Mobile home destroyed in Sunday fire An early fire Sunday morning has left a family homeless. The San Manuel Fire Department was called to the scene of the fire in the Rancho San Manuel Trailer Park at approximately 6 a.m. to find a double-wide mobile home about 80 percent engulfed in flames. The home was occupied at the time that the fire broke out, said SMFD Assistant Chief Jimmy Gardner. Four people were in the structure. One was sent by ambulance to University Medical Center with injuries and two others were sent by ambulance to Oro Valley Hospital as precautionary

measures. The fire is being investigated in house, Gardner said, adding that the fire was not suspicious in nature at all. Mammoth and Oracle fire departments responded to the scene to assist San Manuel. Pinal County Sheriff’s Office and Southwest Ambulance were also on hand. Gardner said he didn’t know the exact time the fire was declared out, but San Manuel firefighters were back at the station at approximately noon. A team checked on the scene throughout the day to make sure there were no flare ups.

Inaugural Todd Walk off to an incredible start By Lana Jones Over $10,000 was raised for the Todd Myers benefit scholarships this year. A handful of San Manuel High School graduates will receive $500 scholarships, thanks to the local community. Jamie Myers said that between 100 and 150 people came out to the first Todd Walk on Saturday March 5. “We are so thankful to the community because they are truly the ones that have funded the scholarship and made it possible,” she said.

Walkers contributed to the scholarship fund with registration fees and pledges. Additional money was raised through t-shirt sponsors and sales, donations, Todd’s initial $1000 donation, and anonymous matching funds. Jamie said the original goal was to give out two $500 scholarships this year. Thanks to the great response more scholarships will be awarded. A few donors went the extra mile to help the cause. Calvin Herrick walked 7.5 miles to fulfill his pledges of over $400. Emily Large donated $115 that she collected with a giftbasket raffle she holds every year. Jamie said that Larry Ramirez deserved a big thank you for helping create fliers, registration forms, and come up with ideas for Todd Walk. “Also, a huge thank you to the high school,” Jamie said, “for allowing us the use of the track!” Face painting at the walk was done by Heather Carter, Raya and Taylor Woods. Family and friends

volunteered at the walk including National Jr. Honor Society student Stephen Faulstich and eight-year old Pacey Garcia. The San Manuel volunteer EMTs were on hand too, just in case. Freeport McMoRan, Millrock, Redhawk exploring Copper Creek

By Lana Jones Exploration in and around Copper Creek is building momentum. Three companies are at varying stages of development around the historic mining district east of Mammoth. Freeport McMoRan is a new arrival, Redhawk is working on expanding its current deposits and finding new ones, and Millrock is exploring but hasn’t discovered any large deposits. Eric Kinneberg, director of external communications for Freeport McMoRan, confirmed that Freeport was active in the area. “We’re conducting some very early stage exploration work on the property,” Kinneberg said. Redhawk Resources is doing the most work in the area. They’re working on the last hole in their 2010 drilling program now. Joe Sandberg, Redhawk president, said that they brought some better drillers in to finish the drilling program. “It’s been a little slower then we wanted but we’ve been getting that issue resolved,” he said. “We’ve still got a lot of drilling left to do that we’re working on this year.” The drilling will continue

throughout the year. In addition to drilling, Redhawk is working on road building, longer-term permitting, and archeological and biological studies on the entire property. One of the permits Redhawk is pursuing is an additional

right-of-way through state land. The permit is for a new spur off the existing Copper Creek Road. Each step brings Redhawk and the Copper Creek mining district closer to being active again.

“We’re trying to push Copper Creek towards getting it in to production at some point in time, hopefully sooner rather than later,” Sandberg said. Gregory Beischer, president See Copper, Page 3

Reader concurs about bullying in Mammoth

Steve Avelar, a person with a smile that could only be matched by the warmth in his heart, passed away in his Gold Canyon home on Feb. 17, 2011. He is survived by his children; his mother, Mercy; brothers, Mark and Leonard; sisters, Vicki and Stephanie; countless nephews and nieces and many friends. Services for Mr. Avelar were held Feb. 25 at St. George’s Catholic Parish in Apache Junction. Interment was at Kearny Memorial Cemetery. His love and companionship for family and friends will dearly be missed. We love you Steve. You are in our prayers. May you rest in peace.

