Tucson, where she graduated from Catalina High School. She and her younger sister Virginia Ann were as close as two sisters could be. While attending the University of Arizona, she met Bruce Byron Griffith, a tall, masculine redhead, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Institute. Bruce pursued her with great tenacity. They were married for time and all eternity in the Mesa, Arizona Temple on April 12, 1968. Over the years, she raised eight children, who were her greatest treasures: Corina, Gary, David, Cynthia, Julia, Keri, Amelia and John. She was the most patient, wonderful mother in the world and those qualities also made her the best grandmother to her 22 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. With a music teacher for a father, Andrea was destined to be musical. She played the flute and piano and later learned the organ, which she played for church services at an upbeat tempo the congregation appreciated. She was a master accompanist — she always made the singers sound better than they were and every note she played was felt. In college, she was in the University of Arizona’s marching band and played in the first Super Bowl halftime. Her love for her Savior, Jesus Christ, and her family were the two most important things in her life and she often expressed that love through music. Services for Mrs. Griffith were held Saturday, March 9.

Sue E. Varela

Sue E. Varela passed away Feb. 22, 2019 in Apache Junction. She was born Nov. 15, 1951 in Fostoria, Ohio to Robert and Patricia Finerd. Sue moved to Tucson as a young girl. She spend most of her adult years in Findlay, Ohio before moving to Kearny for several years, and then to Apache Junction. She worked at Banner Hospital as a caregiver and a house cleaner. Sue was preceded in death by her parents, two great-grandchildren and two nephews. She leaves behind her son, Tim Turner, in Apache Junction and a daughter, Tracie Hosley of Tucson; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Joyce Francisco of Kearny, Eloyce (George) Weisenbaugh of China, Mi, and Janice (Arnold) Bailey of Tucson; brother, Bob Finerd of Apache Junction; a large family; and, many friends. She loved camping and working in her yard. She always had a smile and, in any situation, she could always make you laugh. Her motto, while battling cancer, was, “It can take my health, but, not my sense of humor.” She will be missed very much.

Two police officers hit by vehicle By Mila Besich Copper Basin News During the evening of March 6, Hayden Police officers responded to a call at the Giant Gas Station in Winkelman. The call indicated that a male subject was damaging vehicles with his hands and his head. Hayden Police investigated the matter and determined that the suspect was Vianes Casias Jr.

CAC Aravaipa Campus College for Kids featured at National Camp Conference The Central Arizona College Aravaipa Campus College for Kids program was featured during the recent American Camp Association’s (ACA) National Conference held in Nashville, TN. The abstract, ‘College for Kids’ 2018 Summer Camp: Improving Perceptions of Science & Shaping Lifestyle Choices by Sam Rauhalammi, Jamie Wolgast, Elissa Craig and Theresa Radke was one of two small day camps selected to present a talk and poster during the conference. Sam Rauhalammi, Professor of Biological Sciences at CAC, and Jamie Wolgast, College for Kids Program Director, represented CAC at the 2019 American Camp Association (ACA) Research Forum. During their presentation they explained how ‘A two-week day camp can have a large impact,’ discussing their experiences of using anatomy laboratory sessions to improve students’ perception of science, and shaping families’ lifestyle choices through educating the children. They shared their tips and tricks on how Central Arizona College’s ‘College for Kids’ summer camp inspires K12 students to pursue College level studies, and provides a fun summer break for children from diverse backgrounds. College for Kids is a day camp, organized annually, at the Central Arizona College’s Aravaipa campus. Over two weeks of the summer, it provides children an educational full-day program from Monday to Thursday. The camp serves youth from local communities surrounding the Campus. Many students attend on a full or partial scholarship. During the camp, transportation, all supplies, daily snacks and warm lunches are provided for participants. College for Kids’ theme for the summer 2018 was human anatomy. This topic was chosen to support biological science classes at students’ own schools, introduce locals to the college’s campus and promote healthy lifestyle choices through education. In 2018, fifty students (grades 2-6) and 12 group leaders (grade≥7) participated in seven anatomy laboratory sessions. Continued on page 20

