Local favorite, Maria's Cantina opened in November of 2009. While anyone who tries to snag a table there on a weekend would doubt it, owner Grant Whipple says it wasn't always the case. “It took a while for people to find us and for us to get a foothold, but it looks like year number 5 is really taking off.” As far as popular dishes, he says, “There are quite a few. We have a very diverse menu with something for everyone. We prepare a ton of nachos and quesadillas, but we also make a fantastic burger. My personal favorite right now is probably the BBQ pulled pork quesadilla.” Whipple's favorite part about owning a restaurant is, “ just being in the kitchen and having the freedom to do things my own way. I just really appreciate being able to rely on my own instincts and experiences to make things happen.” One such instinct was where he should open his restaurant. “Southaven is really special because it is a true community. It has that 'everybody knows each other' feeling. I've lived in some bigger cities and Southaven just has a more of a family atmosphere.”

With two locations in Southaven (and one in Pickwick), the Fillin Station Grille has fans across the Mid-South. The funky décor and venue itself resemble a gas station, it’s most popular for the delicious burgers and cowboy fries, and it's patio is the only rooftop destination in DeSoto County. If you're under 21 be sure to get there before 9pm. “Southaven is special because we have so many independently owned restaurants and shops. It's a small town with all the perks of a big city,” says owner Steve Beene. Another unique factor adding to the tasty cuisine is that the restaurant strives to purchase their produce locally — bringing it all back to the community. 43