I have also witnessed some most distressing behavior by council members and meeting attendees alike. There does seem to be a “good ol’ boy” attitude by some city council members and their constituents as well. It’s time to step into the twenty first century of these United States of America. It was time for Mr. Ponce to retire and I’m confident that our Public Works staff is handling their duties competently as expected until a director is chosen. As for the Police Chief, I thought he would do a good job for the Town of Mammoth. In time, I hope we will be told what actually transpired to make him resign. I completely agree with Patricia about Rachelle Sanchez. Since accepting responsibilities as the interim Town Clerk after Shannon Ortiz left, then officially becoming Town Clerk, Rachelle has been dedicated to bringing positive change to our town, to make the Town of Mammoth a better place. I appreciate her service and let her know. It is reprehensible that she be disrespected, berated and second-guessed, especially in a public setting. She does her research and whenever she speaks on a topic, it is clear and concise. When she is questioned by council members, it appears to me that the individuals have not been paying attention or did not do their homework. I see this dissent as a severe resistance to change. Change and progress cannot be stopped, the only thing to do is to be involved and courteously work together in the evolutionary process of our government. Although I am a “New Comer” of only five years, I could see the beauty and potential of this area, Mammoth specifically. That

I felt it was my duty to give back to our town when I was invited to apply for a vacant seat on the Planning and Zoning commission. By serving, I get a chance to bring change and progress without sacrificing our ability to live the way we please. If any of those very vocal city council’s meetings’ audience members really want to make a difference then I challenge any one of them to apply for the P&Z commission seat that has been vacant since Larry Ramirez was elected to city council. It’s a rare occasion that we even get members of the public attending P&Z meetings if they don’t have business with the commission. Finally, Patricia was correct. Pinal County sponsors annual rabies clinic in San Manuel, Oracle Pinal County Animal Care and Control will be hosting its annual rabies clinic this weekend. Rabies vaccinations and dog licenses will be available on Saturday, March 12, from 9 a.m. – noon, at the Pinal County Complex, 190 N. Redington Rd, in San Manuel; and on Saturday, March 12, from 1 – 4 p.m., vaccinations and licenses will be available at the Oracle Justice Court, 1470 N. Justice Dr. in Oracle. Please make sure all dogs are on a leash and all cats are in a carrier. Special arrangements will be made for the veterinarian to go to the vehicle for aggressive animals. SAND says Pinal first: An idea that could help communities countywide By Lana Jones SAND, or Superstition Area Networking and Development, is the baby of economic development groups in Pinal County. They formed in 2009 but are already working on multiple projects including a business incubator, local advertising project, and all-inclusive business directory. They serve the areas of Superior, Gold Canyon, San Tan Valley, Apache Junction, Florence, Queen Valley, and Queen Creek. SAND’s two goals are to bring new businesses to their service area and to support existing businesses. Bill Grubb, SAND board member, said that the group’s main goal was to bring businesses to the community. He said that SAND’s service area has a large population of employable people who would much rather work in the community than travel to neighboring cities. “SAND is trying very hard to bring businesses to those communities,” he said, “and to help the businesses that are already there grow.” The group isn’t only about growth though. They’re working to support existing local businesses with a Pinal County First campaign. It is modeled after Local First Arizona’s “Shift Arizona” campaign. The idea is to get people to shift 10 percent of their purchases to local businesses. Grubb said that jobs, the economy, and education all benefit from increased sales at local businesses. A calculator tool on the Shift Arizona website shows how shifting 10 percent of purchases to local businesses creates benefits that are multiplied throughout the community and state. If locals shifted 10 percent of their purchases to Copper Corridor businesses, for example, those businesses would be able to hire more workers. Wealth in the Copper Corridor would increase. “We’re trying to do that in Pinal County,” said Grubb. “We have a lot of small businesses with a lot of things to offer.” SAND is also looking at a new way to promote businesses in its area: a boutique tour. For the tour, SAND would work with Coolidge to bus shoppers to local boutiques. Shoppers would pay for a spot on the bus. Then they’d get small discounts from the boutiques on the tour to make up for the bus fee. Grubb said that SAND is

Continued from Page 1 and CEO of Canadian Millrock Resources, said that Millrock was taking a pause from drilling right now. “We started a program in December,” he said. “We drilled two fairly deep holes. We’re just assessing those results and getting ready to recommence in about three weeks.” Millrock’s claims are in the Galiuros, east of the historic Copper Creek mining district. The company is accessing the remote areas of the property by helicopter. Beischer said that some interesting prospects had been found but no major deposits. The next drilling program is not finalized yet but will include at least two more holes. Millrock is also mapping geology and collecting surface samples to maximize their chances of hitting a major deposit on their next round of drilling. Beischer thinks that Millrock’s funding partner, Vale, will decide whether to go forward with the project after the next round of drilling. “This part of the project will decide, are they in for the long haul or are they going to back away. There are promising results but no major discovery yet,” he said. He said that if Vale backs away, Millrock would seek other funding partners because it seems like a good spot. “I think it’s a fantastic mining area,” he said. “It seems to me that a lot of the local people there enjoy the mining industry.”

