Three adults charged in attempted child abduction in Winkelman Three adults were arrested and charged in connection with an attempted kidnapping in the area of Fourth and Thorne in Winkelman. On Tuesday, Jan. 15, at approximately 6:35 p.m. a 13-year-old boy reported to Hayden Police that he had been approached by an unknown male in a newer model dark blue or black truck. Hayden Police said the male summoned the boy and when the boy turned to run the male exited the truck and chased him toward the school. The boy was able to locate his coach and they called the police department. The suspect was described as a “light skinned man, about 6’ tall, wearing a dark colored bandana over his face.” At 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16, Hayden Police conducted a more thorough interview of the victim at the police department. The boy was able to provide police a more detailed description of the incident, vehicle and suspect. Following the interview, an officer went to the school to conduct a security check and follow-up. The officer identified a vehicle in the parking lot matching the description of the suspect vehicle in this case. The officer quickly identified the vehicle as being driven by a 19-yearold student at the school.

The officer interviewed the 19-year-old male who admitted involvement, reporting that it was just a prank to try and scare the 13-year-old child victim. He implicated two other accomplices, who also admitted to their involvement. Kenneth Hines, 19, and Mary Cantrell, 19, both of Dudleyville, and Katrina Trevizo, 19, of Hayden were arrested and booked into Gila County Jail in Globe. “As your Chief of Police, I want each of you to know how important the safety of this community and our children are to me and my officers at the Hayden Police Department,” said Chief Tami Villar. “I want to thank my staff for their quick action, hard work, professionalism and dedication. I also want to thank the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office for sending four of their patrol deputies to assist us in ensuring a strong law enforcement presence for the safety of our community. Finally, we thank the school administration for their

How dangerous can drones be? Town of Kearny wants to remind residents of town ordinance By Arletta Sloan Copper Basin News Technology can be time-saving or timewasting, just as it can be a life saver or a danger to life. In most cases, it is not what the technological advancement is meant to achieve, but, in how it is thoughtfully or thoughtlessly utilized by its owner, which makes that difference. Drones have become a big problem in many parts of the world. According to an article from The Guardian (Dec 20, 2018 ‘How dangerous are drone to aircraft?’) “Any midair collision with an object is dangerous to aircraft, as exemplified by

the crash of US Airways Flight 1549 in January 2009.” In that case, it was a flock of Canada geese which was hit. The article goes on to say, “The weight of a Canada goose - between 2kg and 6.5kg is exceeded by some professional-quality camera drones.” There are federal laws concerning drones which apply to every state in the United States of America. In addition, there are laws for the State of Arizona which apply to the entire State of Arizona. These laws can be read about further by visiting online at : https://uavcoach.com/ drone-laws-arizona/ The Town of Kearny also has its own

ordinances, which cover what is and is not allowed concerning the use of drones by its citizens, for their protection. Anna Flores, Kearny Town Manager, stated, “The Town of Kearny is approximately 2.75 square miles and with the Medi-vac, along with the airplanes flying in and out, almost daily, flying a drone in the flight path, can be dangerous. The Town wants the residents to know the dangers of flying a drone within town limits. There are many open spaces outside of town limits that are perfect for flying drones.” Ordinance No. 18-208, Section 101-25, passed and adopted on Aug. 20,

2018, which is related to imposing community based safety requirements on the operation of all model aircraft including drones, no person shall operate any model aircraft within the Town of Kearny or within 5 miles of an airport or helicopter pad, without prior authorization of the FAA. It goes on to say that “Any person violating the provisions of this section shall be guilty of a class 2 misdemeanor.” The full ordinance can be read at Kearny Town Hall. Use your drones wisely, whether for fun or work. Just keep it safe, for the benefit of all, including yourself.

According to state law, there are two methods by which police may arrest suspected offenders. The suspect may be physically taken into the department and booked into jail, or the arresting officer may write a citation and release the suspect to appear in court later. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Only criminal citations are listed. All damages are estimates. Activity listed Jan. 13-19. Jan. 14 Criminal damage was reported in the 400 block of Ivanhoe Rd. Kathryn Johnson, 34, was arrested in the Stephens Trailer Court on a warrant. She was taken to the court and appeared before Judge Orzell.

Jan. 15 Tonie Salas, 46, was arrested on warrants. She was transported and booked into the Gila County Jail in Globe. Jan. 16 A hit and run accident was reported in the 300 block of Airport Rd. Jan. 18 Ramon Francisco Lorona, 33, was arrested in the 300 block of Alden Rd. and

was charged with driving on a suspended/ revoked license. He was cited and released. Hikers agree that Kearny is friendliest AZ Trail town Earlier this month, Natalie Moller, Bruce Ledbetter and a cool dog named Shadow got a dose of friendliness after visiting Kearny. Natalie and Bruce and first-time hiker Shadow walked from the Freeman Trailhead to the Florence-Kelvin Trailhead, from which they caught a ride into Kearny. Carol Hosler, who is an Arizona Trail Angel, offered them a ride back to their starting point and their vehicle. Natalie most recently came from California, where she hiked the Pacific Coast Trail. She is doing short hikes along the Arizona Trail over the next month to prepare for a longer trek this year. Bruce is a Tucson native and does volunteer work for the Arizona Trail Association, helping with maintenance. Sam Hosler, who took the photo of the three hikers, said the back of his truck wasn’t ideal for taking the photo, “but Bruce and Natalie were enamored of my license plate, and repeatedly told us that Kearny is, indeed, the friendliest town on the Arizona Trail.”
