Rigtig god festival! Maja Dyrehauge Gregersen Festivaldirektør

Welcome to Copenhagen Photo Festival 2016 Dear festivalgoer, You are holding this year’s festival catalogue in your hands, and a good experience is awaiting you. The new magazine format is a celebration of photography. It lends more space to the images and it calms the eye. The catalogue is a peek through the keyhole into all the exhibitions that photographers, curators, and the photo enthusiasts in the festival team have prepared for Copenhagen Photo Festival 2016. We wish to create an experience that will hopefully stay in your mind’s eye long after you leave the exhibitions and go back outside to enjoy the summer sun. Photography is everywhere. Everything is happening so damned fast – we rush through Facebook, Instagram, quick online news, and we capture snapchats in the same moment they disappear. Copenhagen Photo Festival takes a stand when it comes to this constant flow of images. We create awareness about the potential of photography, and we celebrate beauty and the strength of versatility of the medium.

Copenhagen Photo Festival wants you to slow down, and we encourage you to spend more time on the images. Thus, it is with great joy that we can add a completely new dimension to the festival experience this year. With the ‘Look & Listen’ app, you will be able to scan selected photos, at the exhibitions as well as here in this catalogue, which will then take you directly to video and audio stories that go behind the images and the photographers. So, off you go to the festival, while it’s there. The rest of the year, you can get comfortable in your favorite chair or on the train, as you open up the festival catalogue and dive into the images and the stories behind them. A special thanks to all the photographers for their images and to our main sponsors, Københavns Kommune, Nordea-fonden, and A.P. Møller og Hustru Chastine Mc-Kinney Møllers Fond til almene Formaal, for their support of Copenhagen Photo Festival 2016 – the biggest photo event in Scandinavia. Have a great festival! Maja Dyrehauge Gregersen Festival director

Photo City Photo City has been curated and put together by Copenhagen Photo Festival. It is a unique city that consists of exhibitions, workshops, artist talks, openings and more, which have all been organized especially for the festival – and they will only exist for the duration of the festival. Based on applications from Denmark and abroad, the festival’s program committee has selected the exhibitions. Additionally, there will be larger group exhibitions and involving projects initialized by the festival itself. A recurring tradition is ‘The Censored Exhibition’, which shows international tendencies within contemporary photography, represented by talented new and established Danish and international photographers and artists. This year, the selection committee consists of Matthias Hvass Borello, curator and editor of Kunsten.nu, Trine Søndergaard, photography‐based visual artist, and Banja Rathnov, founder of Banja Rathnov Galleri & Kunsthandel.

The Gallery Scene Along with a long list of galleries, museums, art centers, and established project spaces, Copenhagen Photo Festival highlights the role of photography within contemporary art. The gallery scene is a broad term that covers the established exhibition scene and the whole range of everything from commercial galleries to publicly funded museums. The exhibitions will mainly be found in the greater Copenhagen area and in southern Sweden, and in many cases, they can be experienced for a longer time than the official festival period.

Photo Schools Denmark has a strong tradition when it comes to educational programs within photography – and the technical, narrative, and artistic aspects of the medium are weighted differently among the programs. That is why Copenhagen Photo Festival wishes to host graduate exhibitions from all the different types of programs.

PTicture The Music In 2014, 2015 and 2016, Copenhagen Photo Festival has invited all of Denmark to ‘Picture the Music’ – its emotions, atmospheres, memories and experiences. In 2016, 46 pictures have been selected for the exhibition among the approx. 2,700 that were submitted. The group of curators consists of Lucy Love, musician and visual artist; Thomas Borberg, head of photography at Politiken; and Rasmus Ranum, co-founder of Copenhagen Photo Festival and owner of the photo agency Sumo-Brothers. The three-year anniversary of the exhibition is celebrated by the release of the biggest music photography book in Danish history, containing a selection of submitted pictures from 2014 to 2016. After Copenhagen Photo Festival 2016, the exhibition will travel across the country. Like in 2014 and 2015, ‘Picture the Music’ can be experienced at libraries, modern art museums, historical museums, concert and cultural houses and of course the newly opened Ragnarock. ‘Picture the Music’ is supported by Nordea-fonden.
