OBITUARY Deborah Martinez Deborah Martinez, 67, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019. Deborah was born on March 28, 1951 in Superior to parents, Joe and Lucy Vindiola. She married David Martinez in February of 1970. They have shared 49 years of marriage. She is survived by her parents; brother, Joey; husband; and two children, daughter, Vanessa and son, Jody. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother to three grandkids, Christian, Nico and Dominic. There will be a celebration of her life on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 11 a.m. at Saint Francis Catholic Church, 490 Main Street Superior, AZ 85173.

Tale of two halves: Superior plays ‘best’ in first half, ‘couldn’t finish’ in second By Andrew Luberda Superior Sun It doesn’t matter which sport, defense typically wins championships, which is why the No. 10-seed Superior boys’ basketball team entered the 1A State Championship Tournament with confidence – consistent defense gave the Panthers a chance in almost every game this season – and a chance to make history. Against No. 7 Arete Prep in the opening round of the state tournament last Friday, the Panthers held the Chargers to a measly nine first-half points, taking a 19 – 9 lead to locker room at halftime. “We played great defense in the first half, probably the best we have played all year,” Superior head coach Ryan
Palmer told the Superior Sun. “This group worked hard. They hustled, rebounded well, and played lock-down defense.” While the Panthers’ defense had been consistent, their offense had been just the opposite this season, as evidenced by the Chargers outscoring Superior 39 – 22 in the second half, which led to a come-from-behind 48 – 41 victory. Arete Prep more than doubled its first-half point total in the third quarter alone, putting up 22 points while limiting Superior to just six. The Chargers started hitting their perimeter shots in the third quarter, and once they grabbed the lead, they took the air out the ball and forced the Panthers to change their defense. “Our struggles were on the offensive end,” Palmer said
about the most significant challenge for his team this season. “Arete Prep started to heat up from deep. We did not do a great job communicating off the ball screens and their shooters hit some key shots. “Once Arete Prep took the lead they started to run a stall offense, which forced us to defend out and left us even more vulnerable. We had our chances but couldn’t finish.” The Panthers will have more chances in the future with three of their four leading scorers returning next season – Dominic Hernandez (So), Adam Navarrette (So), and Sammy Lopez (Jr). “We had a couple great senior leaders, but the majority of our team were underclassmen,” Palmer said. “The future is bright for Superior basketball.”

ast week I was honored to have represented our community in London. The trip was a whirl-wind adventure crammed into just a few short days. London is a beautiful city and if I could describe it quickly, it is like being in the capital of the world. New architecture stands next to buildings that are centuries old and many nationalities are represented there in the

business world. The trip itinerary was built around attending the Lord Mayor of London Mansion House event with the Worshipful Company of Gardeners. These trade groups, or what is referred to as Livery Companies, are similar to our trade associations. This event was seeped in British traditions and required full formal wear, along with many unique ceremonies such a sharing of the “Loving Cup” which is a formal toasting tradition. The event was hosted in the Lord Mayor’s Mansion house and the only time the public is allowed to enter the building is if you are invited to attend one of these events. We were also able to tour the Linnean Society, which is the oldest biological plant society in the world. The Linnean Society has preserved the biological specimens of Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus whose botanical, zoological, and library collections they have been keeping since 1829. The invitation to these two events came from Sy Sohlmer, who served as the Executive Director of the Boyce Thompson Arboretum. These relationships all have a direct connection to help support the preservation and growth of the Boyce Thompson

Promoting Superior and the Copper Corridor to the United Kingdom office of Trade, Mining and Energy was another key meeting that I attended during my time in London. This round table session allowed us to share synergies and consider potential collaborations to attract UK companies to Superior. The Arizona office of Tourism has a staff in London who help to promote Arizona to the UK traveler; this organization does a great job promoting Arizona and they were able to showcase many of the great promotions they have built for Arizona. We were able to share with them all of the unique places to visit here in Superior and the Copper Corridor. I am looking forward to hosting them when they visit Arizona later this year. Before I left last week, the Town Council, the Superior Unified School District Governing Board, Superior Chamber of Commerce and Rebuild Superior Inc. all signed community, education and economic development agreements with Resolution Copper/Rio Tinto. These agreements were all multi-year agreements that will help our community to develop several projects including a new multi-generational center, education services and support many further endeavors to improve our local economy. I was able to meet with top officials at the Rio Tinto headquarters in London to thank them for their investments in our community, and discuss the ongoing progress of the project
and permitting. This trip would not have been such a huge success if it were not for the support and guidance of the Arizona Commerce Authority and Arizona Office of Tourism. Their staff Continued on page 10

Casa of Pinal County: Being the Voice for The Child FLORENCE, AZ - Across the nation Americans will be celebrating Black History Month in February. And CASA of Pinal County recognizes the positive difference that our advocates of color have made to children in the foster care system. Sisters Bridgette Gibson and Deborah Hollman of Coolidge are two residents who may never be mentioned years from now in any history books, but they are making a tremendous difference in the lives of abused or neglected children in the foster care system. These children have already faced tough situations, and entering the foster care system can be traumatic. When a child is placed in a culturally different setting, it is even more challenging. They aren’t just removed from their homes but removed from their schools, community, place of worship, etc. The overall wellness of every child is important to CASA advocates. Bridgette and Deborah have volunteered with CASA together for nine years. Both have served as exceptional resources in this area by sharing their life
experiences and cultural knowledge. They have bridged the gap to help staff and volunteers learn better ways to provide quality care for children of color. In Arizona, African American children are over represented in the state’s foster care system. Statewide, 5 percent of the child population is African American, but 15.4 percent of the children removed from their homes are African American. There is no evidence that African American children are abused or neglected at higher rates compared to children of other races and ethnicities. It is important that the CASA volunteer pool reflect the children who are under served. Unfortunately, only 4 percent of the more than 1,000 volunteers in Arizona are African American. CASA volunteers are specifically trained to advocate for children in foster care. Volunteer advocates get to know the child and speak to everyone involved in the child’s life, including their family members, teachers, doctors, lawyers, social workers and others. The information they gather and their recommendations help the court
overseeing the cases make informed decisions. CASA volunteers commit to a child until the case is closed and the child is in a safe, permanent home. CASA advocates must be sensitive to cultural differences and help foster parents work through the issues that child is facing by being positive role models for children in care. We all like to think we’re color blind, but the reality is unless you’ve walked in the shoes of someone who has faced discrimination or not fitting in, you really don’t understand the challenges a child of color experiences who has been uprooted and placed in a strange setting. And so, as we celebrate the many faces of history like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr. during this special month, let us not forget the names of CASA Advocates Bridgette Gibson and Deborah Hollman. For these selfless, caring volunteers are making history of their own by creating a safe environment for children of color. They are for the child.
