Vehicle fire sends one to the hospital A vehicle fire on Saturday has sent one San Manuel man to the Maricopa Medical Center with burns to his face and arms. According to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Lt. Tamatha Villar, Deputy Douglas Peoble was dispatched to a vehicle fire on Seventh Avenue and McNab Parkway in San Manuel on Saturday, April 2, at a little past 11 a.m.

Peoble said he observed a 25-30 foot motorhome fully engulfed in flames. The motorhome’s driver told the deputy that he had been driving the vehicle and that it began to sputter and run rough. The vehicle, he said, stalled in the road and when he removed the engine inspection cover, flames shot upward into the vehicle burning him on his face and the right side of his head and arms.

The driver was taken by helicopter to Maricopa Medical Center. San Manuel Fire Department was also dispatched to the scene and extinguished the vehicle fire and a small grass fire that had sparked in the backyard of a residence on the northwest corner of McNab and Seventh Avenue. Mammoth Towing towed the remains of the vehicle and cleared the road debris.

New career training options for San Manuel High School students on the agenda By Lana Jones The Pima County Joint Technical Education District (JTED) Board voted 5-0 at their February meeting to let the Mammoth-San Manuel Unified School District join the JTED. Now it’ll be up to the M-SM Board to decide whether to send the question to district voters. The Board will consider the issue at their next regular meeting on April 12. John Ryan, San Manuel Jr./Sr. High principal, said that joining the JTED would give MSM kids access to technical programs that the district couldn’t possibly offer because of costs, instructors, or facilities. Pima County JTED offers more than a dozen programs, including certified nursing assistant, construction, cosmetology, fire services, and graphic design. “We can send our kids down there. It gives them an opportunity to get those things,

we can’t possibly have one of each of those kinds of teachers,” Ryan said. If the M-SM Board approves it, the decision to join the JTED will go to district voters this November. Voters would decide whether to increase property taxes by $5 per $100,000 in secondary assessed value to join the JTED. Tina Norton, Pima County JTED business manager, said that district-wide property taxes would increase by less than $10,000. If M-SM joined the JTED, the state would increase the JTED’s funding by an estimated $140,000. The JTED would then send a percentage of that money back to the district to enhance career and technical education. The exact amount would depend upon an agreement between M-SM and the JTED. Norton said that the district

would definitely get more than the $10,000 increase in taxes and could get as much as $90,000. The money kept by the JTED is used to create central campus programs and for things like teacher professional development. Ryan said that joining the JTED was the only way to offer this kind and variety of technical classes to district students. “Those instructors are all specialists. We don’t have enough kids to offer five days to pay an instructor. We don’t have the facilities to do it,” Ryan said. “Plus the kids have a variety. It’s okay to offer a couple but what about the kids the want animal husbandry? Every kid’s got a different desire in life.” If voters decide to join the JTED, district students would start taking classes there in the 2012-13 school year.

Letter to the Editor: Lives disrupted after false accusation Editor, San Manuel Miner: I would like for the enclosed document to be published on the editorial page of the Miner. All the facts outlined within are accurate and can be verified. The facts will substantiate that a miscarriage of justice is occurring, right now. A malicious prosecution in in progress, at the present time. These events demonstrate how easily a person can be falsely accused of a crime; how a reputation can be damaged, possibly irreversibly. According to the official report, the Circle-K is the victim, but, the true victims are the falsely accused and his family. My son has never committed a crime, certainly not this one. Recently my son was charged with a crime in Oracle. It made no difference that he was 240 miles away in another county, when the crime occurred. The sequence of events in the last several weeks has followed a script worthy of ‘The Keystone Kops’ , or, a Leslie Nielsen movie, but, it is real life, in Pinal County, where justice is not something aspired to, but, just a word on the courthouse facade. First, a Circle-K clerk identified him only by the clothes he was wearing. She has no idea who the real criminals are (she said there were two) Her company didn’t decide to prosecute until 3 weeks after the crime. Then, she had to find a suspect whose clothes matched her earlier description. She found the first “green hoodie” that walked through the door, and, proclaimed that the person inside the hoodie was a criminal. This was complicated by

