Commissioners discuss funding for new justice center

COSHOCTON – The Coshocton County Commissioners met with Michael Antonille to discuss USDA financing for a new county justice center. There has been a need in the county for a new justice center for quite some time, and with the recent purchase of an empty lot, the commissioners are beginning to look for financing options. Antonille gave a brief presentation on the benefits and requirements through USDA programs. Through the program, only loan financing can be used to construct a new facility. A grant/loan combination can be used to purchase a new vehicle or through water/sewer loans, but not when building a new facility. Antonille said that now would be the best time to construct the new justice center because of the lower rates. Currently, the USDA program has a rate of 3 1/8 percent and is a fixed rate. He explained that some loans can be long-term and could go up to 40 years. Antonille left an application with the county commissioners for their consideration. PROJECT The fourth graders at Coshocton Elementary School have been working The commissioners also announced at the meeting that they are looking hard on making their own landform project. They learned from Mrs. Yoder all about into installing interior and exterior security cameras at Coshocton County landforms and had to make their own continent that contained five different landforms Job and Family Services, County Services Building, and Title Department. that they learned about. COLUMBUS – A run of low monthly natural gas costs and residential bills will continue into February for Columbia Gas of Ohio customers. And, in addition to lower residential bills, customers are receiving added value as part of their monthly payment. Customers are expected to see an average February bill of $93.07, a decrease of $23.16 from the average February 2015 bill of $116.23. This decrease is significant, as February is traditionally the month when – due to the weather – homes typically see the highest consumption of natural gas. The lower bill is thanks, in part, to a lower natural gas costs. The February Standard Choice Offer (SCO) price is 35 cents per Ccf (100 cubic feet), compared to 43 cents per Ccf last year. February’s natural gas costs are the lowest February costs since 1995, when consumers paid customers paid about 30 cents per Ccf. Columbia Gas of Ohio customers are receiving much more than lower prices this month. Compared to a decade ago, customer’s bills now reflect the fixed delivery charges. With the implementation of the Accelerated Gas Mains Replacement Program (AMRP), customers are benefitting from safer, more reliable service. Finally, customer bills reflect actual bill readings each month with the elimination of the bi-monthly estimated bill. Customers wishing to save even more can take advantage of the company’s energy efficiency programs. Generous rebates are available on setback thermostats and efficient showerheads; customers can order on the web, over the phone or mail in a rebate form. We have young kids playing on adult teams and it works for us.” Last year, Hopewell’s black team won the Division II State Title, the red team took third place in Division V and the skills team competed at state with three people winning gold and three taking home silver. They have high hopes to bring home another round of honors even though both teams moved up a division, but the season isn’t just about winning games and competitions. “They learn a lot about respect for themselves, their teammates and their coaches, to trust and about work ethic,” Collins said. “They also learn how to handle adversity. If a play doesn’t work they try another one or if they lose they work on getting better for next time.” The Division I team will hit the tournament trail the weekend of Feb. 20-21 and Division IV tournament action takes place Feb. 27-28. FEBRUARY 20TH, 1966 The goal of a fundraising campaign aimed at erecting a courtyard memorial immortalizing Coshocton’s children felled in war was $7,500. Construction would be handled by Coshocton Memorials. The monument would be 15 feet high and bear the inscription “In lasting tribute to the sons and daughters of Coshocton County, who served in the wars of their country.” A pair of wings spanning 15 feet would sit at the base of the monument. Sprawled across them was to be an inscription that read “Let none forget they gave their all - and faltered not when came the call.” The campaign sought to solicit funding from the community. Letters were being mailed out to veterans and veteran organizations, asking them to contribute to the fund. That year’s Memorial Day service was to be held in the shadow of the new monument where it will be dedicated by three speakers. FEBRUARY 21ST, 1976 On Friday night, the 1975-76 regular basketball season came to a close. Three AA class teams emerged from our county: River View, Ridgewood and Coshocton. They each won 96 percent of their games, winning eight out of every nine games, ending the season with a 48-6 record. River View completed their first 18-0 season since 1961, and the Bears had won 43 of their last 44 games of the past two years. No less than six men earned double figures with Jerry Olinger’s 23 and Mike Moyer’s 16 leading the pack. The Redskins finished their second best season in history with a 65-51 win over Dover, earning them a share of the Cardinal Conference title. The 16-2 season is only topped by the 17-1 1964-65 season. FEBRUARY 21ST, 1986 Gospel singer and Baltic native Kathy Stevens performed at Gospel Hill Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The lead singer of the “Shaw Sisters” began singing in 1968 and travelled the States performing country music. In 1976, she became a born-again Christian and started a Gospel Ministry almost five years ago. Her group is now called the “Day Star” and she continues to play with her sister and brother-inlaw Margaret and Jerry Sexton, as well as their bandmate David Milhoun.

