WARSAW – Come BY JOSIE SELLERS enjoy an evening of good music and food hosted by the River View High School Baseball team. A chicken dinner will be served from 4 to 6 p.m. and Carson Drive, featuring two River View graduates, will perform country classic rock at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 10, in the auditorium at the school. “We are doing this event as our major fundraiser for the year,” said Coach Jesse Smoulder. “We just had to order new windscreen for our outfield fence, which was a $4,000 expense. Plus, we use our money for the general upkeep of the field, for uniforms, and for needed baseball supplies. We try to spend our money on things that will benefit our current players, but our younger programs use our fields and facility free of charge, so they benefit from it as well.” The team is taking an active role in the fundraiser by selling tickets for it, working as ushers for the concert, helping to clean tables and filling a variety of other roles. “They all want nice things, so I hope they learn that they need to be motivated and work hard to earn those things,” Smoulder said. “I also hope they realize that people are gracious with their money and will support local causes. I want them to be humble and appreciative, but I also want them to remember this so they will give back when they are older.” Another part of the fundraiser is a silent auction that includes many donated items from area businesses plus tickets to a variety of attracts and some from the Cincinnati Reds and Akron Rubber Ducks. “The community support is tremendous,” Smoulder said. “It’s been tough economically in our area, yet our local businesses continue to sacrifice for the students and athletes in our area. As a teacher and coach in this community, I cannot express enough the gratitude I have and our players have for the community’s willingness to support us and the other local schools.” He also is very appreciative of Carson Drive. “Jay Dotson, a member of the band, approached us,” Smoulder said. “He attended River View and so did Patrick Winegar, another member of the band. They wanted to give back to our school. They have a great following in our area, are very talented, and we are excited to have them.” Concert admission is $10 and the concert - dinner combo is $17. Tickets are available from any player or by calling 740-202-2890 or 740824-3522 (RVHS). JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

COSHOCTON - Roscoe Village begins the 2016 Bicentennial of Caldersburgh, also known as Old Roscoe with two exciting lectures. Alice Hoover opens the lecture series with “Tales of Old Roscoe.” The program begins at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 10 in the Visitor Center Theatre. She portrays Lydia Brown, the Brickmaker’s wife of Old Roscoe. Her tales include stories of a circuit rider, the Underground Railroad, a fire, some lawsuits and economic ups and downs as well as everyday life in the village. Hoover is a graduate with honors from Otterbein University. Her husband Richard is a retired United Methodist pastor. They have two sons. Alice taught elementary school for 25 years, retiring from Coshocton Lincoln Elementary. She is the organist at the Presbyterian Church in Coshocton. As an historical dramatist she portrays 30 Biblical and historical women. An additional lecture is scheduled for Sunday, April 24. Professional Storyteller, Chris Hart will portray Noah Swayne who was a local attorney responsible for the name change from Caldersburgh to Roscoe. Swayne later became the Supreme Court Justice appointed by President Lincoln. The lecture will take place at 2 p.m. in the Visitor Center Theater. The lectures are free of charge; however, donations to defray costs are gladly accepted. For information, contact the Roscoe Village Visitor Center at 740-622-7644 ext.20. APRIL 5TH, 1966 Twenty-one families attended the Coshocton Campers Club meeting at Lake Park with 15 staying over the weekend. At the campout a special program was put on by Richard Kineer of the Wildlife Division about the beaver and the fur and trapping trade. APRIL 4TH, 1976 The Theatre of Fashion is the newest business to hit Main Street. The store is owned by Floyd and Marilyn Corder and serves to compliment their other clothing store, also on Main Street, The Style Center. The new store has been styled after a movie theatre and uses a black and white color scheme with yellow accents. The store will serve as the Style Center’s enlarged junior department and will feature the latest in female fashion in sizes 3-15. Lyn Markley will be manager. APRIL 3RD, 1986 Local store owner Gary Collins spent two hours picking nearly 150 pounds of flotsam up this morning. The Sanitary Meat Market owner, sick of people complaining about the lack of pride in Coshocton, decided to clean up the block his store is on. He worked from 7 to 9 a.m. picking up cigarette butts and other items. All information was obtained from microfilm of the Coshocton Tribune at the Coshocton County Library.

