Mila Besich named a 2019 Flinn-Brown Fellow by Academy Arizona Center for Civic Leadership

PHOENIX—Thirty Arizonans have been selected for the 2019 Flinn-Brown Civic Leadership Academy by the Arizona Center for Civic Leadership at the Flinn Foundation. In addition to representatives from the Phoenix metro area, eight of the Flinn-Brown Fellows are from northern, eastern, and southern Arizona, including Clarkdale, Cottonwood, Prescott Valley, Superior, Casa Grande, Tucson, and Sierra Vista. This is the first time Fellows have been selected from Superior and Casa

Grande. Superior Mayor Mila Besich is included in this group of leaders. She was also named as a Fellow for her work with the Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition. The 2019 cohort members represent the private and public sectors in business and industry, government, nonprofits and education. The competitively selected Fellows come from a wide range of backgrounds, work experiences, and political perspectives and are expecting to pursue roles as state-level elected officials, state-agency executives, policy advisors, members of state boards or commissions, and executives in statewide organizations that affect public policy. The Academy’s 14 interactive seminars, with a focus on policy, politics, and solutions, will begin in early February and conclude

in early May. Dozens of presenters include elected and appointed officials, judges, executives, scholars, business leaders and other experts. Topics include the state budget, K-12 and higher education, corrections, courts, water, rural and urban interests, transportation and many other issues. More than 350 Flinn-Brown Fellows have been selected since the start of the Flinn-Brown Academy in 2011. Together, the Fellows compose the Flinn-Brown Network, which provides long-term support, including continuing education and connection opportunities throughout the state, an annual FlinnBrown Convention, and other activities. “Each year we continue to be impressed with the wealth of Continued on page 3

Rebuild Superior, Chamber and Town tackle clean up on Pinal Ave. They were at it again! As part of the Blight Mitigation program, Rebuild Superior, the Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Superior have embarked on a major project on Pinal Ave and the surrounding streets. A group of volunteers, under the direction of Rick Cartier, Chamber V.P., created the Pinal Ave. Project. With the help of the community members that live in the area, the group are here to help cut back, clean up and paint the exteriors of any homeowners that want to participate. Saturday was a great day as many volunteers from Superior and 500 Youth and Leaders from the Gilbert Arizona Highland West Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints joined together and cut, raked and hauled away, many trailer loads and roll offs of weeds, clippings and general debris. Volunteers also worked at the Caboose Park to spruce it up. This is an ongoing “feel good” project and the group would love to have you join them. Please Rick at 602-5610807 for more information.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Kudos to volunteers for clean up on Pinal Ave. What a sight to see! It’s Friday night and I live across from the old Superior High School. I sit outside to watch the parking lot fill up with staff and young volunteers. I know and heard a lot of these kids that are coming will be doing volunteer work for Pinal Ave, cleaning. Do you, as Superiorites, know what these kids do? Their hard work is to beautify this Ave! A simple hello and thank you is needed. Please don’t ignore this! This is for all of us. I love to see these young and old fill

Carlson signs letter of intent to play golf at Lewis and Clark State By Tony Erquiaga The Humboldt Sun

Tatyana Carlson (sitting) signed a letter of intent to play golf for Lewis-Clark State in the fall. Pictured with her is her father Mark Carlson, Lowry golf coach Savannah Talbott and mother Anna Carlson. (Photo courtesy Tony Erquiaga, Humboldt Sun)

Years of hard work on the golf course paid dividends for Lowry High School senior Tatyana Carlson. The Buckaroos senior recently signed a letter of intent to play golf for Lewis-Clark State in Lewiston, Idaho. She will be joining a team that had success this past year. The Warriors were ranked 24th in the last fall NAIA Top 25 poll. “I did think it was possible to get where I am,” said Carlson. “I know I put myself out there, I worked hard for it. I was out on the golf course from day to night and I truly wanted it for myself.” Carlson was the Northern 3A MVP this past fall in 2018 and helped the Lady Bucks win the Northern 3A Regional Championship over rival Elko. She shot a 74 on the final day of the NIAA 3A State Championships in Truckee to win the individual title with a two-day score of 155, to beat Truckee’s Ryan Flynn by three shots. The last player to win an individual state title at Lowry was Makenzie Swecker in 2003.

Carlson was the co-MVP of the Northern 3A in 2017 and she placed fifth at the state tournament. She played in the state tournament in each of her four years at Lowry, including a fourth-place finish in 2016. “There were some ups and downs,” Carlson said. “I wanted to win the state championship this year so bad. After my junior year I told myself I was done playing around and time to get serious.” Carlson will be the lone Nevadan on the Lewis-Clark State roster, which features women from Washington, Idaho, Montana, Utah and Canada. “I fell in love when I got up there,” Carlson said. “I am excited to play at the next level. They have some girls that have helped me along. They welcomed me with open arms when I visited and we were able to play some golf too.” She plans on majoring in nursing, with a minor in Spanish. Tatyana is the granddaughter of Nacho and Dora Villaverde of Superior. Editor’s note: This story is reprinted with permission from The Humboldt Sun.
