M

arch has been a busy month for Superior and this month is full of ribbon cuttings, grand openings and of course the 31st Annual Apache Leap Mining Festival. The Hotel Magma has official opened to the public and we all are eagerly awaiting the opening of the new restaurant, The Barmacy. The Legends of Superior Trails, Inc. also will be hosting its ribbon cutting for the new segment of Arnett Trail on March 24 and the Hotel Magma will be hosting its public grand opening on

Saturday, March 30. We have much to celebrate in Superior! This month the Council will also be finalizing the Chief of Police selection process. There will be a meet and greet open to the public so our citizens can meet the two finalist candidates on Thursday, March 14, from 6-7 p.m. in the Superior Town Council Chambers. The Town Council will conduct final interviews and make their selection on Monday, March 25, during a special council meeting. With Spring just over a week away, it is time for Town Council to host its annual retreat to focus on the Town budget and ensure that we are continuing to work on priority projects, while also meeting the key performance indicators of our strategic plan. This is one of my favorite meetings of the year because we have the opportunity to review our progress and improve our strategy to accomplish our goals. Now that our agreements with Resolution Copper are complete, we will be able to adequately focus on the development of the Multi-Gen Center, which includes the Enterprise and Innovation Center. The Town of Superior was invited to attend the Colorado Impact Days in Denver with Chicanos Por La Causa this week to promote our Opportunity Zone investment opportunities. We have several outstanding projects that would qualify for investment by those utilizing Opportunity Zone investment funds. We are hoping to attract investors to our airport, downtown, industrial park and also to the Boyce Thompson Arboretum. Our construction at the Food Court park is almost complete. In partnership with the Copper Communities Food Hub, a joint project of the Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition and the Southern Gila County Economic Development Corporation, the

Town was able to install new sinks, a water heater and gates to secure the food court spaces, a shade pergola, new plants and a water feature. This grant will allow for local vendors to have a place that meets health code requirements for food sales. The food court will also be the home to the expansion of the Globe-Miami Farmers Market this summer as part of the overall regional food sustainability project. A ribbon cutting and grand opening will be scheduled soon. The Public Works team has been working diligently to have this completed by the festival, and we all will welcome the additional shade at events downtown. Winter has been much wetter and colder than we have seen in the past. It is great to get outside and enjoy all of the wildflowers growing in the desert and get out on the trails and enjoy the water flowing in the creek. Don’t forget to come out and enjoy the Apache Leap Mining Festival this weekend, as there is something fun for everyone on the schedule of events.

Joe Castro selected for Honor Flight By Mila Besich Superior Sun

Joe Castro, a lifelong resident of Superior, has been selected to be one of thousands of Veterans who have been selected to visit Washington D.C. to see the World War II memorial and Smithsonian Exhibits that tell the stories of the American Veterans. The Honor Flights are a collaboration of non-profit organizations dedicated to transporting as many United States military Veterans to visit the memorials of the wars they have fought in. Castro is expected to make the trip to Washington, D.C in late May as long has his health allows him to travel. He will be assisted on the trip by volunteers who donate their time to assist the Veterans on their journey. The Honor Flights are sponsored by Southwest Airlines from Phoenix, and when the Veterans enter the airport and exit the airplane, the airport comes to stop as fellow travelers stop to clap and salute these Veterans. For many of the Veterans, this may be their only chance to visit the monuments and see how their service is memorialized in our nation’s capitol. During a brief visit with Mr. Castro, he shared that he had served in the United States Navy. “I went in a boy, and came out a man,” he explained. He was a master forger and lied about his age to get in the Navy at 16 years old. He served for four years in the seas near Japan on an amphibious assault ship. He shared in his visit that he experienced things that shaped his life, both good and bad. He made many friends and expressed how he wished his fellow local veterans Tino Diaz-Gonzales and Ray Ramirez could make the trip with him to Washington D.C. As the days and years have gone by, he wants to make sure that Superior does not forget the Veterans who have served in all of the wars. “I hope that there is always respect for the Veterans who have served, and that their stories are somehow told, especially as the community grows,” he said. Mostly he wants to make sure that the service of his friends and family are never forgotten. “This is not about me; it is about my friends who have served,” he said. Castro, shared that coming back to Superior and seeing the smelter as he got closer to town was a reminder that

he was home. “The smelter stack was our monument, a landmark,” he said. “You knew you were home as soon as you saw it.” Following his time in the service, Joe worked for mines and eventually retired. He enjoyed serving a coach and organizational leader with the Superior Little League. He was the coach of the Boys Senior League team who went to Kentucky for the All Star Games in the 60’s. An honor and privilege that he is proud of, just as he is proud to have served in the military. Author’s Note: Just following the visit with Mr. Castro, his health took a turn. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Castro and his family. We pray for a recovery that will allow him to make this trip to Washington, D.C.

