The children’s area of the West Lafayette Library was the scene for four little girls to hear a tale about “Farmer Brown Shears His Sheep – a Yarn about Wool”, last week. Not only did the girls get to hear Library employee Cyndi Shutt read the story with enthusiasm and energy, but they also

received a piece of yarn tied around their finger and a letter “Y”. Pictured from left to right are; Ella Grote (age 4), Olivia Grote (age 2), Megan Mainwaring (age 3), and Sydney Perrico (age 2). Cyndi Shutt is pictured displaying the book mentioned above. Pre-School Story Time at the West

They say that winter is a good time to ponder and reflect on life. I’m not quite sure why it is just wintertime but I would imagine the shorter – and colder – days have much to do with that. The holiday’s – if you can wind down some from the hustle and bustle of the season – are also a fine time to reflect. I have always found the time around New Year’s Day to represent that moment in time when we can stop and pause for some reflection. To say that 2008 was a year of change for me would be a great understatement. Leaving a job and career to start a business in an uncertain economic climate could be unnerving at best, but this was rapidly followed by the passing of my wife’s father, John Eberwine, a man that I respected and appreciated very much. His quiet and unassuming demeanor meant that I carried a lot of the conversation when we were together but I always counted him as a friend and mentor. I learned a lot from him. Then the nationwide economic collapse and challenging times in our

community created some unsettling moments for the future of The Coshocton County Beacon and the business that my wife and I started on April 1, 2008. But as with all things, there is good news. Our daughter, Jessica, is engaged to a wonderful young man, Aaron Mencer and they are planning a December, 2009 wedding. Somewhere in all of that our son started his freshman year of high school and is accompanied by all of the angst and delight that travels with a teenager that will soon be turning 16 – and you all know what that means! I have told you all of that to get to this. 2008 was a year of pivotal change in our community, our country and the world. Technology is racing ahead at full speed – grab on to it or you might be left behind! Our nation elected our first ever African American as President, and Barack Obama has his job cut out for him. Change is rapid and uncertain at best. Our nation’s housing industry, media, the domestic auto industry and many other segments of our economy are ripe for change, and struggling to meet the competition head-

on. A glance at your 401K, mutual funds or stock investments could leave you fearful. With all of this said, I am confident in the future of our community and our country because we have the ability to think on our feet and make the necessary innovative changes to move forward. Whether it is our own community working together to make things happen – they say that necessity is the mother of invention – or the elected leaders of our country pulling together to embrace the changes that need to be made, you can rest assured that we will pull out of this downward spiral and head upwards. The majority of the global economy rests squarely on the shoulders of the United States, and we are just too good as a people to fail. How do you like that for some real pressure? To make it happen, we need to support our leaders and the people that are making things happen to improve our community, our region and our nation. There is a lot at stake and we are more than up to the challenge.

Economic Development Report T.J. Justice, Executive Director Coshocton Port Authority Welcome to 2009, a year that I hope will bring new economic opportunities to all of us in Coshocton County. To begin the New Year, I'm pleased to announce a fun contest made possible by the Schooler Family Foundation. The Coshocton Port Authority is giving individuals and organizations an opportunity this month to submit

ideas that are attainable and will result in the creation of new jobs or retaining the jobs we already have. There is prize money for the top two suggestions with the best idea receiving $1500 and the second best being rewarded $500. The contest is open to anyone and anywhere but suggestions should relate only to Coshocton County. Interesting, creative ideas have already been submitted and each will be accepted up until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 30. The port authority, Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce, Coshocton County Convention & Visitors Bureau and many other organizations work collectively every day to boost the local economy. The idea campaign came out of various discussions with the Schooler Family Foundation which has a rich history of philanthropy and community involvement. The concept is simple and that is to engage the community at large to

Page 5

www.coshoctoncountybeacon.com • Classified Hotline 622-4ADS be involved in a process that may lead to some very good ideas. In a lot of ways, the contest compliments so many new initiatives that took root last year. Should Coshocton County have a brand name? The Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce promotes the Cincinnati Tri-State area as CincinnatiUSA. Ohio itself for many years promoted itself as "The Heart of it All" and now uses "Ohio Means Business" as its slogan or brand name. Perhaps someone could suggest a brand name that could be used on our websites and all promotional and advertising products that is catchy and promotes what Coshocton County has to offer. Perhaps you have an idea on a new incentive that might attract a business. Maybe there is a marketing concept that hasn't been attempted that should be considered. It is my hope that the top two ideas are able to be

implemented. To learn more about the contest, visit www. coshoctonportauthority. com, and click on the "Idea Contest" link. You will find the contest rules and a form that may be used.

