OBITUARIES Mary Frances Lease Mary Frances Lease, age 78, of Dudleyville, arrived in her promised place of eternity on Thursday, May 23, 2019.

As well as being in the presence of Jesus, she is having a blessed reunion with the many loved ones that preceded her in death. They include: her parents, LeeRoy and Vivian “Dutch” Schoonover; husband, James; son, Charles Boyd; daughter, Theresa Fisher; son-in-law, Chad DeCino; and grandson, Christopher DeCino. Frances had an enormous amount of love for her family and friends. She always let you know how much you meant to her. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, attending church, watching and caring for her many, many variations of birds. Her most important role was being a mother and grandmother. She loved getting together with

her family to play dominos. She’ll be sorely missed by all. She is survived by her son, David (Camie) Boyd of Kearny; daughter, Char DeCino of Dudleyville; seven grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren; sister, Iva (Amos) Cline of Oracle; brother, Richard (Gayle) Schoonover of Tucson; and many nieces and nephews. The family is grateful for THEMA and Griffith’s Mortuary for their care and assistance.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I

Tariffs on Mexico will harm Pinal County

n just the past month, we have seen some impressive articles about our grand county: “Pinal County prepares for influx of thousands of new jobs” “Pinal County on the road to becoming an automotive manufacturing juggernaut” “Pinal County solar project picks up tech, retail, mining

and government customers” “Pinal County has some economic lessons for Gila County” On Friday we learned that one person can throw that all away. I’m speaking of our President. On Friday, President Trump announced that he will

Arizona Fire Fighters caution public: fraudulent fundraising phone calls happening statewide PHOENIX – The Professional Fire Fighters of Arizona, the state’s largest fire fighters’ organization, has issued a warning to Arizona consumers: Beware of telephone solicitors pretending to raise money for fire fighters’ charities. “These scam phone calls happen frequently and recently we have had reports of an uptick in fake charity solicitations,” said Bryan Jeffries, the president of the PFFA. “No reputable fire fighters organization in the state is using phone solicitors to raise money. If you get a phone call asking for a donation on behalf of an Arizona fire

Community Working Group to explore various local issues of interest on June 12 The Superior Community Working Group (CWG) will meet on Wednesday, June 12, to discuss issues of interest to members including community comments from the Kearny, Winkelman, and Hayden areas about a potential Resolution Copper Project tailings disposal site. This CWG meeting will be held at the Superior Chamber of Commerce from 6 to 8 p.m. The CWG includes residents and stakeholders from the Town of Superior, Queen Valley, Hewitt Station, Globe, Kearny, Winkelman, Hayden, the San Carlos Community and around the area. fighters’ group, it’s a fraud.” Consumers who get such calls are encouraged to take notes of the content of the call and the caller’s phone number, then contact the Arizona Attorney General’s Office either by phone or online. Consumer complaints can be filed at https://www.azag.gov/complaints/ consumer. Recent fake calls have included solicitors reportedly citing a group known as the “Fire Fighter Support Association.” According to Jeffries: “To my knowledge, that group has done nothing to support fire fighters in Arizona, nor do they have any affiliation with our organizations either at the state or local level. Every dollar donated to a fake group like this is a dollar siphoned away from legitimate charitable causes. That’s an absolute shame.” The PFFA represents more than 7,000 fire fighters across the state of Arizona. enact tariffs on Mexico in order to punish them for the influx of illegal immigration. First of all, the only people who will be hurt by these tariffs will be you and me by spending more on fruits and vegetables. Next, there are a lot of large projects slated to come to Pinal County in the next year such as Lucid Motors and Nikola Motors that depend upon favorable trade with Mexico. Our proximity to our neighbors to the south is one of the reasons they chose Pinal County for their multi-billion dollar enterprises that will also supply our residents with high paying jobs. Like a bad target shooter, the President is going to be hitting Americans (particularly Pinal County residents) hard by this tariff, meanwhile Mexico will feel little, if no effect. In the end, there will still be illegal immigration. Even the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Senators Sinema and McSally are against this bad idea. If Pinal County’s Economic Development engine is stopped by these tariffs and other actions of the President, I can guarantee you it will be extremely difficult, if not impossible to get it started again. We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to become a major player in the international markets, but with the swoop of one signature, we can see that go away forever. I am asking Governor Doug Ducey to stand against these tariffs and stand with Arizonans. Don’t let small minded ideas take away our shot at greatness. /s/ Pete Rios Supervisor, District 1 FROM $

