Three to vie for Pioneer Days Queen

By Vicki Clark Three young ladies have come forward to compete for Pioneer Days Queen titles this year. A Queen and Junior Queen will be crowned. So who will they be? This will depend on the efforts of the contestants and your help. When the Queen competition first began, the winner was named only on the amount of money raised by the contestant. Over the years, the rules have changed and the contestants now have the opportunity to compete in a fashion show and speech contest, based on a point system. Points are awarded in each category along with extra points for ticket sales, prompt recording of sales and responsibility.

The contestants have already began spreading out over the Copper Basin area, and points beyond, selling chances to win one of three prizes. First winner will be awarded $500, second place is $250 and the third place is $150. Each Queen contestant also receives a percentage of the amount earned. Tickets are $1 a chance and everyone is encouraged to support the efforts of these young ladies. Running for the title of Queen or Jr. Queen this year are Stephanie Lomeli, Maranda Petty and Kymberly Terry. Stephanie is the daughter of Ruth Lomeli and Christopher Alvarado of Kearny and is seeking the Jr. Queen crown. She is 13 and is an eighth grader at Kearny Elementary

where she’s an honor roll student. Her other school activities include band, volleyball and track and she was recognized in December for outstanding citizenship. She also sings and plays flute with her church choir at Infant Jesus of Prague Parish in Kearny. In her spare time Stephanie likes to read, write, sing, dance, play her flute, go for walks and listen to music. She also likes to play games with her family. Her plans for the future include going to college to pursue her love for writing. Stephanie said she decided to join the Queen race for the fun and the competition. Maranda, who is seeking the Queen’s title, is 15 and a sophomore at Ray High

School. She is the daughter of Nancy Petty of Kearny and Robert Petty. She is active in ROTC and an honor roll student. She is also active in the community where she has rang the bell for the Salvation Army Kettle at Christmas time, cleaned houses for the elderly through her church, participated in canned food drives and helped to wrap gifts for Toys for Tots. Maranda’s hobbies include writing, singing and listening to music. She also likes hanging out with friends, swimming, tubing, and bike riding. When not doing any of the above she enjoys playing games such as basketball and softball. In addition she likes card, board and puzzle games. After high school Maranda

would like to go to college and is currently considering studying the law where she could pursue a career either as a probation officer or a lawyer. She is also interested in a business degree that could possibly lead to a position in a high school office, and/or psychology where she could work with teens. She decided to run for queen this year because she likes to do things with the town, help out when she and get noticed in good ways. Kymberly, also a Queen candidate, is 15, and the daughter of Pam and Jason Collins of Kearny. She is a sophomore at Hayden High School where she plays basketball and softball. She enjoys riding and

hanging out with her friends, mud bogging and playing basketball. Kymberly would like to attend ASU after high school to study to become a paramedic. She then would like to live in Mesa where she would be on call 24/7. She said she wanted to run for Pioneer Day Queen because she made her grandma proud and she wants to make her even more proud. “Even though she’s not here, she will be looking down and see, be happy that I’m doing this for her,” Kymberly said. She added that she also thinks it would be an awesome experience. She has lived in Kearny since she was little and would love to represent the town. “It’s small, but with a lot to do,” she said.

Palmer and Cude earn co-champion titles in Ray District Spelling Bee Kenneth Palmer and Jonah Cude were declared CoChampions in the 2010-11 Ray District Spelling Bee competition held Jan. 25 in the Ray District Auditorium. Both spellers rose to the occasion displaying tremendous focus to correctly spell several taxing words throughout the championship rounds. Words such as abracadabra, grammarian, inoculate, aborigine and effervescent were on the spelling bee menu for the day. Initially, Cude, a sixth grader, was declared champion for

the second consecutive year in round 12 when he correctly spelled his word after a Palmer misspell. However, Cude had to be given an additional word to spell “succinct” which he misspelled. Palmer then led off round 13 by correctly spelling a new word, and with a Cude misspell, Palmer then spelled “impudent” correctly and was declared champion. Later that afternoon, it was discovered that each speller should have been given the misspelled word first to spell correctly then given a final new word

to spell before being declared champion. Ray officials, obviously distraught by the technical oversight, declared both young men co-champions based upon their competitive spirit and understanding character. Both spellers will compete in the Pinal County Bee on Friday. Cude, who entered the competition as the reigning spelling champ from last year, said the competition was tougher this year which should make him stronger. “My heart was racing and I was nervous at times,” he

said, “but when spelling a tough word, I would just look down and calmly spell it out in sections in my mind.” Palmer likewise, used mental strategies. “I would just close my mind, picture the word and then spell it out,” Palmer said. Palmer, a seventh grader, advances to his first county competition and said he is happy to make it. “Last year I misspelled my word in the very first round and I wasn’t real happy about that, my goal this week is to finish in the top three,” Palmer

said.

