Four nominated for 2010 Citizen of the Year By Vicki Clark Four nominations have been received for the 2010 Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year award for a variety of reasons ranging from youth participation to community commitment. The announcement of the honor will take place during the annual COY dinner next Monday evening at Trendz Restaurant in Hayden. Also on the agenda is the announcement of the new board of directors of the chamber. Nominations for COY are asked from the public at large. This year four letters were submitted, but only two were eligible for consideration. Each nomination is deserving according to the selection committee, which is made up of previous COY winners, but certain guidelines have to be

adhered to. Nominated were Rhonda Cooper, Virgil Thompson, the Kearny Little League Board and the duo of Amanda Kelley and Debra Pace (a joint nomination). Ronda Cooper, according to the nomination letter, believes that her generation needs to nurture the kids in the area, enabling them to become responsible and contributing members of society. The old saying, “If you want something done, give it to a busy person,” describes Ronda, the letter states. She is a single mom and a new grandmother, however, she finds time to volunteer. She is a wrestling coach and a Little League coach, is a member of the HHS Alumni Band and she along with the Town of Hayden hosted volleyball games during the summer.

She is a member of the Hayden Volunteer Fire Department and the Hayden Town Council and will be running for Mayor in the March election. She is also a member of a new group starting in the Copper Basin area called the Community Action Board (CAB). This group is trying to bring activities and economic development to the Hayden, Winkelman and Dudleyville areas. The letter goes on to say that Ronda’s most important volunteer work is being president of the Lobo Booster Club. The group’s mission statement is: The Lobo Booster Club will enhance the school experience of the students at HWUSD #41 through positive actions. There are only a few people in the group, but they have held tailgate parties, fed everyone

during Homecoming, helped with Halloween Fun Night, set up water stations during Halloween, hosted art contests and held a community splitthe-pot. The main goal of the group is to give every senior graduating from Hayden High School a small scholarship and the members are working hard in their fundraising to achieve this goal. Also according to the nomination letter Rhonda has stated that, “We have a great community! I’m really busy, but I find time to volunteer. If everyone volunteered a little bit of their time, this would be an awesome place to live!” Virgil Thompson is a man of integrity and has worked throughout this community for years, according to his nomination letter. Fritz Behring

By Lana Jones How will the county continue to provide the services the public expects? That’s the question that Fritz Behring, the new Pinal County Manager, is trying to answer. “Our revenues are declining,” he said. He doesn’t see any indication that the situation is going to change anytime soon. “We’re probably never going to see the heyday again of the revenue coming in like it did in the last 10 years,” he said. Behring just started last November but he’s already working on saving money and making the county more

efficient. “We recently got the Board [of Supervisors] to approve a plan to scrap two different building projects that they had approved before I got here and redirect the funds to renovating the courtroom,” said Behring. The building projects had a budget of a little over $3 million, which will be redirected to the courthouse. The courthouse renovation will also get matching federal stimulus funds. In his first year here, Behring would like to see the County begin to look at things

differently. “Every organization has a culture and I truly believe that we have to change the organizational culture here,” he said. He said that County employees are probably having a hard time dealing with the big drop in revenue and that they have to learn to think differently. “My employees have to find ways to deliver services more efficiently,” he said. “I have to rely on my employees because they know better than I do.” Behring said that the Board of Supervisors and the public

County manager meeting challenges, sees brighter days ahead have to be willing to accept changes too. “We have to decide what is for government to do. The residents have to decide what they want,” he said. “The times have changed and government has to change with it.” Going forward, Behring said that the County has to make sure all of its operations are as efficient as possible. One way to do that, Behring suggested, is by evaluating the need to refill positions when people retire. “As people retire, that’s when we force ourselves to ask the

question: Do we need to refill that position?” he said. If the County can provide the same services by moving people around or changing job descriptions, why refill the position? Despite the challenges, Behring was positive about the future of Pinal County. “People have the right attitude to get through this thing and move forward,” he said. “There are brighter days ahead for us, it’s going to be a challenge to get through but we’ll get through it.” Behring has experience See Manager, Page 5