Emergency responders honored

THANK YOU Rarely do public servants receive the recognition and honor that they deserve. This is especially true of first responders such as police, fire fighters, and EMTs. In January, the First Presbyterian Church of Warsaw celebrated those who serve their community in the Walhonding Valley Fire District. In total, there were 16 men and women who were thanked for their service. Despite fighting a fire until the 2:30 a.m. they made it to the Presbyterian Church by 9 a.m. Jesus taught that the greatest among us are those who serve. Firefighters certainly do this on a regular basis as they help friends and strangers, put their lives in danger, and live by the motto “First In, Last Out.” Christians from every corner of the world can learn from firefighters. We not only champion their work, but we aspire to care for the world with the same level of devotion, responsibility, and risk. When you see a first responder, please remember that a hand shake, a smile, and a few words of thanks go a long way in showing appreciation. PHOTO CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON

In an interview with The Beacon following the meeting, Superintendent Summers said, “Our next step is to meet as a steering committee and make the official announcement. At that point, once we make the announcement that this plan that they’ve been building and working on and trying to decide on for the better part of two years is the way we are going to go then there will be a levy committee that is formed. That committee will now start using the steering committee for advice and guidance on the direction to go and work in conjunction with the board.” “At this point it’s about the work, the work now is to go out and tell people what the plan is. Most of the community has heard about what’s going on, I’ve had a lot of questioning in the last three or four months about where we’re headed, are we looking at two elementary schools, are we going from four to one, or four to two. As you know now, we’re going from four to one. I’m sure there are going to be a lot of questions, a lot of planning, but the next important phase of this is to take it before the voters of River View and get their approval with it. Once that’s secured, then we start designing.” MARK@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

WARSAW - The River View School Board members in attendance unanimously approved a resolution from the Ohio School Facilities Commission to proceed with the Master Facilities Plan for a proposed new elementary school that would be adjoined to the junior high at the regular scheduled meeting on Monday evening, Feb. 8. The plan also calls for comprehensive renovations of the current junior high and high school to bring these facilities up to code. River View Superintendent Dalton Summers said, “This plan addresses all of the needs identified by our steering committee and is the best bang for our buck. This is also the cheapest plan.” Members of the steering committee have been meeting for over two years discussing various options and plans that included the possibility of two elementary schools being built. Summers said, “Our job is to look out for the kids in the district. This is the first step in a very, very long climb. This is a school district plan – we are one district. When the kids walk in to a school in our district, they are River View kids.” Board member Larry Pepper said, “In order to give the kids the education they deserve we need to do this. We’ve done as much to the buildings as can be done. It’s about one campus, one heartbeat, and one goal with our kids in mind.”

Citizens pack council chambers for meeting

COSHOCTON – City Council heard from several of the concerned citizens who packed council chambers at their Feb. 8 meeting before giving a first reading to an ordinance intended to raise water rates. Many of them wanted to know what was being done with money left over in the general fund, some questioned the raises that government officials are receiving and others questioned how they could possibly afford to create a new position for someone to enforce ordinances if the city is in such dire need of money. However, there were a few people like Stan Braxton who were at the meeting to show council their support.

Recognize your need. Romans 3:23 tells us, “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” 1. All of us are sinners and we must admit our need of a Savior. Repent of your sins. Because God is completely holy and we are sinners, our sins separate us from God. 2. By confessing your sins and turning from them you will find forgiveness. “Repent,” means to make a 180

degree turnaround. The Word of God promises : 1 John 1:9, “ If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Believe in Jesus. This is the most important step! God worked a miracle when He sent His only Son, 3. Jesus Christ, to die so He could pay for all our sins. Put your faith in Him and believe in His power to save

you. The Word of God tells us in John 3:16, “ For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.”

Receive His salvation. God has given us this free gift but we still must accept it. Thank God for sending 4. Jesus to die on the cross for you. Thank God for His amazing love, mercy and forgiveness. Then ask Him

to live in your heart. His promise to us is clear in John 1:12, “ But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become the children of God.”

