Tyler Share shows off the catfish he caught at the Coshocton County Kid’s Fishing Derby held May 7 at Lake Park. Share was one of hundreds of children who participated in the annual event organized by the Coshocton County Sportsmen Association (CCSA). “We had around 225 kids signed up by 11 a.m. and we are fully expecting there to be 400 plus before it’s over,” said Bob Bigrigg, treasurer of the CCSA. “They are catching the fish today too. We’ve already given out at least 20 prizes and they still have three hours to fish.” Share won $10 for his fish

because it was one of the many tagged fish released before the derby. The CCSA received financial support for this year’s derby from a $2,500 donation from America’s Farmers Grow Communities, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund and directed by local farmer Chuck Garbrandt of Coshocton County. The donation helped the CCSA and the Coshocton City and County Park District prepare for the fishing derby and will provide support for the CCSA Summer Youth Programs.

Relay for Life!

COSHOCTON - The Committee to Save the Coshocton Planetarium is reaching out to the public to help raise money to make the planetarium an instrument that can be enjoyed by students and the community. Their goal is to raise $400,000, but they need at least $200,000 to get the planetarium back to the way it was when it was located at the former Central Elementary School. The other $200,000 would go toward upgrades. “The school board approved the planetarium coming to the high school and room 412 was selected for it,” said Ron Derewecki, a retired Coshocton High School science teacher who is working with the Committee to Save the Coshocton Planetarium. “Our original timeline was to start work in June so we had all summer to work on renovations, but we don’t have the money yet to do that.” The Montgomery Foundation recently awarded the project $50,000, which brings their total amount of money raised to $197,000 if they get $75,000 that should be allocated to them from the capital budget of the state. “We do have an architect,” said Derewecki. “Frank Weaver is a Co-

Gabor racking up bowling awards josie@coshoctoncountybeacon.com

COSHOCTON - In just a few years, Jade Gabor has gone from rolling a pink Barbie bowling ball to using a 14 pound ball and competing with high school kids. Gabor, a fourth grader at Sacred Heart School, will compete Sunday, May 22, in Columbus at the Pepsi State Bowling Tournament. This is the fourth time Gabor has qualified for the tournament. In 2015 she finished 10th, in 2014 she placed second and in 2013 she finished 15th. In 2013 she also was the all-events champ at the state tournament and her team won first place at Coshocton lanes and a free entry to the Ohio State Junior USBC Tournament. She has a special cabinet just for them. One of her favorites is from a tournament she placed in with her father and she also likes the ones with statues like the high game trophy she received from Park Lanes. Gabor bowled in leagues every Saturday, but now that they are done she bowls every couple of days to practice. Practice is actually where she recorded her personal best score of 212.

Josie Sellers | Beacon

Jade Gabor is only in the fourth grade, but she already has qualified for the Pepsi State Bowling Tournament and has multiple bowling trophies.

“I got seven strikes in a row and I usually lose focus after two or three,” Gabor said. “I felt really excited and was jumping everywhere. It didn’t count for leagues though because I did it while I was practicing. My highest score in leagues is 192.” A lot of effort, work and practice have helped her succeed. “I never give up,” Gabor said. “Even when I get aggravated I keep trying.” She started bowling when she was 4-years-old and is coached by her Aunt and Uncle Michael and Denise Wiley, who coach high school bowling at Newark High School. Of all the honors Gabor has racked up, she said getting over 200 and the junior state title she won at age 7 are her two greatest accomplishments. However, she’s not done. Gabor has big plans for her bowling career. “I really want to be a professional bowler and go to Wichita State or another good bowling college,” she said. Jade is the daughter of former Coshocton resident Derric Gabor who now lives in Lancaster and Jennifer Gabor of Zanesville.