Ideas may be submitted electronically to tjjustice@ coshoctoncounty.net or mailed to Idea Contest, Coshocton Port Authority, 106 S. Fourth Street, Coshocton, OH, 43812. For the old fashioned, feel free

to visit the Progress Center at Main and Fourth Streets in Coshocton to pick up or drop off an Idea Contest form. Contest winners will be announced in March.

Thank You!

As we have ended another year and entered into 2009, I would like to send a very, very, big and heartfelt, “THANK YOU” to each and everyone who has helped in one way or another with the Community Food Pantry and the Community Outreach Dinners this past year. You have sacrificed your time, money, energy, showing your love and concern for our community. You worked, cooked, baked, donated, packed grocery bags, pushed grocery carts in the ice, snow, rain and heat to people’s cars, unloaded trucks, served people and anything else you were asked to do. I Thank all of the Pastors who allowed offerings and food drives for the pantry to take place in their churches. God Bless each of you! Local businesses and schools, VFW’s and American Legion, AmVets, Kraft Foods and Annin Flag Co., private individuals, we could have done nothing without any of you. May God’s very best always be yours. For the Community Outreach Dinner on Thanksgiving Day we delivered 433 meals and fed 117 people in the church including our help. For the Christmas Dinner we delivered 422 meals and including our help we served 170 meals. There were a total of 82 turkeys and 39 hams cooked for the meals. This year there was not much left over from each dinner. For the Food Pantry we purchased and gave out 203,251 pounds of food at a cost of $39,788 and this does not include all of the food drives and such because we are not able to weigh it in plus around two thousand pounds of deer meat through the FHFH. We also received and gave out 111,565 pounds of fresh produce and this was at no cost to us. We are currently serving over 700 people through the Food Pantry at this time. The need is great but God is always bigger than anything we can face in this life. Thank You for caring about our community and stay encouraged in the Lord. As we work together we will come through these challenging times and be better people for it. Sincerely,

Pastor Mark Granger - New Life Ministries

Family Physicians of Coshocton President, Dr. Douglas Virostko (seated, left) and CCMH Administrator, Greg Nowak(seated, right) finalize the agreement for the hospital to acquire the Family Physicians practice in the presence of physician owners (standing, l-r) Dr. Robert Gwinn, Dr. Jerold Meyer, and Dr. David Lozowski. On the wall behind them are portraits of the practice’s founders, Dr. Robert Johnson (left) and Dr. Norman Wright.

Coshocton Hospital and Family Physicians of Coshocton have announced that an agreement has been reached to allow the two organizations to work together in a professional environment that will benefit both entities. The move was made for several reasons: to provide a better mechanism for hiring and retaining physicians for the practice and our com-

(to Dr. Wright), Dr. W. R. Agricola, who practiced in Newcomerstown for 50plus years. He described to them a quaint, small town that was in need of new physicians. Drs. Wright and Johnson purchased a home at 646 Chestnut Street, with offices on the first floor and living quarters on the second floor. The house was eventually razed and a new, modern facility was built. In 1996, the practice was moved to its current location on Browns Lane. Over time, new physicians joined them and the practice continued to grow. Currently, there are six physicians, a Physician’s Assistant, and a Nurse Practitioner providing services. Dr. Virostko, president of Family Physicians, and Miller are both pleased with the affiliation and are expecting the process to be as seamless as possible. During the transition, if you experience any difficulties you are encouraged to contact the staff who will assist you in working through the situation.

not fully completed, it is anticipated to be finished in the very near future. The first thing you will notice is the new name as a result of the new affiliation: Coshocton Hospital Family Physicians Clinic. You will notice that the bill will come to you differently and other minute details. And other than that, the goal is that you will not see any other changes. Actual patient care will remain unchanged and will be rendered with the same quality of care as before. Robert Miller, CFO of Coshocton Hospital, indicates that the clinic, now officially called a hospitalbased clinic, operates under different governmental regulations than private physician practices. Hospital-based clinics were established by Medicare to assist hospitals in rural areas in its recruitment of physicians and operation of health services Family Physicians have a rich history in Coshocton that started in 1952. Dr. Robert Johnson and Dr. Norman Wright, both deceased, founded the practice after talking with their friend and brother-in-law

A recycling trailer is now in place at the intersection of State Route 206 and County Road 20. The trailer was purchased by the Coshocton County Recycling and Litter Prevention Office with funds from the Coshocton-Fairfield-Licking-Perry Solid Waste District. Program Manager Jeff Wherley said the trailer

will accept the same materials as the other eight trailers currently located in Coshocton County. “We aim for household materials with our recycling program,” Wherley said. “So we take the most commonly-recycled materials, including aluminum and steel cans, cardboard, newspaper and magazines, and plastics number one and two.” The trailers are divided by material and each bin is clearly marked. Wherley

said for the most part, people have been very good about sorting their recyclables into the correct bins. “We have very little contamination with non-recyclables, and people are pretty good about sorting their recyclables,” he said. “Our biggest challenge is teaching people how to tell the different plastics apart, and making sure they bring us only number one or two plastic.” The trailer is available 24/7 to all county residents. In 2008, the recycling trailers in Coshocton collected more than 100 tons of materials for recycling.

