Sheriff’s Report The Pinal County Sheriff’s Report is taken from the daily logs, based on the information provided by deputies. All persons arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Oct. 4 Daniel Justin Kramer, 26, Oracle, was arrested in the area of American Ave. and Rosales, Oracle, and was charged with disorderly conduct. He was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail in Florence. Glen Scott Hays, 50, San Manuel, was arrested in the area of Eighth Ave. and Bunk House Rd., San Manuel, and was charged with aggravated driving while under the influence of alcohol (DUI). He was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail. A fatal plane crash was reported near the San Manuel Airport. Burglary was reported in the 500 block of N. Oak Hills Pl., Oracle. Assault was reported in the 3200 block of W. Hwy. 77, Oracle. Burglary was reported in the 2100 block of W. American Ave., Oracle. Theft of a diamond ring and necklace was reported in the 65000 block of E. Rose Ridge Dr., SaddleBrooke. Criminal dmaage was reported in the 35000 block of S. Mesa Ridge Dr., SaddleBrooke. Locks were damaged. Oct. 5 Assault was reported at Sun Life in San Manuel. Trespassing was reported at the San Manuel High School. The person was arrested. Oct. 6 An accident without injuries was reported in the area of S. Mt. Lemmon Rd. and E. Fuego Rd., Oracle. A driver ran off the road. Criminal damage was reported in the 2000 block of W. Calle Encanto, Oracle. A vehicle and house were spray painted. A runaway juvenile was reported in the 36000 block of S. Mt. Lemmon Rd., Oracle (Sycamore Academy). Criminal damage was
reported in the area of S. Tierra Verde St., San Manuel. A vehicle’s window was smashed and profanities were written on the vehicle. Oct. 7 Joe Anthony Pugliese, 44, Oracle, was arrested in the area of N. Justice Dr., Oracle, and was charged with preventing the use of a telephone in an emergency, assault, criminal damage, disorderly conduct and threatening/intimidation. He was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail. Oct. 8 Theft of a trash can was reported in the area of N. Colleen Dr., Oracle. A house fire was reported in the 600 block of W. Camino Yucca, Oracle. The fire started in the backyard. Oracle Fire Department responded to the scene. Southwest Gas and BIA were contacted to shut off the gas and power to the home. No injuries were reported. A ruanaway juvenile was reported in the 36000 block of S. Mt. Lemmon Rd., Oracle (Sycamore Academy). Oct. 9 Theft of tobacco was reported int he 2100 block of E. American Ave., Oracle. An accident without injuries was reported in the 36000 block of S. Ridgeview Blvd., SaddleBrooke. A vehicle struck a boulder. An accident with injuries was reported in the 47000 block of E. Ballesta Rd., SaddleBrooke. A motorcycle went down, tearing up the rider’s leg. Oct. 11 A male juvenile, 14, Mammoth, was arrested at the San Manuel High School and was charged with being an incorrigible child. He was cited and released. Deputies received a report from a citizen in the 8500 block of S. Encino Rd., Mammoth, that a neighbor’s sheep had come onto the reporting person’s property and that the man’s dogs had killed the sheep. The man was unsure what to do, but decided to contact the sheep’s owner and handle the Sheriff, Page 17

Juvenile playing with ammunition injured in Mammoth On Sat., Oct. 13, 2012 at 3:28 p.m. Deputies from the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office along with Emergency Medical Technicians (EMS) were dispatched to the 83000 block of East Palomita Drive outside of Mammoth for a juvenile male with a shotgun wound to his left hand. When deputies and EMS personnel arrived on scene, they discovered a 14-yearold male with a shotgun wound to his left hand. The victim was stabilized
by medical staff and later transported to a Tucson hospital where he underwent surgery for his injury. The investigation revealed, two juvenile males, both age 14, had found various rounds of ammunition in a shed behind their property. The juveniles decided to place a metal pipe in a vice and then place the ammunition inside of the pipe and strike the primer with a hammer/ax to discharge the rounds. At least two spent casings

munition were seized for destruction as the guardian of the child is a prohibited possessor and is not able to possess ammunition or firearms. The guardian told deputies he had inherited the property from his grandfather and the ammunition had been left in the shed. The guardian also claimed no knowledge to what the juveniles were doing until one of them was injured. Child Protective Services was notified.

