Superior will soon have a farmers market at the food court As part of the Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition’s Food Hub project, a seasonal, locally-focused Farmer’s Market will be launched on June 14th at Superior’s newly-renovated Food Court! This season’s Market will be held on the 2nd and 4th Fridays, June through September, 4-8 p.m.. The Food Hub was created via a grant from the USDA for local Copper Corridor independent farmers and food producers to create marketplaces and opportunities for selling their wares and to educate about healthy food.

All local independent farmers, home gardeners, and food producers are invited and encouraged to become a vendor in this Superior marketplace as well as the Farmers Market in Dudleyville (1st and 3rd Fridays, 9-noon). This retail venue is the perfect revenue generator for small-scale farmers, growers and food producers. If needed, our local Food Hub team can assist you in getting your goods ready for market. The Superior Community Kitchen (SCK) at the Senior Center can be rented as a certified commercial kitchen to prepare items such as jams, jellies, salsas, tamales, and other prepared foods. A SCK handbook with use guidelines is available at Town Hall. Come join us as part of the Superior Desert Foods Collective to help the Food Hub set roots in our

Former Superior resident Anica Janea Monarez, daughter of Angela and Ruben Fernandez, graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Arts in Fashion with a Concentration in Marketing from Arizona State University (ASU) in a commencement ceremony held on Monday, May 6. While at ASU Anica participated in an internship for Caroline Cecil Textiles in Phoenix, volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Scottsdale, and is Sales Supervisor for Joie (a high end modern contemporary women’s boutique in Scottsdale) for three years. After graduation, Anica plans to work in Washington, DC in the field of Visual Merchandising and Brand Development. Angela Fernandez, her very proud mother, said, “Congratulations on your hard work and determination! Your family and friends all wish you great success in your future!”