COSHOOCTON - The Johnson-Humrickhouse is pleased to present Teen-Age Talent on April 9 through May 8. This special exhibit features 100 works by 50 artists from the county’s high schools. Overall the exhibit is composed of a variety of media, from watercolors, acrylics and pastels, to photography, printmaking and sculpture. A number of remarkable works have an ocean or fish theme such as Mariah Kittell’s Ascending from Obscurity (koi) painted in watercolor, Lauren Hire’s Octopus: Dictionary Entry using watercolor and ink, and Adriana Seiler’s An Octopus’s Home, a seascape in papier-mâché. Works for Teen-Age Talent were chosen for their outstanding quality by art teachers Myrtle Beall (Coshocton High School), Lacey McKown (River View High School), Carissa Dickerson (Ridgewood High School), Raylene DeLuca (Coshocton Christian School and home school), and Joan Staufer (Coshocton Opportunity School and Alternative School). The artwork will be

judged in four categories: Two-dimensional Fine Art, 3-Dimensional, Design, and Black and White Drawing. All are invited to the artists’ reception on April 8 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Coshocton Christian School has set the theme for the opening: Lots and Lots of Dots, so join in the fun by wearing something with dots. With good reason Teen-Age Talent has been a favorite exhibit for 26 years. Museum hours through April are 1 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Beginning in April the hours are noon to 5 p.m. One Dollar Wednesday admission is $1 for adults and free for students who are Coshocton County residents. Teen-Age Talent is sponsored by Westmoreland Resource Partners (Oxford Resource Partners). The Ohio Arts Council helped fund this program with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans. CONTRIBUTED

The show is being presented by the Letterman’s Association to raise money for the “little league” football and basketball programs. There are 3 bouts on the docket. The first promises a colorful display by the grapplers George Macricostas and Wild Bill Zim. The second match will pit veteran female warrior Dot Dotson against Olga Zapada, a Mexican-American girl new to the ring. The Main event is a tag team match between the colossus Bolo Brazil and Frankie Tulator, a big name in the Ohio circuit, vs exOSU football star Shag Thomas and his partner junior heavyweight champion Joe Scarpello. Frank Baker will be referee.

Skelton said while they can’t stop a cell phone tower from being built, properly drafted legislation can give them some control over where it goes. “Part of our problem with the previous request was that we have no legislation on cell phone towers,” he said. Stenner shared that there actually has already been inquires about putting another cell phone tower in a prominent part of town. “If people weren’t happy with the one hidden partially behind Coshocton High School they definitely aren’t going to be happy with this one,” he said. Skelton wasn’t aware of any cities that already have legislation dealing with cell phone towers, but said council will probably have to look at larger ones in the state. COSHOCTON - Service Director Jerry Stenner announced at the March 28 city council meeting that the transition to Kimble for trash pickup is coming along well. “They’ve started to pass out the carts and should have them all distributed hopefully in two to three days,” he said. “All trash customers also are supposed to receive a letter from Kimble about how to put the trash out and what they take in recycling.” Customers will receive the 95 gallon trash carts to start, but the letter being sent out will include instructions on how to trade them in for smaller ones. “They will adjust for you, but they have to start somewhere,” Stenner said. Kimble was scheduled to start April 1. At the meeting City Law Director Bob Skelton informed council that they might want to start looking at other cities and any regulations they have in regards to cell towers before another request for one is made.

Spring COSHOCTON – Most lawn problems can be easily tackled according to Tammi Rogers at the OSU Extension Coshocton County Office. One of the main issues she sees is people cutting their grass too short. “A lot of people cut their grass way too short because they think that means they don’t have to mow it as often,” Rogers said. “Higher is actually better because it shades out weeds and keeps the soil cooler and moister.” The recommended mowing height is two to three inches. A well maintained mower also makes lawn care easier. “Nothing beats a sharp blade on your mower,” Rogers said. “Having your filters and oil changed also causes less stress on you because your mower will be working well when you need it. The best time to do maintenance is January and February so you can beat the rush if you need something worked on.” She also sees people under or over fertilize their lawns. “You should do it once in a while even if you are someone who doesn’t really care about your lawn,” Rogers said. “The best time to do it is in the fall, but you need to test your soil first.” Moles are another problem that she hears concerns about. “Research shows that mole traps are the most effective way to deal with