Confess your faith. The Word of God assures us in Romans 10:9 “If you confess with your mouth the 5. Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”. You have

been born again and are now a part of God’s family.

Now, tell someone else what Jesus has done in your life. Find a Bible Believing Church and attend it regularly and begin to grow and mature in your walk with the Lord.

Pray this prayer, “ Lord Jesus, Thank You for dying on the cross for me. I recognize that You are the true Son of God, sent to the earth to pay the full price for all of our sins. I believe that you were raised from the dead. You are God Almighty, and I surrender to Your Lordship. I am sorry that I have lived my life apart from you. Please forgive me for thinking that my life could have true meaning without you. I turn from my sins and choose to follow You. I give You my hurts and fears, my unforgiveness, my pride, my greed and all the garbage from my past. Thank You that I can start my life over again with You. I ask this in Your name. Amen.

Participants will have three to four minutes to eat as many hot wings as possible. The top three in each category will receive prizes and the winner will receive a trophy. A new feature to the event this year will be wild turkey hunting and calling demonstrations by Tim Mullen and Jim West. Between the two, they have called and judged in events such as the US Open Championship and National Calling Championship. They have also worked together to organize and run the US Open Calling Championship at River View High School in 1991, 1992, and 1993. “Since turkey season opens in mid-April, we thought it would be fun to offer something turkey-related to help people get in the right mood for the next hunting season,” said Pastor Neal Dearyan, pastor of Chili Crossroads Bible Church. “We like to keep it (the event) fresh. We always like to add something new to make it different or better than the year before.” The Wild Game Dinner will have almost 100 lbs. of pork roasted outside and almost 100 lbs. of pork roasted at a local butcher shop. There will also be a whole deer roasted to enjoy. The

community is invited to bring in food to share as well. Other food such as salad, potato dishes, desserts, and many others will be offered. “We have eight tables literally bowing from the weight of all this food,” said Dearyan. “I tell people you can be a vegetarian and still leave with a full stomach.” The event is free and the public is invited to attend. More people come each year and last year, Dearyan said at least 400 people came through the doors. “We try to be creative and come up with events folks in the community will enjoy,” said Dearyan. “We believe that God is relevant and His word is relevant. We try to keep the church visible in the community. Every event we do has a focus on God and His gift to the world through His Son.” Next year, the church is planning to have a turkey-calling competition on the Saturday before the Wild Game Dinner. The winner from that competition will do the demonstration for the dinner. BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

Now in its 58th year, the chorale is a mixed chorus of 60 men and women dedicated to the performance of a wide variety of European and American choral music. Those students invited to join the chorale have been offered an opportunity to share their God-given musical talent with audiences all over the world through the blending of their voices. The chorale’s unique and exciting sound is testament to each singer’s dedication and skill. The chorale has traveled locally, domestically, and throughout the world for many years, with international destinations such as Canada, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. The Malone University Chamber Choir is comprised of 24 singers chosen through

competitive auditions from the ranks of the Malone University Chorale. This highly-selective choir performs several styles of music, from a cappella classics to contemporary small-group works. The choir made their debut in February of 2009 when they performed Felix Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang, Op. 52 with the Canton Symphony Orchestra. The Chamber Choir represents Malone University throughout the school year at area concerts and traveled with the University Chorale in June of 2010 on a tour of central Europe including concerts in Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic. They perform as part of Christmas at Malone, a much-loved tradition on the campus of Malone University, held each year in December. This May, the Chamber Choir will participate in a service-learning trip to Nairobi, Kenya and surrounding areas.

NEW PHILADELPHIA - The amazing Cirque Zíva performed by the Golden Dragon Acrobats will be on stage Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Kent State University at Tuscarawas Performing Arts Center. This family-friendly entertainment features 25 skilled performers who are acrobats, athletes, actors and artists who have trained since childhood. It is a fast paced, technically innovative and beautifully presented show. Tickets for Cirque Zíva range in price from $28 to $48 and can be purchased at the Performing Arts Center box office, online at www.kent.edu/tusc/pac or by calling 330-3086400. The box office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free parking is available for all shows. Producer Danny Chang, artistic director of the Golden Dragon Acrobats, created Cirque Zíva in 2011 for a 10-week engagement at Asbury Park Boardwalk’s Paramount Theatre, the first-ever summer run held at the venue in its more than 80-year history. It was an instant success in Asbury Park, earning critical acclaim and packed houses. The large cast and spectacular set designs illustrate the best of Chang’s brand of artistic merit, high production value and solid commitment to cultural exchange. Of special note is Cirque Zíva lighting

