LETTER TO THE EDITOR The Way of Peace, 2018 Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem and asked: “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.” They rejoiced when they saw His star, and found the child with Mary His mother; they fell down and worshipped Him. Opening their treasures, they presented Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. (Matthew 2) The Magi were a group of wise men, educated and apparently men of wealth. Why would they leave their

homes and travel because of a star? What did they see in that star? Why would they give of their treasures to a child they did not know? Why would educated men fall down and worship a baby in a manger? At that time, it was believed by astronomers, that a new star meant someone of importance was to be born. There were writings that told of a King to be born. I believe God Himself stirred up their hearts to be drawn to that star with an expectation that someone more important was coming, something bigger was about to happen. When they saw the Child, they knew this was a King of Kings. They felt the presence of God, and they saw God for themselves! They gave all they had of their treasures, but they were the ones who received the greatest gift ever given: the Son of God! They left the manger that day praising God and returned telling all the greatest story ever told! His star still shines bright. He still is drawing people to come see for themselves, to see the Christ child, to experience His love and God the father’s love!

God’s light has shone brightly this past year here through Family First; we have shared His love, His compassion with a world, a community so desperately needing of light! We have seen God do miracles in so many families’ lives and we are grateful. We thank God for all of you who have supported us this past year and enabled us to continue to reach farther than ever! May the light of Christ and His love shine brightly in your homes, and may God bless you and your families this Christmas season and on through the New Year! “The sunrise from on high shall visit us, to shine upon those who sit in darkness, to guide our feet into the way of peace”. Luke 2: 78-79 God Bless, /s/ Frank and Clare Grochocki and the board and staff at Family First

ADOR reminds Arizonans not to give scammers a gift of tax info this holiday season During this holiday season of family and giving, the Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) is urging taxpayers and tax preparers to remain vigilant in protecting private information from scam artists. The department says fraudsters use this time of year to target unsuspecting tax filers and tax professionals with tax-related scams that are over the phone, text or email (including phishing schemes), unsecure Wi-Fi, a data breach or hacking email accounts to obtain login passwords and financial data. Thieves also use card-skimming devices and will attempt to steal unattended personal mail. To help prevent being the victim of identity theft, ADOR recommends the following:

Mail your letters to Santa by Friday Copper Basin children can mail their wishes to Santa in the two special mailboxes in the area: at the Hayden Library and in front of the Copper Basin News office in Kearny. Steelworks authorize strike at ASARCO The United Steelworkers 886 announced last week that the members of the local union have overwhelmingly authorized the bargaining committee to call a strike if necessary. At this time members of the union continue to return to

work as the bargaining committee is trying to negotiate an economic agreement with ASARCO/Grupo Mexico, but should ASARCO/Grupo Mexico not meet terms or continue to meet to negotiate the membership will strike. The economic agreement will identify pay, benefits and

retirement to be compensated to the workers at both the ASARCO Ray Pit and ASARCO Smelter Complex. The workers are currently working without a contract. At press time there was not an official update from either the Union or ASARCO officials.

Copper Area News Publishers has confirmed that on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2018, there was an accident at the

Asarco Smelter Complex in Hayden. Two employees were injured in the accident.

Due to privacy issues and an ongoing investigation, no other information was available.

Introducing math and science to young children doesn’t have to be complicated. Parents and caregivers don’t have to wait until a child can solve written math problems or conduct complex science experiments. Activities such as finger painting, building blocks and baking are fun and interactive ways to build science and math skills in young kids. About 90 percent of a child’s critical brain development occurs before age 5, meaning the early years represent an ideal time to introduce Science, Engineering, Technology, and Math (STEM) skills to kids. “Young children learn naturally by exploring their environments,” said Ginger Sandweg, First Things First senior director for early learning. “What appears to adults as play is really forming and testing theories, and trying out different variables. This type of learning goes hand in hand with how young children learn best, using multiple senses (seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, and smelling) to discover the world around them.” According to the Center for Early Education in STEM, simple childhood games can promote significant STEM skills at a much earlier age. The years before kindergarten, are a critical period to help develop these skills through fun activities that get their hands and minds working.

Parents and caregivers can be ready with this list of great ideas to keep your child busy and build those early skills for STEM. First Things First offers these activities: • Building structures – knocking them down, testing them with weight, etc. – engages kids in reasoning about physics. • Cooking engages children in science and math through measuring ingredients and seeing how foods combine and change. • Singing and dancing convey counting concepts, and making musical instruments with everyday objects helps kids learn how to control aspects of sound like pitch, loudness, timbre and duration. • Through water activities, kids experiment with movement and volume, filling cups or pails, then watching how holes in objects affect water flow. • In playing card and board games, children use math and; reason about strategies. Families can help kids develop critical thinking and reasoning skills by asking questions like: • What do you think will happen? • Why do you think it ended that way? • How do you think things will be different if we change something? In addition, parents can share their Continued on page 12

CAC Aravaipa cabinetry and auto classes to be cancelled Students at the Central Arizona College Aravaipa Campus were saddened to learn that the cabinetry and auto classes would be cancelled in 2019. These classes have been full and in the case of the cabinetry/ woodworking class, there has often been a waiting list to join the class. The students do pay a tuition fee which includes an instructor and use of the equipment. Students have to provide their own materials for their auto and woodworking projects. Many of the students have been enrolled in the class for several years. The auto program has recently seen three generations of a family enrolled to work on a classic car together. One of the woodworking students has been working on building cabinets for her home. For a few of the students, the cabinetry class has become their place for lifelong learning and camaraderie. The classes are being cancelled to bring in a diesel mechanic and welding program which are workforce skills that the local mining industry is in need of.

STEM

Continued from page 5 knowledge, early on. Things that may seem obvious to us – like weather changes, traffic patterns and the change in an egg when it’s cracked, then cooked - are fascinating new concepts for children that give them a foundation from which to build future knowledge. By encouraging the development of STEM

skills in the early years, we help kids learn by experimenting with their environments and give them skills that will help them be successful in school and in life. In addition these STEM building activities help to instill a love of learning and imagination. So, remember to have fun and use everyday moments as learning moments.

The early years represent an ideal time to introduce Science, Engineering, Technology and Math (STEM) skills to young kids.