HOME, LAWN & GARDEN

them, but they can be tricky to set and it’s hard to find the moles active runs,” Rogers said. Moles like earthworms though and there is a new product that looks like gummy worms that can attract the moles and euthanize them. Another possible frustrating issue with lawns is weeds. “Not every weed is created equal,” Rogers said. “One herbicide might kill dandelions, but not ground ivy.” The key to dealing with the problem is identification. “We have fact sheets on weed control,” Rogers said. “I can help you identify the weed and we can find the chemical to control it.” If you have some bare spots in your lawn that you want to fill with grass now is the time to get your seed. “You can put grass seed out mid March to mid April, but if you miss that time frame try mid August to mid September,” Rogers said. “Fall is really the best time though because the ground is warm and the nights are cooler so germination is better.” Seed to soil contact is important. “You can’t just throw it out there and expect it to grow,” Rogers said. “Rake the spot so

there is plenty of soil for the seed to stick to and then roll it or lightly walk on it to help make sure there is contact.” The next step is to put straw on top of where you seeded and then you have to make sure to keep the area moist. “Don’t mow until its three inches high or so,” Rogers said. “If you have to mow your lawn before then just mow around it. You need to let it grow up.” If you have any questions about your lawn and weeds or bugs you might have found in it, Rogers is more than happy to help. Her office is located at 724 S. Seventh St. and she can be reached at 740-622-2265 or rogers.376@osu.edu. JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

BEACON STAFF COSHOCTON – What’s on your spring cleaning list? If mini blinds are on it Bill Potter from Fisher Decorating said the best way to tackle this cleaning chore is to take them down and dunk them in a tub filled with soapy water. “Then you can hang them up on something like a clothesline and wipe them down,” he said. “This just loosens the dirt and grime though so you still have to SPRING CLEANING Cleaning mini blinds might not be wipe them down.” as hard as you think. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 16 easy for a home’s inhabitants to track dirt and debris inside as well. After vacuuming or sweeping floors, go over them with a mop. Doing so can remove any lingering dust, dirt, debris, and allergens the vacuum or broom failed to pick up. Apply wood cleaner and polish to wood floors to make them look even cleaner. Baseboards: Though baseboards might not seem all that dirty, upon closer inspection homeowners might notice substantial accumulations of dirt and dust. Such dirt and dust may not be removed so easily, so homeowners might need to use hot water and a sponge to remove any debris that is clinging. Curtains: Curtains also may have absorbed substantial amounts of dust, dirt and debris over the winter. This might be more visible near the end of winter when more sunlight begins to shine through. Clean the curtains in adherence to the manufacturer instructions before you open windows for the season so any wind that blows in does not spread debris onto nearby furniture. Once the curtains have been washed, opening windows may help them dry more quickly. Bathrooms: Bathrooms also tend to bear the brunt of winter weather, as mold and grime can accumulate throughout a season in which it’s too cold to open bathroom windows to let fresh air in after bathing. Inspect ceilings, tubs, shower stalls, and floors for any signs of mold growth or grime. Mold growth in a home can lead to respiratory problems and exacerbate existing conditions such as asthma, so it’s best to inspect bathrooms for any signs of mold growth throughout winter. If you have let that slip, prioritize such inspections come spring cleaning time. Furniture: It’s easy to overlook furniture when tackling spring cleaning, but dust and dirt can quickly accumulate on couches and chairs over the course of winter. When possible, vacuum furniture to remove any debris that might have accumulated while windows and doors were kept shut, and shampoo any cushions or seat covers that don’t pass the smell test.

Prep for a lasting paint job COSHOCTON – Prep work can make all the difference in a painting project. Bill Potter from Fisher Decorating said when painting outside you want to make sure you have a clean, dry surface. “Usually a solution of bleach and water will clean mildew off for you,” he said. “There is some talk that bleach still leaves a film and mildew will re-grow, but if you try to paint over mildew it definitely will grow under the paint and cause it to peel.” Bare wood should be spot primed and all loose old paint needs to be scraped. “You want to do twice as much preparing as painting,” Potter said. “That’s how a paint job lasts.” Using a top of the line acrylic house paint also makes a difference. “You need quality paint,” Potter said. “Don’t get the cheapest you can find. There are other variables, but if you get top quality paint you are usually going to have good success.” He feels the same way about inside painting projects and the applicators you choose to apply paint with. “You need a quality applicator,” Potter said. “Don’t buy top of the line paint and then go get a $.99 roller to do the job.” Amy Taylor from Auer Ace Hardware has actually told people she’s not going to let them

