Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu has once again teamed up with the San Manuel Elks to keep young people safe on an important evening. Monday, the Sheriff presented members of the San Manuel Elks with a check for $5,000 for the group’s Project Graduation, now in its seventh year. Babeu explained that the funds are RICO funds -Racketeer Influenced Corrupt Organizations funds that stem from seizures of money or property used in gang, narcotics or racketeering related crimes or are the profits of such crimes. The funds are used to help support prevention activities like Project Graduation. Pictured from left are Dennis Hunsecker, PCSO Region Commander Lt. Resolution Copper, Nature Conservancy fencing land-swap property By Lana Jones A surveying and fencing project is underway east of Mammoth on the Resolution Copper owned property known as the 7B Ranch. The property is part of the proposed federal land trade that is needed before Resolution Copper can carry out its mining plans near Superior. The 7B is 3,073 acres. However, the fencing project will focus on two pieces of the ranch. The south piece will be fenced from Copper Creek Road down River Road south to Copper Creek Wash. The fence will then run west along the wash and back up to Copper Creek Road along the east side of the San Pedro River. The north piece will also be fenced between River Road and the San Pedro. Its southern end will border Copper Creek Road. Its northern end will border

adjacent properties. Celeste Andresen, 7B Ranch caretaker with The Nature Conservancy, said that the fencing was needed to protect the value of the land for the proposed federal trade. “Resolution wants the property as it’s traded to be the same as when it was proposed for the trade,” she said. The land has high conservation value. The National Audubon Society recognized the Lower San Pedro River as a globally Important Bird Area. The quality of the 7B Ranch habitat contributed to that recognition. Destructive activities like woodcutting, and illegal trespassing and hunting could lower the land’s conservation value and as a result, its value in the federal land trade. Fire lanes will also be improved so the land will See 7B, Page 6

‘Si Se Puede’: Honoring the work of Cesar Chavez Cesar Estrada Chavez, the late founder and president of the United Farm Workers of America, had deep confidence in the ability of people to move mountains of injustice. In fact, under his leadership, farm workers moved the agribusiness mountain and won the first union contracts for agricultural workers in the grape fields. A true American hero, Cesar was a civil rights, Latino, farm worker, and labor leader; a religious and spiritual figure; a community servant and social entrepreneur; a crusader for nonviolent social change; and an environmentalist and

consumer advocate. A second-generation American, Cesar was born on March 31, 1927, near his family’s farm in Yuma. At age 10, his family became migrant farm workers after losing their farm in the Great Depression. Throughout his youth and into his adulthood, Cesar migrated across the southwest laboring in the fields and vineyards, where he was exposed to the hardships and injustices of farm worker life. Cesar joined the US Navy in 1946, and served in the Western Pacific in the aftermath of World War II. His life as a community organizer began

after returning from military service in 1952 when he joined the Community Service Organization (CSO). For more than three decades Cesar led the first successful farm workers union in American history, achieving dignity, respect, fair wages, medical coverage, pension benefits, and humane living conditions, as well as countless other rights and protections for hundreds of thousands of farm workers. The significance and impact of Cesar’s life transcends any one cause or struggle. He was a unique and humble leader, as well as a great humanitarian

and communicator who influenced and inspired millions of Americans to seek social justice and civil rights for the poor and disenfranchised in our society. Cesar’s life cannot be measured in material terms. He never earned more than $6,000 a year. He never owned a house. When Cesar passed, he had no savings to leave to his family. A common man with an uncommon vision for humankind-stood for equality, justice, and dignity for all Americans. His ecumenical principles remain relevant and inspiring today for all people. A

symbolic march to honor the memory of Chavez and his work will take place tomorrow (March 31) at 3:30 p.m. beginning at the top of McNab and ending at the AJC office with a free reception and movie. “Si Se Puede”, the motto of the United Farm Workers of America, means, according to one translation, “Yes, we can!” Everyone is welcome to come out, enjoy a brisk little walk and the company of your neighbors, as we clean up the McNab Median on an Cesar Chavez day of service, and, prove, that, yes, it can be done!