Mary Louise Quiroz reaches a milestone in life By Rosalind Padilla This week families have shared Valentines and chocolates, smelled the scent of roses and enjoyed a Valentine meal. One of my favorite Valentines recently reached the age of 90 and is being honored by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family and friends with a special Mass at noon Saturday, Feb 19, at the Infant of Prague Catholic Church and a reception/dinner immediately following at Leo Terrill Hall. Mary Louise Quiroz falls into the category of a Copper Basin Pioneer not because of her age but because she offered so much to the communities where she grew up and raised her family.

Mary has worn many hats and is called Mary, “Licha” or as in our house hold we all call her Nana because she raised our son, Danny as if he were her grandson. Maria Louisa “Licha” Duarte Quiroz was born January, 14, 1921 in Phoenix where the Manuel and Delphina Duarte family lived and at that time included Arturo, Manuel, Marina all three deceased at an early age, Chema, Jose, and Maria Luisa. The family moved to Sonora where brother Mike was born. Mary’s father Manuel died from complications due to a mining accident at the Ray Mines. In the 1930’s Delphina married Pedro Chavez and from that union Alex and Eva

were born. After the death of her Dad and stepfather Licha’s Mom worked hard to keep her five children fed and clothed. It was a difficult and challenging job but she did it by selling tamales, doing laundry and making lunches for the miners and doing other odd jobs to support her family. She survived raising five children as a single mom. This strong willed woman instilled in her children the desire to succeed while keeping the family intact. Licha loved sports, reading, music, and clothes as is evident from family photos from her youth. She was on the Ray High School Championship volley ball team in 1936 and other school athletic teams. She shared with her children memories of sitting with her friends by the Sonora Town Jail with Mr. Jordan, the town sheriff, Mr. Ganem and Mr. Ferris who gave impromptu concerts for them. She said the young crowd would sit and just listen and be entertained for hours. Licha was the manager of Juarez Theatre for many years, responsible for hiring many Sonora kids looking for part time work while her brother Chema worked at the Paris Café, Mike drove a freight truck and Eva worked at a drug store before working at the post Office in Sonora and later as Post master in Kearny. Licha graduated from Ray High School in 1941 and married Francisco (Frank) Moreno Quiroz on June 27 of that year, a marriage of 61 years. Licha and Frank raised five children Frankie Turkey, Yolanda, Bobby, Tommy and Anna Maria in Sonora later moving to Kearny. Tommy provided the research he did on the extended family dating back to the mid 1800’s most of which I could not use at this time how ever he has memories of the great smells emanating from the homes and restaurants of Sonora. Licha and her Mom would start out early in the morning making the daily batch of tortillas, letting the tortilla dough balls rest while beans and salsa were being prepared.

Their tamales were yummy and what great menudo. The birth of their fifth child, Anna Maria, was a traumatic moment for this young family because Anna had to have abdominal surgery immediately at birth. Along with the trauma of surgery Anna was also diagnosed as a Downs except in those days this syndrome was called Mongolism and doctors in the 50s always suggested institutions Licha and Frank would have no part of that. As Anna grew up as a happy loving child in the protective community of Sonora there were many struggles. School was not a choice so when Anna reached school age she had to ride a bread truck daily to Florence. This was a very hard ordeal for her and the rest of the family. Shortly after the family moved to Kearny, Anna enrolled at the Hayden Primary school where she was one of my students in 1968 in the days before Special Ed was a word in the field of education. Licha was in the fore front of young parents in Arizona fighting for a chance for their children to attend school. The answer was the same-“we do not accept those kind of kids.” Licha worked hard and endlessly lobbying on all fronts for a chance of education for her daughter. All over Arizona she was known as the “Tamale Lady” because she wined and dined legislators and other top officials with tamale dinners as they heard the plight of these young children who wanted to be in school just like every one else in Northeastern Pinal County. She was not the only parent that needed help in Arizona and these young parents developed a bond as they struggled to work for this chance to get schools started. Money was scarce and the local parents had to work hard all year to raise matching funds to keep their children in the educational program. That was in 1968 and guess what It seems that 43 years later budgets are being cut and students eliminated from programs and we are back