Cude said last year’s competition will help him be better prepared for the county competition again. “Last year, I got real nervous, but this year I know what’s coming so I’m more confident. My goal is to finish in the top three and go to state.” Finishing third in the competition was Andi Tomerlin, a sixth grader, who correctly spelled “Kanji.” Tomerlin, will also advance to compete in the county competition with Palmer and Cude. Tomberlin said she

is studying and practicing harder words with her parents in preparation for Friday’s competition. “Spelling in front of crowds is sometimes nerve racking, and I just have to take a deep breath and pretend they aren’t there” Tomerlin said. In addition to our three contestants, the following fourth through sixth place finishers will also attend the competition as alternates: Jordan Baca, sixth grade first alternate; Ryan Amos, sixth See Bee, Page 4

Changes coming to Winkelman sewer rates

Super spellers ... Winners in the Ray District Spelling Bee are, from left, Kenneth Palmer, Jonah Cude, and Andi Tomerlin. The three will travel to Casa Grande to compete in the county bee later this month. (Rene Pacheco photo)

By Taylor Sheaffer Ritter The Town of Winkelman moved forward with an agreement with the Arizona Water Company to gain water usage for the years so that they can correctly assess the amount by which sewer rates should be risen. Staff at town hall will be doing research to find the appropriate amount based on the information they have received and following their findings the town council will pass the rate change during an upcoming town meeting. The rise in rates should be effective this coming July. During the town meeting, Monday, Feb. 7, HaydenWinkelman Superintendent Jeff Gregorich presented to the town council information about We-Tip, an anonymous crime tipping organization which guarantees a 100 percent anonymous tip line 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Gregorich initially sought out the program as an outlet for bullied students, yet due to

its success rate information is being presented to numerous councils in the area including Hayden and the area of Globe-Miami. For more information on We-Tip, see the corresponding article in the Copper Basin News. With this year’s CDBG grant, the Town of Winkelman is planning on building a new community center on the Old Mine Mill site on Quarelli Street which was donated by the Union to the town. The current building standing holds no historical significance and this being the case, the plan is to move forward with demolition of the standing building and build fresh on the lot. Several public hearings have been held on the topic and the town council is currently deciding their course of action. The current plan is to design and build the new community center using green technology and recycling and reusing whatever materials See Winkelman, Page 4

Letter to the Editor:

Pioneer Days’ theme explained Editor, Copper Basin News: There seems to be a misunderstanding about the theme for this year’s Pioneer Days. Every year the committee selects a theme which makes it easier for a T-shirt design, parade float designs or even decorations. This year after much consideration the theme, “Dia de los Pioneros 18462011,” was selected and means Day of the Pioneer. Stories of Pioneer families will be featured and the design for the shirts has been submitted to the printer. Floats in the parade can feature prospectors, Indians, cowboys, cavalry troops, anything that fits the theme, the years stated above and covers the whole Copper Basin area. The word Pioneros is pronounced pea-o-naros. In no way are we changing the Pioneer Days format. Look at former t-shirts and compare themes. After 51 years it is hard to find a theme that fits that has not already been used. Sorry for the confusion and thanks to those who asked “what in the world do you think you are doing.” /s/ Rosalind Padilla Pioneer Days Chairperson

Warm recollections of Valentine’s Day, past and present a hallmark of recent luncheon By Cindy Tracy Memories were on the minds of attendees at the Hayden Senior Center’s Valentine Lunch on February 11. In between winning a lot of great prizes at the annual get together, people recounted heartfelt recollections of things that had happened during their lives on Valentine’s Day. Eileen French shared a gentle tribute to her marriage to husband Dale Vaughan. She said her Valentine’s Day story is an “every day” story, just like Christmas and New Year’s. “We’ve known each other since 1968. We both lost our spouses,” she said. The couple has gone through surgeries, taking on the care of each other by turns. “It seems as though one gets well and the other

one takes care of the other, so every day is almost like Valentine’s Day in our house because we both love each other so much,” French said. Norma Cardenas said she was going to be celebrating her 39th wedding on March 19. “We’ve got two beautiful daughters, six grandchildren and Valentine’s is all about love,” she said. “Love your husband, love your family and I love them very much.” Betty Hennum said that her Valentine story is that her oldest daughter was born on February 13, 1952. “Which was before Valentine’s Day,” she said, “but she was our Valentine.” Having attended most of the center’s Valentine lunches, Manual Aleman had a pleasant memory to share. He had won a prize in one of the raffles last year,

he recalled. While these memories were shared only with the newspaper in interviews, a highlight of the event itself was the gathering and reading out loud of anonymous Valentine’s Day stories. “My current husband in high school sent me a Valentine through the yearbook club,” one of the little written notes humorously recounted. “Everybody was shocked that I got one!” Another note writer recalled her husband’s letters from Vietnam. “I received them on Valentine’s Day,” she said. Someone else shared that her husband proposed marriage on February 14, 1946 with the gift of a locket. He could not afford an engagement ring, she wrote. Some notes referred to a different

Continued from Page 1 possible from the current building. While the planning of this project is in its initial stages, the hope is that the new community center will be used for parties, baby/ bridal showers, events and luncheons, along with finding a use as a venue for children’s activities and community events. For more information on the sewer rate increase, We-Tip or the planned community center, please contact Town Hall of Winkelman at 356-7854.