Avoid Maricopa County’s mistakes I have received robo-calls from the Babeu campaign attacking Jim Walsh, our Pinal County Attorney. Not only are these calls possibly a violation of campaign laws but the very nature of the unfounded accusations and lies shows the gutter level of politics Babeu practices. It’s no wonder he
had to leave Massachusetts when his brand of politics got so onerous he had to come to our state where nobody knows him. County Attorney Walsh has done an excellent job for Pinal County, is well respected throughout the state and has the breath of
experience required to run what is the largest law firm in Pinal County. His office has prosecuted more cases even as the actual crime rate is going down. He has done this by working closely with the sheriff’s department to ensure investigations are run correctly and by running an
efficient operation. His staff now includes former county attorneys that use to run other county attorney offices in the state because they respect Mr. Walsh and want to work with him. The County Attorney’s office is a multifaceted operation advocating for victim rights,
making sure “deadbeat” parents support their children, dealing with fraud to help protect small business interest and more. The County Attorney’s office is a complex public service and one that deserves experienced leadership and not someone who throws
rocks and hasn’t managed anything more complex then his checkbook. Jim Walsh deserves our vote for Pinal County Attorney. Let’s not repeat the mistakes of Maricopa County. /s/David Coward Gold Canyon, AZ
Paul Babeu’s lies never quit – they just get more outrageous. His latest target is Pinal County Attorney James Walsh, and why is he going after Mr. Walsh? Because he can’t control him, that’s why. Attorney Walsh has stood up to Babeu’s bullying and has refused to cave in to his ridiculous demands. Because there’s nothing in Walsh’s record or performance to criticize, Babeu has been flat out making stuff up. He throws out crazy numbers that have already been discredited by the experts about how Walsh never puts anyone in jail. It’s nonsense of course – and
frankly, if the sheriff is that worried about criminals in the county, then he should go out and find them, which is his job, rather than spend his time and taxpayer money campaigning for himself and his friends. He’s so busy promoting Voyles, (who is his designated flunky), Cheryl Chase (his hand-picked Supervisor candidate – and employee!) that he doesn’t have a minute to spare to actually do his job. James Walsh is the about the only one in the county who can and will stand up to this bully. He’s also honest, professional and ethical. Please give him your vote! /s/ Mary Desio

Did leaders discuss acid truck emergencies? I find it very curious that Curis Resources participated in the Area Leaders Meet to Discuss Emergency Plans event considering how they try so hard to convince the public that their operation is so safe. I see flooding was discussed; but, what about the many trucks, filled with acid, traversing Hunt Highway and Route 79 each day, should there be an accident causing an acid spill. Vapors
would spread across the area. I asked this question of the previous Chief of Police of Florence and the Fire Department about six months ago and was told that they could not handle the situation. I was told: “there are only 2 hazmat trained firemen” and “the police would have to call in police from other areas, which would take at least 1/2-hour to respond.” All of this when time is of
the essence? There are more types of emergencies than floods, which need to be addressed. I would like to see some information from all the emergency officials who participated in the meeting to give the public information on how they would handle such a situation and how that would effect residents as well as businesses. /s/ Marilyn Callahan Florence, AZ

manager in a business office qualifies her for this job. She seems to have no concept of the importance of the records she would be responsible for, or the duty to protect the voter files. thirty years, has overseen the process of bringing it into the twenty-first century technologically, and has specific training in election laws and procedures. No contest. Oracle Fire District board to remain at five By John Hernandez On Wednesday Oct. 10, a moderated candidate forum for the Oracle Fire district was held. The forum was sponsored by the Oracle Women’s Network (OWN). At the beginning of the forum moderated by Liz Tuck, Fire Chief Ortiz gave an overview of the reason the fire district board almost went to three members instead of the five that was announced earlier. In September the Board of Supervisors voted and approved a three member board for the fire district. Due to some communication issues, the resolution proposing a five person board for the district by their top two administrators did not make it to the Pinal County Elections Office. As a five person board had previously been announced to the electorate,
it was felt by the Oracle community that not enough notice was given to the candidates and the community who had believed it would be a five member board as advertised. Wednesday morning three candidates and several community members went to Florence and spoke at a special meeting with the Board of Supervisors. Thanks to the County Attorney’s office and two of the Board of Supervisors, the Oracle community was allowed to have a voice in deciding the number of members for the Oracle Fire District Board. The Oracle Fire District will have a five member board. There are seven candidates running for the board. They are Bud Bristow, Ellie Brown, John Duran, Bill Pregdo, Manuel “Manny” Navarro, Charlotte Poole and Bob