Joe Castro was recently selected for an Honor Flight.

Fun for all this weekend at the 31st annual Apache Leap Mining Festival

SUPERIOR, ARIZ. — From Friday, March 15 through Sunday, March 17, 2019, the Superior Chamber of Commerce will present the 31st Annual Apache Leap Mining Festival, a unique event that is beloved by locals and visitors alike. The fun-filled line-up of activities will include a parade, a carnival, live entertainment, and opportunities to learn about mining and Superior’s rich history. On Friday evening, the festival will launch on Main Street with a carnival, vendors, music and a Friday night “Miners Rock……and Roll” theme! Attendees are invited to dress for the Rock and Roll era and take a stroll down memory lane as they kick up their heels with ’50’s and ’60’s music by Neto and Imagine. This year’s festival will celebrate and honor the hard rock miners who worked in the smelter. Sadly, Superior’s iconic smelter stack had to be removed due to age and condition,

but it remains in the hearts of many of the town’s residents. Saturday will begin with the annual parade on Main Street led by the Grand Marshals, who all worked at the smelter. There will also be hilarious Chihuahua races, which will feature a runoff between the fastest small dog and the fastest Chihuahua. The Apache Leap Mining Festival will feature a variety of hands-on activities for all ages. Attendees will not want to miss the mining competition, in which men and women compete to win the coveted prize of a $3,000 purse by performing the grueling activities of sawing, mucking, spiking and drilling. Less strenuous options will include a tug-of-war competition, as well as rock painting for a project called Superior Rocks, where small painted rocks are hidden throughout the downtown area, found and admired by others, and then re-

Live Bands to perform at 31st Annual Mining Festival - 50’s Rock and Roll Contest Friday Put your dancing shoes on get ready for three evenings of live music during the 31st Annual Apache Leap Mining Festival. The band will begin at 7 p.m. and play until 11 p.m. Contests will begin at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, Superiorite, Arnold Martinez will be playing with the band Sol Deville which will be a country/western style band and cover hits. The will be playing from 7-11 p.m. Neto and Imagine Band will be back on Sunday to play everyone’s favorite cumbias and salsa mixes. hidden for someone else to find. Younger members of the family will enjoy the Kid’s Zone, where they will learn about mining hands-on and pan for pennies. After a full day, attendees can relax and enjoy a cold beverage from the Blasting Zone Beer Garden and dance in the streets to the music of Sol Deville. The fun will continue on Sunday with the music of mariachis and others. The festival will also offer attendees an opportunity to learn about mining and Superior’s history. Representatives from mine companies will be eager to share information about the many types of mining, and Westland Resources will present the “History of the Smelter,” a fascinating show describing the processes of mining in the past. In addition, historian speakers will share captivating mining stories of the area. For example, author and historian Jack San Felice will

talk about the little-known Woodbury Copper Mine that was in the vicinity of Florence and the Superstition Mountains. Nature lovers can also enjoy an interactive presentation by Wildman Phil, who will perform with his desert reptiles and choose brave members of the audience to assist him! This one-of-a-kind event is free to the public, with the exception of vendors, the carnival and the beer garden. Festivities will run from 5-11 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m.-11 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday. The Superior Chamber of Commerce is proud to invite visitors to “Discover Superior—a well-kept secret of an amazing little town.” The Chamber of Commerce is located at 165 W. Experienced Panthers on ‘right path’ By Andrew Luberda Superior Sun After finishing one win short of a state championship a year ago, the Superior baseball team is 4 – 2 to start this season. “So far, we have had a lot of up and downs early on,” Panthers sixth-year head coach Manuel Ortega told the Superior Sun. “The boys have handled (it) well. They have responded when I have needed them to. We still have some work that needs to be done, but we are heading in the right path.” Five of Superior’s first six opponents have been 2A or 3A teams, against which they’ve gone 3 – 2. The two losses – Morenci and Tombstone – were winnable games if not for

too many errors, according to Ortega. “This schedule will help us out in the long run because when you get to state every game is a tough game, so it helps us get ready for that,” said Ortega. The Panthers return their entire roster from last year, which will be beneficial come playoff time. “So far our greatest strengths have been our experience,” Ortega said. “We are a team with depth and a deep bullpen.” Sophomore Adam Navarrette (.500), junior Gabe Otero (.438) and senior Jesus Castellanos (.400) are the Panthers’ leading hitters in the early season. Castellanos leads the team with five steals and is tied for the team lead with two extra-base hits. He is also 2 – 0 in three appearances, allowing only three hits in 7 IP with an 0.00 ERA and 10 strikeouts. Gabe Castillo and Daniel

McConnell lead the pitching staff with 13 and 12 strikeouts, respectively. “The whole team is playing well right now,” Ortega answered when asked to name players who have exceeded his expectations. “We can always improve, but the players that have had early success are Jesus Castellanos – he has been huge in all phases of the game – and Daniel McConnell, who has played a huge role on the mound. He should have two wins. He has been throwing tremendous, so far. “I want to name the whole team because it takes a team to win a game, and the whole team has been working very hard.” Hopefully, hard enough to earn the last win that eluded them last year.