Anheuser-Busch delivers emergency drinking water to volunteer firefighters nationwide; deliveries to help departments prepare for upcoming wildfire season

Last week, Anheuser-Busch began to deliver approximately 300,000 cans of emergency drinking water to 26 of the country’s volunteer fire departments, in partnership with the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC), to provide critical hydration to first responders in advance of wildfire season. The Copper Corridor had two departments who were the recipients of this delivery: Pinal Rural Fire & Medical District and Hayden Fire Department. Anheuser-Busch announced the expansion of its 30-yearold emergency drinking water program in April, and has committed to donating one million cans of clean drinking water in support of volunteer fire departments in 2019. “Eighty-three percent of the nation’s fire departments, which protect our communities from hazards of all kinds, are all- or mostly-volunteer,” said Steve Hirsch, Chair of the NVFC. “Funding for needed resources is a constant challenge for many of these departments, making this donation even more important as it directly supports the health and safety of our firefighters and the communities they serve.” To officially kick off the expanded program, the brewer has worked closely with the NVFC to identify and select some of the most vulnerable markets across the country to receive this initial water delivery to help prepare for the upcoming wildfire season. “As the country faces more natural disasters, like wildfires, preparation plays a major role in ensuring fire departments across the country have the resources they need to protect ! their friends and neighbors,” said Adam Warrington, Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility at AnheuserBusch. “In the same way we have utilized our production strengths to can water throughout the year to support our communities at a moment’s notice, these water donations – in advance of wildfire season – will provide critical hydration to help our nation’s volunteer firefighters stand ready for our communities in times of need.” The program will also implement a rapid-response approach to support volunteer departments nationwide actively fighting wildfires throughout the year. Starting in June, volunteer fire departments across the U.S. will be able to request Anheuser-Busch emergency drinking water through the NVFC for their immediate or upcoming wildfire response needs. Additional information will be available at www.nvfc. org/water. Through their local wholesaler partners, and in connection with the NVFC, Anheuser-Busch began delivering emergency drinking water to the following volunteer fire departments last week week: • Arizona: Pinal Rural Fire & Medical District (Mammoth, AZ) • Arizona: Hayden Volunteer Fire Department (Hayden, AZ) • California: Mi Wuk Sugar Pine Fire Protection District (Twain Harte, CA) • California: Suisun City Firefighters Association Inc. Hayden pool to remain closed for summer; revenues continue to drop By Mila Besich Copper Basin News The residents of Hayden will not be swimming at the Hayden swimming pool this summer. During the May Hayden Town Council meeting, the Council decided that they were unable to open to open the swimming pool for the summer. General Superintendent, Gary Cruz explained that with the decreased revenues the Town would need to lay off a staff member or two, in order to fund the pool operations and maintenance. The decision weighed heavy on the local council, but it

was determined that it would be best to keep the pool closed for the summer in order to maintain daily town operations. These budget concerns come after projected revenue have come in much less than were originally anticipated. The Town has transferred $500,000 from the Town savings account to cover the budget loss, just to stay in the black. Town Accountant (Contractor) Teresa Williams explained in an interview that the Town has $1.4 million dollars in its savings, however if the spending continues at the same rate, those funds will only last about 14 months. The shortfall is

due to a decrease in sales tax revenue and a reduction in the total property tax valuation. Mayor Dean Hetrick explained that everyone on the Council is working to come up with solutions to solve the budget crisis. The Council is expected to make more decisions on how to balance the 2019-20 budget and make additional decisions on where cut costs at their meeting scheduled for June 11. “Each member of our Council is working hard for the Town and our citizens to come up with the best solutions to overcome this,” he said.