BY JOSIE SELLERS

leave the store with a top of the line paint and a cheap applicator. “I try to educate everyone about the types of applicators so they get the best results,” she said. “I do carry some of the low-end ones for people who are rolling roof tar or just don’t care, but those rollers will leave fur on your wall. We spend a lot of time learning and doing research here and try to educate everyone who walks in the door.” Paint types When trying to decide on the amount of paint you need for a project, Potter said a gallon will usually cover about 350 square feet. Steve Saylor from Coshocton Lumber Company said if you know your square footage they can get you real close to the exact amount of paint you need. “You won’t have a whole lot left over,” he said. “What you do have you can keep for touch ups.” Potter suggests priming before you paint, but there are paints that have primer mixed into them. “I’m not a fan of all in one paint and primers,” he said. “Most of the time you have to do two coats anyway so you might as well use a primer first. To me you aren’t saving more time or money if you don’t. The white primer can be tinted to be close to your top coat and the gray

one is good to use before dark colors of paint.” Saylor, on the other hand, likes paint that includes primer. “If you are painting bare drywall it’s always a good idea to seal it with primer because it keeps the paint from soaking in too much, but if the surface has already been painted you don’t really need to prime,” he said. “Paint with primer will work well.” When deciding between flat or semi-gloss paint Potter believes there are two main factors to consider. “Semi-gloss is more washable, but it highlights imperfections,” he said. “Flat is duller, but you can touch it up and blends in better. It also hides imperfections.” Outside you will want a nice satin finish. “It gets a good cleaning from a nice rain,” Potter said. “Flat doesn’t benefit from that as much.” Color choices As far as current popular color choices go, grey has been seen a lot by Potter and Saylor has noticed people going toward darker, richer colors. “They make a room look regal, but it’s really more about personal preferences,” Saylor said. “A lot of paint manufacturers have pamphlets that show colors and corresponding colors that they look nice with. You can look through those

and keep the paint from adhering so you want to make sure to rinse the walls.” All the hard work will pay off in the end. “Whether you are painting a room, a house or a piece of furniture the end result is only as good as your prep work,” Taylor said. JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

and pick palettes that complement each other.” Taylor suggests when picking a color that you think about the appearance of the room. “Think about what you want it to look like and what else is in there,” she said. “Consider the furniture, the floor colors and what colors make you happy. I’ve had ladies come in who want to take 20 color chips home, but that can be overwhelming. Take three or four and put them against your furniture. I also have paint pints that you can slap up on the wall and live with for a couple of days. They can be mixed in any color and that way you can put them on a couple of spots on your walls and see if you like them before investing in a whole gallon.” According to Taylor, color can be a “funny animal.” “It can look like one thing in here, but when you get it home with your lighting and flooring it can look like three different colors at three different times of day,” she said. As a service to her customers, Taylor will go to their homes and help them layout color schemes. “Don’t be afraid of color,” she said. “It can be intimidating, but it’s worth it.” However, no matter what color you choose you want to make sure you do your prep work. “Walls should be cleaned with a cleaning agent and then given two clean water rinses,” Taylor said. “Sometimes we are just moving dirt around and the cleaning agent can leave a residue

Home projects perfect for spring

spring gutters are in need of inspection if not repair. Winter winds, snow and heavy rainfall can compromise the effectiveness of gutters, which can easily accumulate debris and detach from homes during winter storms. In addition, gutters sometimes develop leaks over the winter months. As a result, homeowners should conduct a careful inspection of their gutters come the spring, being sure to look for leaks while clearing the gutters of debris and reattaching gutters that might have become detached from the home on windy winter days and nights. When reattaching loose gutters, make sure the downspouts are draining away from the foundation, as gutters that are not draining properly can cause damage to that foundation and possibly lead to flooding. Take stock of roof shingles: Much like its gutters and downspouts, a home’s roof can suffer significant damage over the course of a typical winter. Shingles may be lost to harsh winter winds and storms, so homeowners should examine