By Lana Jones Beverly Prueter, the new executive director for United Way of Pinal County, has been working with United Way for 46 years. Up until she moved to Pinal in November she was the president and CEO of United Way of Greater Lima in Ohio. She took that job in 1976. A desire to be closer to her family and the opportunity to keep working with United Way pulled her out west. “I like the area really well and the opportunity to stay in United Way really spoke to me,” she said. “That’s what I’ve been doing all my life. I absolutely love working with people who are trying to help people.” She loves working with people and especially with volunteers. “Volunteers bring a different perspective every year. You’re never bored. There’s always someone bringing something new into the picture. They can bring vitality to an organization really well,” she said. And that’s one of the things she’ll be working on first here in Pinal, building a stronger volunteer base for the fundraising campaign. “We’ve got a great group of volunteers for the board and a great group of volunteers managing the fund but the campaign is lacking,” said Beverly. The campaign starts in the fall and is usually completed by February but it’s still wrapping up this year. Beverly said she’d like to recruit a campaign chair who will recruit volunteers for the campaign. The volunteers will circulate pledge sheets with information about the nonprofits United Way of Pinal County is going to fund and the types of services they’ll provide. “We’re doing a fairly good job of that in Casa Grande and Apache Junction. We just want to get around in the county itself,” Beverly said. “I think with the volunteer structure, you’ll have more people getting out. What it’s going to mean in the long run, if we raise more money we can help more people and that’s really what United Way is all about.” See United Way, Page 6

Letter to the Editor: Pratt is sponsoring ‘SunZia’ bill

Editor, San Manuel Miner: Regarding the proposed State Senate Bill 1517, described in a recent article in the San Manuel Miner, I am very disturbed that our District 23 representative, Frank Pratt, is sponsoring this bill. This bill is being promoted by the SunZia Transmission project and its lobbyist. I have a very difficult time

understanding why my State representative would place a higher priority on Federal purview in the line siting process than on protecting the interests of our district and our state. I have heard that this bill is being promoted as “streamlining regulation,” but at whose expense? This transmission line will potentially cut right through

Pinal County, and yet, one of our own representatives is sponsoring a bill that would force the state to accept Federal decisions on preferred route and project need, and would give a political entity (the Arizona Corporation Commission) the option of not referring the process to Arizona’s Line Siting Committee (with its associated

public hearings). Moreover, this proposed bill, which could significantly limit our state’s public input process for all future interstate power line proposals, is being written, promoted, and negotiated by a corporation that serves to benefit from it in the immediate future. That is no way to run state government. The SunZia

project made unsubstantiated claims about their project’s purported benefit to the State of Arizona during the Federal scoping period, and they will benefit greatly if the citizens of our state are denied the opportunity to publicly examine and debate these claims at the state level. I urge Pinal County residents to contact Mr. Pratt (fpratt@

azleg.gov). Let him know that SunZia and their lobbying firm should not be writing state law on transmission line siting in Arizona. Let him know that it is not in our state’s interest to limit the ability of our citizens to weigh benefits and impacts for all future transmission line projects. /s/ Peter Else Mammoth

How much will the solar project cost M-SM taxpayers? Editor, San Manuel Miner: I would like to bring to your attention, a few issues concerning the MSMUSD deal with Tioga energy. It’s stated in the Miner, that the savings of the first year would be $18,000. The total savings over a 20-year deal, would be $700,000. If the total savings is divided: $18,000. After the first year’s savings, it would be 38.9 years. In 20 years, to recognize a $700,000 savings, there have to be an average annual savings of $35,895. This seems highly unlikely with escalation rate of 3%, annually. Has anyone seen a schedule of estimated savings for each individual

year of the contract? It is also stated that the next step would be negotiating the terms of the power purchase agreement. What does terms imply here? From the limited amount of information given in the Miner, and, the presentation at copperarea.com, that a savings is not guaranteed, not even a percentage of the estimated savings is guaranteed. What appears to be, from this information, is MSMUSD will pay a specified amount for electric power that will allow Tioga Energy to return their cost in a seven-year period. After that, MSMUSD has an option to pay for the system, again, to become owners of

it. This deal makes MSMUSD speculators in the utility market. I don’t understand why anyone thought it was to push this issue through a vote without a public discussion,

first. Any issue involving tax payers money over a period that could be a decade, or more, should be discussed, publicly, before bringing it to a vote.