Central Arizona College Aravaipa Campus College for Kids featured at National Camp Conference The Central Arizona College Aravaipa Campus College for Kids program was featured during the recent American Camp Association’s (ACA) National Conference held in Nashville, TN. The abstract, ‘College for Kids’ 2018 Summer Camp: Improving Perceptions of Science & Shaping Lifestyle Choices by Sam Rauhalammi, Jamie Wolgast, Elissa Craig and Theresa Radke was one of two small day camps selected to present a talk and poster during the conference. Sam Rauhalammi, Professor of Biological Sciences at CAC, and Jamie Wolgast, College for Kids Program Director, represented CAC at the 2019 American Camp Association (ACA) Research Forum. During their presentation they explained how ‘A two-week day camp can have a large impact,’ discussing their experiences of using anatomy laboratory sessions to improve students’ perception of science, and shaping families’ lifestyle choices through educating the children. They shared their tips and tricks on how Central Arizona College’s ‘College for Kids’ summer camp inspires K12 students to pursue College level studies, and provides a fun summer break for children from diverse backgrounds. College for Kids is a day camp, organized annually, at the Central Arizona College’s Aravaipa campus. Over two weeks of the summer, it provides children an educational full-day program from Monday to Thursday. The camp serves youth from local communities surrounding the Campus. Many students attend on a full or partial scholarship. During the camp, transportation, all supplies, daily snacks and warm lunches are provided for participants. College for Kids’ theme for the summer 2018 was human anatomy. This topic was chosen to support biological science classes at students’ own schools, introduce locals to the college’s campus and promote healthy lifestyle choices through education. In 2018, fifty students (grades 2-6) and 12 group leaders (grade≥7) participated in seven anatomy

laboratory sessions. Each session lasted 40 minutes, had 16-18 students and four group leaders per class. Sessions were delivered in a science laboratory by a college biology professor and three volunteer helpers. Major body systems were discussed using a mixture of activities. Each student received a 19-inch tall plastic model of a human skeleton, to which structures were added using modeling clay. Supplementary handson experiments included handling living animals, performing chemical reactions, testing samples, studying real animal/human organs, investigating anatomical models and completing student workbook activities. Based on the research conducted during the 2018 College for Kids, evidence shows how this summer camp improved student’s attitudes towards science and how students perceived their favorite laboratory activities as being most transferrable to their families’ daily life. An increased interest in science can be attributed to positive learning experiences, better understanding of the subject matter and development of the participants’ practical skillset. Students learned about positive lifestyle choices and were provided opportunities to overcome their fears and grow self-confidence in a safe classroom environment. The summer camp improved students’ abilities to interact and communicate with others, and improved their ability to demonstrate teamwork skills while working in a group setting. Rauhalammi explained, “It has been previously shown (American Camp Association, 2018) that attending camps provides transferrable skills, increases college readiness and develops interpersonal abilities. We wanted to quantify the effectiveness of a two-week summer camp in shaping participants’ attitudes towards science subjects and assess students’ self-reported transferability of study material into the daily lives of their families.” He added, “As a scientist myself, I Continued on page 13

COLLEGE FOR KIDS Continued from page 11

think that it has been fantastic to see how we are incorporating more robust methods to assess College for Kids’ success, and doing this in a more systematic manner. - This [how to assess success of a summer camp / camp experience] was one of the central themes of the conference, and I believe that our work [on this] will help us to further develop our already outstanding camp - as well as, validate our successes to the donors and partners.” Wolgast has been the College for Kids Program Director for 11 years. She stated, “The kids are always priority number

one. It has always been my goal to provide the best possible program for them and our community. I had never done anything like this before. I am grateful to SaddleBrooke Community Outreach for providing the funds that made it possible to attend this conference. It feels so great to now be connected to a larger group of other camp directors and educators who offer us encouragement, support, and a wealth of resources. We look forward to using the tools we learned at ACA to take College for Kids to the next level.” Both Rauhalammi and Wolgast expressed

their appreciation to SaddleBrooke Community Outreach, Salt River Project, Arizona Public Service, Winkelman Natural Resource Conservation District and other donors for the many years that have supported this program. They are also grateful for the volunteers, families and campus staff for making the camp a success year after year. The 2019 College for Kids camp will focus on Animal Biology. Registration information and applications will be available later this spring. For more information about the College for Kids
