and produced by Marissa Crawford. This murder-mystery comedy combines fun and bizarre talent show elements reminiscent of The Gong Show with the suspense of a good old-fashioned whodunit. “It kind of reminds you of a Scooby-Doo mystery,” Lillibridge said. There are 33 children in “Murder at The Goon Show.” They range in age 8 to 18 and Lillibridge said they come from every school district in the county and she even has a few homeschooled students and some from out of the county. Three children also are helping backstage, one is running the concession stand and two have taken on the lights and sound with 15-year-old Jarrett Brenneman at the helm. “They learn camaraderie and dedication because this is a huge commitment,” Lillibridge said. “There also are kids that become friends here that probably never would have met. We have a girl from River View and one from Coshocton that you can’t split apart.” This is Ruthie Cameron’s sixth production at the Triple Locks and she is enjoying the challenge of playing a mime. “I get to act out what people are saying and that’s something

I’ve never done before,” she said. “I like being in plays and getting to be a different person. It’s fun.” Cameron will be in eighth grade this fall at River View, where one of the leads in the play, Xavier Lewis will be a junior. Lewis plays Greg Lonsdale, the creator of The Goon Show. “He’s a jittery guy, but also energetic and likes to be in charge,” Lewis said. This is his first play at the Triple Locks and he was surprised to land a major role. Airport amphitheater board bringing back fireworks Josie Sellers josie@coshoctoncountybeacon.com

COSHOCTON – The Coshocton Airport Amphitheater Board is ready to welcome thousands of people to the 2016 fireworks show. This year’s show will take place on Sunday, July 3 at the Richard Downing Airport with gates opening at 5 p.m. and the fireworks taking place at 10 p.m. While waiting for the main event, attendees can watch a demonstration by the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team at 6:15 p.m., a performance by Miss Jennifer’s Dance Studio at 7 p.m. and a concert by country music artist Bryan Lewis at 8 p.m. “We learned a lot from last year mainly to expect more than what you first expect,” said Shane Pyle from the airport amphitheater board. “We estimated that we had around 4,000 cars there last year so this year we are planning for 8,000.” They’ve adjusted parking and have worked with REACT, the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Department and ODOT to ease traffic flow patterns for getting in and out of the airport because that is where the best view of the fireworks will be. “The fireworks are going to be a lot lower this year, but much more brilliant,” Pyle said. The 20 minute show, set to music and simulcast on WTNS, will be put on by Big Midget Pyro, which works through Extreme Pyrotechnics LLC. “Every year we try to do bring something new and different to the table,” said Dean Hettinger from Big Midget Pyro. Pyle said they are planning some new fireworks they’ve never done before called cake slices and using some different types of shells. “They also are going from five firing stations to eight to 10 of them so fireworks will be seen from a longer portion of the

(airport) runway,” he said. “It will be a bigger show and people on the ends will be able to see more.” Hettinger said they also are ramping up the flame effects for the show. “Adam Fischer is our designer and he’s come up with some great things that are going to be very impressive,” Hettinger said. “We actually started designing this year’s show last year when we were setting up for that one.” There will be food vendors at the show, but people are welcome to bring their own coolers with beverages and snacks. Pyle just asks that no one bring their own fireworks because it is so hot and dry right now. “If you want to bring sparklers just use them on the tarmac,” he said. “Be careful and supervise your children.” Pyle suggests that you arrive no later than 9:30 p.m. to guarantee yourself a parking spot and that you bring blankets and chairs to sit on. He noted that after the fireworks show they are hoping to have Lewis perform another set to help keep everyone from trying to leave at the same exact time. Lewis, known for his songs “The Motorized Barstool” and “I Think My Dog’s A Democrat,” also will sign autographs. The airport amphitheater board is asking for a $5 donation per vehicle, but welcomes more from anyone who is willing to give it. “There are many members of the board who believe the people of Coshocton will be very giving at the gate and we will be able to raise enough to cover the cost of the fireworks themselves and add to the amphitheater renovation fund,” Pyle said.

After the fireworks, both lanes of Airport Road will be open for only going out of the airport. The right lane must turn right and the left lane must turn left. There will be deputies directing traffic and no one will be able to go straight toward Wal-Mart. Pyle said people should expect an even better fireworks show than last year, which was pretty impressive. “Some people said last year’s show was better than Red White & Boom,” he said. The airport amphitheater board appreciates the support of the community for this event and hopes to be able to do it for years to come.

COSHOCTON – If you plan on getting fireworks or sparklers to use this Fourth of July remember one very important rule. “Use common sense,” said Dean Hettinger whose crew, Big Midget Pyro with Extreme Pyrotechnics LLC will be doing a fireworks show for the public on Sunday, July 3 at the Richard Downing Airport. He also reminded people that alcohol and fireworks do not mix and that they are an extreme fire hazard. “Most fireworks burn hotter than actual fire so if you are using them, have a water source close by,” Hettinger said. Sparklers also burn very hot and should be placed in a bucket of water when you are done lighting them. Even the professionals have to be very careful around fireworks. “We always have an ambulance and fire truck incase a fire does accidently start,” Hettinger said. “You always want to anticipate something happening and be ready for it.” His crew has protective gear including motorcycle helmets that they wear in case of an explosion. The National Council on Fireworks Safety at www.fireworkssafety.org also recommends the following tips: • Obey all local laws regarding the use of fireworks. • Know your fireworks; read the cautionary labels and performance descriptions before igniting. • A responsible adult SHOULD supervise all firework activities. Never give fireworks to children. • Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Save your alcohol for after the show. • Wear safety glasses when shooting fireworks. • Light one firework at a time and then quickly move away.

• Use fireworks OUTDOORS in a clear area; away from buildings and vehicles. • Never relight a “dud” firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water. • Always have a bucket of water and charged water hose nearby. • Never carry fireworks in your POCKET or shoot them into METAL or GLASS containers. • Do not experiment with homemade fireworks. • Dispose of spent fireworks by wetting them down and place in a metal trash can away from any building or combustible materials until the next day. • FAA regulations PROHIBIT the possession and transportation of fireworks in your checked baggage or carry-on luggage. • Report illegal explosives, like M-80s and quarter sticks, to the fire or police department.