| MARK’S MUSINGS goes, “If you shoot for the stars you may hit the moon.” I recall it being something close to that. I did not take the time to Google it. Cavs are moving on. Local sports teams are moving on. And speaking of that, you will see area spring sports teams in this week’s issue of The Beacon – baseball, softball, tennis and track. We know these are a bit late as some teams are either wrapping up the season or are full on into tournament time. I think a shout out to the Coshocton Redskins boys’ baseball and girls’ softball teams on winning the ECOL championship is important. Great job young people! We were challenged this year with our own shortage of resources and getting the photos necessary for publication. Why are we doing it now? Because our young people deserve it. It’s that simple. So please thank the sponsors that made it possible. Supporting local businesses is as important in today’s

internet driven world – indeed, more important, than ever before. Local businesses provide part of the tax revenue that helps keep our economy going. Speaking of our local economy, several new businesses have either opened or are in the process of opening. This is great news for all of us. Our local farmers markets are back at it – with locally grown produce and more. Finally, I would be remiss if I did not focus part of this week’s column on the local businesses and organizations that support The Beacon and our family of publications with their marketing dollars. Today’s landscape offers many choices when it comes to investing valuable advertising and marketing dollars – and we are so grateful to the many customers that support us with a classified for sale, garage and yard sale ad, help wanted, the business and service directory, display ads in The Beacon, Portrait Magazine, CVB Magazine, the monthly Homes & More magazine, our digital platforms and more. You are a major reason why we are celebrating our eighth year of providing Coshocton County with positive news. Thank you.

hank you for all of the positive feedback regarding our redesign of Coshocton County’s only locally owned print publication. It is greatly appreciated. People taking their valuable time to offer encouragement and positive comments is part of the fuel that keeps us going during a tough week when there are more events to cover than we have the resources or the time. Thank you. It is humbling to be able to provide this wonderful community with a free publication that focuses on the positive happenings in and around Coshocton County. The support that we have received over the past eight years is tremendous and means more to us than any press association accolades could ever mean for our team and our organization. It is also important that we remain humble. The reason is simple. We know that we don’t get to everything and we also know that there are some very positive happenings that don’t receive the attention that they deserve from our publication. We certainly try and all we can do is continue to reach for that upper level that will probably remain elusive. As the old saying

The growth of a strong local hospital requires a great community, dedicated, skilled physicians and excellent employees committed to providing high quality, compassionate care. From every doctor’s office and outpatient service to radiology, heart services, emergency care, surgery and our nursing units, we are honored to care for our friends and neighbors in our hometown. Every day, our clinical staff is supported by the dedicated support staff, technicians, housekeepers and dietary staff who provide direct care to patients and their families or support those who do. COSHOCTON - William “Bill” Maxham Edwards, 79 of Coshocton, OH, died in his sleep, April 19, 2016, in Fort Myers, Florida, having fought a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer for 4 years. Bill was born April 22, 1936, in DuQuoin, IL, the son of Gilbert (Doc) and Jean (Maxham) Edwards. He grew up in Pinckneyville, IL, and then attended the University Edwards of Illinois where he received both bachelors and master’s degrees in agricultural science. Bill then moved to Ames, Iowa, where he earned a PHD in Agronomy from Iowa State University. In 1963 he married Ruth Buttermore, who survives. Bill was a veteran of the US Army where he served in Germany. He became passionate about all things

German and took his family to spend a year in Germany where he worked as a scientist at the University of Goettingen. This love of Germany led not only to travel, but to the family hosting two German exchange students: Christian Bechtloff of Hamburg, and Rahel “Rachel” Brecht of Uslar. He was employed as a soil scientist for the USDA, in Coshocton, Ohio, from 1967 till he retired in 1995. While working at the North Appalachian Experimental Watershed, he helped in the development of “No Till” farming and led research in measuring pollutants in ground water and rain water run-off. He was an avid coon hunter and outdoorsman and loved to watch coon dogs and beagles perform. He collected Indian rocks, enjoyed Sudoku, crossword puzzles, reading and travel. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Coshocton, OH, and sang in the Chancel Choir. He played trombone in the Rube Band, Coshocton Community Band, Lake Park Big Band, and in the orchestra for musicals at the Footlight Players. He was a former member of the Coshocton Community Choir and sang with the Triple Locks Barbershop Quartet. He was involved with the Fort Myers Champion Trivia Team NALB, (No Adults Left Behind) and really looked forward to the Monday evening competitions. In his retirement he loved to help people who needed help. He helped farmers, neighbors, and others. He was also a volunteer at the Pomerene Center for the Arts, Clary Gardens, and his church. Assuming the role of

