Library News MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR The Library’s continued success isn’t possible without your support and the sound financial stewardship by the Board of Trustees and library staff. As part of their financial oversight responsibilities, the Library Board recently took advantage of favorable market conditions and completed the refinancing of $4.8 million of debt related to the 2010-11 Cook Park Library expansion/renovation and Aspen Drive Library construction. The Library District has a credit worthiness rating of Aa1, the second highest possible, as assigned by Moody’s Investors Services. This rating, along with strong demand for tax-exempt debt by investors, were the primary factors in obtaining a low interest rate. The lower rate will save the District $692,000 over the next 12 years, enabling the Library to further enhance collections, services, and facilities. As you explore and enjoy the Library’s many resources, please know that your local tax dollars are being managed responsibly to provide you with the best the Library has to offer. Thank you for your continued support. On behalf of the Library Board and staff, we wish you a happy holiday season and a rewarding new year. David Archer | Library Director | darcher@cooklib.org

A Three-Star Three-peat!

For the third consecutive year, Cook Memorial Public Library District has been recognized as a ‘Star Library’ by the industry publication, Library Journal. From a total of 7,349 libraries evaluated, our library is one of just 260 libraries nationwide, and 19 in Illinois to receive this recognition. Patron visits, materials checked out, program attendance, and public Internet computer use at public libraries are all criteria used to identify those with outstanding support and service. We thank you for your avid support; you make the library a star.

Talk with a Trustee: Saturday, December 3

1-2 p.m. Aspen Drive Library; and 1-2 p.m. Cook Park Library

Do you have a good idea for the library? A program you would like the library to host? A service not currently provided? Or maybe you would just like to talk with a trustee about what the library offers. DROP IN any time 1-2 p.m. on Saturday. Members of the Library Board will be available to listen to your comments and answer your questions. Your input is welcome!

Leading the Charge – now at Cook Park Library

You’re at the library and suddenly discover that the charge on your smartphone, tablet or laptop is at…single-digits! Whether you have a cable but no charging device – or a charger but no cable – we’ve now got you covered. Recently installed at Cook Park library, there is now a compact charging station near the window area in the Café. As with the one at Aspen Drive library, the charging station has a variety of retractable adapters - and can charge multiple devices at the same time. However, please note – as with any public charger - devices are not to be left unattended! For your convenience, there are two armchairs next to the station where you can comfortably wait, while enjoying refreshments from the Café’s vending machines.

they came from. Find documents from military service. Explore land and probate records. Dig through newspapers and city directories to fill in the gaps of your ancestors’ lives. Ancestry® Library Edition also features international records from the UK, Denmark, Ireland, Norway, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada.

“Power up with your Cook Library Card” we said to you in our fall Ins & Outs newsletter –and get a library card, if you don’t already have one. So, how did you do?

And that’s not all, because Ancestry® Library Edition is more than just records! The learning center will teach you advanced research techniques. While the Library Edition does not have the “shaking leaves” of Ancestry. com, it does have family trees that you can look through for clues. This premium genealogy database is available on all public library computers whenever the library is open. Visit the library to use Ancestry® Library Edition, or talk to one of our librarians who specializes in genealogy. We will be happy to introduce you to the richness and diversity of genealogy research through Ancestry® Library Edition.

New Database

Chicago Consumers’ Checkbook/Center for the Study of Services is a non-profit consumer organization providing information to help consumers make smarter purchase choices. Its findings on local services and products are culled from consumer surveys and evaluations, and then reported online, via mobile apps, and in print. Coverage includes Chicago and suburban areas. To access, go to: cooklib.org>RESEARCH> then search under the letter "C".

We’re happy to report that 387 new library card accounts were added in the month of September, also known as National Library Card Month. Did you also know that the summer – and probably the summer reading club – can boost library card sign-ups? Here are the numbers for new library card accounts – summer 2016: June: 458 July: 448 August: 610 total [that’s 385 adults; 225 children] Many local school districts require a library card as a school supply, which explains the huge spike in August, and often we find that entire families are getting cards at the same time. That’s a lot of power. Nevertheless, anytime is a good time to get a library card!
