A worthy New Year’s resolution: advocate for an abused or neglected child

FLORENCE, AZ - New Year’s resolutions typically focus on self-improvement: lose weight, stop smoking, exercise more often. This year, why not resolve to do something even more lasting: improve the life of a child who’s suffered abuse and neglect? As a court-appointed special advocate (CASA), volunteers receive in-depth training to advocate in court and in the community for the needs and rights of children in foster care. Volunteers come from all walks of life and professions and have one thing in common: they care about kids. “Volunteers get to know the child they represent by talking with everyone in that child’s life: parents and relatives, foster parents, teachers, medical professionals, attorneys, social workers and others. They use the information they gather to inform judges and others of what the child needs and what will be the best permanent home for them,” explains Donna McBride, CASA Unit

Supervisor for Pinal County. Volunteers complete a 30-hour pre-service training. Once they are assigned to a case, they can expect to spend an average of about 10 hours a month getting to know the child, gathering information, exploring resources to meet the child’s needs, representing the child in court and writing reports. Volunteers receive ongoing education and support from their local program as well as from the National CASA Association. “It’s one of the most personally rewarding experiences I’ve ever had,” says local volunteer Anne Lewis. “For many of the kids I’ve worked with, I’ve been the only stable, supportive adult in their lives. My sole responsibility is to protect their rights and to find them a safe and nurturing forever home. I know that I’m not just helping these children, but their kids and their grandkids and generations of kids to follow.” To learn more about how you can make a difference

in the life of an abused or neglected child, contact the CASA of Pinal County at 520-866-7076 or emailing www. CASAofPinalCounty.org. “Becoming an advocate for foster children will be the best resolution you can make for this year or any year,” McBride concludes.

Mountain Vista

By John Hernandez San Manuel Miner Mountain Vista students have been firing off rockets this past week. On Monday, one rocket was launched and on Thursday, five rockets were successfully blasted into the sky. The students then were able to retrieve the rockets as they parachuted down and landed on the football field. This was part of the activities of the new after school technology class. But it’s not all rocket science. The after-school class also teaches robotics and computer science &

technology. Activities include using a 3-D printer, flying a drone, building and launching rockets and building and operating robots including battling robot contests. There are 22 first through third grade students and 10 4th through 6th grade students participating in the program. The class is voluntary and the kids really enjoy having fun while learning. Julie Formo is the teacher and Michael Weasner volunteers his time to teach rocketry and astronomy. Michael is a former U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, IDA Sky Defender, and amateur astronomer.

Mammoth Police Department shares Christmas cheer By John Hernandez San Manuel Miner The Mammoth Police Department shared some Christmas spirit with two families this year. The department adopted two families who were in need. On Saturday, Dec. 22, representatives of the Mammoth Police Department delivered some food, gifts and Christmas cheer to the families. “We don’t just hand out tickets and arrest people,” said Police Chief Rudy Lujan. “We care about the community.” Police officers and staff of the Mammoth Police Department donated money from their own pockets, went shopping and wrapped the gifts. Chief Lujan said that “even though our police officers do not live in Mammoth, they care about the community.” One officer donated $200. Olivia, a dispatcher, said that while she was at Fry’s purchasing food, a lady from Germany overheard her talking about what the Mammoth Police Department was doing. The lady donated $20 for the families. The Mammoth Police Department purchased $280 of food and were able to purchase many gifts including two bicycles for the kids in the families. They were assisted by the W. Steven Martin Toy Drive which helps police departments and fire departments at Christmas time. One family wished to remain anonymous. At the home of the Pelfrey family the officers were told: “You guys are awesome” as they thanked them. “You are angels.” Thank you, Mammoth Police Department for all you do for the community.

Five Water-Saving New Year’s Resolutions (StatePoint) It’s that time of year to start setting New Year’s resolutions: work out more; get a new job; save money. While these are admirable goals, have you considered how your resolutions might make a bigger impact? Protecting our water is one of the biggest challenges facing the planet, but many of us don’t realize how much water flows through our lives every day. According to the EPA, the average US household wastes nearly 10,000 gallons of water each year – roughly enough to fill a residential-sized swimming pool. Talk about a reality check. This year, resolve to care for our most precious resource with a few simple eco-conscious tricks and swaps that will reduce water waste and keep our water clean – not to mention help out your wallet, too. • Implement meatless Mondays: A single pound of beef requires more than 1,800 gallons of water to produce, compared to tofu, which only takes approximately 300 gallons, according to the Water Footprint Network. So, once a week, plan a meat alternative for a meal or hit up your hipster, foodie friend and go to a vegan restaurant (they’re all the rage right now). • Reuse excess water: Your leftover cooking water is liquid gold. Save water remaining from boiling pasta and steaming vegetables and recycle it by nourishing your

houseplants or outdoor garden with the surplus. Plus, your plants will love the extra nutrients. • Replace your showerhead: A great way to conserve water is by installing a low-flow showerhead. With an EcoPerformance showerhead, like the Velocity rainshower showerhead from Moen, you can conserve water and still have plenty of pressure to lather, rinse and repeat. • Invest in a reusable water bottle: Whether you’re chugging water after SoulCycle or casually sipping throughout the day, reusable water bottles are convenient and eco-friendly. With the growing problem of plastic pollution in our water supply (see ya, straws!), utilizing a reusable water bottle can make a big difference, with the possibility to save an average of 156 plastic bottles each year, according to EarthDay.org. • Try a waterless facial cleanser: The secret is out: rinsefree cleansers are taking over. These detergent-free liquids will purify skin of dirt, oil and makeup. Simply apply a few drops to a cotton pad, swipe it across your skin and you’re done. These cleansers will get your complexion squeaky clean -- no water necessary. As you pledge to improve yourself in the year ahead, these great water-saving ideas can help you be more conscientious when it comes to protecting this limited resource -- and will ensure you’ll get a hearty pat-on-theback from Mother Earth.