Editor, San Manuel Miner: Good for Parrish Traweek! He did a great job in his editorial last week of bringing the” Desert Dump” to the attention of our community. I too have been embarrassed over this. When my family visits from Colorado, they like to walk in the desert. The first time they went out, my daughter-in-law took her digital camera for some spectacular shots of the beautiful cactus and returned in disbelief with pictures of

DUB’S

garbage! garbage! and more garbage! When she returned to her Colorado home, she sent these pictures to her family in Texas. Yes, I was totally embarrassed as was Parrish. What is so difficult for our citizens to drive to Mammoth, pick up their free dumping coupons, load their stuff and take it to the transfer station in Oracle? Or take the small stuff to the MVD recycling center? My other concern is the median in the center of McNab. Who is

Bench placed at church in honor of Hamills Family and friends of Bob and Karen Hamill traveled from California, Canada and Oklahoma, as well as within Arizona, March 20 to dedicate a memorial bench at St. Bartholomew’s Catholic church in honor of the long time residents of San Manuel. The bench was commissioned and installed by the local Knights of Columbus, Council 5542, in recognition of Hamill’s tireless dedication to the Knights and the community. “We Knights would be nothing without the support and encouragement of our wives and families,” said Gene Helgeson, Grand Knight of Council 5542. “Karen was always there for Bob, no matter what task or project he took on, and he took on a lot,” Helgeson added. Hamill, a metallurgist for Magma copper, was

the Charter Grand Knight when the Knights of Columbus council was

reactivated in 2001. The original council was formed in the early 1960’s.

and dedication. Hamill’s sister, “Mel” Roberts, and her husband travelled from Oklahoma City, OK for the dedication. “Bob loved being a Knight and being involved in the San Manuel copper museum and all the activities in the town,” she said. Along with the museum, the Hamills were involved in many aspects of local life including Copper Town plans, Fourth of July Celebrations and Patriotism Day observance.

Payne said, “This was a big win for us because Miami was ranked number one in the state. By Diana Stirling Spring has sprung and we’re enjoying warmer days and

the return of goldfinches and grackles. Don’t forget your library for books and

online resources about all things spring—redecorating, gardening, home repair and

remodeling, birdwatching, etc. We’ve got some exciting programs lined up for Saturdays

Lady Miners place second in tournament

in April. Here’s what you have to look forward to. You may have heard that the Oracle Historical Society is the current site for the traveling exhibition Key Ingredients, a project of the Smithsonian Institution. Mammoth Library and the Mammoth Historical Society are proud co-sponsors of two Key Ingredients events in April. This coming Saturday, April 2, Mary Melcher will deliver a presentation about Arizona Food During the Depression and WWII. Come and learn about how people coped during those lean times. (You may have stories from your own family to tell.) There may be lessons worth revisiting in these tales. The program starts at 2 p.m. and it’s free. On Saturday, April 16, Onofre “Taffy” Tafoya will give a free talk about his new book Los Mineros: The Hard Rock Miners of San Manuel. The author has lots of photos and stories about his experiences in the mine. Come and enjoy a great storyteller at work, share your own stories, and learn more about the mining history of our area. The program starts at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30, we’ll be

co-sponsoring another Key Ingredients event. Martha Burgess will lead us on a short field trip to gather cholla buds. Then we’ll come back to the library and learn how to cook the delicious morsels. The program starts at 8:30 a.m. (to beat the heat) and it’s free. Participation is limited to 15 people and it’s filling up fast, so give us a call (487-2026) to register if you are interested. Our book club selection for April is Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. The book tells the fascinating true story of Mortenson’s experiences establishing schools in remote areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. The book club will meet on Saturday, April 30, at 11 a.m.—after the cholla bud harvest and cooking demonstration. (You can sign up for both events!) Stop by the desk to borrow a copy of Three Cups of Tea. For more information about these or any of our other programs, please visit library. townofmammoth.us, give us a call at 520-487-2026, or, best of all, come by and see us at 125 Clark Street in Mammoth.

Wanted: Members of the greatest generation By John Hernandez Tom Brokaw called them “the greatest generation” in his book of the same name. He argued that the generation that came of age during the Great Depression and World War II was the greatest generation any society ever produced. The people of this generation shared the hardships of 25 percent unemployment, millions losing their jobs and life savings, and shortages of food and housing. Remember there was no unemployment insurance, no food stamps, no Federal savings insur-

ance. When a bank closed and went out of business, your money in the bank was lost forever. As America slowly climbed out of the Depression, World War II began. Americans not only had to endure their loved ones going off to fight and die in the war, but there was the rationing of goods and services. When this generation returned from the war, they started to build the country into the world power it is now. The Key Ingredients: America by Food traveling Smithsonian Exhibition is looking for people from the “greatest generation” or

their descendants who remember stories their parents or grandparents told them about how their family endured these hard times. What did they eat? Tell us about your “victory garden,” sugar ration stamps, meatless Thursdays and all the history of these times. On Saturday, April 2, from 2 - 4 p.m., there will be a talk and community discussion about Arizona Foods During the Depression and World War II. This presentation will be at the Mammoth Public Library, 125 Clark Street in Mammoth. History scholar Mary Melcher will lead the presentation

