Jack Lipps surpasses 1,000 mark in military funerals attended meetings when Dick (Jones) was the commander and he kept asking for people to go to military funerals so I started going,” Lipps said. Lipps served in the Marine Corps from Sept. 6, 1951 through Sept. 5, 1954 and is a Purple Heart recipient. He retired from the Coshocton General Electric plant in 1992. He said he continues to attend military funerals as a sense of pride. “I believe our fallen veterans deserve a proper send-off,” he said. “It’s important for people to know that somebody cares about them.”

As of Feb. 29, Lipps’ total stands at 1,004. Two other Honor Guard members have also eclipsed the 1,000 mark. World War II veteran George Leach is nearing the 1,400 mark and James C. Stone has attended over 1,100. Lipps will be among Honor Guard members who will be recognized at their annual recognition dinner on April 14 at the Coshocton Elks. New West Lafayette Police Chief sworn in

BY JOSIE SELLERS WEST LAFAYETTE – West Lafayette Mayor Stephen Bordenkircher is looking forward to a long future of working with new Police Chief Stephen Klopfenstein. Klopfenstein was sworn in to his new position by Bordenkircher on March 21 in council chambers in front of a crowd that included village council members, village firefighters and his family. “I want to thank each and every one of you for coming,” Klopfenstein said. “I’m excited to start and hope to see and work with each of you very soon.” He will officially start his duties on April 16. “I want to ride with my officers and get orientated because they’ve been here and understand what’s going on in the community,” Klopfenstein said. “Then I want to meet with community members, churches and businesses. I want to find out what people expect from us, if there is something they need done and just keep interacting with them.” He comes to West Lafayette from the Brunswick Hills Police Department where he held the rank of sergeant. “I enjoy working with people and interacting with communities and being in schools,” Klopfenstein said. “I want to get as involved as I can here so I can help the residents and let them know that they can talk to us.” Bordenkircher said Klopfenstein was one of five people who applied for the position, which became open after former chief Terry Mardis retired. “There were a number of things that drew us to him,” Bordenkircher said. “He came very well credentialed and we liked his personality and that is a very important part of this job. When you work in the community you have to be approachable.” Klopfenstein will be in charge of three full time and three part time officers. JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

COSHOCTON - NewPointe Community Church is pleased to announce Chad Olinger as its new campus pastor. He is a native of Coshocton County and graduated from Ridgewood High School in 2000 where he played basketball and ran cross country. Olinger continued his education at Otterbein College, graduating in 2004 and received a Master’s in Educational Leadership from the University of Dayton in 2010. “Over the course of the last four to five months, I asked God to use me,” Olinger said. “He revealed that the best place, in this season of my life, is back home. I am excited to return back to where I grew up to help lead the people of Coshocton County to realize and reach their full potential in Jesus Christ. We have amazing leaders here at the Coshocton Campus who want to make a huge impact in the county. And together, with Gods help, I believe the best is yet to come for this campus and this county.” Chad, and his wife, the former Lindsey Peddicord, have three children. NewPointe Community Church currently meets at Coshocton Elementary School on Sundays at 10 a.m. The office is located at 303 S. Fourth St. in Coshocton. For information, visit newpointe.org.

Memories

APRIL 1ST, 1956 Coshocton engineer Ralph W. Kurtz received a patent for an invention he developed for Clow. His rotary spray-gun, used to coat the inside of tubes, received the patent number 2,738,23. The device operates by spraying the material from a thin nozzle. A second rotating nozzle sprays air into the first stream to change its direction. MARCH 30TH, 1966 At their meeting on Tuesday the Rotary Club welcomed Dr. Seppo Mustonen as a guest speaker. Dr. Mustonen, whom came to Coshocton on behalf of the Finnish government to study our water treatment facility, was there to share his impressions of the U.S. During the meeting he was presented a banner by club president Owen Manning. This banner is to be presented to the Rotary Club of Rovaniemi in Finland, whom the Coshocton club has had a relationship with for the past 30 years. Dr. Mustonen lives with his family on Orchard Street, and they will soon be returning to Finland. MARCH 27TH, 1976 The River View High School Symphonic Band scored a major victory at the District X Band and Chorus Competition in Newark. Last Saturday saw them receive a 1 rating, the highest possible score, indicating “an outstanding performance with very few technical errors and exemplifying truly musical expression.” The competition was sponsored by the Ohio Music Educators Association and involved 14 other bands. MARCH 31ST, 1986 Sheldon and Tammy Mencer will be leaving Coshocton next week to join the travelling ministry of Nancy Harmon, but before they leave the Gospel singing couple will be performing a farewell concert. Nancy Harmon Ministries is based in Portland, Oregon. The Gospel singing couple will join with a group called the Victory Voices, and Tammy will sing on Harmon’s weekly televised show “The Love Special” with a group called “The Love Special Singers.”