Captain on the Ohio Erie Canal boat, the Monticello II, gave him the opportunity to meet and talk with people from around the world. Bill took solo trips with his pick-up and a coon dog to explore areas in the northern parts of the U.S. and Canada. He was always striving to learn how others lived and worked. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters: Eleanor Jane Johnson of San Francisco and Mary Ruth Caldwell of Dallas, and his beloved niece Allison Wright of Des Moines. Surviving in addition to his wife, Ruth are children; Elizabeth Ann “Libby” Payne of Fort Myers, Jennifer Jean Walker and her husband Kevin of Fort Myers Beach, FL, Paul Gilbert Edwards and his wife Kari of Fort Myers Beach, FL; sister Martha Ann Edwards of Chicago, IL; grandchildren Ellie Gressman, Kayla Ruth Walker and McKenzie Jean Walker. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. The Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home was entrusted with the care of Bill. A memorial service was held on Saturday, May 7th, 11:00 am, at the Grace United Methodist Church in Coshocton. Friends greeted the family before the service, in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers his family suggests contributions can be made to organizations that had Bill’s heart: Grace United Methodist Church, Pomerene Center for the Arts, Clary Gardens, or charities of your choice.

CHS grad completed tech program when COTC first opened NEWARK – As COTC celebrates its 45th anniversary it also is celebrating the 45th anniversary of a program that has been offered at COTC from the very beginning. The radiologic science technology program, known in 1971 by some as “X-Ray Technology” was one of the six degree programs that you could complete at COTC when it first opened. Diane Snow of Newark graduated in 1976. It was her class that pioneered the evolution of the three-year program to two years that is still in place today. “I graduated from Coshocton High in 1974 and then came over here right away to do the x-ray program,” said Snow. “I always knew I wanted to go into something in the medical field, but I wasn’t sure what. So I decided to give that a try. I met my husband when I was in school because we did our clinicals over at Licking Memorial, and he worked there in surgery and recovery. He’s still there. We have been married for 38 years now.” Snow recently retired from Mount Carmel East where she was a supervisor in radiation and oncology. Over the years, many COTC radiologic science technology graduates have used their degree to care for people in their communities. The Radiologic Science Technology Program at Central Ohio Technical College combines extensive classroom, laboratory and clinical learning situations to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely practice radiology.

Kindergarteners explore careers at CCCC MAY 10, 1956

The Town and Country Club played host to a rather odd luncheon. Bird cages, unbirthday cakes and vegetable gardens were among the myriad headdresses worn at the “mad-hatters” party of the Junior Woman’s Club. A contest was held in order to ascertain the most original, the prettiest and the funniest hats. Judged by Adolf Golden of Golden’s, H.P. Brashear of O’Neals, and Town and Country Club manager William Farrar. The prize for winning one of these contests was a hat box. The prize for funniest hat went to Mrs. Karr and her large-trimmed miniature circus. The most original went to Mrs. Clary’s miniature golf course. Mrs. Milligan won the prettiest hat made of purple grapes arranged on a chafing dish. A hat swap to raise money for the club was held after the contest. A style revue depicting the times of day and the gowns that should be worn during those times was held following the hat swap.

MAY 10, 1966 19-year-old sophomore Alan Keeping was among 10 delegates from Kent State University program to study in Tanzania. The trip cost $500 per student and they left that July. The students were chosen via committee as part of the $20,000 SPOT program, under the supervision of World University Services, head quartered in Geneva, Switzerland. Alan was a graduate of the 1964 class of Coshocton High School and attended the International School in Brussels in his sophomore and junior years 1961-1963.