the roof to determine if any shingles were lost (lost shingles might even be lying around the property) or suffered damage that’s considerable enough to require replacement. Summer can be especially brutal on shingles, especially those that suffered significant damage during the winter. If left unchecked or unaddressed, problems with damaged shingles can quickly escalate into larger issues when spring rains and summer sun inevitably arrive, so homeowners should prioritize fixing or replacing damaged shingles as quickly as possible. Check for freeze damage: Frozen temperatures can be hard on humans and homes alike, but unlike humans who can stay inside when temperatures dip below freezing, homes are forced to withstand the elements throughout the winter. External hose faucets are often susceptible to freeze damage. To inspect such faucets, turn the water on and then place a thumb or finger over the opening of the faucet. If your thumb or finger can completely stop the flow of water, the pipe where the water is coming from is likely damaged and will need to be replaced. Examine the lawn for low spots: Once a lawn has thawed out, homeowners can patrol their properties looking for low spots in the yard or even low spots within spitting distance of the home’s foundation. Such spots increase the likelihood of flooding. Flooding near a home’s SEE MORE “PROJECTS” ON PAGE 21

The rejuvenating spirit of spring makes this beloved season an ideal time for homeowners to take stock of their homes and properties and address any issues that arose during the winter. While some homes make it through winter unscathed, the harsh weather of the year’s coldest season can add several tasks to homeowners’ springtime to-do lists. While some projects are best left to the professionals, others can be tackled even by those homeowners with little or no DIY experience. The following are a handful of projects tailormade for spring. When low spots are detected, fill them in with compacted soil. Compacted soil can prevent spring rains from flooding a yard or damaging a home’s foundation.

Taking Care of You and Your Family... Generation After Generation

0015_040616

The following are a handful of ways to keep insects out this spring and summer. Consider potential food supplies and cut those supplies off: Give dining areas a thorough cleaning after meals, vacuuming or sweeping the floors beneath dining tables each night before going to bed. (Parents of young children may want to sweep floors after each meal.) Clean pet bowls each night to be sure there are no food scraps left that may entice insects, and make sure pet food containers are tightly sealed after each serving. Empty food traps after using the sink and run the garbage disposal to remove any food that might be lingering. Address potential shelters: Cracks around windows and doors and in the foundation provide both entry points and potential shelters for insects. Seal such cracks with caulk, testing the areas by feeling for any incoming air. If you still feel air coming in, there is still some sealing to do. Cracks in cabinets or counters also may provide shelter to insects, so address these areas as well. Reconsider exterior lighting: Insects tend to congregate around lights at nighttime, so avoid placing lights right outside entryways. Keep exterior lights as far away from entryways as possible. If you need lights right outside your doors, install motion-sensing lights that only turn on when you come within a few feet of the door. React quickly upon seeing insects: The slower your response, the more likely one or two intruders is likely to turn into a large infestation. Immediately clean any areas where you see insects, and take more substantial measures if your initial efforts were not enough to prevent more insects from coming in. Any parcel as to which a foreclosure and forfeiture is taken by default shall be sold for the satisfaction of the taxes, assessments, charges, penalties, and interest, and the costs incurred in the foreclosure and forfeiture proceeding, which are due and unpaid. At any time prior to the filing of an entry of confirmation of sale, any owner or lienholder of, or other person with an interest in, a parcel listed in the complaint may redeem the parcel by tendering to the treasurer the amount of the taxes, assessments, charges, penalties, and interest due and unpaid on the parcel, together with all costs incurred in the proceeding instituted against the parcel under section 5721.14 of the Revised Code. VOLUNTEERS Coshocton Kiwanis Club members were very thankful for the help of volunteers from the Coshocton High School Key Club and Coshocton Opportunity School on April 1 when they hosted a free produce market at the fairgrounds. A constant flow of attendees wound their way through the giveaway and received help carrying goods back out to their vehicles. “It feels good that we were able to come and help people out,” said Kelsie Roberts, a CHS senior and member of the Key Club. She is pictured at right with Brandon Filimon, who also is a senior at CHS. The Mid-Ohio Food Bank helped with the free produce market, which the Kiwanis Club hopes to hold more of this year. COSHOCTON - Dana Walsh and her coworker Kaycee Newell were a little bit nervous about going up on the roof at Hopewell Industries, but they didn’t let that stop them from helping a good cause. Fools on the Roof, held April 1, was a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, an event that Walsh is very passionate about. “My daughter, Kendra Walsh, had cancer twice as a toddler, but is doing great now,” she said. “She is a senior at River View and getting ready to graduate in May. Without the community’s support, family support, faith and friends I don’t know if we would have gotten through that.” Both Dana and Newell are employees of The Home Loan Savings Bank. “I used to have team for Kendra, but when I started working for Home Loan I joined their team,” Dana said. “I’ve been involved with Relay for 18 years now. My first team was when Kendra was diagnosed at the age of 10 months. We really appreciate Home Loan allowing us the time away to do this and their support of Relay for Life.” Dana and Newell were lifted up onto the roof by a

