COSHOCTON – When it comes to wedding planning, we often think of something new, old, borrowed and blue, but what about something framed? Shara Prindle from The Frame Shop has framed just about every piece of wedding memorabilia that you can image, with the largest one being a full wedding dress and veil. “We put it in a handmade frame that was 10 inches deep and four feet by six feet,” she said. “The bride just came in, handed me the box the dress was in and asked if I could frame it. I’ve done big stuff before but this was a real challenge.” It took Prindle four months to complete the project, but the dress is now beautifully displayed in her customer’s home. A more common request she receives is to make shadowboxes displaying invitations, napkins, favors, confetti, decorations and other small pieces of memorabilia from the wedding and or reception. “People have brought in things all the way from the bridal shower to the dinner that we try to fit in and then I’ve done others that are just the invitation,” Prindle said. She also can make the shadow boxes match your wedding colors and has a variety of frame styles to choose from to give you everything from a rustic, to Victorian to barn wood look and more. “Another thing we do a lot of is reception signature mats,” Prindle said. “They are a lot of fun. We frame the photo and do the mat and then the couple brings it back in after the wedding for us to finish.”

Bouquets and honeymoon memorabilia also have been brought in for her to frame. “Everything I use on these projects is acid free so everything will be preserved,” Prindle said. “I don’t use any adhesives that could cause damage.” All of these projects could take anywhere from a few weeks to several months depending on the size of the project and the time involved in them. “We can put as much or as little in shadowboxes as you want, but it’s helpful if you pick out what is most important to you,” Prindle said.

Following your heart is. “Every little girl dreams of being a bride,” said Teri Misener, buyer at Universe Bridal and Prom. “Whether it’s a simplistic or eloquent wedding being happy in the end is all that matters. It’s not about how much money you spend or impressing people.” However, no matter what your vision for your wedding is, Universe Bridal and Prom can help you find the attire to make it come together. Misener said right now traditional white is popular with wedding gowns, but so is soft ivory. for their bridesmaids. “For a while there was a trend of having different dresses in the same color and some still do that, but the idea of having all the bridesmaids in the same dress is still very alive and well,” Misener said. Bridesmaids also are getting a little dressier. “We are seeing lace, sparkles, sequins and metallic colors like silver and gold,” Misener said. “They have a lot of choices out there. I’m really happy with what we are seeing because the dresses are figure flattering. They aren’t frumpy and some of them have 50-60 different color choices. Not all the dresses are like that, but there is quite a color palette.” Groomsmen also have more choices than they used to. “They are going a little more casual,” Misener said. “You are seeing less of the traditional tuxes

Estimates suggest the average wedding gown costs $2,000. Brides who indulge by purchasing a designer dress can pay upward of $5,000 for their gowns. But even the most expensive dress will only be worn once by the blushing bride. Fortunately, there are a variety of ways brides can reuse or recycle their wedding gowns. HEIRLOOM: One of the easiest ways to get more from your gown is to pass it down to another bride after your wedding day. Brides frequently save and preserve their gowns with the intent of passing it down as an heirloom to a daughter or another family member. Maintain the beauty of the gown by hiring a professional dry cleaner or wedding gown preservation service to treat and package the gown before storing it for some lucky lady’s future use. RELIGIOUS OUTFIT: If you feel the style of the gown won’t keep up with the times, the fabric of the gown can be repurposed into a baptismal outfit or a communion dress or suit. Christian children are welcomed to the faith in white clothing, which is a symbol of purity and cleansing of sin. Seamstresses can fashion beautiful dresses or suits from original wedding gowns.