MAY 9, 1976 The local General Electric plant recently hosted eleven visitors from France. They worked for GE’s French distributer, Comptoir Commercial D ‘Importation, and came to Coshocton to become familiar with its operations and the product line. The group represented electronic and computer companies such as Honeywell Bull, CII, Thomson CSF and TV manufacturer Reel. They stayed at the Park Hotel and got to see Coshocton. While in town they got to tour Roscoe Village and Amish Country. They also played golf for their first time. When asked what they thought about our city, they said it was very spread out and open. A French city of this size is mostly apartments with small fenced-in yards, but here it is mostly individual homes with open yards, which they said gives them a feeling of liberation.

MAY 11, 1986 Administrative assistant of Goodwill Industries had awarded the Coshocton Goodwiill, 603 Main St., the “Store of the Month” award. He presented the award to store manager Ann Kocher for the store’s outstanding performance in key areas such as appearance, customer relations and sales.

COSHOCTON – It’s never too early to start thinking about what you want to be when you grow up. Kindergarten students from Ridgewood Elementary visited the Coshocton County Career Center on May 3 and had the opportunity to learn about all 11 programs offered there. “It’s fun to teach them stuff,” said Tabby Albaugh, a junior in the culinary arts program. Peoples Bancorp Foundation, a nonprofit corporation formed to make donations in Peoples Bank market areas, donated the funds to support the 2016 summer camping season at Camp Echoing Hills, a ministry of Echoing Hills Village. Every summer, Camp Echoing Hills serves over 400 campers with developmental disabilities from all over the state of Ohio and beyond. For seven weeks, campers of all ages swim, fish, explore and celebrate their abilities on a safe, rural campus designed with their needs in mind. The funds donated will ensure that Camp Echoing Hills is able to continue offering these weeks of camp. “Thanks to the support we have received from People’s Bank our campers have opportunity to make new friends, reconnect with old ones and fellowship with one another while enjoying a fun week of camp activities,” said Lauren Unger, camp administrator. “We also have the chance to bring disability awareness to over 200 volunteers who come to serve every summer to serve our wonderful campers. CCYL April Challenge Day reviewed My name is Aselya Sposato, and I am a member of the 2016 graduating class of the Coshocton County Youth Leadership Program, otherwise known as CCYL. This month’s Challenge Day revolved around a variety of Sposato things, with a main focus on preparation for graduation ceremonies, which were to follow in the evening. We started out the day by building upon our public speaking abilities.

While working with Brad Fuller and Bart Winegar, we discussed how to improve our presentation skills with some small writing activities and presentation tips. After that we started on our group project, which involved each youth drafting a speech to give about the CCYL program at the graduation banquet. During the second half of the day, we talked specifically about what we wanted to see in Coshocton County. We thoroughly discussed the different organizations and attractions already present in the

Stutzman Farms issues voluntary recall MILLERSBURG - Stutzman Farms of Millersburg is voluntarily recalling its Savory Sprouted Spelt Crackers, Organic Puffed Spelt, Organic Spelt Berries, Organic Rolled Spelt and Organic Spelt Bran due to an undeclared wheat allergen. The following products are subject to this recall: Savory Sprouted Spelt Crackers (sold in .30 lb. packages); Organic Puffed Spelt (sold in .62 lb., .25 lb., 1.16 lb., and 6 lb. packages); Organic Spelt Berries (sold in 2 lb., 5 lb., 10 lb., 25 lb., and 50 lb. packages); Organic Rolled Spelt (sold in 1.5 lb., 4 lb., 8 lb., and 25 lb. packages); Organic Spelt Bran (sold in 1 lb. and 3 lb. packages). Products were sold directly to retailers and distributors in Ohio and Pennsylvania. All lots of product prepared, sold, or distributed from Stutzman Farms with a sell by date through 09/02/16 have been voluntarily recalled.