According to Hayden Police, Casias resisted arrest and fled the scene. Hayden Police called for backup; Kearny Police responded to the call and assisted with apprehending Casias on Highway 177 between Winkelman and Hayden. The pursuit ensued on foot and that is when Hayden Police Officer Robert Youdelman along with a Kearny Police officer were struck by a car. Officer Youdelman was treated on the scene and released. The Kearny Police Officer, who wishes to not have his name released, was airlifted to a Tucson hospital. He underwent emergency surgery and remains the hospital in serious but stable condition. He does thank everyone for their love, support and prayers. The suspect Vianes Casias Jr. was arrested at his mother’s home and was booked into the Gila County Jail. He was charged with disorderedly conduct and criminal damage, which were the charges before the pursuit. He has also been charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a Peace Officer, resisting arrest and escape. He remains in custody with a $250,000 cash only bond. His next hearing dates have not been set yet. David Savinen, 56, Kearny, was the driver of the vehicle that hit the officers. He was charged with giving false information to police officers and driving on a suspended license. Impairment was not a factor in the incident. Agencies assisting with the critical incident were: Hayden Police, Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, Gila County Sheriff’s Office, Globe Police, Superior Police, Kearny Police and Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Ray baseball displaying dominance in early season By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News The Ray baseball team is undefeated so far this season, and none of its games have been competitive. That’s not a knock on the opponents, which includes a pair of 2A teams, but rather a reflection of the Bearcats’ dominance. “The team clicked right away, and I attribute our success to our versatility such as speed (and) discipline at the plate,” senior captain Jaden Pace told the Copper Basin News. “Simply, we are all focused for the end goal to be a state title.” In their five victories so far this season, none have gone past five innings and the average margin of victory is more than 14 runs per game. If the offensive production doesn’t impress you, then consider the pitching numbers – two shutouts, three one-

hitters, and not more than two hits allowed in any game, so far. The team ERA is 0.56 with 50 K in 25 IP. Sophomore right-hander Derek Figueroa has been the ace of the Cats’ staff with three wins in as many starts. He boasts a 0.00 ERA with two hits allowed in nine innings pitched. Like his team, Figueroa has been dominant, fanning 25 of the 34 batters he’s faced. Which is the Cats’ greatest strength, hitting or pitching? It might depend who you ask. “I feel that our pitching is on key but our ability to hit and adapt to pitchers is our greatest strength,” said Pace, an All-Conference and All-Region middle infielder last year. Fortunately for the Bearcats, they have outstanding pitching as well. When the games matter most, good pitching usually stabilizes good hitting, and Ray might have the 1A conference’s best staff.

Five of Central Arizona College’s outstanding students have been selected to the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society All-Arizona Academic Team. All-Arizona students demonstrate academic excellence and intellectual rigor combined with leadership and service that extends beyond the classroom to benefit society. Phi Theta Kappa, the American

Association of Community Colleges, Arizona Community Colleges, the Arizona Board of Regents and the Follett Higher Education Group help these students reach their educational goals by awarding scholarships and issuing tuition waivers to any of Arizona’s three state universities: Arizona State University, Northern Continued on page 15

Ray MBB run through State Tournament ends with runner-up trophy

By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News The Ray boys’ basketball team entered last month’s 1A State Championship Tournament as the No. 4 seed and exited as the state runner-up after a 79 – 51 defeat against The Gregory School. Due to inclement weather that resulted in indecisiveness by Arizona Interscholastic Association, the Final Four of the 1A tournament took place on the same day – two games less than six hours apart for the winners of the semifinals games. Playing the semifinals and the state championships on the same day was previously unprecedented and proved to

be undoubtedly difficult circumstances for both teams. “The scheduling system that second weekend was tough on us due to only being able to practice one day,” senior Jaden Pace said. “We ran on the treadmill and did some workouts in the hotel weight room just trying to stay active and have something to do. “Playing two games [in a day] is tiring enough, let alone playing the second one for a state championship, where everything is on the line. It definitely took a toll on every player on our team and was a hard game to play on a double header.” Nonetheless, the Bearcats won’t make excuses, instead taking pride in playing their best basketball at the right time.

“The entire season I felt we came together,” Ray head coach Dustin Bingham told the Copper Basin News. “As we played [more] with one another, and understood how each other played, we were able to play some defense in addition to our offense. “By the end of the season, we were playing some of our best ball, and like I told our players, we hadn’t even played our best game yet.” The Cats saved their best for last. It was evident, especially defensively, as the Cats held Joseph City and Cibecue/Dischii Biko to 50 and 45 points, respectively, in the first two rounds of the tournament. “I felt that we were pretty confident going into the first weekend,” Pace said.

“I felt that the team was at its peak of the season and we really developed a sense of brotherhood that I haven’t seen in the team in a long time. The whole team was just ready to make the town proud.” The two victories to start the tournament propelled the No. 4-seed Ray to the semifinals, where it defeated No. 8 Mogollon, 51 – 41. The Mustangs were the third-straight opponent held to 50 points or less by the Bearcats, which largely attributed to their success in the state tournament. “(Playing good defense) was something I (stressed) throughout the entire year,” Bingham said. “Coming off last year we never were a high-scoring team and, in Continued on page 7

reality, it’s defense that wins championships.” Playing for a state championship following the emotions of a semifinal victory just a few hours prior was as tasking as one might expect. “We didn’t have enough time to enjoy our win in the semifinals,” Bingham said. “Had we been able to watch The Gregory School first, then slept on it, gathered

ourselves, and had a different approach, I think we would could’ve played a different game. But it is what it is.” It was enjoyable season the team and the coaches. Very few, except those in the locker room, believed Ray could have this type of season. Bingham credited his eight seniors for displaying the leadership and heart that is

necessary to have such a special season. “We took people by surprise,” Bingham said. “The moments after the wins in the state tournament, when we realized we were a step closer to where wanted to be, were the most enjoyable moments.” For Ray fans, the entire season was an enjoyable moment.