to square one. Today all children are promised a free and equal education and this is possible by the hard work of parents in the 1950s and 60s who were driving their children to Tucson or Phoenix weekly for physical and speech therapy. August 26, 1969 Mary C O’Brien the Pinal County School Superintendent announced at a tamale dinner in Kearny that the federal grant had been awarded to Kearny to cover the area from Superior to Oracle. It was the first concept of this type in Arizona and it worked. Besides all the jobs Mary had in Sonora and Kearny and raising a family she was very active in Church and community activities which included Women’s Club, Catholic Church Women’s group, State

Georgie Digs By Georgie Wood (ggannwood@yahoo.com) The 1930 Census of Virden Village, Hidalgo County, New Mexico listed Mexico-born John W. Holden, a 35 year old farmer, his wife, Edith, and their five Arizona-born children. The Holdens acquired Roy McClure’s property along Aravaipa Creek, and I was told by a family member that when they moved there about 1939. Of their nine living children, the seven youngest with them were Wesley, Dean, Loraine, Wilma,

Mary, George, and Joyce. The oldest two were Wayne and Ross. The adobe house on the property had a cellar where lots of homecanned fruit from the farm’s produce was stored, and at some period after the Aravaipa school closed in 1944, the Holdens had a house in Hayden while some of their children went to school there. I especially remember Loraine and Wilma who were close to my age. The 1930 Census of Thatcher, Graham County, Arizona listed Mexico-born Gilbert Richardson,

Come on down to the Church of the Good Shepherd Ray Hall, 508 Senator Chastain Street, in Kearny, and, show your community spirit, however you define it, by sharing your instruments, your voices, and, your participation in this informal, fun, festival of community music set for Saturday, Feb. 26, beginning at 5 p.m. The Nomads will be here, including Paul and Mary Lou Stark, who have entertained Kearny in years past. Hot dogs,

chili dogs, and cookies will be provided for all. A free-will offering will be accepted from those who wish to chime in with their two cents, or even more, and donate toward helping purchase instruments for the community chime choir. As a special treat, the Chime Choir will perform for those in attendance. a 38 year old farmer, his wife, Barbara, and their seven Arizona-born children, and in 1949, the Richardsons acquired the Holdens’ Aravaipa Creek property that was called Aravaipa Farms. I don’t remember meeting the Gilbert Richardsons, and it was only recently when I was told that Gilbert Richardson had previously known John Holden and Burl Young who had also been born and raised in Mormon Colonies in Mexico. I do not belong to the Mormon Church, but I find the history of the early Mormon colonization in Mexico very interesting. In 1957, Willis Ouillette, who had been a contractor in Tucson, bought the smaller property across the creek from the Aravaipa Farms that was called Stumble Inn Ranch. I wish I knew the early history of that property where I understand numerous people had previously lived at different times. Willis and his wife, Dorothy, had the children Bill, Frances, Mike, and Marie, and the family lived in a small house that was located not far above the creek level. After we bought a 1953 Ford farm tractor in 1959, we sold to Willis our 1933 F12 Farmall wheel tractor, and he, who was a carpenter, did lots of improvements to the property.

In 1955, Jimmy Gardner sold his property on the south side of the creek, just downstream of the Aravaipa Farms, to A.N. “Newt” Wallace of Mammoth. Newt was an equipment operator at Magma Copper Company at San Manuel after having been an equipment operator for the Arizona State Highway Department, starting about 1932 in Florence and 1937 in the Mammoth area. Newt and his wife, Katherine, who had one son, Bob, continued to make their home in Mammoth while caring for their Aravaipa property which had many pecan trees. That is another place along the creek that I wish I knew the early history of, and where numerous people had previously lived at different times. Besides the Apsey, north of Painted Cave, which the Dave Millers had obtained from Joe Buzan in 1939, they had obtained the “Whitaker”, southwest of Brandenburg Mountain, where Les Whitaker, a Gila County Deputy, had a goat herd; also the nearby “Whitwright” property where Les Whitaker had another goat herd, with both herds run by others on shares. After the oldest Miller son, Ralph Mark Miller, married Beverly Meade of Tucson in 1949, they

