Pinal County Attorney’s Office recognizes local police officers Police officers across the country deal with many aspects of crime. But it’s not just investigating and arresting criminals. They are often called upon to work with the victims of crimes, people who are often having the worst day of their lives. Officers have to be compassionate and caring. Rural officers even more so since they often know the victims, who may be friends or neighbors. On Tuesday, April 9, the Pinal County Attorney’s Office hosted the third annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Night and honored local law enforcement officers for their outstanding service to victims of crimes. Three officers from the Copper Corridor were among those honored. Superior Police Chief Christian Ensley was honored to present the award to Officer Tyler Hall. Officer Hall has always gone above and beyond his call of duty for the citizens of Superior. The department is proud and honored to have him a part of the Superior Police Department family.

Grand Alaskan Cruise & Tour

Kearny Police Officer Anthony Clubb was also honored. Attending with Officer Clubb were Chief of Police Wallace Kenney, Mayor Debra Sommers and Town Manager Anna Flores. Mammoth Police Department’s Sergeant Michael Green was recognized and presented the award. While not local, Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Detective Randy Snyder was recognized at the event. He does child crimes, mostly those involving online predators. Detective Snyder has been assigned to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Bureau since 2010 where he was initially detailed to the Persons Crimes Unit. In 2014, he was selected and transferred to the Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce, where he remains assigned today primarily serving child victims within Pinal County. We thank all our officers for their dedication to the community and for their continual support of victims of crimes.

Superior Firefighters battle brushfire

On Monday evening around sunset, Superior Fire Department responded to a report of a growing brushfire on US 60 at Gonzalez Pass. A noticeable column of smoke was visible leaving Superior so Queen Valley Fire was summoned to assist. SFD initially arrived in a brush truck and a tender (tanker) quickly followed by a Queen Valley brush truck. An aggressive fire attack was performed on a several hundred yard section of fire that was parallel to the

highway and showed potential to continue to grow and expand up hills and further away from the highway. The fire was fought back as an additional SFD engine and support truck arrived along with a Queen Valley tender. Both departments worked in unison to extinguish the blaze and the hotspots as DPS helped slow traffic and move motorists over a lane. The cause is still being determined with a broken hot brake pad as a possible source but human error has not

been ruled out. “All of us first responders would like to complement and thank drivers that moved over and slowed for the emergency vehicles and remind others to please change lanes or at least slow and give room (if no lanes are available to switch into),” said SFD Captain Richard Drennan. A few cars came around the curve at the top of Gonzalez Pass without slowing for the DPS trooper with one actually striking traffic cones and coming dangerously close to a fire apparatus. “Please be safe which helps keep us safe!” Drennan added.

RIO TINTO

Continued from page 3 individuals, environmental groups, nearby municipalities and local businesses. Upon this investment, project partners will have invested over $2 billion to develop and permit Resolution since 2004. This includes sinking a new shaft to mining depth, rehabilitating an existing shaft, extensive drilling and ore body testing, and the permitting and public engagement process. Rio Tinto chief executive JS Jacques said, “Resolution is one of the most significant undeveloped copper deposits in the world and this additional funding demonstrates Rio Tinto’s commitment to bring the mine into production. The comprehensive permitting process is well underway with the Environmental Impact Study on track to be completed next year according to the regulators schedule. “The rise of electric vehicles, battery storage, new transmission technology and other green energy innovations are highly copper intensive. We need to prepare now to meet this future demand. Resolution will be well positioned to provide North American manufacturers the copper that is essential to their products.”

SPORTS

Superior bats pummel NFL Yet; Duarte, Cruz with five RBIs each By Andrew Luberda Copper Area News The top-ranked Superior baseball team slugged nine extra-base hits, including five homeruns during a lopsided 25 – 1 victory last Friday against NFL Yet Academy in Phoenix. “We hit the ball very well,” Superior head coach Manuel Ortega said. “We stayed within ourselves and drove the ball all over the field. It was good to see the (players) make contact and drive the ball. It was really nice having the whole team hitting the ball and having

fun.” Sophomore Nathan Duarte and freshman Matthew Cruz led the offensive onslaught as each homered and finished with five RBIs. Duarte went 2-for-2 while Cruz was 4-for-4, which included a double in addition to his round-tripper. Daniel McConnell, Kale Major and Gabe Castillo also hit bombs in the game. Several Panthers who don’t receive as much playing time as the regulars were able to make plate appearances and they produced. Freshman Gabe Denogean went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. The same was true on the mound, as junior Julian

Navarro picked up the win in his first start of the season. He allowed only one run on one hit with three walks and nine strikeouts in the complete-game outing. Navarro’s strong performance was even more memorable considering it occurred on his birthday. “His performance was great,” Oretga said. “He hit his spots and mixed up his pitches really well. “He wanted to pitch for his birthday, so I was glad to make that happen. What makes that even greater is our (players) being excited for him and cheering him on.” Up next: Apr. 19 at Arete Prep (6 p.m.) and Apr. 23 vs. Round Valley (3:30 p.m.).