There are no reported illnesses to date associated with this recall. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products. The product is safe for consumption by those who do not have serious wheat allergies. Stutzman Farms became aware of the issue for the items after it was brought to our attention by the Ohio Department of Agriculture. The product labels for the milling items, which contain spelt, omitted wheat as an allergen. Customers with a wheat allergy who have purchased the affected product should dispose of it or return it to Stutzman Farms for a refund. For more information, call Stutzman Farms at 330-6774-1289 ext. 2 and leave a message. CONTRIBUTED

county that make it a great community to be part of, while also weighing the different aspects we thought would help the community’s economy and general attraction. The day proved to be quite resourceful, and it really prepped us all for graduation. It was also great to see Brad Fuller and Bart Winegar, who were our facilitators at our opening retreat in the summer. This Challenge Day taught me skills that I will take with me throughout my life. I will truly miss the CCYL program

and all of wonderful people I have met through it, but I am also excited to test out all the program has taught me for the future. For any further information regarding the CCYL program, please visit the website coshoctonfoundation.org/leadership. A special thank you to the Coshocton Foundation, Betsy Gosnell and her board, and Frontier Power for making this day possible. Contributed by Aselya Sposato

Students from the Coshocton Christian School are pictured listening to a presentation on National Day of Prayer, which was May 5. Principal Stan Zurowski explained to the students that the day was a time to pray for revival for our nation and salvation for our loved ones. He also encouraged students to pray for the political process our nation is going through and that God ordains the next person to serve as President of the United States.

Community members in Warsaw gathered at the pavilion on Main Street on May 5 to celebrate National Day of Prayer. The event was sponsored by the River View Ministerial Association and has been an annual event in the community for more than 20 years. Among other things, the group that gathered prayed for government leaders locally and nationally. “The Bible tells us to pray for our government leaders,” said Dairel Kaiser, president of the association. “As Christians, it’s really our responsibility to pray for our leaders. Our hope is that people continue to keep in mind that it’s important to pray for our government leaders. We need to be right with God in our hearts so we can pray and vote accordingly.”

Residents of Coshocton gathered at the court square on May 5 to lift their voices in song and prayer in celebration of National Day of Prayer. At 6 p.m., people were praising God through song, led by Kelly Treat. “I believe that the Lord is here,” said Pastor Larry Massie, who gave the welcome. “And I believe he can heal your personal problems and that he can heal this nation.” Curtis Lee, county commissioner, read a proclamation signed by the commissioners and Mayor Steve Mercer read the City of Coshocton proclamation. Prayers for businesses, military, churches, the drug culture, education, government, and first responders followed. Kathy Hendricks of Women of Witness led a Bible reading and the event ended with the ever-popular balloon prayer launch.

Human Trafficking Coalition forming

A Human Trafficking Coalition is being formed and will meet for the first time on Wednesday, May 18 from noon to 2 p.m. in room 150 at the Coshocton COTC Campus. On Wednesday, June 1 there will be a conference around the issue of human trafficking awareness and prevention. This conference will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 pm at Hopewell School. CONTRIBUTED

COSHOCTON - Elisha Eileen Sarah Hamric of Coshocton, has accepted membership in The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS). NSCS is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and is the nation’s only interdisciplinary honors organization for first-year and second-year college students. Membership is by invitation only, based on grade point average and class standing. NSCS has over one million lifetime members and 300 chapters in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

BOBCAT Coshocton County Wildlife Officer Jerrod Allison. “The baby is young. It had its eyes open but wasn’t able to walk yet. We couldn’t tell the age. The mom was probably moving to a new site.” The uninjured kitten was taken to Lake Metroparks in Lake County where Allison said it will be raised at Penitentiary Glenn Rehabilitation Center. “They’ve done this for us in the past and are very successful at releasing animals back out into the wild,” he said. “We can’t release it in the winter though so it will be there close to a year so it can come back when the food source is good. All indications are that it will more than likely come back to Coshocton County to join our bobcat population and hopefully live a happy life.” Anytime someone sees a bobcat dead or alive in the county they should contact Allison by calling 1-800-WILDLIFE or 740-589-9982. “We want to document where they are in the county,” he said. “They also are illegal for people to possess so if they call us it removes the temptation. We will make all attempts to come pick it up.” Allison believes it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that bobcats are in all four corners of the county and spread throughout it.