lived at the Whitaker for a while, and Ralph was kept busy between all the Miller properties where they ran cattle. It was when Ralph and Beverly were staying in the Holy Joe cabin when Cliff and I had some good Canasta card games with them. In 1953, their first child, and only

boy, was born to them, then came Lilah, Beatrice, and Kitty. It was in 1956 when the Ralph Miller family had a home in Tucson where their kids were to go to school, but that didn’t mean the end of their involvement along Aravaipa Creek and surrounding country.

Lobo diamond action to start

By Nolberto Waddell With the disappointing basketball seasons a long gone memory, the Lobo athletes are now busy getting ready to bring more recognition to the storied softball and baseball programs of Hayden High School. The Lobo softball coaches are busy trying to figure out how to replace all the lost power at the batting box that came from the departed seniors. This year’s team will rely on what is called the short game, producing runs from bunts, steals and base hits. The cupboards were not left bare with the seniors’ departures; there are still some very good softball players returning the only difference being that the long ball, homeruns and long triples, will not be as abundant as last year. Returning players Sonya Amado, Kalyn Gaona, Selina Arbizo, Stephanie Chiquete, and Melissa Islava along with a good group of underclass players will lead to another great season of Lobo softball with the brunt of the pressure falling on the shoulders or arm of pitcher Demitria Boltarez. Her success in the pitching circle will determine the success of the Lobo softball team. Demitria is not the only one who can toss the softball; she will get help from Selina Arbizo and Marlisse Perez and a few underclass players. On defense, the Lobos return three infield starters from last year with Sonya Amado returning to her

catching duties and the other two players, Selina Arbizo and Alexis Felix returning to the infield. First base is the only spot that the coaches will have a tough time filling but there are a lot of players that could step up and claim the position. In the outfield, Kalyn Gaona will return to gobble up any ball hit to the center of the field and Stephanie Chiquete fighting to keep her starting position in left field. The right field position is still up in the air as who will get the starting nod. No player is assured a starting position, the starting spots are not set in stone and there are quite a few players that can make an impact and win a starting spot, players like Melissa Islava, Stephanie Brusuelas, Jena Cruz, Devan Estrada, Larryann Sampson, Yvonna Gonzales and many more young players who could get hot at the right time and claim a starting position. Many things could come up to change the outlook of the Lobo softball team, injuries, eligibility, unrest sitting on the bench but it all comes back on the Lobo pitchers. It is said that good pitching will always beat good hitting so the pressure is on for Demitria and Selina. How they respond will carry the Lobos in the early part of the season that will start this Saturday when the Lobos of Snowflake High School come to Lobo Field for a scrimmage starting at 11 a.m. The Lobo’s first

game of the regular season will be a road game at Baboquivari High School on Tuesday, March 1, and will travel to Safford High School on March 4 and 5 to play in the Safford Invitational Softball Tournament. Again, all the players mentioned above are not guaranteed playing time, they have to earn that time with their showing on the practice field. Who knows, a young underclass player might arise and carry the team but if the returning players play to their ability the Lady Lobos will make another run at the state playoffs.

Baseball On the baseball diamond, I have not fully covered the Lobo baseball team relying on information from players I have talked too. The Lobos will not be as strong on the mound as last year but there are still enough arms that can help the Lobos. The returning players were good at the plate and should be just as good or better this year. On defense, it looks like all the positions are open and the showing and hustle in practice will lead to a starting position and there will be a lot of players playing multiple positions.