a thoroughly incompetent investigation by Deputy Zovko, of the Pinal County Sheriff’s Department, who allowed witnesses to leave without even determining who they were, or, the description of the suspects they had observed; he failed to observe the surveillance tape; and, he wrote an official report, identifying suspects only by the clothes they were wearing: no description of height, weight, ethnicity, hair and eye color, or, even the sex of the suspects. Just “ a green hoodie”, and, a “dark hoodie”. I guess you don’t need any more than that to disrupt an innocent person’s life. A summons was, later, issued for the crime on this report, and, this lack of evidence that constitutes an official investigation by the Pinal County Sheriff’s Department. My son, who is without a doubt the only person in Pinal County who owns a green hoodie, was officially charged with the crime. Then, there was the refusal by the arrogant County Attorney to even examine the only real evidence that was offered to him. The evidence would have verified that my son was more than 200 miles away when the crime occurred. He was out of Pinal County, continuously, from February 3 to late on February 7, 2011. The alleged crime occurred a few minutes after midnight on the 6th. Lawrence Wharton certainly didn’t want the facts proving someone’s innocence to interfere with his single-minded and determined prosecution. My son met with him, bearing bank records, as well as towing and

repair receipts, for a disabled vehicle that had him stranded in Yavapai County for five days; motel receipts; and, a list of a dozen or more witnesses who could place him in Yavapai County during the time of the commission of the alleged crime. Mr. Wharton’s response was that he had an eye witness, and, that was all he needed to convict my son of the crime. He has never learned that eye witness testimony is the least reliable of all? I proudly served as a Police Officer and Deputy Sheriff in another state, in another time, when law enforcement was sworn to ‘protect and serve.’ We did not choose whom to protect, whom to serve, nor whom to falsely accuse of a crime. Our oaths were not taken lightly. If I had turned in such a report, my sergeant would have sent me back to the beginning, to conduct a real investigation. Sgt. Vargas embraced this report, without question. A prosecutor, in that time, would have laughed at such a report, and, probably would have had me reprimanded. Prosecutor Wharton blindly plunged ahead, in an effort to get someone, anyone, convicted. My Sheriff would have sent me home to contemplate the reason that I had become a law enforcement officer in the first place. If Sheriff Babeu asks only such mediocrity from his deputies, hen, certainly, we can never expect more than mediocre justice – and, mediocre justice is no justice at all. There were bumper stickers, in my era, that read ‘If you don’t like Cops, Next time you’re in Trouble Call a Hippie.” If I ever need assistance,

I hope there is a hippie left in Pinal County. I had confidence, at first, that the charges would be dropped, or, that if it went to trial, that my son would be acquitted. I no longer harbor such optimism in this ‘Bizarro World’ of Pinal County “justice”. When a person who was 240 miles away can even be charged, much less convicted of a crime, then, reality has become fantasy; truth, mendacity. If he is acquitted, only because he can prove his innocence, what would happen had he not been 240 miles away? Would he be convicted with zero evidence? What if the crime was a felony: would he be sent to prison? What will happen to you, in similar circumstance? Will you be able to prove your innocence? Oh, and as to the “heinous” crime that was committed, which disrupted the lives of our entire family, the full consequences which are yet to be determined? It was beer theft! It truly is surreal, when innocent lives can be destroyed over a couple of sixpacks! /s/ David Miller Oracle Editor’s note: Because of the nature of the concerns raised by Mr. Miller, the San Manuel Miner contacted the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office and Pinal County Attorney’s Office and asked them to comment. The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office made this statement: “As a result of your forwarding this letter to the Sheriff’s Office, a Command Staff inquiry has been started in an effort to properly

