PARAMOUNT CLASSICS Celebrating 100 years of Paramount we present two of their timeless classics, presented for the first time following their recent digital restoration.

Sunday 18th | 4.30pm | Gate Cinema

With the idiosyncratic American fable Harold and Maude, countercultural director Hal Ashby fashioned what would become the cult classic of its era. Working from a script by Colin Higgins, Ashby tells the story of the emotional and romantic bond between a death-obsessed young man from a wealthy family and a devil-may-care, bohemian octogenarian. Equal parts gallows humor and romantic innocence, Harold And Maude dissolves the line between darkness and light along with the ones that separate people by class, gender, and age, and it features indelible performances and a remarkable soundtrack by Cat Stevens.

John Huston’s The African Queen is the heart-rending tale of two companions with wildly differing personalities who find themselves catapulted into a love affair as they travel downriver in East Africa at the beginning of World War I. Romantic, exciting and often hilarious in parts, this is the pinnacle of Hollywood’s Golden Age of escapism. Based on the 1935 novel of the same name by C.S. Forester, Humphrey Bogart excels as a gin-swilling river trader, unshaven and unorthodox throughout, with Katherine Hepburn playing a prim African missionary spinster, both attempting to escape the Germans via the Ulonga-Bora River. Director Huston crafted a thoroughly quixotic film, which also served as his first outing in colour and sealed his reputation as one of Hollywood’s definitive directors of the era.