Shopping brings in money but bringing in new companies or expanding existing companies helps the community support itself. “A company that exists in our service area, pays payroll in our service area,” Grubb said. “It helps the

growth of that community and the sustainability of that community.” SAND hopes to start a business incubator to help new local businesses get established. They had applied for a grant but the money ran out before SAND’s incubator was funded. A business incubator would help small businesses get through their first couple years. “We’re really driving hard on that particular one because we think that carries the best prospect with helping the

business community,” Grubb said. SAND is working on other programs in the meantime. One local advertising program uses digital picture frames. The picture frames hang in local businesses and show constantly changing ads from participating businesses. SAND also has the largest business directory in northeastern Pinal County. “There’s probably not a business that’s not in our business directory whether they’re members or not,” said Grubb. “If you’re looking for

Florence Copper Project holds open house to explain planned mine By Lana Jones The Florence Copper Project held an open house on Feb. 24 at the Florence Gardens Clubhouse. The open house officially ran from 6 to 8 p.m. although the public was touring the posters and speaking with company representatives even before 6 p.m. rolled around. A total of 74 people attended the open house. Florence Copper Project is Curis Resources (Arizona) Ltd.’s main project. The Arizona company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Curis Resources Ltd. of Canada. Curis is affiliated with Hunter Dickinson Inc. (HDI). The Project is located near Florence, south of Poston Butte, between Hunt Highway and the Gila River. The property was previously owned by BHP. Low copper prices caused BHP to delay the project and then sell the property to Merrill Ranch Investments in 2000. HDI acquired the property in 2009. Michael McPhie, Curis president and CEO, was on hand at the open house to answer questions and explain the planned mining and reclamation processes. Florence Copper Project plans to use a mining process called ISCR (insitu copper recovery).

In ISCR, an acid solution is pumped into the ore body using injection wells. The copper solution is then pumped out through recovery wells and processed. The copper is then recovered from the solution at a solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) plant. ISCR was one of the mining processes used at the San Manuel Mine. Water use is a common concern associated with ISCR mining. Curis Resources estimates the 216-acre Florence Copper Project will use about 1300 acre-feet of water per year (an acre foot is about 326,000 gallons of water). Curis estimates that if the same land were used for farming alfalfa it would use between 1700 and 2600 acre-feet of water.

The estimate is higher than University of Arizona (UA) Cooperative Extension estimates of water use for alfalfa in Pinal County. Based on UA estimates, 216 acres of alfalfa would use 1400 acre-feet of water. Wheat or cotton, two other common Pinal County crops, would use about 570 or 1000 acrefeet of water. The UA estimates are over 10 years old, though, and based on the county as a whole. They may not accurately represent current water use by farmers near Florence. Curis Resources expects production on the Project to begin by 2012. Check back for updates on the progress of the Florence Copper Project in our semi-weekly column, The Mining Brief.

Miners ready for the diamond; compete in Florence Tourney By Frank Smith The San Manuel High School varsity baseball team is ready for another run at the state playoffs, where they lost in the quarterfinals last year. The Miners opened up the 2011 season with play in Florence at the Joe S. Padilla Tournament. In his 31st year at the helm, Head Coach Donnie Payne will look to improve on a record 13 – 11 overall and 8 – 6 in region play. San Manuel is projected to finish 4th in the region this year. The Miners lost six starters but will return three starters off last years team. Top Returners for the upcoming season are Seniors Daniel Padilla – 1st Base, Zac Dale - Short Stop, Tim Scott – Centerfield, Elfie Vigil – Pitcher, and Junior Alexander Smith – 2nd Base. Top Newcomers looking to contribute are Carlos Zazueta – Leftfield, Alex Borboa – Leftfield/1stBase, Demetrious Dietz – 3rd Base, John Ruiz – Catcher, Andy Monfred – Outfield, and Anthony Garcia – Outfield. Coach Payne said, “If we develop a couple of pitchers we will be competitive in our region. We have great leadership from our captains Daniel Padilla and