Editor, San Manuel Miner: This is written in response to the letter from David Hankins published on March 30 in the San Manuel Miner. I can appreciate your questions and in order to offer detailed answers to those questions and those of any others that may have concerns or are just curious, our Superintendent Dr. Rickel has tentatively scheduled a public forum on the solar project for Wednesday, April 27. Representatives from Tioga will be there to answer questions that you or anyone else in the community might have. Please keep in mind that this is a tentative date, so be sure to check our web site as the date approaches, in the event it is rescheduled. I’d like to clarify a few misstatements in your note to me and in your article that appeared in the San Manuel Miner. The MSMSD does have options to buy the system at seven years (and at least two other intervals), but your phraseology of “pay for the system again” is not accurate. Tioga is fronting 100 percent of the cost of all equipment, installation, maintenance, and insurance of the system as long as they are the owners of it. The only obligation the district has is 1) to buy the electricity that is produced from the system at a rate that is less than we are currently paying the utility that supplies our electrical power and 2) to provide suitable sites for placing the equipment (which will also give the district an additional benefit of covered parking at no additional cost). Other than acknowledging that the district will use at least as much electrical power as this system will generate and I suppose obligating the district to pay for that electricity at a rate less than we are currently paying, there is nothing “speculative” about this action at all. Also your mischaracterization that the board thought that this was an “imperative issue that needed to be pushed through without public discussion,” needs to be addressed. I can recall that this topic was discussed at public board meetings at least twice in the previous nine months prior to us taking any action on it, again in a public board meeting. On both previous occasions, a unanimous board directed the Superintendent to look into the cost saving possibilities of this kind of arrangement. When we heard the last presentation, we acted on it in the belief that it would save the district money. I certainly would not classify or characterize that action as an “audacious act towards the residents in the community.” Thank you for being concerned about how our tax dollars are spent. I do agree with your sentiment that this could be a waste of taxpayers money, but if so, it is the federal taxpayer whose money may be being wasted, not that of the local school district’s taxpayer. Or perhaps the rate payers of the Arizona Public Service (APS)

utility are paying too much overall for their electricity because of these types of programs. Certainly this is a valid concern to bring to your elected Federal Representatives or members of the Arizona Corporation Commission but this school board of which I am an elected member, merely took advantage of a good deal. So please don’t crucify us for taking advantage of a good deal. I am not an expert on those policies, but the Federal government has offered tax breaks and incentives to make such programs possible and economically feasible to the end user (in this case our school district) in their effort to promote “Green and Renewable Energy.” Also, I believe that our own Arizona Corporation Commission has also mandated our utility companies operating within Arizona to provide a certain percent of their energy through renewable energy sources

and that forces our provider, Arizona Public Services in this case, to create programs such as the one you are concerned with. Personally I believe that these types of programs are pure folly and are as misguided as the current incentives available for Electric Hybrid and Electric cars, or past programs such as propane conversions of trucks. But rest assured our district is the beneficiary of the program you question. The APS rate payer and/or the federal taxpayer are the people who should be concerned with this program. I do think that if our local taxpayers/ school district can save money by taking advantage of the various subsidies being offered, we ought to because it leaves more of the district’s taxpayer money to be spent elsewhere in the district. Even if it means that an outside company such as Tioga also benefits from the arrangement as the intermediary

and the provider of the expertise to arrange such supplier arrangements. I do know that our Superintendent, Business Manager, Facilities Manager, and others within the school system who are good with numbers, formed a committee to hear proposals from four or five competitors to offer this type of power system/purchase agreement to the district. They recommended the one from Tioga and the board members voted to authorize the Superintendent to proceed. I trust committee to make very informed and reasoned decisions and act in the best interest of the district. And I believe they did in this case as well as many other instances. Sincerely, /s/ Mark Phelps

identify and address any areas of concern regarding this investigation. I cannot comment, nor speak on behalf of the Pinal County Attorney’s Office. Prior to your inquiry, the Sheriff’s Office was not made aware of the evidence allegedly produced providing an alibi for the suspect in this case. “Unfortunately, to our knowledge, Mr. Miller has not contacted the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office to file a formal

complaint nor to discuss his concerns with the Regional Commander. It is the well established policy of the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Babeu to run a transparent and professional organization. It is the policy of this administration to ensure accountability and to address any issues brought to the attention of this office.” The Pinal County Attorney’s Office declined to comment on the case.