Teens and Drunk Driving
I
t’s officially spring and with spring comes warmer weather, singing birds, sunny days, blooming flowers, backyard BBQ’s and parties, parties, parties! While most people enjoy a good party, springtime brings parties that are especially fun for new high school and college graduates. In most states when someone becomes 18 years of age, they are legally an adult. But ask any teenager and they will tell you that the move that completes the transition from childhood to adulthood doesn’t happen until the day they graduate high school. Yup! They are 18 years old and an honest to goodness adult! Whatever path a teen sets for their life, going onto college, heading out into the workforce, entering the military or just hanging around the house doing nothing, the choice is theirs! Speaking of choices, one of the BIGGEST choices a teen will make is whether or not to get behind the wheel of a vehicle and drive, especially after they have been drinking. And make no mistake it is a choice you make! In Arizona, as in most states, the level of blood alcohol that defines you as being drunk is 0.08%. Just because most states say that your blood alcohol level needs to be 0.08% or higher to be considered legally drunk, any percentage of alcohol in your bloodstream will alter your ability to drive safely. In Arizona, the term “driving under the influence” (DUI) is used not DWI which means “driving while intoxicated”. Oh, and did you know you can be considered DUI from other things like the effects of prescription medication, illegal drugs, etc.? So, DUI doesn’t just mean you are under the influence of alcohol. Are you aware that Arizona also has a “not-a-drop” law that makes it illegal for motorists who are under the age of 21 years to drive with any detectable amount of alcohol in their system. This is commonly referred to as a “baby DUI.” According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control) in 2016, 2,433 teens in the United States ages 16–19 were killed and 292,742 were treated in emergency departments for injuries suffered in motor
vehicle crashes. That means that six teens ages 16–19 died every day due to motor vehicle crashes and hundreds more were injured. Many people mistakenly think that drunk driving only applies to them only if they are the driver of a vehicle who is under the influence of alcohol or some sort of drug. No, it doesn’t! You may be completely sober, driving down the road minding your own business and be involved in a crash with another vehicle that is driven by a drunk driver! So, what can you, as a teen do to make smart choices regarding drunk driving? Here are a few tips: • Choose to never drink and drive. • Refuse to ride in a car with a teen driver who has been drinking. • Follow “rules of the road” in your parentteen driving agreement. • ALWAYS wear a seat belt on every trip, no matter how short a trip is. • Obey speed limits. • Never use a cell phone or text while driving. What can parents do to help their teen make smart, educated choices? Here are a few great tips for you: • Understand that most teens who drink do so to get drunk. • Recognize the dangers of teen drinking and driving and that teen drivers are at much greater risk of crashing after drinking alcohol than adult drivers. • Provide teens with a safe way to get home (such as picking them up or paying for a cab) if their driver has been drinking. • Model safe driving behavior. • Consider tools like parent-teen driving agreements to set and enforce the “rules of the road” for new drivers. Safe driving habits for teens include the following: o Never drink and drive o Always wear a seat belt on every trip o Limit nighttime driving o Set a limit on the number of teen passengers o Never use a cell phone or text while driving
o Obey speed limits Rules that apply to your teen MUST also apply to you when you are driving. It is vital that you model the behind-the-wheel driving behavior you want your teen to follow. Another great thing to have between you and your teen is a ParentTeen Driving Agreement. Meet the 2019 SHS Valedictorian and Salutatorian: Augie Lou Hing & Marissa Estatico Superior High School has announced its 2019 Valedictorian and Salutatorians for the 2019 Commencement, which is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. on May 24, 2019 at the Superior Memorial Football Field. These two young ladies have bright futures ahead and both have enjoyed growing up in Superior. They shared significant memories of their high schools years that shaped and motivated them. For Augie, it was participating in the FCCLA program, and earning the chance to represent Superior and the State of Arizona at the national competitions. For Marisa, she playing sports and winning a state championship in softball gave her an experience that motivated her and encouraged her to work hard. As the final days of high school come to a close for them, they shared some of the things that they will miss from these first few years. “I am going to miss seeing everyone, everyday” explained Augie. For Marisa, “I am going to miss all the fun activities like pep assemblies, the boys clapping during lunch for no reason.” Both shared how close their class is and how they will be missing that camaraderie but they are looking forward to the fact that many from their cohort will be attending Arizona State University. “I am hoping that we can all keep supporting and encouraging each other a long the way,” explained Augie. Augie plans to attend ASU, where she will study to become a teacher, with a focus on becoming a high school family and consumer science teacher. “I want to return to Superior and be a teacher,” she explained. Marisa will be attending ASU and is
planning to study engineering. She has not decided on a focus of engineering but she is considering civil engineering, aerospace engineering, biomedical engineering or electrical engineering. Her passion for engineering started after being able to participate in an engineering program for minority students at ASU when she was an underclassman. “That program is where I learned more about engineering and how it all works,” she said. Their advice for their peers that are underclassmen? “Don’t give up,” they both stated, almost in unison. They both shared how getting involved in sports and in school and community activities were important to making friends and memories but also those programs taught them different skills. “You will want to stop, you will want to quit, but don’t,” said Marisa, adding, “you just have to keep working on things.” Both shared how growing up in Superior has been good and that they hope the community never loses its focus for supporting the youth. “We have a community that really supports us,” said Augie, “ I hope that never changes.” “Everywhere we go, in sports or school activities, there are always people from Superior supporting us,” said Marisa. Both shared that they felt attending a small school did not limit their opportunities and the support from community helped all along the way of their education. Augie is the daughter of Michael Hing and August Fay, and she has two brothers and a sister. Marisa is the daughter of Stephen and Sonia Estatico; she has two younger sisters.