The Lobos will be good again this season and their scrappy play should take them to a return trip to the playoffs. The baseball season starts for the Lobo team this Saturday when the Lobos of Snowflake High School come to the Lobo Diamond for a scrimmage starting at 11 a.m. The regular season starts for the Lobos with a trip to Baboquivari High School to take on the Warrior baseball team on Tuesday, March 1, and will travel to Florence High School on March 2 through 5 to play in the Joe S. Padilla Invitational Baseball Tournament.

It should be an exciting season of diamond action for both the Lobo teams. I once heard a few elderly gentlemen talking about high school sports at a baseball tournament and the comment came out that anyone who knows high school sports knows about the proud tradition of Lobo excellence on the baseball and softball diamond. I do not want to put any more pressure on the young Lobo athletes but it’s up to you to carry on the proud tradition of Lobo athletics. Good luck to both teams on the upcoming season.

45 minutes and go back to their normal daily activities versus the significant recovery and downtime associated with traditional vein-stripping surgery. It is estimated that more than 40 percent of the population suffers from varicose veins. “Many consider varicose veins to be a cosmetic problem but many suffer the medical complications such as leg pain, blood clots, and leg ulcers which occur with varicose veins,” said Dr. Dana Miller, General Surgeon.

Peter Peifer, PA-C, MS and member of the American College of Phlebology, states, “Many patients within our region suffer from this painful condition and we are pleased to offer treatment locally so patients won’t have to travel long distances to see a varicose vein specialist. We are here to help you.” Dr. Mark Sundell, Radiologist and Mark Coles, Registered Vascular Ultra Sound Technologist, will also be part of the team utilizing state-ofthe-art ultra sound equipment to

identify the problem veins. Consultations are free and the CV Laser Vein Center is now taking appointments for February. Other mining news Rosemont Copper, the owner of the proposed mine in the Santa Rita Mountains south of Tucson, has been accused of sending misleading promotional letters to about 20,000 Tucson residents, the Arizona Daily Star reported. The letters did not appear to come from Rosemont Copper. The letters were apparently signed by local

neighborhood supporters of the mine. The people whose names appear on the letters do support the mine and agreed to have their names used. However, Rosemont sent the letters and has been criticized for

using fake signatures. The letter also included a brochure about Rosemont and a postage-paid response card. Rosemont reported receiving over 4000 responses in support of the mine as a result of the letter.

thinking more this summer, specifically Labor Day, in Utah. She is really looking forward to planning all of it, yet I have an aunt who is quite sick with Leukemia and rightly so, my mother is spending a large amount of time caring for her. I understand and appreciate this completely. OK. So here I am in late February trying to plan my wedding which is…count it… less than six months away in a different state. I am having a full-fledged SPAZ attack! Full-Fledged! This isn’t enough time. NOT ENOUGH! Then I am looking at Martha Stewart’s planning manual and really freaking out thinking things like ‘I have to plan gifts to give to my guests? Aren’t they giving me gifts? What?’ or ‘Is it really that bad if I want a theme of four colors?’ or ‘Oh My God, I don’t even know what I want my 17th dance song to be!’ or ‘What food is appropriate for cocktail hour?’ Yes, I am dying. I really enjoy the part of the planner where it says Fifteen to Nine Months Before: Start your budget, determine your wedding party, settle on a head count, book your venue… blah. AAAAAAAHHH! I have six months! Having just one ounce of help on one thing would be WAY MEGA AWESOME! Now consider that flowers are such a huge part of any wedding ceremony and reception. You need to have your bouquet, your bridesmaids bouquet, flower girl’s (duh) basket of petals, boutonnières for the groom and his groomsmen, corsages for your mother and his mother and every other woman in [my] ridiculously extensive family, boutonnieres for the men in the families, some kind of flower thing for your ushers, flowers for the ceremony, flowers for the aisle…and this is just the ceremony. I am going to die. For the reception you further need decorative flowers and way too many centerpieces. I am going to die further. If any of you have found yourself in this place, here is where you need to find someone like Bernadette Muñoz-Petros, of A Day of Elegance. Once she enters the picture, Bernadette acts as your antidote to insanity and suicidal rationing. She offers a full service floral situation See Flowers, Page 8