Two arrests made in March theft of motorcycle Pinal County Sheriff’s deputies have made two arrests in connection with the theft of a motorcycle (dirt bike) from the motorcycle races held earlier in March. According to PCSO’s Public Information Officer Tim Gaffney, the theft of the bike was reported on March 12 at approximately 1:30 p.m. from the racetrack behind Gardner Middle School, San Manuel. When the deputy arrived on scene, he was told that the motorcycle was recovered in the 600 block of San Carlos, San Manuel. A friend of the bike’s owner

had driven around town looking for the bike and had located a motorcycle matching the description inside the fenced yard. The friend went to the address and asked the occupants if he could see the bike. He told the residents that the bike belonged to his friend and the residents told him to take the motorcycle with him. The deputy investigating the theft went to the address where the bike was recovered and spoke to two juveniles at the residence. Located in the trash can in the yard were the license plate and several stickers from the

By Frank Smith Several local fighters took part in the Mixed Martial Arts event that was held at the San Manuel High School auditorium on Saturday, April 2. This was the second event that was held at the auditorium in conjunction with Mammoth-San Manuel Community Schools. In the first bout, locals Jonathon Sanchez (Mammoth) and Chris Romiti gave the crowd a good showing as the fight went back and forth with each fighter countering each others moves as Sanchez favored the stand up and Romiti favored the ground game. After three rounds of action it came down

to the judges, with Sanchez picking up the unanimous decision for the win. In the next match-up local Ramon ‘Monchi’ Salazar (Mammoth) squared off against Chris Simms in a fight full of take downs and devastating strikes. Salazar pulled out the win with 1:50 in the third round by submission as he applied the rear naked choke to his opponent forcing the elusive Tap Out. Salazar also wanted to mention this win was for his students as he is a local elementary school teacher. Pablo Robles (Mammoth) took center stage to face off against Eddie Orozco. Robles passed Orozcos’

Lil Miners take to the mat The Lil Miners are back in action, pinning opponents and winning matches all across the great state of Arizona.

The Lil Miners kicked off the season with a tournament at Tucson High. Results from that meet are:

guard several times throughout the match to take full mount landing several strikes with the ground and pound technique. After three rounds of action, the card went to the judges in a unanimous decision for Robles for the win. The Main Event and the final fight of the night, featured a local favorite Roman ‘El Gallito’ Salazar (Mammoth) taking on the pride of Eloy Ramon Aleman. All the hype leading up to the fight was everything it was billed up to be. As many fans made the trip from Eloy to support their fighter and many of the locals going for their prized fighter made for an intense introduction as both groups lead chants in favor of their fighter. When the bell rang, it would only take Salazar :20 into the first round to take down his counter part as El Gallito landed a right cross to the chin of Aleman dropping him in the middle of the cage for the K.O win. The punch set off an eruption of celebration throughout the auditorium in favor of Salazar. In other action in the MMA event, Nick Ackis submitted Shane Badia with an arm bar 2:37 of the first round; Josh Medina submitted Carlos Castillo :58 in

the second round with the triangle choke; Drakkar Klose earned the unanimous decision over Sheldon Patnett in three rounds; Art Tellez submitted Raymond Williams with the triangle choke 2:54 in the first round; Peter De La Cruz submitted Kyle Duthie 1:52 in the second round with the rear naked choke; Raymond Pina went the distance for a unanimous decision over Joel Champion; and Andrew Perez got the unanimous decision over Jeff Horlacher in three rounds. Editor’s note: … and a good time was had by all. jrc

Results posted for Knights of Columbus golf tourney In a golf tournament defined by close competition, two teams tied for first with a third team only two strokes behind, while a $10,000 hole in one shot landed within 14 inches of paying off at the Knights of Columbus’ charity golf tournament Saturday, at SaddleBrooke Ranch West golf course. The tournament benefits scholarships to local high school seniors. Local Junior-Senior High School principal, John Ryan’s team reprised their top performance, sharing a score of 56 (16 under par) with the team of Dave Doucette, Bailey Wherry, Mario Maldonado and Bill Linderman. Ryan’s team included John Tesanovich, Jeff Hart and Jim Dennis. Only two strokes behind the leaders, the family team of Steve and Paul Taylor and Becky and Bruce Decker posted a 58. Jerry Foley, who read about the tournament in The Nugget just days before, landed within 14 inches of claiming the $10,000 Hole in One prize sponsored by Ralph Pisano Insurance. “That hole was about 194 yards with a slight crosswind,” Pisano said. In the tournament’s trademark “surprise prize” the team of Eddie Popovitch, Curt Holmes, Scott Gramos and Steve Mariette won a round of golf for four at their choice of four

