Photography that challenges your world The vision of Copenhagen Photo Festival is to strengthen our ability to consider photography as a form of expression by curating, engaging, informing and debating. Therefore, we offer a broad festival program organized under three main themes - Framing Society, Framing Identity and Framing Vision - that questions and challenges the language and collective value of photography in a culture that is becoming more and more dominated by pictures. A special thanks to all the photographers, our partners and to the City of Copenhagen, Augustinus Fonden, Aage og Johanne Louis-Hansens Fond and The Danish Arts Foundation for their support of Copenhagen Photo Festival 2018 – the biggest photo event in Scandinavia. Have a great festival!

Copenhagen Photo Festival has invited the Argentine talent, Dana Balajovsky, to exhibit in Photo City. What it is to be somebody? is a poetic journey into the mind where melancholy, longing and separation induce artistic reflections into identity and existence in a time where human emotion is increasingly exchanged through digital channels.

Jessica Backhaus (DE) & Emil Salto (DK) Decontext 7 – 17 jun

Emil Salto Channeling Dora Maar, ((Ghost echoes) Listen to the quiet voice), 2016

Photography is inextricably linked to memory and to time, but what we see when we look at a photograph is basically a compilation of visual elements 44

without significance in themselves. Jessica Backhaus’ and Emil Salto’s art grow out of personal or collective memories, but in the finished works emotions and experiences are in dramatically different ways removed from their original context and transformed into purely visual basic elements. In Decontext, the gaze flickers between image as abstract beauty and image as bearer of meaning, emotions and narratives. With their art Backhaus and Salto challenge us to see both the photograph and the world it represents.

Marta Pohlmann-Kryszkiewicz (PL/DE) Natural Forms 7 – 17 jun

Marta Pohlmann-Kryszkiewicz Natural Forms, 2017

Marta Pohlmann-Kryszkiewicz’ Natural Forms is born out of a fascination of the way materials are constantly undergoing change, and in her works, PohlmannKryszkiewicz explores this impermanence. With her camera she freezes the critical moment where something withers and dies, and the disturbing forms of decay are alternately fused and torn apart in monumental and virtuoso 46

Sara Vighi (IT) Handbook of a Town 7 – 17 jun Sara Vighi Handbook of a Town, #4, 2016

Sara Vighi Handbook of a Town, #8, 2016

As an archeologist, Sara Vighi has a quite unique approach to photography. In her Handbook of a Town, she embarks on a tongue-in-cheek scientific study of the city of Reggio Emilia, hometown of her family. The city obviously plays an important part in her own personal history, but it also carries great symbolic national value as the place where the Italian flag - Il Tricolore - was invented in 1797. Through observation, collection and investigation, Sara Vighi with her work writes a guide-book to understanding the city which is at the same time personal and universal, and with great humor she points to the clash between the large brushstrokes of history and the fine detail of her own personal narrative. Sara Vighi (b. 1969) studied archaeology at the University of Bologna and in 2017 she achieved the Master of Fine Arts in Imaging Arts and Photography from Fondazione Fotografia Modena.

Sculptural Landscapes Marianne Bjørnmyr (NO), Inka & Niclas Lindergård (FI, SE), Adam Jeppesen (DK), Miriam Nielsen (DK), Linn Pedersen (NO), Johan Österholm (SE) Kurateret af Curated by: Trine Stephensen, Plantation Journal (NO/UK) 7 – 17 jun

Linn Pedersen Soft Spot, 2013. Cyanotypes, medium format photography

Inka & Niclas Adaptive Colorations IV, 2017. Stones, plaster, pigment, 20x25x25 cm

Sculptural Landscapes presents a number of Scandinavian artists who all work with the sculptural and abstract qualities of photography. In their works, they approach the landscape as phenomenon, and we meet both man-made and natural landscapes as well as internal and external landscapes. Here, the landscape is both a universal fact and a personal affair, and the artists’ approach is just as many-faceted. Here we meet works created directly in the camera, but also works that are distorted, faded, twisted and sampled outside of the camera. And the artists do not limit themselves to working within the frame, they challenge the surface of the image itself as they move outside of the frame in spatial installations. Udstillingen er støttet af Nordisk Kulturfond. The exhibition is supported by The Nordic Culture Fund.

Sundial | Sander Foederer (NL) Sander Foederer Sundial Video still

In his video projection “Sundial”, Sander Foederer blends documentary and artifice to disrupt the flow of urban life and offer a new vision of the everyday. The modern metropolis becomes a stage for the sublime potential of natural phenomena, which are one of the few ways in which people within the constructed city, remain strongly connected to nature. The title points to the intersection of time and light. In Sundial, these two fundamental ingredients of photography are manipulated in order to focus attention on the act of looking. Martin Thaulow (DK) Postcards from ... 7 – 17 jun

Martin Thaulow Sharifi, 2017

Focusing on human beings, Martin Thaulow has traveled to different destinations for more than 3 years to portray refugees living in the streets, refugee camps and asylum centers. With him, he has carried a portable studio that has enabled a photo series that shows the portrayed refugees free of 54

co-narrative elements and environments. Martin Thaulow’s work is at the intersection of classical portrait photography and photo journalism and can be considered as a response to the dehumanization that often affects the public debate on refugees. The classic portraits of people on the run are both aesthetic, full of substance for thought and can be experienced publicly and freely accessible near Photo City.

Nils Stelte (DE) In Security 7 – 17 jun

Nils Stelte In Security, 2017

The perceived threat grows with each terrorist attack in Europe, and with it a desire for security. A sense of security that cannot simply be created, but must be demonstrated. A security policy that reacts to the fears of the public requires swift and visible solutions: the quasi-militarisation of the police, concrete barriers, surveillance, and crisis simulation. Terrorism is a 56

fight with unequal means. It produces a ubiquitous sense of fear and provokes strong reactions. My photos document the subtle shifts that occur in the the struggle for security. These shifts operate between technologisation and improvisation, media production and research, and constitute the new infrastructure of things designed for our protection.

Prasiit Sthapit (NP) Change of Course 7 – 17 jun Prasiit Sthapit Change of Course, 2014

Udstillingen Change of Course præsenterer et helt unikt fotojournalistisk projekt. The exhibition Change of Course presents a unique photojournalistic project. Prasiit Sthapit has portrayed the Narayani River, a river that marks the border between India and Nepal. But over the years the river’s run has changed and with that the border. In the exhibition, installed in a terrain vague in Photo City, he poetically depicts life in the liquid borderland of looming conflict.

Mosul, Irak, 2016. 60

Mosul, Iraq, 2016. Together with their allies Iraqi forces are reconquering the city, a stronghold of the selfproclaimed Islamic State. These dramatic events are depicted by some of the world’s leading war photographers in the exhibition in Photo City’s container city. But the exhibition is much more than dramatic war photographs. A series of unique objects rescued by the photographers documents the way in which IS tried to wipe out all traces of life and culture that did not fit into their radical worldview. The Battle of Mosul is a heroic tale of the war’s heroes and villains, but also the threat, war and conflict poses to our common life and cultural heritage. Seminar: “My Place”. Tage Poulsen’s photographs exceeds the photographic realism and challenges our immediate sense of reality.
