OBITUARY Rita Marie Aranda-Pina Rita Marie Aranda-Pina, 46, went to our Lord and Savior on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019. Our Rita was born on Sept. 15, 1972, to JoAnn and Alfredo Aranda. Rita was a bright, loving child who grew into an equally loving adult. Although Rita was born in Phoenix, she was raised in Winkelman, Arizona where she attended Winkelman Elementary and then moved on to Hayden High School, where she became a cheerleader, encouraged by her “Lobo School Pride.” Following her high school graduation, she ventured out to Tucson where she worked in the deli for Fry’s and found her knight in shining armor, Jesus Pina. They courted for a while (3 long years) and then they married on Dec. 3, 1994. Rita wanted more in her life so took a leap of faith, quit her job, and attended Tucson Medical College. Rita proudly graduated, becoming a Lab Technician. Rita enjoyed her work career; however, she realized she wanted something more, she wanted to be a mother. On Oct. 12, 1998, a bright-eyed baby boy, Santiago Pina, came

into this world, who is her pride and joy. She wanted to devote all her time to him so she quit her job and went back to Hayden, Arizona. She became involved in the community by cooking for Little League to raise money for the children in football and baseball. Her food would always sell out; we all know Rita was best known for her Mexican food. As Santiago grew older, Rita and her husband Jesus became involved in his academic and sports careers. Rita became a Teacher’s Aide at Winkelman Elementary, where she was known as Mrs. Rita. She enjoyed being a wife, a mother and a friend. When tragedy struck, she once again, put all her heart and soul into her son. We will always remember Rita for her famous tacos, the love of her family, and the love her faith. Rita is survived by her husband of 24 years, Jesus; her child, Santiago; mother, Joann Amavisca; brothers, Alfred (Brenda) and Simon (Nichole); brothers-inlaw, Albert, Bobby and Tony; stepchildren, Bernice,

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Family First: A Diaper for Change This past week up in the high desert of Arizona, we saw the weather go from cold and 10” of snow on the ground to 70 degrees and sunshine! It can change from winter to spring that quick. Along the roadways I’ve seen lupine and the desert poppies sprouting up from the ground as if to say we’re here, Spring has arrived! It reminded me how quick things can change. I was brought back to a time when my wife and I were young parents with newborn children in diapers. Diapers back then were more work, they were cloth diapers that needed to be rinsed out, stored in a bucket, then washed and dried to be used again, pew! Then a marvelous invention came about; paper disposable diapers, it was revolutionary! What a change, in more ways than one. Just as quick as our springtime, our children grew out of diapers into big kid’s pants and on into life with children of their own! Like all marvelous things there is a cost, today diapers for a child costs an average of $160 per month! At Family First we saw the need in our young families here struggling to provide this basic necessity for their children, and the Family Diaper Bank was born! Under the umbrella of the Family First organization is the Family Diaper Bank. As we started to collect diapers for our families with young children we soon found out there were others. Unlike our children who soon outgrow the need for diapers, right here in our community are disabled who never outgrow the need for diapers. Many suffer with incontinence their entire lives and need diapers for school and later for work. There are elderly who suffer with incontinence who need diapers to get out of the house. The Family Diaper Bank provides diapers not only for young children, but the disabled and the elderly! Studies have shown in homes where families cannot

afford diapers, health issues can occur. Diaper rash leads to crying babies, increasing the chance of abuse of the children. A lack of diapers can also lead to abuse with families caring for the disabled and the elderly. For the elderly a lack of diapers can force elderly to have to stay home, a leading cause of depression in elderly today. What am I saying? Diapers are a small item that “changes” lives! A change of a diaper “changes” a child, a disabled person, and elderly person’s lives for the better, along with those caring for them! At Family First, the Family Diaper Bank has been “changing lives” here in our community for 15 years with one small item; a diaper. “A diaper for change!” You can help “change a life” by helping the Family Diaper Bank provide this basic need, a diaper, to children, disabled, and the elderly today! You can write a check today to the Family Diaper Bank to “make a change” in our community! Call our office at 520896-9545 or our website at www.familyfirstpcc.org today. God Bless, /s/ Frank and Clare Grochocki PS: Donations to Family First and The Family Diaper Bank are tax deductible for federal and state of Arizona taxes and qualify for the Arizona State Charitable tax credit, a dollar for dollar credit. Our code #20429 is to be listed on your tax return form.

Sea Lions swimmers compete at Junior Olympics

The Sea Lions Swim Team competed in Junior Olympics held at the Sahuarita Aquatic Center on Feb. 22-24. Fourteen Sea Lion Swimmers achieved qualifying times at USA sanctioned swim meets to be eligible to compete. It was the first Junior Olympics for Jocelyn Hudson (9), Cooper Dale (11), Julie Ramirez (12) and Mia Dale (13). Snow on Friday presented an unusual challenge for swimmers at the outdoor facility. Swimmers took advantage of the situation and built a snowman and snow sea lion. During the events, swimmers stayed bundled up in parkas until moments before each race in the heated pool. Even in the challenging weather conditions the Sea Lions achieved many personal best times. Coaches were proud of the fact that we were the rare team that did not have any swimmers back away from any events because of the weather. Several Sea Lions won events during the competition. Johnny Smallhouse (12) won the 100 Breaststroke; AJ Lopez (15) won the 200 Individual Medley (IM); Tabitha Kellam (15) won both the 1000 Free and 200 IM; Evan Apuron (15) won the 1000 Free and 200 Free; and Darien Apuron (17) won the 200 Butterfly and 1650 Freestyle.

LOST to host grand opening celebration of Arnett Canyon Segment The Legends of Superior Trails (LOST) Inc. is excited to announce that it will hosting a grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting for the Arnett Canyon segment of the LOST on Sunday, March 24, 2019. The ceremony will be held at the Picket Post Trailhead of the Arizona Trail and will begin at 9 a.m. Attendees are encouraged to arrive by 8:45 a.m. This grand opening is a day long awaited by those who have been working on the trail system. The LOST was the first trail designated as a gateway community connector trail that connected the Town of Superior to the Arizona Trail Picket Post trail head. The original trail was demolished when the US 60 was expanded from two lanes

to four lanes. Funding to mitigate the loss of the important trail access trail was allocated by the Arizona Department of Transportation. That funding allowed the Tonto National Forest and the LOST to create a new alignment and construct the trail. Youth crew members from the Arizona Conservation Crews were contracted to construct the trails. The last phase of construction will be installation of signage.

Now both day users and those hiking the entire length of the Arizona Trail can safely access Superior through the Arnett Canyon segment. The new trail alignment does feature a two mile loop trail that connects the Picket Post Trailhead into Arnett Canyon and back to the Arizona Trail for those wanting a quick hike. Hikers can also hike from the Picket Post Trailhead to the Superior Municipal Airport via the LOST Arnett Canyon segment and through Pinal City.

Just 400 business days until Travel ID deadline; TSA will stiffen ID requirements in October 2020

A sample of the new traveler driver’s license.

PHOENIX – Arizona motorists who have a standard driver license or ID card have about 400 business days remaining until Oct. 1, 2020, when the federal Transportation Security Administration imposes stricter identification criteria for travelers to pass through airport checkpoints. Access to other facilities such as federal buildings and nuclear power plants is also affected.

The Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division offers the Travel ID to meet the requirements of the federal REAL ID Act of 2005. State law requires that Arizona motorists be given a choice between being issued a standard license or ID or getting the Travel ID. Arizona is among 37 states to offer this choice. Customers who wish to get the Travel ID can make an appointment at www.