Fibromyalgia? Chronic Fatigue? Do you feel like every drop of energy is drained from your body and some days you just hurt all over? Does going to the bathroom feel like a ten- mile hike? You are not alone. Six million Americans suffer from the effects of fibromyalgia. But the sad fact is most of them have been told they’re crazy, lazy, or just depressed. Do You Have Any of the Following Symptoms? • • • • •

Aching all over Disturbed sleep Tender points in the neck, and spine Recurring headaches Fatigue & Stiffness

Maybe your doctor doesn’t even think fibromyalgia is a real disease, but you know it is. You suffer with it every day. Fibromyalgia is often called the invisible disease. You look fine on the surface, but underneath you’re often exhausted and in excruciating pain.

There is still time to head towards Gold Canyon and a different century. The Arizona Renaissance Festival continues through this weekend. Belly Dancer Sophia Balentine will perform again as part of the Tartanic Show or head to the arena for the ‘Joust to the Death.’ Head to our website at www.copperarea.com to see some video from the Festival. My name is Dr. John Huntington, D.C. Over the past 23 years I’ve used gentle treatments to help thousands of fibromyalgia patients feel better and live healthier, more joyful lives. The more patients I helped get better, the more I realized that… No Woman Should Have To Suffer The Way You Do.

I’ve made it my mission in practice to help those suffering with chronic pain like you. To help women with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue, I’m running a special offer for women suffering from fibromyalgia. For 15 days only, $27 will get you all the services I normally charge new patients $140 for! Just call by April 20 and you'll get... An in-depth consultation about your health and well-being where I will listen…really listen…to the details of your case. A complete neuromuscular examination. A full set of specialized x-rays to determine if a spinal problem is contributing to your pain or symptoms. A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so we can start mapping out your plan to being pain free. What Will Your Fibromyalgia Pain Feel Like 1 Month From Today? One of the biggest myths about pain is that it goes away all by itself, without any treatment. A May 1998 study in the British Medical Journal proved this myth false, showing that 75% of back pain sufferers who do nothing about it will have either pain or disability 12 months later. Let’s face it, if the pain hasn’t gone away by now, it’s not likely to disappear on its own. Don’t let this be you, call me today and see if I can help you. 520896-9844.

United Way

Continued from Page 1 Part of what makes the campaign difficult is just the size of the county. “It’s hard to reach people with all the communities. We do fund programs in most of the communities. It’s hard for people to get the message,” said Beverly. “Marketing is always a problem.” The economic state of affairs is also a problem. “The economy is very difficult and that’s why it’s important for us to reach out and get around in the different communities. “The challenge for any large county United Way is making their services known to people.” People may not know what services are available because the service agencies aren’t based in their community. For example, Beverly said that the United Way supports Community Action Human Resources Agency (CAHRA) out of Eloy. CAHRA provides mortgage

and utility assistance. Although they’re out of Eloy, they provide assistance to people throughout the county. With so many services and communities, Beverly herself is still learning everything the United Way and Pinal County has to offer. She’s been reading up on the county and traveling around visiting people and communities. “I’m trying to get caught up and learn what this United Way is doing in every community. We’re running a couple programs out of our office and some don’t do that,” she said. United Way of Pinal County runs three programs: Friend, Family and Neighbors Caregivers Outreach Project, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), and Success by Six. Beverly has a lot of work to do but she’s up to the challenge. “I’m just happy to be here,” she said. “I’m representing Pinal County and I’m going to serve it.”

The Tri-Community

Que Pasa At the suggestion of John Tabor and Americans United for Life, Center for Arizona Policy (CAP) led an effort to have the Arizona House and Arizona Senate pass a resolution honoring the pregnancy care centers. Family First Pregnancy Care Center was one of 20 centers present recognized for the service and volunteer work we do in the communities along the Copper Corridor. Our delegation of six people: Frank, Clare Grochocki, Anita Kauffman, Leasa Hogan, Mark Grochocki and Valerie Leach; were interview by Steve Smith our state Senator and Frank Pratt (not pictured). The resolution was passed by an overwhelming majority in both the Senate and House on March 3, 2011. (Submitted photo)