Rasko. At the forum each candidate was allowed to speak and let the audience know who they were and why they would be a good candidate for the Board. Two of the candidates did not appear at the forum due to family emergencies. They were Manny Navarro and Bill Pregdo. After the candidates spoke they were assigned to a table of Oracle residents where they answered questions from community members. They then rotated from table to table until they had met and answered questions from everyone at the forum. It was a great opportunity for the candidates to meet the public and for the community to learn about the candidates. The women of OWN should be commended for the work they are doing to keep the public informed on election issues.
School to host fall festival

Oracle School District participates in annual Hope Walk
By John Hernandez On Fri. Oct. 5, Oracle School District students, staff, teachers, and parents participated in the HOPE “Fitness” Walk. HOPE stands for Healthy Choices, Outreach, Prevention, Education. Kids in kindergarten through eighth grade walked for HOPE. This was the final day of HOPE Week activities at Mt. Vista and Oracle Ridge Schools. On Wed., a former player for the Phoenix Suns spoke to grades seven and eight at the Mt. Vista gymnasium. Jolly Roger a magician performed a show about
reading for the younger grades and about bullying for the older grades. On Thurs. African dancers performed. The walk was spread out into four groups with staggered start times. The walk started at Paseo Encino and Cody Loop roads. The walkers then made their way winding through the streets of Oracle to Mountain Vista School. The course was four miles long. The kindergarten students also participated but only walked to the Oracle town park. They then enjoyed snacks and drinks provided by Mountain Wellness Behavioral Center.

Oracle Schools’ PTO breaks ground on concession stand After several years of fundraising and planning, the Oracle School District’s Parent Teacher Organization got its concession stand building with restrooms project off the ground. On a recent Sat. morning a few members of the committee managing this community-based project met on the
site and completed digging the footers for the 800 square foot building. The next phase will involve rough in plumbing and electrical as well as pouring the concrete flooring. The concession stand is centrally located in the ball field area on the Mountain Vista Campus and Project, Page 17

County candidates gather for final Copper Area News forum By Chase Kamp Copper Area News There was plenty of heated debate and some occasional fireworks at the final candidate forum sponsored by Copper Area News Publishers held on Oct. 11, 2012. Candidates for County Attorney, District 1 Supervisor and LD-8 state House and Senate participated in the forum. The contentious race for
County Attorney reached a boiling point with incumbent Democrat James Walsh fervently defending his record against steep allegations by challenging Republican Lando Voyles. Voyles continued his assertion that Walsh’s office has been soft on violent crime. “We have cases right now where officers are getting shot at, which are getting probation,” Voyles
said. Walsh contended the opposite, saying felony prosecutions in the County are up 41 percent in the last five years. “FBI statistics show violent crime is down in the County by 30 percent.” Voyles also touted his claim that 61 percent of mandatory prison cases have been plead down to probation by Walsh’s office, one that
Walsh virulently opposes. “It’s flat wrong,” Walsh said. “We are not letting violent criminals out in the street.” Voyles campaign is being run in tandem with Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu’s re-election campaign, sharing expenses and appearing together on road signs labeled as the “Law and Order Team.” Walsh argued this kind of political allegiance is dangerous, pointing to the relationship between Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas and County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Shaping for success – local businessman partners with school By John Hernandez Rite of Passage Sycamore Canyon Academy has partnered with professional dog trainer Jay Smith of Community Dog Training to provide the Shaping for Success program. Sycamore Canyon
Academy provides a therapeutic program for teenage boys that are struggling at home, in their school and need a change in direction for their lives. Shaping for Success uses rescue dogs in a training program where teenage
boys and the dogs learn from each other. The dogs are provided by Foundation for Animals in Risk (FAIR). The students provide obedience training for the dogs. Dogs that are trained are much easier to adopt.
The boys learn life skills while living and working with the dogs. There are two trainers per dog and an alternate trainer. The students selected for the program must have been at the academy