Confederate Flag on court square topic of discussion at commissioners COSHOCTON – Since at least 1985 a Confederate Flag has flown on the court square in honor of a southern soldier from the Civil War who died here and is buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery. On March 28 the Coshocton County Commissioners were scheduled to meet with James Murphy who would like that flag removed. Murphy, who has local ties, but resides in Zanesville, did not show up at his scheduled time on the commissioners’ agenda, but they went ahead and discussed the flag with Veterans Service Officer Jim Barstow. The flag in question is one of 16 in holders that represent different war periods and surround the County War Memorial on the court square. It is there to represent Civil War Veteran William H. Webb. “He was a prisoner of war who was being held in the Sandusky area at a POW camp,” Barstow said. “He was part of a prisoner exchange and was to be taken back south to his home in Tennessee when he became ill around Coshocton. He was taken off the train and someone local took him in. After he died they tried to contact his family in Tennessee, but they had no luck so he was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery.” The Confederate Flag is replaced along with the American Flags on the court square every year before Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Webb’s gravestone also has a Confederate Flag flying beside it. “We aren’t trying to be insensitive to what other people believe that flag stands for,” Barstow said. “My thinking is that we are honoring a fallen veteran and veterans who fought in the Civil War on both sides ultimately fell under the Proud to serve the people of Coshocton and surrounding communities since 1896!

same army.” He, however, has been researching the topic and trying to figure out if there is another way to still honor Webb. “I praised the gentleman that came in here for being so passionate about the topic and said I would look into it,” Barstow said. “We aren’t dismissing it. We are going to review it and if we are wrong we will find a way to make it right. He did tell me there is a Confederate States Flag that he would be willing to buy for us to use. The switch was made to the Confederate Flag to help the troops differentiate between the two symbols on the battlefield. It wasn’t until many years later that it became a symbol of racism and started being used by hate groups. Commissioners Gary Fischer and Curtis Lee both brought the issue up with veterans in the community to see what their opinions on the topic were. The general consensus seemed to be that they understood why it was there and that it was being used in the right context. “Jim told us that there are around 3,000 veterans in Coshocton County and many of them understand that it’s there to honor a brother veteran,” Lee said. However, some also could see how society has changed and there might be people who objected to it being there. “It’s part of our history,” Barstow said. “There are 35 American Flags flying on the court square and only one Confederate Flag. Cameron’s father Michael Hawthorne also was excited for him. “It was nice to see him take part in something like this,” Michael said. The giving didn’t stop with the students on this special evening. Donations were collected to help cover the cost of the evening’s meal and anything left over was going to go toward helping a junior high student and or their family in their time of need in the future. It turned out that all the money was able to go to help someone in need as the Coshocton Foundation stepped up to cover the expenses. Woodson gave the students another $5 each to spend any way they wished and he will be given a binder of letters explaining what each student did with their money and how it made them feel. “I didn’t do this for the recognition,” he said. “If anyone asks you where the money came from tell them God because really he’s the one that gave it to us.” Olinger hopes this project is one that impacts the students for the rest of their lives. “I have no doubt that you will all grow up to be successful,” he said. “When you are able to financially do it I hope you remember how good this felt and help someone again. You also can give someone your time because that is one of the most valuable gifts. Let’s keep this going.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

COSHOCTON - Spring is Here! Is the topic for April’s preschool programs at the JohnsonHumrickhouse Museum. How do we know when spring really is here? Is it the rain, the blooming flowers, the planting of gardens, the birds building their nests and animal babies being born? It’s all of these, of course. Each week we’ll learn about these omens of spring using artifacts, music, games and books. We’ll be planting our own garden behind the museum with the hope that in July we can pick some of the veggies. Linda’s parents convinced her to give her child up for adoption and at some point in her pregnancy sent her to the Florence Crittenton Home in Columbus. Within a week of being born she was adopted by a couple from Springfield. “We made several trips to Columbus for interviews and Beth’s big brother Bill was involved in everything,” said Susan Brougher, Beth’s mother. “It was quite the procedure.” Linda held Beth despite the social worker urging her not to and has thought of her every day since giving her up for adoption. “I ended up marrying her father and we decided we were going to let her find us if she wanted to,” Linda said. “We didn’t want to disturb her life.” Beth’s first contact with Linda and Jack was through a letter she sent to them by FedEx. “I almost fainted when I got it,” Linda said. Linda said she found Beth’s mother to be nice and fun to talk to and she greatly appreciated the great job she did raising her first born. “Beth is a delightful woman and was brought up very well,” Linda said. Susan said she is completely comfortable with Beth researching her biological family. “She’s my daughter and always will be my daughter,” Susan said. “It’s been a pleasure to raise her just as it was my other three children.” It’s been nice for Beth though to be able to see some of the similarities between herself and her biological family and learn about her heritage. “She takes a lot after my husband,” Linda said. Beth is happy to finally be able to look in the mirror and see people she knows. “It’s been an overwhelming experience, but I’ve met some wonderful people,” she said. “It’s been quite a year and I can’t say I if I had this