bucket truck from A-1 Tree Experts. “We’ve been involved with this from the beginning,” said Scot Householder, owner of A-1. “We donate our time because my grandpa died of cancer when I was 9. I’ve hated cancer ever since then.” His late brother Mike Householder was the original organizer of Fools on the Roof. “It’s generated nine to 10 thousand dollars for six years now,” Scot said. This year’s event was organized by Kyle Libby State Farm and Pablo Neal and music was provided by Dave Lear and Mary Countryman’s deejay service. “I donate my time for this every year,” Lear said. “I use it as a dress rehearsal for Relay for Life since I run the sound system there.” Participants were treated to breakfast from Tim Hortons and lunch from Papa John’s and each of them were asked to try and raise at least $500 before getting off the roof. Signature holds ribbon cutting for remodeling

TIMOTHY L. ROGERS, SHERIFF COSHOCTON COUNTY, OHIO

REMODELING Signature HealthCare is dedicated to caring for people and its recent renovations help emphasize that. On March 31 the health care facility on Whitewoman Street held a ribbon cutting and open house to reintroduce itself to the public. Recent remodeling was designed to make people feel more at home and create a sense of nostalgia with the new general store and gas station area. Food also is now served in a restaurant like setting and the term resident has been replaced with elders. “We are about quality of life and building our elders quality of life,” said Chris Lofton, CEO. “We are person centered and will build ourselves around them. That’s the way it should be done and the way we will do it.” Signature also is proud to have a full time chaplain, Mark Brodbeck, who Frances Deeds really likes. “I’ve been here nine months and Pastor Mark makes my day,” she said. “He listens to us real well.” For more photos, visit www.coshoctonbeacontoday.com. Killiany was announced the winner and was presented with a $250 cash award from the Montgomery Foundation by Executive Director Linda Scott. “I’m really excited,” Killiany said. “I’m kind of surprised; they all did a really good job. The piece was by Chopin and half of it is really kind of fast and the middle part is kind of slow and more dreamish.” BEACON PHOTO BY MARK FORTUNE

NEW PHILADELPHIA - Dr. Bradley A. Bielski, dean and chief administrative officer of Kent State Tuscarawas, believes student clubs, organizations and athletics enhance the collegiate experience. With that goal, he is leading an initiative to dramatically expand the athletic programs offered by the campus, as well as reinstituting choir and band as credit courses. “Researching the interest levels for these programs has been an important part of the process,” said Bielski. “We have developed and distributed student and community interest surveys for sports and music. We also have met with community band and choir directors, coaches and athletic directors for their advice and to gauge their interest. Everyone has been supportive of our expansion plans, confirming their need and value to our students and prospective students. These programs will increase opportunities for our students and add vibrancy to the campus.” Band and choir courses were provided to students in the early years of the campus, which opened in 1968. Both were dropped as interest declined. Seven sports programs began in 1972 and ran for 16 years. In 1999, the campus brought back men’s and women’s basketball, followed by golf in 2004. Volleyball began in 2008 but waivered due to lack of available coaches. Kent State Tuscarawas currently offers men’s and women’s basketball and men’s golf but are planning to add women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer and cross country, as well as baseball, softball and wrestling in the near future. The existing teams are currently competing in the Ohio Regional Campus Conference (ORCC). Bielski has applied for campus membership in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA). By joining the USCAA, Kent State Tuscarawas athletics will have the opportunity to play in national championships and vie for academic all-American awards, among many other benefits. “The expansion of athletic offerings along with membership in the USCAA will have an immediate impact on the Golden Eagles golf team, which becomes an automatic qualifier for the national championship that will be played in October at Penn State University,” said Rob Brindley, coordinator of academic and student accessibility services and coach of the golf team. “The USCAA, offers the opportunity to play for seven national titles and Kent State Tuscarawas will offer six of the championship sports where coaches polls and power rankings determine tournament fields.” For more information about the band and choir programs, contact Pam Patacca at 330308-7473 or ppatacca@kent.edu. Contact Rob Brindley regarding the sports programs, 330308-7433 or rbrindle@kent.edu.