Airport Runway Extension Closer to Reality able for corporate travelers. It shows that a community has their priorities in order if they have an airport that is corporate-friendly.” Prior to coming to Coshocton, Justice worked with the Governors Office of Appalachia and traveled throughout the area. He says that the Coshocton Airport is by far the nicest airport he’s been to in the 29 Ohio Appalachian counties. “The airport shows well when business people visit it,” said Justice. “It’s also unique that we already have some businesses located near the airport and the potential is there to include new airport-related businesses.” Justice feels Coshocton County is uniquely repositioning itself during a recession. “For the Airport and their board to take this proactive step puts Coshocton in a much better position for when things begin to turn around economically,” stated Justice. “We

will be prepared when other communities may not be.” Former State Senator, Joy Padgett agrees. “Opportunity and chance favor a prepared community,” said Padgett. “We have to prepare in multiple ways at the same time. While we are working on the highway, it is also important to have a corporate airport available for companies in the area. Coshocton was developed around transportation – the rivers, canals and later the railroad. An extended runway would bring a different and additional transportation source to the mix and truly highlight this area.” Padgett feels that having the runway extended to 5000 feet would be an important reason for keeping Coshocton in the mix of potential sites for companies looking to locate here. “Site selectors are always looking for reasons to eliminate a site for further consideration,” she said. “Airport facilities are one

of the factors they usually consider.” The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) procedures for determining runway length requirements indicate that a 4,400-foot runway is sufficient for small business aircraft. The existing runway at the Coshocton Airport is 4,099 feet long. The FAA will therefore assist in funding a runway extension at the Richard Downing Airport to 4,400 feet. Insurance companies for corporate aircraft require a 5,000-foot runway. Therefore, the Coshocton County Regional Airport Authority (CCRAA) along with the Coshocton County Commissioners have determined that the runway extension needs to be 5,000 feet and have made this a key priority to position Co-

shocton County at the forefront of the competition for business and economic development. Construction on the runway extension is planned for 2010. Any donations made to the Runway Extension Project are tax deductible since the Richard Downing Airport is a government-owned entity. Donations can be made to the Richard Downing Airport Runway Extension Project, 24569 Airport Road, Coshocton. For more information, contact Airport Administrator, Bethel Toler, at (740) 622-2252 or betheltoler@ coshoctoncounty.net. The Airport’s website is www. coshoctonairport.com.

question usually comes up about the quality of the airport and the length of the runway. “The runway extension at the airport would give us another tool in the toolbox when we are working at bringing business to the area,” said Justice. “It’s not just a matter of convenience. It’s a matter of doing business. It gives businesses a reason to stay in Coshocton or to locate in the area.” Dan Truett of SmurfitStone Container agrees. Smurfit-Stone’s corporate plane is not able to land at the Coshocton Airport until the runway is extended. They currently have to land at the Zanesville or Columbus airports. “A larger airport would help our existing businesses by ensuring the viability of our facilities and making them more accessible,” he said. “We already have a first-class airport terminal building that is very suit-

The runway extension at Coshocton County’s Richard Downing Airport is getting closer to reality. Grants were received in December toward the $900,000 project that will extend the runway to 5,000 feet. The Coshocton Foundation and the Montgomery Foundation each pledged $100,000 toward the project. Of the $900,000 price tag for the extension, the FAA will fund half the cost, so approximately $450,000 was the amount the Airport was looking to raise. Money from the past three Air Shows will be used toward this goal. Matching funds were also needed to be eligible for an OMEGA grant that was applied for by the Coshocton County Commissioners and Port Authority Director, T.J. Justice. Justice says that when they are discussing Coshocton’s pluses with a potential business, the

The correct answers to the contest are as follows; Higbee’s is the store that Ralphie visits with his parents when he goes to see Santa Claus; Swede is the name of the guy that asks Ralphie’s father what the leg lamp is; Lifebuoy is the soap that Ralphie’s mother washes out his mouth with; the tire that goes flat is the passenger side front; getting ready for school is like extended deep sea diving; Ms Shields is the name of Ralphie’s teacher; Flick is the name of Ralphie’s friend and the correct answer to the bonus question is Oldsmobile. Some of our really brave contestants even made an effort to identify the model of the car! Those responses were conflicting so we will save that for next year! Thanks for participating!