He took care of the issue relieving so much stress from the family and according to the letter, he would not take any money and was glad he had the material to help in this matter. Virgil is involved in so much of this community and I would like for this community to show our appreciation to him by electing him Citizen of the Year, the letter said. appreciated and few people understand the depth of her contribution. The amount of food she has cooked over the years for community projects won her the title of ‘Tamale Lady” and as one of the young girls growing up on the 400 block of Fairhaven called her, the ‘Apron Lady”. Many of us are in debt to her for with out her lobbying for schools in this area we would not have had the jobs we held for so many years. She was never too busy to stop what she was doing when our son, Danny, would say ‘Nana play baseball with me’ or when he came home from school “Nana what do you have to eat” and she would make him whatever he asked for. For those simple acts of love she is definitely my Valentine and her family feels the same. The Kearny Little League Board was cited for all the improvements to the park including the remodeling of the concession stand, and the addition of a restroom and office. Garage sales were held to purchase a new score board and a new electrical service panel to the concession stand was installed. Also light poles, restrooms (in and out) were painted, new roofs were installed on the restrooms and on one dugout. A new backstop was installed, fencing was repaired and new gates were added, along with new sidewalks. Major dirt work was completed and trees were planted between the parking lots and the field. Other improvements included new grass seed, a commercial refrigerator/freezer and a steam table. The nomination letter stated that during the playing season, you could find a board member either coaching a team, umpiring a game, preparing the field, or serving food from the concession stand. This board worked very hard to acquire funding and put in many man hours to complete these projects. “One person would not take the credit and there were many,” according to the letter, which also stated that “Haven’t seen the park in such beautiful appearance and many boys and girls are and will benefit from all the service.” (This nomination was turned down because the rules for COY does not include an area

Continued from Page 1 managing through difficult times. His most recent position was with Clay County, Florida. He took that position in 2005, when Clay County was under investigation by state and federal law enforcement. His move from Florida to Arizona was motivated by his appreciation of the southwest and the opportunity to improve Pinal County. “They’ve already done a lot to improve the organization over the last several years but there’s still plenty of work to do. That’s true with any organization,” said Behring. His appreciation of the southwest is partially due to the weather, but he said the best thing about Arizona is the people.

“I like the attitude of the people here in the west. The people are very genuine, nononsense,” he said. Behring is a native of South Dakota. He attended the University of South Dakota and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and a Master’s of Public Administration degree. He served on the South Dakota Board of Regents of Higher Education by the governor and an advisory board for the National Institute for Justice. Behring looks forward to more bicycling and exercising now that he’s moved away from the oppressive Florida humidity. grants to grass roots charities in Arizona. Paula Cullison, President and Founder of the Arizona Women’s Partnership, Inc. recently announced the 2011 grant recipients; and said, “We are proud to note that the Arizona Women’s Partnership, Inc. has awarded over $160,000 in grants since 2003 to more than 40 grass roots charities that assist underserved women and / or youth at risk; many of the non-profits are multiple year AZWP grant recipients.” Among the 19 grassroots organizations selected to receive an AZWP grant is Adelante Juntos Coalition. The grant will be used to support the further development of youth programming like the Big Sisters/Brothers mentoring program, and the CyberCafe after school activities. “Without a supportive, positive environment that provides safe alternatives; our tweens, teens and young adults will find it easier to turn to alcohol and drugs for socialization, recreation and dealing with conflict and stress,” said AJC Director Betty Chavez. She added that what is desperately needed in the Tri-Community is a recreational/teen center. This award from AZWP is a strong endorsement

