LETTER TO THE EDITOR From Family First: A Powder of Magic New Year’s Day up in the high desert brought us a beautiful snowy wonderland! Clear, cold, and fresh air was there to compliment the event. Growing up back east in a small town in Ohio, I cannot count the times I have woken up to cold wintery mornings! Each time though it amazes me, I am awe struck by the beauty of it all, how does God do that? Every night that it gets cold enough, my granddaughter is messaging on the phone; did it snow? Even though she was born and raised here in the Arizona desert, she is fascinated by the snow! As soon as she can talk her mom and dad into it, she and her brother are on their way up to grandma and grandpa’s to play in the snow. The top layer of the snow this time was a light powdery dust and

the first thing she did was throw the snow in the air to watch it sparkle in the sunlight! Powder on the top, nice packing snow underneath, the perfect combination for winter fun. From snowmen, snow ball fights, to sliding down the hill in saucer sleds and finally snow angels to cap off the day! Some soup and hot chocolate with the last of the Christmas cookies and the day is done. As the family was all leaving, the car was loaded and everyone was in the car except my granddaughter. She was off by herself, the snow, a powder of magic again floating in the air, this time I swear it stopped for a few moments midair so my granddaughter could save the day, God does that sometimes you know! As each New Year passes, we all reflect on the past year, the good, the not so good, while we resolve to do better in the next. I think the children know better than us

sometimes, just enjoy the day, take in the beauty and be amazed at what is in front of us! At Family First we thank God for a great year in 2018. We are expecting God to do great things this New Year 2019! We look to see the children in story time, to encourage the moms, dads and grandparents along with everyone who comes into our doors. We will stop a few moment to save the day! Our prayer for all is for a prosperous, healthy New Year. It will be the best ever as you have not experienced it yet. You never know what you will wake up to! God Bless, /s/ Frank and Clare Grochocki

Government shutdown affecting local communities

When you pick up this article and read it on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019 the United States Federal Government will have been partially shut down for 18 days. The shut down comes after Congress refused to fund the $5 million dollars for a border wall and border security with Mexico. To date this is the second longest shut down and if the Government remains shut down through Saturday, it will be the longest shut down since the Clinton Administration. This shut down is beginning to have some effects on local communities that use the services of Central Arizona Governments (CAG). The agency is the regional Council of Governments who administers federal funds from various departments such as the Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Transportation, Housing and Urban Development for the Gila and Pinal Counties and the incorporated communities in those counties. With the Government in partial shut down it has affected the the ability for those federal agencies to issue their reimbursements and funding. For CAG and the region, this means that the staff at CAG has been furloughed and are only working three days a week. Many local communities have projects at CAG for grant writing, which could impact meeting required deadlines. Member agencies of the CAG are looking into providing advance funding to the agency to help keep it afloat during the shut down. The City of Globe will be voting to advance funding to CAG this week. For the Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition, their housing program that is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture is partially on hold as USDA employees are on furlough and unable to process applications and checks for the projects. The current Food Hub Expansion project through

Oracle Union Church to begin new sermon series Have you wanted to know more about the Bible? If you have wanted to get a basic understanding of the scope of the Bible, perhaps a series of sermons that explore the major themes of the Bible through a book by book presentation can help you. In 2019, Pastor Ed Nelson of Oracle Union Church will develop a series of Sunday morning messages that will do that very thing. This series will begin with a look at the overall theme of Scripture on Jan. 6 and then begin with a sermon on Genesis on Jan. 13. From then on we will go book by book—with some

the Southern Gila County Economic Development Corporation is still moving forward but the agency is expecting that reimbursements will be delayed until the USDA is open and fully functioning. For the individual municipalities, they have not been affected significantly other than delays on projects at CAG, however for those communities who are working on larger federal grant projects those projects could be affected if the shutdown continues to go on. For those traveling, there is growing concern about the safety of our airspace and air travel as many TSA security agents who work at the airports are working without pay and many are not coming into work. Those planning to travel by air should expect delays at local airports. As nationwide news continues to report, National Parks are closed and those that are still accessible have overflowing toilets and trashcans. Governor Doug Ducey has issued an order to keep the Grand Canyon National Park open to the public using State funding however the Tonto National Monument near Roosevelt Lake is currently closed. Management and National Forest Service are also on furloughs and for the Legends of Superior Trails Inc. in Superior that means crews working to complete the Arnett Canyon Segment are unable to complete their work. Winkelman Mayor Louis Bracamonte expressed his concerns that essential programs that fund food stamps and social security could be affected and create additional hardship on local residents of the Copper Corridor. At press time Social Security checks are not being affected but the funding for food stamps could be affected which may create additional need at local food banks in the area.

Vista Church to launch satellite fellowship in San Manuel Some have asked what is the difference between a “Satellite Fellowship” and a “Local Church” besides the location? The modern phenomena of “Home Churches” opening up “Satellite Churches” is one in which I believe the Home church remains in a closer relationship with the Satellite Fellowship. Rather than starting a fellowship with the intention that the Satellite Fellowship becomes at some point a total separate local church, the two or more worshipping communities share a common ministry and mission only separated by location. In a Home Church/Satellite Fellowship the members of the Satellite Fellowship are members of the Home Church and vice a versa. The precedence for this in our Denomination, which is United Methodist, is

that when you become a member of a Local United Methodist Church you are a “United Methodist”. From that point on when you move from one UM Church to another you simply transfer your letter of membership to the new Church. We as Methodists are really big on “Belonging and Believing”. We believe that when God calls us into a relationship with Him through Jesus Christ, God calls us into a relationship with other believers to strengthen our belief and join with them in ministry and mission. We believe we can do more together than we can do separately. There is more power in our common ministry and mission than we can exercise as individuals. These two words, “ministry and mission” are Continued on page 5

often used interchangeable, but here is where I see the difference. “Ministry” is what the local church does for itself. Examples are: worship, Bible Studies, Sunday School, potlucks and fellowship events etc. Mission is what we do for others outside our local church. Examples of mission for Vista Church is that we support Family First, The Community Food Bank, Impact, and our work in Agua Prieta Mexico

Snow brings welcome tourists, business to Oracle

By John Hernandez San Manuel Miner The New Year’s snow drew a large number of people from outlying communities and Tucson to Oracle.

Many families were seen frolicking in the snow and driving up the back road to Mt. Lemmon. These people supported local businesses and Oracle restaurants reported that they were very busy.

One restaurant ran out of food on New Year’s Day as they were surprised by the unexpected increase of people visiting the area. Oracle received over five inches of snow. Television news stations visited

Oracle and talked with locals including owners of some of the restaurants. Not only was the snow good for business but the welcomed moisture was badly needed. This was a good way to start off 2019.

Five inches of snow in Oracle meant that folks from Tucson and surrounding areas descended to play and experience a rare Arizona treat.

John Hernandez | Miner

San Manuel got a nice sprinkling of snow on Jan. 1 and 2. The moisture was very welcome.