He also volunteers with the Fatherhood Initiative, helping with the pancake breakfast and All-Pro Dad event. Nate joined Leadership Coshocton County as a result of listening to 2015 graduate Kyle Myers talk about the program. He states, there is “a lot of knowledge among the leaders in our community.” Nate also appreciates “working with the youth leadership kids and hearing about goals they have set for themselves.” As employee of the Coshocton County Courts, Nate views the community through the “glasses of the court.” He hears people speak negatively about the community, yet there are “so many people working to improve the community; hard working people who never receive recognition; willing to roll up their sleeves and get dirty.”

When asked about his perspective on the future of Coshocton, Nate was uncertain, but optimistic, due to the potential impact a new federal administration could have on funds for the local agencies and programming. Nate would “absolutely” recommend Leadership Coshocton to others. He stressed getting to know things about the community you don’t know about; learning the history “solidifies your roots and makes you proud to be from Coshocton.” He stated, “It’s been good to be in a leadership group with a class as diverse as ours. I enjoy it!”

NEW CONCORD – Registration for the Summer High School Music Theatre CAMP at Muskingum University is now open. This residential training program, designed for high school students who want to explore and strengthen their singing, dancing, and acting skills, is set for June 19–25. Each summer, young people currently in grades nine through 12 gather from many high schools to experience this unique and powerful musical adventure. Some 35 young people are chosen by application and audition to engage in an immersive week of dance classes, acting sessions, private voice lessons, auditions practice, scene study, master classes, and lots of fun with a highly professional staff of directors, choreographers, voice teachers, and coaches. Directed by Carol Wilcox Jones, the camp has been praised by students, parents, teachers, and community leaders for its positive and powerful impact on the lives of those who participate. Scholarships may be available for regional students. “The ratio of students to staff is approximately three to one, so students receive individual attention as well as work together in highly collaborative ways. Evening recreation includes square dancing, swimming, a musical movie night, and making friends with others who share a love for musical theatre performance. The week culminates in a public performance in the Thompson Theatre in Philip and Betsey Caldwell Hall on campus,” said Jones. For information and a registration form, go on line at www.muskingum.edu/dept/music/camp. html. You may reach Director Carol Wilcox Jones at cjones@muskingum.edu or call 740-826-6210 with questions. Deadline for registration is April, 16. To register, fill out and sign registration form and mail this along with deposit to: Music Theatre CAMP, Muskingum University, 163 Stormont St., New Concord, OH 43762

BY JOSIE SELLERS “The drug problem in our community is overwhelming, but I deal with people when they are sober and most of them are really decent people,” Mast said. “Their life is just a train wreck because of their drug problem. It’s rare that someone lets you know you helped them, but when it happens it makes you feel good. You hope you can get through to somebody.” Kalish said someone from the community informed Husted of Mast’s award and they presented him with the commendation to show their gratitude for his work and devotion to the residents and visitors of Coshocton County. “I truly love my job,” Mast said. CONTRIBUTED Hospital to diagnose and treat patients with coronary, peripheral vascular, and acute and chronic venous disease. In addition, his team will treat patients with heart failure and cardiac rhythm disorders. The addition of Dr. Habib to the hospital’s medical staff follows a focused initiative on the part of the hospital to advance local cardiovascular services. The process has included the addition of cardiac nurse practitioner Rajene Fox to provide daily support for heart stress testing and other diagnostic procedures. The hospital has also completed a total re-design of cardiac rehabilitation services to offer a comprehensive program to help patients resume normal activities following a heart attack, coronary bypass surgery or other heart event. “The recruitment of a fulltime cardiologist has been a top priority for us and we are very pleased to welcome a cardiologist of Dr. Habib’s caliber to our medical staff,” stated Stephanie Conn, RN, MSN, Chief Nursing Officer. “Historically, patients with a heart event have been transported from our community for diagnosis and treatment simply because we did not have a fulltime cardiologist to diagnose and manage the patient’s care. Dr. Habib has designed and grown the cardiovascular program at a community hospital in Missouri and is enthusiastic about designing a similar program here. Strengthening the health of hearts in our communities only contributes to the overall good health of the people in this region and we are very pleased to bring essential heart services to our hospital.” Dr. Habib will begin seeing patients on Monday, April 4, at his office at 311 S. 15th St., Suite 101, in Coshocton. Appointments can be scheduled now by calling the office at 740-6234481.
