CASA of Gila County receives an increase in applications

(Globe, AZ –March 13, 2019) The CASA of Gila County program has recently seen a significant increase in the number of people interested in becoming a CASA volunteer. Twelve applications were received since the end of December 2018, with 18 additional inquiries received through their Facebook social media page. The need for more volunteers still exists however, as there are approximately 70 children in the southern section) of the county (Globe, Miami, Hayden area) who are wards of the court, with only 5 of these children receiving advocacy services at this time. The northern section of the county has 42 children involved with the courts, with 28 being assigned a CASA. Eleven of the new applications were from people living in the Payson/Pine/Star Valley area with only one applicant living in Globe. The vision of the program is to have an advocate for every abused and neglected child in Gila County. Even with endless recruiting efforts, the county program continues to struggle obtaining an interest from that area of the county to help them meet their goal. “Many of those who inquire about the program and time commitment respond by stating this is something that will have to wait until they have the time,” comments Coordinator Emily Leverance, “The citizens of Gila

County are concerned and want to help, but just fear the responsibilities and demands will be too hard to fulfill with their other daily obligations but we currently have volunteers who work full time jobs, have a family of their own, and still find the time to be amazing advocates.” On an average, volunteers spend 15-20 hours a month on their case with flexibility to make one’s own schedule. CASA volunteers provide support and advocacy for children who are either in foster care or in the care of relatives. Volunteers receive in-depth training and ongoing support from their local program as well as from the National CASA/

The Kearny Elks would like to thank the folks in the Copper Basin area for supporting our raffle during Pioneer Days. Without your support it wouldn’t be possible for the Kearny Elks Lodge to contribute back the communities. Again thank you for supporting us in this worthwhile cause. March 13, 2019 Dear Kearny Residents, Much of the Southwest is considered a high-hazard fire environment. Based on recent history and experience, these areas possess all of the ingredients necessary to support large, intense, and uncontrollable wildfires. Within this hazardous environment are individual homes, and entire communities. Many homeowners, are ill-prepared to survive an intense wildfire. It is not a question of “if ” a wildfire will occur, but when. The odds of losing human life and property are growing. The Town of Kearny would like to protect you and the community from the dangers of wildfires. Living where wildfires can occur, poses a risk to your property and loved ones – but it is possible to live compatibly with this natural event. The Fire Chief is very concerned about this upcoming fire season. Even though, we have received more rain than usual, it has caused more weeds. Once the rain stops, the weeds will dry out and this will make for a dangerous fire season. Please clear weeds, dry grass, dry shrubs or dead trees surrounding your property. Thank you for your support. Town of Kearny Staff

Ray softball off to promising start

By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News After reaching the semifinals of the 2018 1A Softball Championship, the Ray softball team started the 2019 season with fourstraight wins. The Lady Bearcats did suffer threestraight defeats last week in the Tucson Badger Softball Classic, but those losses

were against a pair of 5A teams and a 4A team. That’s just good preparation for 1A competition later in the season. In its four wins, Ray has outscored its opponents by a combined score of 38 – 8, which includes a 7 – 1 victory against 3A San Tan Foothills in the season opener. Four Lady Cats are hitting .350 or better, including junior Shelby Yocum (.778), senior Tara Lorona (.500), senior Daniella

Hinojos (.583), and senior Julie Meza (.357). Yocum leads the team with seven extra-base hits, including three homeruns. Lorona has cranked a pair of dingers while Hinojos and Yocum are tied for the team lead with four doubles apiece. On the mound, Ray is led by Hinojos, a 1A All-Conference 1st Team pitcher a year ago. So far in 2019, the Lady Cats’ ace is 4 – 0 with a 1.30 ERA to go along with 39

K’s in 27 IP. With the experience and talent that the Lady Cats display, they figure to potentially parlay a promising start to their season into an historical finish. Up next: Mar. 20 vs. Superior at 4 p.m. and Mar. 22 vs. Holbrook at 9:30 a.m. as part of the Chandler Prep Softball Classic at the Rose Mofford Softball Complex in Phoenix.