Elfie Vigil.” The tournament games were limited to five innings of play or one hour and a half time limit. The Miners took part in the four day tournament in Florence with San Manuel taking on Santa Cruz in the first game on March 2nd, taking the loss 4 – 0. Santa Cruz scored one run in the first inning, two runs in the second, and one run in the fifth inning. The Miners rallied late in the game in the fifth inning with the bases loaded with two outs but were unable to push across a run. By Frank Smith The 2011 edition of the San Manuel High school Lady Miners varsity softball team is geared up and ready to go for another run at the state playoffs, the ladies kicked off the season this past weekend at the 8th Annual Wrangler Classic in Wickenburg. Head Coach Deanne Brewer in her 12th year, along with assistants Brian Brewer, Rachel Franco, and Bethany Smith will try to better last year’s record of 18-8 overall and a 7-1 record to go with a 2nd place finish in the region behind Pusch Ridge. The Lady Miners also lost in second round at state playoffs to their nemesis Pusch Ridge. The ladies lost starters Teisha Renteria - starting third baseman. Teisha was a huge part of the team last year, she was a tough third baseman and four year letterman. She left big shoes to fill. The ladies also lost Brittney Garibay - starting outfielder. She was an excellent outfielder quick. Ashley Paulsen - first baseman. Ashley worked hard to earn a starting position last year at first base. She had to live up to the legacy Mayra Tamayo left at first base. She did a great job. All of these girls were leaders both on and off the field.

Miner Track hits the track on the right foot By Frank Smith The San Manuel High School Miner Track team will take to the track on the right foot as Coach Al Trejo and assistants Maria Lopez (jumps), William Kotter (distance), and Steve Elmore (Weights) have prepared the Miners for the tough competition ahead of them in the 2011 season. Last year the Boys team were the 2A South Region RunnerUp Champions and the Girls team took 3rd place in the Region, the Miners had 23 athletes qualified for the State meet. The Miners lost 11 starters but will return 12 boys and four girls to this years squad. Top returners are Marcos Sierra

state. We now have automatic times/distances to qualify for state , as well as provisional times/distances. We no longer have regional qualifiers to get to state. Therefore we will have less athletes qualifying for state. I am hoping that 11 athletes qualify for state this year. We should be strong in the hurdles and middle distances for the boys team and strong in the weights for the girls team. We will have a region invitational that allows us to have a region champion and we should be one of the top two schools vying for that title in the boys competition. We have depth in the boys squad that will make us very competitive. We have

By John Hernandez The Second Annual Mammoth-San Manuel Education Foundation Fund Raising Golf Tournament is being held this Saturday, March 12, at the San Manuel Country Club. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with a 9:00 a.m. “fly over” start. The fly over start replaces the traditional “shotgun” start.

An airplane will take off from San Manuel Airport and will arrive at the first tee box flying low over the first group of golfers signaling the start of the tournament. The plane will then circle the golf course and return to the airport. The format for the tournament is a four-person scramble. The registration fee is $45 per person which includes golf,

cart and lunch. There will be plenty of prizes including a longest drive, closest to pin, split the pot and plenty of raffle tickets. Players will get a chance to participate in a silent auction of some very nice items including a foursome at the Omni Tucson National Golf Resort. Why not go to Beautiful Lengths? More than 200,000 ponytails have been donated to Pantene Beautiful Lengths since the program began in 2006. This week, your local reporter, Lana Jones, added one more to the total. Beautiful Lengths, working with HairUWeave, creates wigs from the donated ponytails. The wigs are then given to cancer patients through American Cancer Society wig banks.