premier courses in the Robles communities for scoring in the middle of all teams. “This time, mediocrity paid off,” one said. “I know when I play in a tournament, I’m never going to score one of the top two or three prizes, so we like to give every team a chance to win a great prize,” said tournament director John Wahlmeier. The tournament was a strong mixture of local, Copper Basin, and Tucson teams, according to Wahlmeier. “We were very pleased to have more than 90 players from locally as well as from Globe and Raytheon. Raytheon employees made up at least seven of our teams,” Wahlmeier said. “Thanks to Jerry Bribiescas for the many Raytheon teams as well as Raytheon volunteers,” he added. “We’d like to get as many teams from Honeywell,” said Wahlmeier’s secretary. Raffle prizes, including rounds of golf at some of the most elite courses in southern Arizona, overnight stays at Apache Gold, Desert Diamond and Laughlin, Nevada casinos, as well as local restaurants and other businesses mounted to more than $5,000 worth of raffle prizes according to Wahlmeier. The Knights of Columbus annual charity golf tournament is held the first Saturday each April.

Kelly and Marquez continue to do a great job on the mound. We will be tested when Ray comes to town undefeated so it should be a good challenge for us.” The Miners faced Ray on Monday winning 2 – 1 in a close game. San Manuel will host Globe today at 4 p.m.

By John Hernandez The Lady Cougars softball

team was brought down to reality a few weeks ago, losing

to the San Manuel Miners by the 10-run mercy rule.

The girls of Oracle played their worst game of the season

against a very good San Manuel team. This was the first loss for the Lady Cougars but they bounced back last week with a 14 to 11 victory over Miami. Angela Navarro scored four runs and Heather Knight scored three times for Mt. Vista. The girls are still in the hunt for a play off spot with a 4 and 1 record. San Manuel

looks like the team to beat in the league. The Mountain Vista boy’s baseball team is still looking for their first win as they lost to San Manuel by the mercy rule and were routed by Miami 18 to 2. This year’s team is inexperienced and it shows in their play. Their record is 0 and 4 with one tie. They travel this week to play against Globe.