The candidates for District 1 Supervisor also had their share of heated language. Incumbent Pete Rios lashed out at Republican challenger Gem Cox for accusing Rios of doubling the County Supervisors’ retirement fund, saying the Board is not legally capable of making such a move. Independent candidate Alicia Bristow said the biggest problem at the Board is lack of communication. She argued there was not sufficient notice about a special session of the Board earlier this month that changed the number of Oracle Fire Board members from three to five.\ A primary topic discussed by the LD-8 House candidates was education. Current state Representative Frank Pratt said the legislature had to make painful cuts to education during the financial crisis. “We’re in a position now where we restored $120 million to education that was cut previously in this current budget,” he said. Republican TJ Shope touted his experience as a member of the Coolidge school board and said he would support Pratt’s bill to allow Central Arizona College to give fouryear degrees. “These are the types of programs that will be needed for future employment in this district,” Shope said. for at least one month. They must show positive change in behavior, carry a 3.0 grade average, and demonstrated that they have done enough work to get into the program. Being chosen for the program is an accomplishment for the students and earns them an improved level of trust. The dogs live with the trainers in a dormitory setting. The student trainers are responsible for the dog assigned to them. They clean their cages, feed, bathe, and exercise them. The students work with Jay Smith and Julie Hall learning to train their assigned dog. Cindy Dechamp is from the academy staff has also been involved with the program. The program lasts five weeks. The trained dog is then placed into a foster home until they are adopted out. The Shaping for Success program invites community involvement. Volunteers are welcome to help them walk and train the dogs during the day while the students are in school. Fly-in Pancake Breakfast By John Hernandez The San Manuel Airport saw some new planes landing as a number of pilots flew in for the Arizona Pilot’s Association Drive-In Fly-In Pancake Breakfast and Safety Seminar. The breakfast was provided by the San Manuel Elks Lodge. Following breakfast a safety seminar was given on Survival and Survival Equipment by Howard Deevers. Howard is a volunteer for the FAASteam safety program that provides safety talks and seminars all over the state. FAASteam is the educational outreach of the Federal Aviation Administration. Howard has been a pilot and flight instructor for 35 years. He is based out of Tucson. The FAASteam is dedicated to improving the nation’s aviation safety record through safety training, outreach and education. Two ladies flew in from Phoenix. They were Marguerite Baier and her co-pilot Mallory Schreck. They are members of the Phoenix Chapter of the Ninety-Nines an International organization of women pilots. The Ninety-Nines were originally founded in 1929 at Curtiss Field, Valley Stream, Long Island, New Breakfast, Page 17

Miners take down Hawks 27 – 0
By Frank Smith The Miners made the trip into to Tucson on Friday night to take on the Tanque Verde Hawks - returning home with a 27 – 0 shutout, this was the Miners fifth shutout win of the season. With the win San Manuel moved to 6 – 2 overall and are sitting at number 12 in the Division V state rankings heading in to the final two games of the regular season with their sights on the playoffs. In the first quarter, San Manuel started out with a fumble on their opening drive going three and out on a fourth down situation. The Hawks took over on downs but punted the ball away pinning the Miners deep in their own territory at five yard line. San Manuel lined up at the five, handing off the ball to running back John Ruiz on the first play of the drive – Ruiz exploded 92 yards down field to the Hawks three yard line where Ruiz would punch it in three plays later for the one yard touchdown run. The extra point kick by Adrian Diaz was good for a 7 – 0 Miners lead with 6:56 in the first quarter. San Manuel drove 95 yards in four plays taking 1:26 on the drive. On the next possession for the Hawks, the Miners defense held Tanque Verde on a fourth down and six to take over on downs. Miners compete in High School Classic Swim Meet On Sat., Oct. 6, the Miner Swim team attended the High School Classic Swim Meet held at the University of Arizona. Over 900 Swimmers from around Arizona competed at the meet in front of a large crowd at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.
With the number of competitors, every heat of every race would be very close bringing out some great competition. Miner swimmers had many personal best swims at the meet. For the girls, Cierra Austin swam fast enough in the 100 Breaststroke to set a

By John Hernandez The sixteenth annual Walkathon was held on Sat. Oct. 16 in SaddleBrooke. The fundraiser for SaddleBrooke Community Outreach benefits many communities in eastern Pinal County. The walk consisted of two distances one was 3.25 miles and the Half Walk was 1.5 miles. The walks both started at and ended at the SaddleBrooke Clubhouse where everyone then enjoyed a great breakfast. Walkers from SaddleBrooke, Catalina, Oro Valley, Tucson, San Manuel and other areas participated in the walk. Mammoth-San Manuel
Kids’ Closet gives out fall wardrobes By John Hernandez Volunteers at the Kids’ Closet in Mammoth were busy Thurs. providing fall wardrobes for kids from Mammoth Elementary and San Carlos Elementary schools. Clothing was distributed to 37 first, second and third graders from Mammoth and 59 students, grades three through six from San Carlos. This program is part of SaddleBrooke Community Outreach. It provides wardrobes in spring and fall to over 2,000 children from Catalina, the Tri-Community up to Superior and the San Carlos Reservation.