Town of Mammoth Public Hearing Regarding the Use of CDBG Funds The Town is expected to receive approx. $280,000 in FY2011 federal CDBG funds from the Arizona Department of Housing Regional Account (RA). The Town also intends to apply for up to$300,000 in FY2011 CDBG funds from the State Special Projects (SSP) account. ARTICLES OF INCORPORATION OF SPARROW’S NEST, INC. KNOW ALL PEOPLE BY THESE PRESENTS: THAT WE, the undersigned, have this date associated ourselves together for the purpose of forming a non-profit corporation pursuant to the laws of the State of Arizona and for that purpose, do hereby adopt these Articles of Incorporation. The corporation is intended to be an organization exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and Regulations as may now exist or as may hereafter be adopted and an organization to which contributions made are deductible under Section 170(c)(2) of the Internal Revenue Code and Regulations as may now exist or as may hereafter be adopted. ARTICLE V Notwithstanding any other provision of these Articles, the corporation shall not carry on any act or activities or transact any business not permitted to be carried on (a) by a corporation exempt from Federal Income Tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and its regulations as that Section and regulations now exist or may hereafter be amended or under corresponding laws and regulations hereafter adopted, or (b) by a corporation, contributions to which are not deductible under Section 170(c)(2) of the Internal Revenue Code and its regulations as that Section and regulations now exist or may hereafter be amended or under corresponding laws and regulations hereafter adopted. No substantial part of the activities of the corporation shall be the carrying on of propaganda, or otherwise attempting to influence legislation, and the corporation shall not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distribution of statements) any political campaign on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate for public office. ARTICLE VI No part of the net earnings of the corporation shall inure to the benefit of, or be distributable to its members, directors, officers, or other private persons, except that the corporation shall be authorized and empowered to pay reasonable compensation for services rendered and to make payments and distributions in furtherance of the purposes of the corporation. The corporation shall have all the powers of a non-profit corporation as provided by the Arizona Revised Statutes relating to nonprofit corporations Article VII Upon dissolution of the corporation, the Board of Directors shall, after paying or making provision for the payment of all liabilities of the corporation, dispose of, deliver or distribute all of its assets to an organization or organizations organized and operated exclusively for charitable, educational, religious or scientific purposes, which shall at the time qualify as exempt organizations under Section 501(c)(3), of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954 and Regulations as may at that time be in effect, or shall be distributed to the federal, state or local governments for a public purpose. ARTICLE VIII The Bylaws of the corporation shall govern the conduct of the affairs of the corporation. The eligibility requirements, obligations and rights of the members, including the right to vote, shall be as provided in the Bylaws. The corporation will not have members. The power to alter, amend or repeal these Articles of Incorporation and the Bylaws or to adopt new Bylaws shall be vested and reserved to the directors or members as specified in the Bylaws. Trekell Road Casa Grande, AZ 85122 ARTICLE X The private property of the directors and officers of the corporation shall be forever exempt from all corporate debts, liabilities and obligations of every kind whatsoever, pursuant to the laws of the State of Arizona. No director, officer, employee, or other person who serves shall be liable, personally, for any debt or obligation of the corporation by virtue of having acted in such capacity as a director, officer or employee, but shall be indemnified by the corporation for any such debt or obligations, including any costs, expenses, attorney’s fees and court costs, unless such debt or obligation arises as a result of: (1) any acts or omissions by such person which are not done in good faith or which involve intentional misconduct or a knowing violation of criminal law, (2) for any violation of A.R.S. Section 10-3833, or of any future corresponding version of such statute, pertaining generally to a distribution of the assets of the corporation, or (3) any transaction from which such person directly or indirectly derived an improper benefit. ARTICLE XI The Board of Directors shall be comprised of the number of persons fixed by the Bylaws, but shall not be less than one, nor more than seven. The Board of Directors of the corporation shall have the power to elect successor Board of Directors in such manner, subject to such qualifications, and upon such terms and conditions and with such rights and privileges, including voting rights, as may be provided from time to time in the Bylaws of the corporation and as are not inconsistent with any provision of these Articles of Incorporation. The Bylaws shall provide that the Board of Directors may also appoint such advisory boards and committees as appropriate to conduct the business of the corporation. Canines, snakes and Elks? Call the Cops!

On Wednesday March 2, the Lady Cougars of Mountain Vista School defeated a good Ray Bearcats team 3 to 2. Cougar coaches and fans are optimistic that this team can be a contender for the league championship. The Lady Cougars traveled to Eloy on Monday March 7. Information on that game was unavailable at press time.

By John Hernandez We have all heard the expression “it’s a dog eat dog world.” On Saturday, March 19, your dog will literally be able to eat a dog - that is if you enter it in the “fastest hot dog eating dog” category at this year’s Elks Dog Show. Besides eating hot dogs, your dog can participate in 20 categories including hairiest dog, highest jumping dog, best costumed dog, and best retriever. Entry fees for the contests are $2 per category or you can enter all 20 for $14. Last year’s event was a hit with dog owners and the audience had a lot of fun! Hamburgers, hot dogs (not just for the canine competitors), French fries and drinks will be served. The first event starts at 10 a.m. Proceeds from the event go to the Elks Charity. Dog Show will have the Pinal County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit giving a demonstration of the crime fighting skills and efficiency of their dogs. There will also be eight rattlesnake avoidance training classes available during the day beginning at 8 a.m. The weather is starting to warm up and snakes will be out soon, so it is a good time to have your dog trained. Cost of the class is $35 which is a significant savings for this type of training. Jay Smith is a professional dog trainer. He is an obedience trainer as well as teaching dogs rattlesnake and poisonous frog avoidance. Watching Jay as he takes the dogs through the training exercises is interesting and entertaining. His interaction