PLANETARIUM shocton High School graduate who works for a firm in Columbus that is experienced at working with older buildings and structures. Once we have the final drawings for the planetarium and the state approves them the school board can put out bids for the work.” Derewecki was planetarium director from 1971-2002 and said the planetarium was purchased through a grant written in the 1960s. The instrument is still capable of being used, but needs updated to today’s technology. They also would like to make upgrades such as adding a full dome projector and more seats. “The $200,000 will get the planetarium back to where it was, but if we don’t get all the money we will have to cut back on the upgrades,” Derewecki said. “We’ve been going on the Internet looking for foundations that could help and just checking all different kinds of avenues for donations. We’ve gotten around $3,000 from individuals and community members, but people still don’t realize we are doing this.” People also don’t realize that the planetarium is about a lot more than seeing the stars.

A baby bobcat was saved after its mother was killed in a collision with an automobile on State Route 541.

“I’ve been working here five years now and in the first year I heard about one or two, but now we get dozens

of reports about them,” he said. “Usually young males move in first to establish their own territory. Now we know we have a breeding population because of this kitten.” People, however, don’t need to worry about the bobcats though. Allison said they just need to respect them like they would any other wildlife. “They aren’t big cats by any means,” he said. “I don’t know of any people having issues with them or any major documentation of issues with livestock. They usually behave themselves pretty well.” Allison said he’s not surprised to see bobcats in Coshocton County, but he is curious to see how much farther west (in Ohio) they will move. “We have good habitat in Coshocton County, but as you move west toward Licking County the trees and woods start disappearing,” he said. “The bobcats are still new to us in Ohio and we don’t know exactly where they are going to end up. They could keep expanding west and north or stop here. It’s exciting and I think it’s cool that so far we’ve saved this kitten and hopefully will be able to get it back out there.”

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 “We can build on their knowledge and excitement about science,” Derewecki said. It’s not just about science either. Spelling lessons can be built around it for younger students, there can be art projects or even literature assignments created out of a visit to the planetarium. “You don’t have to buy a program for the planetarium either,” Derewecki said. “You build programs for each grade level based on what is being taught in the classrooms.” He also wants people to know that Coshocton is very lucky to have a planetarium. “Today they are fairly rare to have especially around here,” Derewecki said. “I believe Lancaster has one and St. Clairsville had one, but took it out.” Coshocton High School science teacher Jason Kodysz is excited about getting the planetarium up and running. “I have a background in astronomy and can think of ways the planetarium can be used in a number of classes especially physics and chemistry,” he said.

Kodysz’ new astronomy club at the high school also is looking forward to the planetarium. “I’ve been talking to my students and there is a lot of interested in this,” he said. Once the planetarium is up and running in its new location, Derewecki said who would run it and if it would be open to more than just students in the City of Coshocton would be up to the school district, but there is a possibly that the other districts could have access to it. To make a donation to the save the planetarium project, make checks payable to: Coshocton Business Development Foundation and on the memo line write planetarium fund. They can be mailed to: Save The Coshocton Planetarium, P.O. Box 1517, Coshocton, OH 43812. There also is a GoFundMe account setup. To stay up to date on the fundraising process and the quest to get the planetarium up and running, visit facebook.com/groups/savetheplanetarium.

Karen Cutshall has been a vendor at the Fresno Farmers Market since the very first day nine years ago. In total, Cutshall has 17 years experience selling her homemade noodles at a local farmers market.