Lady Miners

Continued from Page 8 base; Clark went 3 for 4 with three singles, and one RBI; Castro went 2 for 3, with a single, a double, and two RBIs; Medina went 1 for 2 with a homerun (grand slam), two stolen bases, and four RBIs; Valdez went 2 for 2 with singles, a stolen base, and one RBI; Vargas went 1 for 4 with a single; DeChamp went 1 for 3 with a single, Estrada went 1 for 4 with a triple, and one RBI; and Castaneda went 2 for 3 with two singles. In the re-match with the Lady Bulldogs in game six of the tournament, San Manuel seemed to have a some swagger-feeling that maybe the outcome would be different than the 13 – 3 loss they were handed the day before. The game started out rough for the Lady Miners as error after error and run after run were in favor of Douglas as they scored the first six runs to take a 6 – 0 lead. The ladies abruptly re-grouped with fire in their eyes, came out swinging in the next few inning tying the up the score then taking the lead and never looked back on their way to a 13 – 7 celebrated win. In the circle for the ladies was Clark with Castro catching. Clark picked up the win, facing 29 batters, with one strikeout, three walks, and five hits. Clarks’ ability to step in and take over the pitching duties was the saving grace for the Lady Miners. Offensively, LeGrand went 2 for 4 with a single, a double, and three RBIs; Clark went 1 for 3 with a single; Castro went 3 for 4 singles, and two RBIs; Medina went 3 for 4 with a double, a triple, a homerun, and four RBIs; DeChamp went 1 for 3 with a single; and Castaneda went 2 for 3 with a double, a triple, and two RBIs. With the win, the Lady Miners claimed redemption along with a meeting against the Globe Lady Tigers in the seventh game of the tournament for the ladies and the fourth of the day. San Manuel wasted no time with Globe as the Lady Miners enforced the rarely used tournament rule ‘when an opponent is up 15 – 0 at after the third inning of play - the game will be called’. San Manuel sent Globe home early with a 15 – 0 loss in three innings. The quick game would help give the ladies a much needed rest after playing their fifth game of the day and the eighth of the tournament, not to mention the fact of facing defending Hayden Tournament Champions in the Safford Lady Bulldogs in the next game for the championship. In the circle was Clark with Castro catching, Clark faced 11 batters, striking out three, walking two and allowing one hit. Offensively, LeGrand went 1 for 1 with a single, a stolen base, and two RBIs; Clark went 1 for 2 with a single, and one RBI; Castro went 2 for 2 with singles, and two RBIs; Medina went 2 for 3 with a single, a homerun, and two RBIs; Vargas went 1 for 1with a single, Sandoval 2 for 3 with singles, and one RBI; Castaneda went 2 for 2 with a single, a double, and one RBI. In the championship game against Safford, the Lady Miners were not sure what to expect since it had been some time the ladies were in that position-in the position to prove to some that the Lady Miners are a legit team and to prove to others that they belong in the same sentence with Safford and Championship game! After working their way up to the championship game through the losers bracket- having played five games in one day, many said it was impossible while other said it could happen…well it happened. The Lady Bulldogs scored two runs in the second inning to take a 2 – 0 lead, Safford feeling perhaps this was the beginning of many more runs yet to come. The Lady Miners answered back in the third inning when Castro got on base on base and Medina hit a two run shot deep in to left field to tie the game at 2 – 2, you could just hear the Safford faithful sigh in disbelief. It was at that point that the Lady Bulldogs knew the Lady Miners came not only to play but to win. Both teams continued to get runners on base but both failed to push any runs across the plate. The game continued back and forth, with plenty of tense moments. It wasn’t until the bottom half of the 7th inning when Safford got a runner on third base and brought the run home on a bunt to end the tie and the game 3 – 2, with Safford taking home the Championship. In the circle was Clark with Castro catching. Clark faced 34 batters, striking out two, allowing five walks and four hits, and one

San Manuel Miner, San Manuel, Arizona hit by pitch. Offensively, Clark went 1 for 3 with a single, and Medina went 2 for 3 with a single, a homerun, a stolen base, and two RBIs. Coach Deanne Brewer said, “I am so proud of my team! We had a rough loss early in the tournament to Douglas, which forced us to work back through the losers’ bracket. And that’s exactly what we did. We had to face Douglas again on Saturday. We had lost our starting pitcher in the Catalina game, LeGrand, when she sustained a terrible bruise right above the knee on the inside of her right leg stealing third base, causing her to be unable to pitch (push off) and we were down 7-1 in the second inning. “We had committed five errors at that point in the game. Thanks to our senior leadership (specifically Jessica Castro), who rallied the girls in the third

inning. Castaneda lead the inning with a triple, and the hits just kept coming. Douglas went through three pitchers by the end of the game. We hit them all. “When we faced Globe in the seventh game, they had only played two games to our six. When we faced Safford, they had played four games to our seven. This team does not give up easily. They fought all the way to the end. We lost to Safford in the bottom of the seventh, when they executed a picture perfect squeeze play. “We had some outstanding defensive plays as well this tournament - diving catches and all!!! We never gave up. I think we found out what our team was made of and it felt good. It was a lot of fun! “One of the things I stressed early this season is that we have to hit to win games. We are

definitely hitting. Our struggles this year have been defensively - in two positions. We just can’t seem to handle the ball at times... no matter who is in the position. Oracle Oaks Festival: wildlife photo contest to be held Spring has sprung, and summer is sauntering on in, bringing with it all the finer hunter/gatherer instincts buried deep within our nature, which can no longer be satisfied by the pursuit of the missing office stapler, but, must have an outlet. Oh, but, what to do with them? What could satisfy the natural need for hot-blooded pursuit over desert terrain, in search of sustenance? Hunt a javelina, cordon