Area high schools set commencement for May 23, 24 Copper Corridor high schools will celebrate commencement this week. San Manuel High School will host the 64th annual commencement on Thursday, May 23, on Littau Field. The Valedictory address will be delivered by Darien Apuron. Taya Dockum will deliver the Salutatory address. The San Manuel High School class of 2019 has 51 members.
Hayden High School Commencement will be held Friday, May 24, at Lalo Serrano Memorial Field in Winkelman. The Valedictorians are Angelita Casillas, Robert Casillas and Kayla Islava and the Salutatorian is Ariana Allen. The four will speak during the ceremony. The Hayden High School Class of 2019 has 15 members. Ray High School’s Commencement
will also be held Friday, May 24, at the Ray School District Auditorium. Commencement speakers include: Valedictorians Amee Kenyon, Tara Lorona, Jaden Pace and Hailey Rutter and Salutatorian Stone Patterson. The Ray High School Class of 2019 has 33 members. Superior High School commencement is set for Friday, May 24, on Memorial
Field. The Valedictory address will be delivered by Augustine-Lou Hing. Marissa Estatico will deliver the Salutatory address. The Superior High School Class of 2019 has 33 members. All four ceremonies will begin at 7 p.m. Congratulations to all the graduates. Best of luck to all of you as you begin the next journey in your lives.

Award winners announced at Superior Sr. High Sports Banquet By Andrew Luberda Superior Sun Superior High School Principal and Athletic Director William Duarte emceed the annual Sports Awards Banquet, which took place on Wednesday, May 15, at the school. Several of the Panthers athletic programs have achieved highest level of success, especially in recent years thanks, in part, to talented classes that have gone through the school. This year no exception. “It’s a dream I’ve had for a long time,” Duarte said about the dual success of
the school’s student-athletes. “It starts at the junior high and we want to build successful programs.” “Winning isn’t everything,” he continued. “The biggest thing I can say about these kids is their hard work. The rewards for that work are coming to fruition and that’s my happiest time.” Seniors Augie-Lou Hing, Korrina Romero, Jesus Castellanos, and junior Sammy Lopez were the recipients of the top awards at the event. All four are multisport student-athletes. Hing, the Female Co-Athlete of the Year, who was named Co-Best Offensive Player
for the Superior volleyball team and MVP of the girls’ basketball team, played three sports as a senior, including tennis. She also played softball as a freshman. Her post-graduation plans include attending Arizona State University to study “Human Development and Family Studies with a minor in Secondary Education and possibly Pre-law or Pre-med.” While Hing hasn’t completely committed to a long-term career choice, her immediate plans are clear. “I want to be a high school teacher in Superior and give back by coaching sports and building leadership opportunities
through clubs,” she said. She counts receiving an award named after a former teammate as her most memorable athletic achievement at Superior. “Being named a Rose Award recipient,” Hing answered. “Julissa embodied every trait an athlete should have, and for my basketball teammates to recognize me is an honor. She was my driving force. Every game was dedicated to our sixth man and now that I have to say goodbye, I know generations to follow will continue to play for her and play like her.” Continued on page 10

How has participating in athletics better prepared Hing for the next chapter of her life and beyond? “The ability to step on the court and play with heart, determination, and dedication has really shaped who I am,” she responded. “With that said, without the support and encouragement from family, friends, coaches, and teammates I would
not be the person I am. Playing sports as a Panther gives you power to know you can tackle anything. “Sports and schoolwork go hand in hand, and I think it’s important for every student athlete to achieve and break expectations. If you have a dream to play in college it takes focus, but I know Superior will help with reaching (any) goal.”

His post-graduation plans include attending Mesa Community College, where he’ll study Criminal Justice. The increasing success of the teams in and around the Copper Corrido area has resulted in more recognition for local players. How has participating in athletics better prepared Hing for the next chapter of his life and beyond? “It taught me how to work as a team and to have my brothers’ backs no matter what happens, and it taught me how to push myself beyond limits,” he answered. Sammy Lopez, a three-sport athlete – basketball, football and baseball – as a junior was the recipient of the Manny Ruiz Award, which is given each year to the student-athlete who displays good citizenship, excels academically, exhibits grit, and performs well on the court or on the field. “It’s a pleasure to win the Manny Ruiz Award
because it shows the hard work that I put in,” Lopez said. With one year left at Superior, Lopez is looking forward to a final year of participating in athletics. “I’m looking forward to playing sports and making more memories with my teammates, aka brothers, and most importantly graduating,” he said. Lopez is one of several Panthers that has won multiple state championships at the school. Clearly, those are his most memorable athletic achievements. “Winning a state championship for baseball my freshman year and also winning a state championship for football my junior year,” he said.