Georgie Digs By Georgie Wood (ggannwood@yahoo.com) According to the 1920 Census of Cherryville, Socorro County, New Mexico, Texas-born Alvin Henderson was manager of a cattle ranch there before he became the owner of the McGee property across Aravaipa

Creek from Mining Mountain in 1929. The 1930 Census of those living along Aravaipa Creek listed “Alvy” Henderson as a 47 year-old farmer on a truck farm with his 34 year-old wife “Mae” and their boarder, Jacob Sweeney, who was listed as a teacher in a public school. Jacob Sweeney had

Ray Junior ‘Cats complete undefeated season, win eighth grade championship

The current team of Ray eighth graders extended their winning streak to 22 straight games, including last year’s undefeated season, and, the seventh grade tournament championship. The 2011 Junior ‘Cats have won 10 straight, including the tournament championship, last Saturday, in San Carlos. The last game of the season proved to be the most difficult, with the ‘Cats squeaking by the San Carlos Braves, 34-28. San Carlos played very well, surprising the cats, who found themselves trailing, 14-11, at halftime. The ‘Cats fought back, to take their first lead of the game, at 25-21, at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter was a struggle, with Destry Yocum fouling out, and, another starter with four fouls. Seth Harmon, point guard for the ‘Cats, saved his team from their first defeat with his ability to control the ball under tremendous defensive pressure by the Braves, and, also, contributing 14 points in the scoring column. Jacob Pace, who made two critical baskets, and, a free throw in the closing seconds, chipped in 9 points. Robbin Newman had 7 points, and, numerous steals. Destry Yocum had 4 points In a first round game, the ‘Cats beat Globe 55-23. Destry Yocum scored 16 points; Jacob Pace, 11; Seth Gaston, 14; Robbin Newman, 3; and, Demitri Breeden, 3. Other Cats players who contributed to the team success, and, while not necessarily being high scorers, are important and deserve recognition, are: Tristin Gantt, Douglas McPeak, Ramon Marinez, Roy White, Tony Palmas and Hunter Schiebe. Thanks to these team members’ hard work in practice sessions, the ‘Cats really shone on court. The last ingredient for success is fan support, which has been great all season, and, is appreciated by all.

Alvy’s wife, who had been listed as “May” in the 1910 Census of Otero County, New Mexico when she was 15 years old and the oldest of the George Waldrip children, was a sister to Vaughn Waldrip who herded goats for Abe White, and a sister to Edna Lacey, wife of Henry Lacey who lived downstream on the Aravaipa property that Jimmy Gardner of Tiger would obtain. After Henry Towner was killed at the Apsey in 1937, Henry Towner’s brother, Joe Towner, moved in with the Hendersons and then moved with the Hendersons to Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico after the Hendersons sold their “Mountcrest Ranch” to a Mr. Robson. I don’t remember Mr. Robson, or him living there, but Ray Minkler, who helped us put in our new cattle scale in 1951, stayed there with his wife, Goldie, and their three young daughters, and when Denard and Grace Brandt stayed there. CEO, and Randall Boberg, CVRMC Imaging Director, spoke at the beginning of the event. Afterwards the public had the opportunity to tour the new equipment. Speaking later in the evening, Boberg explained how the equipment came to be placed in the clinic. He said that Neal Jensen had come to him and said, “We would like to put x-ray equipment into the Kearny Clinic,” Boberg said. He said there had been an old piece of equipment in the clinic that was not functioning. “So we took a look at what we needed to do and we were able to remove the old equipment and purchase a new piece for the Kearny Clinic.” This means that now people in Kearny and other nearby communities do not have to go anywhere to get x-rays. “Yes,” said Boberg, “the people in Kearny always would have to go to other places before, either to the hospital in Globe, or down to the Valley or to Tucson.” Kristen Polenz, who is the Imaging Resources Informatics Coordinator for Cobre Valley, was a part of the team that helped put all this together, she said, for the people of Kearny and “Dudleyville, Mammoth, everybody in the area.” She pointed out that people don’t have to be seen at the Kearny clinic to have their x-rays done there. Anyone who has a referring physician can have their x-rays done there, wherever they come from. The equipment has been fully functional for approximately two months, she said. “This is our official grand opening,” she added. “We’ve been using it and it’s been great.” Boberg gave some details of the way the new equipment functioned. “The key component for this equipment was also adding the computer radiography,” he said. “When they had an x-ray here before, the radiologist would have to be here in order to read it, or they would have to courier

the photos up to another place where the radiologist could read it. With computer radiography we’re now able to send the images over a high speed secured network so the radiologist can view the images from here up at the hospital within five minutes.” Once the images are read at Cobre Valley, a report can be immediately faxed to the patient’s physician in any location. A physician who is on site at the Kearny Clinic can read the images immediately. “We just want to remind people that anybody can come in,” Polenz said. “You can get your referral from your doctor in Tucson, your doctor in Phoenix, wherever. Bring it to us and we can get your x-rays done right here so you don’t have to go back.” Neal Jensen said that Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center was very excited to be able to bring x-ray services to the Kearny area. “It’s a great opportunity for us as a regional hospital to serve the needs of the communities that we represent,” he said.