Pioneer Days Queens/Jr. Queens host annual fashion show The 2019 Pioneer Days Queens Fashion Show held at the General Kearny Inn this past weekend was a huge success! The event was hosted by Erica Flores, a 2004 graduate of Ray High School and former Junior Chamber Member. Erica has worked in television Channel 3 and CBS 5 and in the newspaper. Natural Gas Safety Wherever you live, work, or play. natural gas lines can be buried anywhere, even in areas where homes don’t use natural gas. So it’s important that EVERYONE knows how to recognize and respond to a natural gas leak, wherever they are.

A leak may be present if you: SMELL:

HEAR:

SEE:

a distinct sulfur-like odor, similar to rotten eggs, even if it’s faint or momentary.

a hissing or roaring coming from the ground, above-ground pipeline, or natural gas appliance.

dirt or water blowing into the air, unexplained dead or dying grass or plants, or standing water continuously bubbling.

IF YOU SUSPECT A LEAK • Exit the area or building immediately. Tell others to evacuate and leave doors open. • From a safe place, call 911 and Southwest Gas at 877-860-6020, day or night, whether you’re a customer or not. A Southwest Gas representative will be there as soon as possible. • Don’t smoke or use matches or lighters. • Don’t turn on or off electrical switches, thermostats, or appliance controls; or do anything that could cause a spark. • Don’t start or stop an engine, or use automated (garage) doors. COLLEGE FOR KIDS Continued from page 3

Each session lasted 40 minutes, had 16-18 students and four group leaders per class. Sessions were delivered in a science laboratory by a college biology professor and three volunteer helpers. Major body systems were discussed using a mixture of activities. Each student received a 19-inch tall plastic model of a human skeleton, to which structures were added using modeling clay. Supplementary hands-on experiments included handling living animals, performing chemical reactions, testing samples, studying real animal/ human organs, investigating anatomical models and completing student workbook activities. Based on the research conducted during the 2018 College for Kids, evidence shows how this summer camp improved student’s attitudes towards science and how students perceived their favorite laboratory activities as being most transferrable to their families’ daily life. An increased interest in science can be attributed to positive learning experiences, better understanding of the subject matter and development of the participants’ practical skillset. Students learned about positive lifestyle choices and were provided opportunities to overcome their fears and grow self-confidence in a safe classroom environment. The summer camp improved students’ abilities to interact and communicate with others, and improved their ability to demonstrate teamwork skills while working in a group setting. Rauhalammi explained, “It has been previously shown (American Camp Association, 2018) that attending camps provides transferrable skills, increases college readiness and develops interpersonal abilities. We wanted to quantify the effectiveness of a two-week summer camp

Sam Rauhalammi and Jamie Wolgast at the American Camp Association’s National Conference. in shaping participants’ attitudes towards science subjects and assess students’ self-reported transferability of study material into the daily lives of their families.” He added, “As a scientist myself, I think that it has been fantastic to see how we are incorporating more robust methods to assess College for Kids’ success, and doing this in a more systematic manner. - This [how to assess success of a summer camp / camp experience] was one of the central themes of the conference, and I believe that our work [on this] will help us to further develop our already outstanding camp - as well as, validate our successes to the donors and partners.” Wolgast has been the College for Kids Program Director for 11 years. She stated, “The kids are always priority number one. It has always been my goal to provide the best possible program for them and our community. I had never done anything like this before. I am grateful to SaddleBrooke Community Outreach for providing the funds that

made it possible to attend this conference. It feels so great to now be connected to a larger group of other camp directors and educators who offer us encouragement, support, and a wealth of resources. We look forward to using the tools we learned at ACA to take College for Kids to the next level.” Both Rauhalammi and Wolgast expressed their appreciation to SaddleBrooke Community Outreach, Salt River Project, Arizona Public Service, Winkelman Natural Resource Conservation District and other donors for the many years that have supported this program. They are also grateful for the volunteers, families and campus staff for making the camp a success year after year. The 2019 College for Kids camp will focus on Animal Biology. Registration information and applications will be available later this spring. For more information about the College for Kids program contact elissa.craig@ centralaz.edu, or call 520-3572810.