off a cardinal, bug a beetle, but, here’s a way to make it legal: join the festival fun that is blossoming around, by submitting photos to the Oracle Wildlife Photo Contest, open to all ages, and, feed your artistic soul in the process. Print off applications from Oracletown.com, fill out, and, bring, along with up to three of your printed photos, of local wildlife, to the Oracle Community Center,

on Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Deadline for entries is April 10 at noon. Entered photos will be displayed, and, the public is invited to vote at the OCC on Oak Festival Day. Prizes will be awarded at 2 p.m., on April 16. For more information call Susie (520) 896-2935. So, what will it be? A bouncing bunny, a lithesome lizard, a querulous coyote, a scandalous skunk, or ….???

Birdspotting ... Spring is one of the best times of year to see beautiful birds. Above is a female cardinal who frequents a birdfeeder in San Manuel (Jennifer Carnes photo) and at left is a blue Heron spotted in Aravaipa (Lana Jones photo). It’s a beautiful time of year to visit Aravaipa but you have to get permits if you want to go. There are still some permits left in April. Check out https://www.blm.gov/ az/aravaipa/hikingcalendar.cfm to reserve one. (Photo at far left by Lana Jones)

San Manuel Little League seeking players, coaches Overheard in San Manuel recently, the head coach of the Little League team called a player, whose name shall remain confidential due to their age, for a meeting, to discuss a serious lack of discipline that had occurred last year, which he wished to nip in the bud, as part of the preparation for the new Little League season. “See here,” the coach remonstrated with the young player “you know the principles of good sportsmanship that the Little League practices. You also know we don’t tolerate temper tantrums, shouting at the umpire, or abusive language. Do I make myself clear?” The young player answered in the affirmative, with their head hanging low, in shame. Though, it should be noted that the coach quickly made moves

to put the player back at their ease, lest they feel like they are less of a team member than the others, who were not called in. “Now, now, “ said the coach, “It’s nothing too be too upset about, youngster. Just, kindly, explain it to your mother!” That’s right, parents: It’s that time of year, again, for when you have a choice between letting your child run wild through the streets, roaming with other children like a pack of wild animals, or, signing them up for San Manuel Little League, where they will learn discipline, manners, teamwork, and, how to run faster, so that, at least when they are running wild, they will be leading the pack. That time of year when the reader realizes that this is the newspaper closest to April 1st, so: April Fool’s.

It is true, however, that it is time to sign your child, ages 4 – 16 yrs, up for San Manuel Little League. Registrations are on-going,until April 15th. Fees are $55 for the first child, $45 for the second child, and, then, $35 for each child after the third, which fee includes hat, shirt, pants, and, socks. Volunteers are needed, so, please do ask for a volunteer form, when you come in to sign your child up. Also, if you are interested in coaching, managing, or assisting a team, there is a coach’ meeting on April 14, starting at 7 p.m., at the Gardner Learning Center library. For more information, registrations or questions, please call Stepheena Huerta at 520-591-0719, or ,385-3016; or, Frank Zazueta at 385-9569.

By John Hernandez The Mammoth-San Manuel Community Schools is looking for local bands and musicians for an “Open Mic Night” on Saturday, April 30, at the San Manuel High School auditorium. The Open Mic Night is open to bands of all ages and types of music. The only stipulation is that music lyrics and performances be clean! Pre registration and audition is required. There is a limited number of

performance time slots. Bands will be given 30 to 45 minutes of performing time depending on the number of bands that sign up. Bands could be provided more than one time slot. There is no charge for the bands that will perform. “We have a lot of local talent. I would like to give people the opportunity to see some of it,” said Larry Ramirez, Mammoth-San Manuel Community Schools Director. The doors for the show open at 4:30 p.m. with music begin-

ning at 5 p.m. Admission will be $5. If there is a decent turnout of bands and audience, it could lead to a “Battle of the Bands” competition in the near future. This is a good opportunity for bands to get some exposure and meet other musicians.