for AJC youth programs that could persuade other potential donors to invest in providing for our rural kids. Chavez continues to seek and apply for grants and other funding streams that would enable AJC to re-open Avenue B School as a Center of Excellence that would include a teen ‘hotspot’ for the positive growth and development; as well as recreational needs of young people in the TriCommunity. Chavez stated that AZWP has been honored with gubernatorial and mayoral proclamations for their achievements; while Lori Walk, AZWP-Vice President added, “We are fortunate to have received significant contributions from the Violet M. Johnson Family Foundation and local businesses which will help us continue our mission.” The amount that AZWP distributes each year (approximately $30,000) depends upon the success of the popular 10th annual Wine, Women & Jazz FUNdraiser which will be held on Saturday, April 30, (4 - 6:30 p.m.) at the Arizona Culinary Institute, 10585 North 116th Street in Scottsdale. Attendees will enjoy gourmet appetizers, fine wines, delicious desserts and great jazz, along with a boutique silent auction. “Tickets are still only $55 for this fun foodie event,” noted Dawn Melvin, AZWP 2011 Grants Chair. Flowers

Continued from Page 4 that literally is a dream come true to a bride in need. I walked into her shop and there were two immediate things that I noticed: (a) it smelled divine, absolutely divine and (b) Bernadette has one of the most positive and welcoming countenances I have ever encountered. We got to talking about what I was thinking about for my wedding and the more she spilled, the more I liked her. She started explaining to me the variety of arrangements she can do, from lit pieces to modern beauty to classic style, and I was completely entranced and my mind wandered to what I wanted for my wedding. I really do feel bad that I had to interview her with so much “floral baggage” to bring to the table. I asked her what the advantage of hiring a florist for a wedding as opposed to doing it oneself would be, she laughed and simply replied, “Quality. While you might be able to purchase so beautiful flowers at say, Costco, what the florist brings to the table is the knowledge and experience to know how to pick flowers that will last longer and then keep them looking their best as long as possible.” Due to her training and experience, Bernadette knows how to make those roses really pop and then last 10-20 days past your actual wedding… so ha! You can send your centerpieces home as gifts.

Way Cool! She is willing to go to any supplier she needs to in order to find the best quality flower she can for your event. One supplier might have the best roses, but there might be a better place to get dahlias and then another place which has the best lilies. One of the things that I really enjoyed about Bernadette was that she seemed incredibly dedicated to doing what she needed to, to ensure that her customers were happy. “I go the extra mile because of my clients, if they aren’t actually family then they are like family to me, so naturally I am going to be there for them and do anything I can to make them happy,” she said. Ohhh, I like her! I asked her what her favorite event has been thus far and what she really enjoyed about working on large scale events like weddings and she gave a genuine, honest answer: “My first event was the coolest by far. I was nervous since it was my first, but the vision that the bride had made it so easy and we were able to create something whimsical and beautiful…the thing I love the most is the look on their face when they see everything for the first time – that is the absolute most rewarding thing about this job.” Bernadette is willing to work with any budget, large or small; for example, she has a recent event which had a budget of $500 for over 30 centerpieces, so she put in the time and effort to do the research so that she could get the most for their money and the end result was spectacular. It all really depends on what you want for your event. I like that Bernadette takes her cue from the wishes of the client…I definitely knew a few florists up in Utah who did not do this. I really love that Bernadette approaches the situation from the aspect that two heads are better than one and each has something unique to bring to the table equally. I was surprised when I asked what her area of coverage was, as she will literally go anywhere; she does multiple deliveries throughout Pinal County for which there are no destination fee, but she is willing to go anywhere, hence why she is heading to Blythe, California for an event in June. Cool beans. Beyond weddings, Bernadette has the ability to do any event from parties to Quinceañeras to graduations. The possibilities are endless as she specializes in large events. As a special offer to readers, Bernadette is offering a free tossing bouquet and boutonnière for the groom if you book your wedding party flowers with her. She is constantly offering different discounts, so be sure to check in frequently with her…she truly wants to make the process easy for her customers. A Day of Elegance is located at 343 Airport Road in Kearny and Bernadette can be reached at 520-3639543 for information about her products and services. Beyond being an artist, Bernadette is wonderful to work with and has a myriad of excellent ideas to bring to the table. She definitely calmed my wedding jitters.