10TipsforShoppingattheFarmer’sMarket 1. Get there early for the best selection. Popular items sell out fast. If you’re going to a Saturday morning market, resist the temptation to sleep in or those fresh strawberries or blueberries will be gone. 2. Know what’s in season. Avoid disappointment by knowing what produce grows in your area when. In this area of Ohio, early spring crops include asparagus, rhubarb, green onions, radishes, lettuce and other greens. Ask the growers what they’ll be bringing to market in upcoming weeks.

3. Scout out the stands. Take a stroll through the market before buying. This helps you find good deals, see what’s in season or what’s new, and find the best quality items. 4. Bring a market basket or tote bag. Sturdy bags or baskets make sure you don’t lose your precious purchases before you get to the car. Vendors will be happy, too, since it’s hard to keep enough bags on hand. 5. Be respectful of the produce. Don’t squeeze tomatoes and fruit. If you’re not sure of ripeness, ask the grower to help you.

Josie Sellers | Beacon

Mindi Duncan and Terri Lewis are pictured helping a customer at the first day of the Warsaw Farmers’ Market.

6. Buy with smaller bills. Vendors appreciate not having to give out a lot of change. Most of them round prices to the dollar or fifty cents, so smaller bills and quarters work well. 7. Don’t ask for discounts. Speaking of money, most growers, bakers and crafters work long hours for the dollars they make. Support your local economy by paying what they ask. Of course if they offer a discount, go ahead and take it! 8. Do ask for advice. Growers have lots of ideas for how to cook and serve the fruits and vegetables they sell. Some

offer recipes at their stands, and they’re usually happy to answer your questions. 9. Keep menus simple. Remember, you’re buying really fresh produce at the farmers market, so let the superior flavor shine through at mealtime. Keep preparations simple. 10. Give feedback. Tell bakers when you especially liked one of their creations. Let growers know your favorites and your ideas for cooking and serving their produce. Feedback, both positive and negative, helps vendors continue to improve what they offer.

Dogwood Festival celebrates youthful talent COSHOCTON – Music on the court square this week got people up and moving. Austyn Talbot, the 2 ½ year old granddaughter of Tom and Karen Edwards, happily danced to music played by the Coshocton High School Jazz Band on May 3.

“She is a performer,” Karen said. People also congaed to the beat of the River View Caribbean Drum group, which performed May 4 along with River View’s Jazz Band and Certified Gold. The musicians from CHS and RVHS were part of the scheduled entertainment during the annual Dogwood Festival Lunches and Performances on the Court Square from May 2-6. “The kids make this event,” said Anne Cornell, from the Pomerene Center for the Arts, which coordinated the Dogwood Festival activities. “It’s such an up feeling to hear them at their best at the end of the school year, in a beautiful space with good food and spring weather.” The Coshocton County Court Square was indeed the place to be last week for good music, entertaining shows and yummy food. Students from Ridgewood High School’s Jazz Band and chorale performed on May 5. Musician Hal Walker entertained the lunch time crowd on May 6 and the first performance of the week was from the Coshocton Christian School Drama Department. The Christian school students gave the public a sneak peak of their A Night of Music and Monologues that they presented May 6-7, at Coshocton Christian Tabernacle. “It’s a bunch of different short scenes and songs that we put together to tell a couple of different stories,” said Hannah Lanz, who teaches at the school and leads the group. “Last year we had a drama Th

Kittner earns scouting award COSHOCTON - In 2009, the National Eagle Scout Association established the Glenn A. and Melinda W. Adams National Eagle Scout Service Project of the Year Award to recognize valuable service of an exceptional nature by a Scout to a religious institution, a school, community, or other entity.