PLAY CLOTHES: Many little girls and boys like to play dress-up. And rather than have a gown sitting in the closet, use it to make play clothes for little ones. The gown can be turned into a dress for a fairy princess or an ice queen. ORNAMENTS OR FAVORS: Lace from gowns can be turned into doilies, accents on other clothing, undergarments or decorative pieces for the home. Misener also has noticed the wedding industry making adjustments for people getting married later in life, possibly having more than one wedding in their lifetime and even those who want a nice dress to renew their vows in. “You want to feel like a bride and designers are making gowns that flatter all sizes, shapes and ages,” she said. “You can find something that makes you feel confident and reflects your tastes and personality. Wedding showers continue to break from tradition

COUPLES’ SHOWERS: Modern couples who like to be all-inclusive are now planning bridal showers that cater to mixed audiences. Dubbed a “couple shower,” these parties include female and male friends and relatives. Gifts are still the main focus of the event, but they’re varied and include guyfriendly items within the mix of household goods. POWER SHOWERS: Many are familiar with the terms “man cave” and “bromance,” but few may know that there are now wedding showers geared entirely around the groom. Known as “power showers,” these events focus on the groom-to-be, who is showered with a bevy of gadgets and power tools that are certain to stock his future garage. The parties are decidedly more testosterone-friendly and can include golf outings, poker nights or action movie flicks as possible themes.

Rain showers on a wedding day may bring good luck, but they are seldom coveted. However, a different type of shower altogether is often highly anticipated and can help couples feel like they’re one in a million. Wedding showers are giftgiving parties held for couples about to get married. The custom began in the 19th century and continues

to present day, primarily in North America and Australia. Guests traditionally “shower” the bride-tobe with all the necessities (and some fun extras) that she will need after she ties the knot. These gifts will help the soon-to-be-married couple establish a home together. Bridal showers are steeped in tradition, but today’s bridal showers continue to veer off the beaten path. Nowadays, bridal showers feature fun and games much like a party having nothing to do with a wedding. TheKnot.com, a website that aims to help couples plan their weddings and all the events leading up to the big day, identifies these key trends in modern bridal showers.

DESTINATION/ACTIVITY SHOWERS: Rather than having guests hang around a restaurant watching gift after gift get unwrapped, some bridal parties opt to throw an activity shower. These showers are focused around a particular activity. For example, ladies may be treated to a day at the spa. Other ideas include horseback riding at a stable or a day at the ballpark. Because hosting an activity shower for dozens of people may get expensive, these types of showers may be reserved for only your closest friends and family members. BRIDE-INVOLVED SHOWERS: The idea of walking into a room and being surprised by friends and family members is appealing to some brides-to-be but not everyone. Some brides prefer not to be surprised by a shower and actually would like to have a role in the planning of the party. However, this is delicate ground on which to tread, considering there may be differences over where the party is held and even the overall experience of the party. These type of showers should be discussed before any plans are made, and tasks should be delegated in accordance with those plans. It is customary for a bridal shower to take place before a wedding. But new trends have emerged that are shaking up the way showers are planned and held.

Simple can go a long way with reception centerpieces

“Some you don’t have to wait until the Friday before a wedding to do,” he said. “If you have a cool place to store them you could do them on Monday or Tuesday.” This is especially true if you use greenery. “There are a lot of different greeneries out there with different textures that can make really cool centerpieces,” Kiefer said. Centerpieces also can be spiced up with different herbs, but Kiefer said they are easier to use if you know someone who raises them. “Make a contact at a farmers market because they can be difficult to buy in bulk,” he said. The use of baby’s breath is making a comeback in arrangements and Kiefer said Garden Roses are a popular choice. “They (Garden Roses) are so big you can put three in a centerpiece and have something nice that is inexpensive,” he said. Amanda Stickdorn, who manages Linnet’s Flowers on the Square Newark store, said she sees a lot of requests for peonies and hydrangeas. “Peonies are pretty and fragrant and hydrangeas are timeless and romantic,” said Stickdorn, who is the daughter of Linnet Lowe, owner of the Coshocton and Newark store. COSHOCTON - Centerpieces at your wedding reception don’t have to be elaborate works of art. Simple can be outstanding. “We had one couple where the bride had collected different colored bottles and we gathered them in the center of the table and put a single flower in each,” said Ed Kiefer from Kiefer’s Florist. “Last season we also had a couple from West Virginia that got married at Raven’s Glenn and the bride had vintage milk glass. She was working in blush pinks and white so we put three containers on each table and used all different types of flowers. Did you know? Historically, June has been the most popular month for getting married. But some numbers now indicate that July and even October have begun to edge out June as the most popular months to tie the knot. The June wedding tradition may be traced back to the ancient Romans. Romans honored Juno, the goddess of marriage and childbirth, and the month of June was named after her, so it is fitting that weddings take place in her namesake month. As centuries passed, June remained a popular month to get married. June was a prime time for people to come out after a long winter and take communal baths in the fifteenth century. In addition, June weddings meant children conceived after betrothal would be born close to or during the following spring. This helped assure youngsters’ survival during the rough and often lean months of winter. Spring births would not conflict with workers’ demanding schedules during the autumn harvest, either. Even when weddings began shifting from pragmatic business transactions to romantic affairs, June remained popular.