Over the past five years, sales tax and property tax revenue have continued to decline for the Town of Hayden. To date, the total revenues have dropped by half the amount they were in 2014. Sales tax amounts paid by each individual business are not allowed to be disclosed as per state law. Hayden does collect a three percent sales tax on items bought and sold within the Town’s boundaries, but there are not many businesses within the Town limits. The total property valuation for the Town of Hayden is expected to decline from $7.5 million to $7.2 million, a $300,000 decrease in the 2019-20 budget.

For more information visit ADEQ’s Source Water Assessment and Protection Unit website at: www.azdeq.gov/environ/water/dw/swap.html. The USEPA and ADEQ require Arizona Water Company to provide the following information: Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some constituents. The presence of constituents does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about constituents and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the USEPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791). Some people may be more vulnerable to constituents in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. USEPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial constituents are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791). The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radiological material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity. Constituents that may be present in source water include: • Microbials, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife. • Inorganics, such as salts and metals, which can be naturally-occurring or result from urban stormwater runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming. • Pesticides and herbicides, which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses. • Organics, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are byproducts of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can also come from gas stations, urban stormwater runoff, and septic systems. • Radiological material, which can be naturally-occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities.

In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, USEPA prescribes regulations which limit the amount of certain constituents in water provided by public water systems. FDA regulations establish limits for constituents in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health.

If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. Arizona Water Company is responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the USEPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/lead.

Prescribed fire planned for Aravaipa Canyon area the week of June 3; project will improve grasslands on the south rim

The Aravaipa Canyon and Creek. John Byerly | Pinal Nugget

SAFFORD, Ariz. – The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Safford Field Office and Gila District Fire Management Office will conduct a multiple day prescribed burn in the Aravaipa Canyon area, pending appropriate weather and seasonal conditions, within the week of June 3, 2019. The South Rim Burn will cover approximately 15,726 acres of BLM and private land in the Aravaipa Canyon Ecosystem Management Area located 50 miles west of Safford. Most of the prescribed area lies within Pinal County. Prescribed fires are intended to mimic natural

fire frequency and intensity. They improve the health of the land by stimulating growth of desirable grasses, reducing invasive plants and managing fuel loads so that natural fires are less destructive. Large prescribed burns have been conducted in the Aravaipa Canyon Ecosystem Management Area since 1998. The burn is being coordinated with the Arizona Game and Fish Department and The Nature Conservancy Aravaipa Canyon Preserve. The Aravaipa Canyon Ecosystem Management Area contains 69,000 acres of desert grasslands and permanently flowing waterways under the stewardship of the BLM and The Nature Conservancy. The organizations work

together to conserve and enhance the ecosystems in the area while providing recreation opportunities such as hunting, hiking and horseback riding. The area is located in Pinal and Graham counties. “The Aravaipa Canyon has some impressive natural values, and these fire treatments are part of a long-term combined effort to conserve the area,” said Safford Field Office Manager Scott Cooke. Aravaipa Canyon area roads listed below will be closed from 6 p.m. the day before each burn to 6 a.m. the day after each burn is completed. Specific road closures: • Turkey Creek from the confluence of Aravaipa Canyon to the conjunction with the Rug Road.

• Rug Road from the conjunction with Turkey Creek to the conjunction with Dry Camp Canyon. Fire crews will monitor the burned area during and after all prescribed burns. Prescribed burn information will be available the day of the burn at the Safford Field Office. The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land located primarily in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. Diverse activities authorized on these lands generated $96 billion in sales of goods and services throughout the American economy in fiscal year 2017. These activities supported more than 468,000 jobs.