The award recognizes the Scout for his Eagle Scout leadership service project, which is part of the requirements for earning the Eagle Scout Award. Each year, local councils select a council-level winner, and from that pool, each region selects a region-level winner. A national winner is then selected from the four regional finalists. The Muskingum Valley Council held its annual National Eagle Scout Award (NESA) Gathering and Recognition Event at Dresden United Church on Saturday, April 16. Eagle Scout Seth Kittner was honored as the recipient of the Adams Eagle Scout Project of the Year Award. His Eagle Scout project was to raze and erect

a new playground for Emmanuel Lutheran Church, where the Crew meets. With more than 350 hours of volunteer service, he was able to salvage some of the former playground pieces from Lincoln Elementary School as well as use recycled tire products as mulch and build the new playground. Venturing Crew 447 Adviser Chip Udischas congratulated Kittner for his accomplishments and added, “Only four Adams awards have been presented in the council, and no more than one can be selected in a year.” CONTRIBUTED

The season got off to a great start last Saturday at Coshocton Farmers Market on Main Street, with good eats and bright blossoms to buy. Customers enjoyed toe-tapping “music to shop by” played by Abbey McClister and Cole Gable as they browsed vendors’ stands. Penny Carroll will be back this week with a great selection of perennial flowers. Steve Troendly of Victorian Rose Farm and the Snyders of Our Garden will bring hanging baskets and flowering plants for your flowerbeds. Floral pot arrangements and herb and vegetable seedlings are also available at the market. While shopping, customers can enjoy a treat of flavored popcorn, or cookies from several home bakers. They also sell fruit pies, apple dumplings, cookies, fudge, muffins and cakes, plus breads. Crafters offer unique items such as hanging kitchen towels, homemade soaps, and body scrubs and butters. This week Norma Owens will be at the market with her beautiful gourd art, from small pins to unique carved baskets. Last but definitely not least, look for early spring produce from local gardens, including asparagus, rhubarb, and green onions. You can also find farm-fresh eggs and meats. Come to the market and enjoy talking with and buying from neighbors! Here’s an easy recipe from www.rhubarbinfo.com. Crumbly-topped Rhubarb 3 cups rhubarb, diced 1 tbsp. flour ½ cup sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/8 tsp. salt 1 tbsp. water 6 tbsp. butter 6 tbsp. flour ½ cup brown sugar, firmly packed ½ cup old-fashioned or quick oats Combine rhubarb with 1 tablespoon flour, the sugar, cinnamon, salt, and water in a 10 x 6 x 2-inch baking dish. In a bowl, cream the butter with 6 tablespoons flour and the brown sugar; then stir in the oats. Sprinkle over the rhubarb mixture in baking dish. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes or until the rhubarb is tender and the top is brown. Information and recipes supplied by Mary Meyer for the Coshocton Farmers Market. The market is open 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays, from May through October, on the 300 block of Main Street, Coshocton. For more information, visit Coshocton Farmers Market on Facebook. Leadership Corner - Dave Harrison Leadership Class of 2016 COSHOCTON - Dave Harrison grew up in Coshocton and is a graduate of Ridgewood High School. He is married to Erica (Jackson) Harrison and has two children, Patrick and Mattison. The son of an electrician, Harrison Dave is from a family of electricians and after his apprenticeship, began working in the field as a journeyman electrician for 12 years. He moved on to project manager with Hilscher-Clarke

Electric, who opened a Coshocton office and has been in this position for 16 years. In his 28 years in the electrical field, Dave has seen “lots of changes in technology.” He enjoys his career and finds it to be a “very interesting and rewarding field.” He appreciates the support of his employer to allow him to be part of Leadership Coshocton County. Dave serves on the IBEW/NECA Apprenticeship Training Committee to select apprentices and also serves on the advisory committee for C-TEC. He is a

former school board member for Sacred Heart School. He hopes to become more involved with Habitat for Humanity. Dave decided to participate in Leadership Coshocton to become more involved with the community; learn more about resources and the history. Dave views the community as “very generous and rich in resources that many people aren’t aware are here.” He admits the community is struggling in some ways with the loss of industry, but is also gaining with the growth at McWane

Ductile and their pole plant as well as the Kraft expansion. He sees Coshocton as a great community; has enjoyed raising his kids here and feels safe. He would “absolutely recommend Leadership Coshocton County,” to learn more about the community - to “see what’s going on” and “learn about where you live.” He’s met some really great people, both in the program and in the community through Challenge Days.