MARY MASON: Leah Vigil, now 36 years of age, enjoyed her older sister’s wedding to the fullest. When the limo service pulled up for the bride and groom, she jumped in and sat between the bride and groom and thought being in the middle was her place. At the reception she enjoyed the mints and barbecue pork and dancing until sick. Brent and Sheri Fortune are happily celebrating their 24th anniversary in October. And little sister is still as entertaining.

That anxiety is perfectly normal, especially for those who have never before been asked to serve as maid of honor or best man. Those tasked with toasting the newly anointed husband and wife can consider the following tips to make the task a little easier.

KEEP IT BRIEF. While there might be many things you want to say, try to express yourself as concisely as possible. Convey your relationship with the bride and/or groom, but avoid lengthy histories that might come off as rambling. While personal anecdotes that shed some humorous light on your relationship are great additions to wedding toasts, avoid going into too much detail when telling such stories, focusing instead on the parts of the stories that illustrate your feelings and generate a few laughs. COSHOCTON – Everyone wants to look beautiful on their wedding day, but unfortunately there is no quick way to lose weight. If you are patient though, Coshocton Hospital Registered Dietitian Jenny Provo, MS, RD, LD, says small gradual changes will add up to bigger ones. If weight loss is your goal one of the most important steps you can take is to make sure you eat a healthy breakfast that includes a protein such as eggs or yogurt. Doing this will get your metabolism going and get your day started out right. Another simple change that can have a big impact is building healthy snacks into the day and trying to eat something every three to four hours. “That doesn’t mean grabbing potato chips or a piece of cake,” Provo said. “Try a granola bar, nuts, seeds, Greek yogurt. You want something that will keep you full and satisfied versus empty calories.” She suggests pairing a yogurt with some fruit or a whole grain with peanut butter. Eliminating soda and other sugar filled drinks from your diet is another step in the right direction when it comes to working on a healthier lifestyle. Provo encourages people to drink water, unsweetened ice tea, one percent or skim milk or plain coffee. “Coffee itself is ok,” Provo said. “It’s when you start adding the creams and mocha lattes that make it not good for you.” Another key to weight loss is eating a balanced diet. “Make sure your plate includes your fruits and veggies, whole grains and proteins,” Provo said. “Low fat, low-carb diets are just quick fixes. You don’t need to completely eliminate something from your diet unless it’s medically necessary. I don’t focus too much on calories either because