Minerals and Rocks: Science with Mr. Steve
By Room 34 Second and Third Graders There is a man named Mr. Steve who volunteered to help our class learn more about science. Today was our first day that we saw him in Room 34 as 2nd and 3rd graders. Mr. Steve used to teach high school science, so he knows a lot of things about science. Today he brought rocks to share with us. We observed the rocks and learned about one kind of rock called granite. Granite is made of 3 minerals. One mineral is black, another mineral is pink, and the other mineral is crystal or clear. Mr. Steve taught us that there is more granite than any other rock on Earth. Mr. Steve gave us each some
rocks. He had us sort the rocks into two groups: granite rocks and non-granite rocks. While we were working, Hannah said, «Mr. Steve, can we put the rocks in water to see what happens?» «Yes! That›s a great idea!» said Mr. Steve. Adrian said, “What if we put hot and cold water?” So, we set up an experiment. We got one tub of hot water and one tub of cold water. Then each group put one granite rock in the cold and hot water tubs. We will observe the rocks for one week. After one week, we will take the granite rocks out of the tub (if there are any left) and see what happened. We made some predictions about what we think will
How To Take Care Of A Guinea Pig! By Jayme M. Our class has a pet guinea pig. His name is Rocco. He has a mohawk from his head to his collarbone. Ms. Vargas bought Rocco a harness and a leash. Rocco likes to nibble on bracelets. Ms. Vargas had the class look up how to take care of a guinea pig. We learned that guinea pigs can’t roll in hamster balls, if a guinea pig is in a hamster ball it will break its spine. If you put a guinea pig in a hamster cage it will get stuck. You have to make sure you change the water every day and make sure it’s fresh, clean water. The things you can feed guinea pigs are apples, vegetables, cilantro, grapes, strawberries, spinach, red pepper and cherry tomatoes. The things you can’t
feed guinea pigs are nuts, seeds, dry fruit, dairy, meat, rabbit pellets, cabbage and broccoli. Guinea pigs have to have Vitamin C. Make sure to clean the cage every 4-5 days. Also give them baths every 2-3 months. When you’re holding a guinea pig don’t have a tight or loose grip, have a grip that won’t let the guinea pig squirm. Wash your hands before and after holding a guinea pig. Guinea pigs usually don’t bite on the cage but if they do that means they want more attention. If you want your guinea pig to be healthy let it out once a day to play for 8-15 minutes. Guinea pigs’ cages have to be 7.5 square feet for one guinea pig. Remember having a guinea pig is a big responsibility.

Our class has a lot of animals. We have two bearded lizards, Princess Jasmine and Darth Vader. They like to eat all kinds of food like carrots, apples, greens, and crickets. We also have seven fish and a water turtle. The fish and turtle eat food from the store. Our water turtle’s name is Slow Poke. We are raising red wiggler earthworms and they eat all kinds of food or paper. They give us worm castings for the garden. It is fun to take care of the animals in our class. We take turns feeding, watering, and helping our teacher clean the cages.
Plants (With Worm Castings and Composting) By Thalia Tamayo On 9-6-12 my 4th grade class at MESS started to plant vegetables in front of our class. We have two plots, A and B. A is compost with soil. B is worm castings and soil. We planted carrots, peas, radish, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, spinach, and more. Every day we go outside and check on them. If they need water we use rain water we collected during the Monsoon storms. In the compost we put paper, banana peelings, coffee grounds, egg shells, paper, and paper towel rolls, leaves, matches (paper or wood) and more. My teacher Ms. Sanchez had us read the seed packages so we would know where to plant them. In plot B we have Rolly Pollies from the compost in there too. So if your child or grandchild goes to MESS please donate composting stuff.

Steve has been flying for five years and uses the San Manuel Airport regularly. Steve is a San Manuel High School alumnus, class of 1967. The San Manuel Airport is getting busier and better known. Construction is beginning on the runway lights, which will bring in night flyers and more opportunities. After the seminar, a memorial service was held for Max Wood. It was attended by Max’s family, friends and fellow pilots.