The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum invites the public to experience the twelfth annual children’s art exhibit entitled A Playground of Color, showcasing artwork of our area’s elementary age students in grades 1—6. The exhibit runs from Jan. 11 – Mar. 8, and is also showing concurrently at the Coshocton and West Lafayette Libraries. Works are chosen by the students’ art teachers, and all city and county schools, as well as home school families, participate. A Playground of Color is JHM’s largest exhibit— over 250 two and threedimensional pieces are displayed. Take a walk around the gallery and you’ll understand that these students aren’t just playing with crayons and scissors. They NG TI S! P T CE IEN AC AT W P NO EW N

are learning about perspective, primitive cave art, Expressionism, Pop Art, still life, graphic art and more. You’ll find just about every style and medium of art in the show—watercolors, pastels, mixed media-collage works, clay and paper sculptures, pen and crayon. Their work has energy and originality as they present a variety of images, from landscapes and animal life to tribal masks and self portraits. The public is invited to the artists’ reception on Sunday, January 11th, from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. Admission is free. At the opening reception students have a chance to show off their talents to the public as well as experience the Museum with their families. Students, families and visitors can also walk throughout the entire Muse-

um, which exposes them to art from around the world. Art teachers find it opens their students’ eyes to other people’s work when they see what is created by their peers, and they are hopeful that the experience generates incentive and inspiration for new ideas. A Playground of Color appeals to young and old alike. You won’t want to miss this exhibit. It will make your day warmer and brighter. You may even be inspired to release your creative spirit at home. After all, if our young can make such captivating work, why can’t you? The Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 1:00 – 4:30 P.M. Admission is $3 for Adults, $2 for Children, and $8 for Families. Wednesdays are free for Coshocton County residents. Museum hours are 1:00 to 4:30 Tuesday through Sunday. (NAPSI)-The New Year is the best time to start making simple changes in one’s life. Whether it is healthier eating or making more time for exercise, starting a new plan can have great beneďŹ ts. By simply incorporating some small changes into your daily routine, you will begin to see the difference in yourself and your health. Consider these worthwhile adjustments for healthier living: • Drink Smart: Instead of drinking fruit juices that contain high levels of sugar, switch to a lowsugar variety, like grapefruit juice. It not only contains vitamins C, B complex, E and K, but it also helps relieve common cold symptoms such as sore throat and congestion, ďŹ ghts insomnia, promotes healthy digestion and aids in weight loss. It’s not just one beneďŹ cial nutrient found in grapefruit juice, but rather the combination of several natural ingredients that does the trick. • Get Moving: Studies have shown that a little bit of exercise can go a long way. Regardless of your weight, gender or age, exercise helps boost your mood, increases stamina and improves cardiovascular health. Try 30 minutes of brisk walking three times a week to burn extra calories and tone muscles in the legs and abdomen for a more ďŹ t physique. • Brush Up: Teeth whitening isn’t the only way to see the difference in your smile. Historic Roscoe Village is proud to be celebrating 40 years since the restoration of the Toll House, the first building to be restored in this 1800s canal town! We have a great Anniversary Celebration planned for 2009 and would like to share it with all our wonderful guests! We will be offering many exciting and educational activities without any charge except for the Member’s Trip in April. The month of January un-

folds a wonderful “40 years of restoration” display. Guests are invited to attend a fascinating presentation on transportation featuring antique toys in February or meet Captain Pearl R. Nye, a canal boat captain in March. The “History of Roscoe’s Gardens” lecture and slide show in September will focus on the background of the Roscoe Gardens and plants featured. Roscoe Village Members will adventure out for an exciting fun-filled day in

April for a member’s trip. Members will also be invited to attend the Annual Member’s Dinner for good food and great fellowship! The Roscoe Round Table in May is sure to bring out many wonderful friends of the village to share old village pictures and the early years of the restoration. This is also the time we will introduce a beautiful new flower garden to our existing gardens.

NEW LISTINGS! Bears Recognizing Victims

In 2008 this school employee team returned for the third time and once more increased their fundraising efforts. They were also instrumental in getting purple ribbons out to many residences so that the 3 Days of Relay could be more visible throughout the county.

In June and August guests can experience a fun “Towpath” tour where you will visit the Exhibit Hall and stroll along the towpath with a costumed interpreter while information about the towpath, basin, locks and lots of canal history information is shared. October brings about the “Roscoe Cemetery” tour, certain to be joined by a couple of friendly spirits from Roscoe’s early history. In July, guests will be escorted through the Toll House, our first restored historical building, where they may view the different interior and exterior build-

ing techniques and discuss the restoration project. Visit the Dr. Maro Johnson House for “Christmas Open House with the Johnsons” in November. We will enlighten our guests on the Christmas decorations and canal era ethnic Christmas celebrations. The ever-popular Christmas Candlelightings will be a memorable one with participation from special guests for the third candlelighting ceremony in December. We invite all of you to join us throughout 2009 for these very special events. You may obtain additional information on our website