then it becomes about number crunching. I believe it’s more important to have a balanced meal, add color to your plate and focus on what you can have versus what you can’t. You can still have things like cake. You just can’t do it every single day. It needs to be a treat.” All of these tips, however, need to go along with exercising. You don’t have to join a gym though to accomplish this. You can take the stairs instead of the elevator, park further away from stores or if you sit a lot, do a couple reps of getting up and down from your chair. “It doesn’t have to be 30 minutes to an hour all at once either,” Provo said. “You can do three 10 minute stints.” She also warns people to be leery of quick fixes like diet pills. “Be cautious of things that sound too good to be true because most often they are,” Provo said. She and Coshocton Hospital’s Marketing Director Mary Ellen Given also encourage people to be realistic when it comes to trying to lose weight in a short amount of time for a wedding. “Be who you are and plan for a healthier future,” Given said. No matter what your weight loss goal is leading up to your wedding though, you want to make sure you and your bridesmaids eat that day. “Have food available such as fruit, veggies and dip, mini sandwiches or yogurt and granola,” Provo said. “Plan ahead and have choices. COSHOCTON – When it comes to your wedding cake your choices now go way beyond chocolate and vanilla. “There are a lot of creative choices and more and more people are branching out, but you can still have the traditional chocolate and vanilla,” said Hannah Ianniello from Hannah Marie’s Specialty Bakery & Coffee Shop. She’s seen people turn her Oreo overdose cupcake into different layers for a wedding cake and remembers another couple working raspberry into their cake and then having a peanut butter sheet cake. Cupcakes also are still a popular choice. “People will get a small cake and then do cupcakes on the side,” Ianniello said. When it comes to design, she said a simple and basic trend called naked cakes is popular. “They will just have a crumb coating or a dusting of powdered sugar or some fruit,” Ianniello said. “Those who want more detailed cakes are going for geometric shapes and textures for their designs.” When you come in for a tasting she will have you pick up to four flavors and fillings for free and additional ones can be selected for a fee. “I’m not basic,” Ianniello said. “I like different and I’ll help people pair their flavors and fillings.” Tastings/consultations should be done at least three months in advance of the wedding, but Ianniello said some brides will come in a year in advance. “If you do that you can make smaller payments,” she said. Ianniello tells people that typically 70 percent of their guests will eat cake so you meet with your baker before you get your RSVP in. “I can get you a quote and then you can call when you get your RSVP back and we can adjust and get everything finalized,” Ianniello said. She also is seeing couples go for a shabby chic look with their centerpieces and incorporating things like old mercury glass and books into them. “People will stack old books and then put their flowers on top of them,” Stickdorn said. Like most choices for your wedding, the height of your centerpieces is a personal one. “Personally I like to look out on a reception room and see a skyline with some short and some tall centerpieces,” Kiefer said. “I think that makes it more interesting.” Stickdorn agrees with the idea and said she has seen people do half their tables in big tall over the top centerpieces and the other half in low short ones. Candles also add a nice touch to centerpieces at receptions. “I’m a big promoter of votive candles on tables when and if you are allowed to use them at your venue,” Kiefer said. Whether you want a florist to make your centerpieces for you or order supplies for you to do it, Kiefer suggests contacting them as soon as possible. “Some flowers are seasonal so we need to find out if what you want will be available when you are getting married,” he said. “Some flowers are expensive in season and when they are out of season their price is phenomenal.” Stickdorn said a lot of people start planning their weddings at the first of the year because that is when most bridal shows are held and consultations get set up around January and February. However, meeting with a florist six months ahead of time is typically ok. “I tell people when they come in to have some ideas together,” Stickdorn said. “Have pictures on your phone or start pinning to Pinterest. If you do that we can have you log on to your account when you get here

• Pre-plan: Know what times are specifically set aside for photos and try not to change this. The photographer will plan accordingly to ensure all shots can be taken in the given time. • Make lists: Photographers might know how to “get the shot” but they don’t always know who to shoot. Although photographers try to completely capture a wedding, they don’t know that your sister flew 16 hours to be there and you’d really like some personal photos with her alone. • Predict possible issues: Blended families are common now and it’s good to know who’s who. Do the biological parents not get along? Are they amicable enough to have all parents, step and biological, together for shots? This is good to know to prevent possible awkwardness for everyone. • Lay out exactly what you want: Don’t assume that photographers will automatically know what you’re looking for in terms of shots, groups, the overall “feel” of your photos or anything but getting the “standard” photos. Tell him/her what you’re hoping for in your wedding photography and that will make it easier on the photographer and likely provide a product that the bride and groom will be happy with. • Communication: When planning a wedding, oftentimes the bride or groom will hire a photographer and that’s the end until the wedding. The assumption is that the photographer will know exactly how to perform everything he/she will need to and end with a product that the bride/groom will love, but without communication this is sometimes difficult. Caterers, florists, etc are given specific instructions, times, etc. but photographers are often left to their own volitions and this can lead to problems, both with the flow of the wedding and the end product if the photographer and wedding party/guests are not on the same page. Feel free to request to sit down with your photographer weeks before the wedding to fully discuss the event to ensure that everyone is happy and as stress free as possible.