director Tony Tucci, the recipient of two B. Iden Payne Awards and Critics Table awards for lighting. Credits include: American Ballet Theatre’s Configurations with Mikhail Baryshnikov and the video “Baryshnikov, Dancer and The Dance;” Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre; works by Cynthia Gregory, Fernando Bujones; and Suzanne Farrell; and for 1996 Summer Olympics, designed the Cultural Olympiad, which showcased six national and international companies. Chang and his Golden Dragon Acrobats continue their relentless, 30+ year U.S. touring schedule of centuries-old Chinese art form. Since 1985, they remain the only Chinese acrobatic company touring year-round in the United States, and present more than 200 performances annually. In 2005, their Broadway debut and seven-week run at the New Victory Theater earned two prestigious New York Drama Desk Awards nominations (Angela Chang for Best Choreography and Danny Chang for Most Unique Theatrical Experience). Answering the new market demand from U.S. presenters, Chang restructured the Golden Dragon Acrobats in 1998 to form Asian Artists Productions, Inc. or AAPI. While the new company continued to produce and tour the Golden Dragon Acrobats, AAIP expanded to create theatrically elaborate, resident-shows like Circo Magnifico, Dream, Pagoda, Cirque D’or and others, each for a specific US market. Lien Chi Chang officially established the Chinese Golden Dragon Acrobats in 1967 with his family whose member included Danny Chang, his sister and other students. Danny Chang, who often traveled with his father’s Golden Dragon Acrobats, was later chosen by the National Acrobats Troupe of Republic of China to lead the various world tour produced by the most prestige acrobat school in Taiwan. After more than 17 years of apprenticeship under his dad and several years of world tour, Danny Chang was ready to step up as the President of the Golden Dragon Acrobats when Lien Chi Chang accepted the head coaching job at the National Taiwan College of Performing Arts. Today, the Golden Dragon Acrobats have been recognized as the preeminent Chinese acrobatic company in the United States. As the director and the producer, Chang has built a solid reputation based on his talents as both an acrobatic performer and artistic director. Every year, along with the choreographer, also his wife, Angela Chang, attend different acrobatic competitions to constantly select the most elite performers to join the Golden Dragon Acrobats. The Golden Dragon Acrobats count among their distinctions being a seven-time recipient of the National Association of Campus Activities Entertainer of the Year Award, the Campus Activities Today’s Performer of the Year Award and, most recently, two most prestigious New York Drama Desk Award nominations for their Broadway performances. In recent years, individual members of the Golden Dragons have been recipients of awards at the Henan Regional Acrobatic Competition, the China National Acrobatic Competition, the National Teen Acrobatic Competition, the Italian National Acrobatic Competition, the International Young Adult Acrobatic Competition in Japan and the President’s Award at the International Acrobatic Competition, and have performed for President Bill Clinton and other leaders at the APEC meeting in Shanghai, China. OPEN HOUSE Three and a half year old Deputy Henata took a bite out of Craig Reveal, who had on proper protection of course, at the annual Coshocton County Career Center’s Open House as part of a demonstration exercise. Deputy Henata is a Dutch Shepherd and has been with the sheriff’s office since the retirement of Deputy Dingo in March 2015. Before her time at the sheriff’s office, she spent six weeks with Storm Dog Tactical, a K-9 police dog training facility. She has been a great asset to the sheriff’s office and has aided in multiple drug seizures and criminal apprehensions. “We just wanted to let the kids see how she works,” said Deputy Dave Stone. “This might be a career path they want to take and this shows them the more exciting part of law enforcement.” The open house also featured a variety of local vendors and demonstrations from different departments within the career center. CHOCOLATE EXTRAVAGANZA The Coshocton County Career Center was crowded last Saturday, Feb. 13 as the Pomerene Center for the Arts presented its annual Chocolate Extravaganza fundraiser. People perused the tables that were filled to the brim with cookies, brownies, cheesecakes, tortes, and every other dessert you can imagine, all covered in chocolate. Barefoot McCoy had people up on their feet dancing to the sounds of his folk music. CDs were available for purchase for $10. Pictured here enjoying a piece of cake is one and a half year old Nikolai Clark with his dad, Adam Clark, both of Warsaw. After Nikolai enjoyed the chocolate, he made sure to balance out all that chocolate with a healthy snack as he was later seen munching on an apple. BEACON PHOTO BY BETH SCOTT
