This time of year is one of temptation. After dreary, wet days of winter, the sun peeks from behind a cloud, warming temperatures enough to tempt you out onto the water. Such is the case with me. On a recent sunny day with temperatures barely topping the 60-degree mark, I ventured out onto the lake – a welcome break from weekends inside. Of course it was still cold, the wind gusting now and then to remind me it was only February, not May. But I took precautions – warm clothes, a hooded jacket and even a knit piece to keep my ears warm. I must have looked like I was ready for a ski mobile instead of a pontoon boat, but it felt liberating just the same. I wasn’t the only one. I saw quite a few of my bundled-up lake lovers who had succumbed to the same temptation as me. It won’t be long now. … It’s March. It’s Lakeside. It’s where you want to be. — Carol Pappas, editor and publisher

The legend of Sleeping Giant

The love story behind a mountain’s moniker Story by Kendra Carter Photos by Brian Schoenhals

6

Its majesty is undeniable, but its story is a bit of a mystery. Views of the “Sleeping Giant” mountain — also called Renfroe Mountain by some — can be seen from both the Talladega and Pell City sides of Logan Martin Lake. Charlie Mae Moreè and her husband, Elmer, who have been living in their lakeside home for 22 years, said they had not heard the legend of the mountain’s name, though Charlie Mae said she sits on her sun porch daily, admiring her view of the mountain. The couple loves their view so much, they even had noted artist Wayne Spradley paint it, but they both said they had never heard where the mountain got its name. “I had just heard there was a legend of the ‘Sleeping Giant’ mountain, but that’s about it,” she said. E. Grace Jemison shares the old legend of the mountain in her 1959 book, “Historic Tales of Talladega.” According to the legend, years before the “white man” came to Alabama, there was a tribe of Indians in central, present day Talladega County. The chief of this tribe was Choccolocco, who possessed many treasures. Princess Talladega, his only daughter, was treasured above all others. “Talladega, as every princess should be, was the most beautiful maiden in all the realm. Choccolocco, realizing that he could not continuously keep Talladega within the walls of his selfish heart and domain, began to cast about for a suitable mate for his treasured daughter,” Jemison said in the tale. Continued on Page 8

Sleeping Giant

Indian chiefs from all around offered Choccolocco gifts for his daughter’s hand, but Talladega said, “Nay. Give me time. “The right companion will come along some day who loves the things that I love, and we can be happy wandering through life together.” One April day, Talladega was walking to a spring when she heard a beautiful song in the distance. “The song grew nearer and nearer, and more beautiful, until the singer burst into view, as Talladega dipped her earthen pot into the water,” Jemsion wrote. “She met the dark eyes of a comely young warrior, and at that moment she knew that in some way their future

8

From Page 7

would be linked together.” The legends said, in the spring of that year, an affair began. “Each morning a song was answered, a friendship ripened and a love was strengthened.” One day Talladega, approaching her cabin, heard Cheaha, chief from an adjoining province, bargaining with Choccolocco for her hand. She knew she would not marry him, but after Cheaha left, her father told her he favored Cheaha and that she would go with him to his province. After sleeping none, Talladega went to await the daily song of Coosa, her love.

LAKESIDE LIVING & LOGAN MARTIN HOMES, MARCH 2009

“Coosa possessed no property, and he was so overcome with the helplessness and pathos of their situation, that he plunged into the woodland, where he wandered up and down the banks of his favorite stream for days,” Jemison wrote. He could only think of the beautiful Talladega, and after a few days, he went to speak to Choccolocco. Coosa told him that though he had no property, he was “young, and taller, swifter and stronger” than other warriors of the province. Legend says he also told Choccolocco he would direct him to a place where valuable, unprocessed minerals were stored. Choccolocco replied that if Coosa brought him a sample of the valuable minerals and could guarantee potential ownership, he would consider his proposal. Legend states when Coosa turned, he saw Cheaha — the suitor whom Choccolocco had chosen for his daughter — had joined them, and Coosa figured out he was the chief’s choice Talladega had spoken of. Cheaha left with an idea, and he decided to put the plan in action. Legend has it that he called for two young warriors — one to bring a medicine from his tribe and the other to follow Coosa. The requested medicine would put any man to sleep — a sleep that could not be broken unless an antidote, which was known only by the medicine man who discovered it, was given. One of the warriors told Cheaha of Coosa’s campsite, and once Cheaha and the medicine man arrived, they

found Coosa peacefully sleeping “with arms folded on his breast and his face turned to the heavens.” The medicine man gave Coosa the herb, and after making sure the drug worked, Cheaha killed the medicine man. Jemison wrote that, in the meantime, Choccolocco became disgusted at the delay of Coosa and ordered wedding preparations be made for Talladega and Cheaha. Talladega found her sleeping Coosa, visiting him whenever she had a chance. She grew depressed as the day of her impending nuptials approached, and Cheaha told Talladega that Coosa could never be awakened. She said nothing in response. According to the legend, when the wedding day arrived, Talladega was nowhere to be found. After a search of the woodlands, hills and valleys, one boy told the group Princess Talladega had been found, lying dead on ever-sleeping Coosa’s breast. In addition to the eternal sleep, the drug also had the power to make Coosa grow, and while he slept, he continued to grow into the great mountain. Jemison wrote, “Mother Nature has lovingly covered him with earth, to protect him from the cold. She has planted trees and shrubs to shield him from the hot summer sun, and she has scattered flowers here and there, and each year birds flock to the Sleeping Giant to herald the coming of Spring. “And there he lies, still dreaming of his beloved Talladega, ‘The Bride of the Mountain.’ …”

Taking to the water

Old lock and dam make for interesting trip

Leon and Debbie Tsimpides of Riverside enjoy an afternoon rowing and sight-seeing along Broken Arrow Creek.

LAKESIDE LIVING & LOGAN MARTIN HOMES, MARCH 2009

Story and photos by David Atchison EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a continuing series written by David Atchison, Lakeside Magazine writer and Daily Home Pell City news editor, about his experiences as he travels down the Logan Martin stretch of the Alabama River Trail. Oh the weather was so much better on this kayak trip from Broken Arrow Creek to Lock Four Slough. My last trip featured cold weather and ice water. I attempted to travel up Broken Arrow Creek, but the creek was frozen over with ice. On this trip, the weather was great and hinted the coming of spring. The warm temperatures brought people out onto the lake in masses, fishing, boating and yes, even kayaking. About mid-morning, Laura, my wife, followed me to Frank and Julie Pounders’ lake home in Riverside. Laura is friends with Julie. The plan was for me to leave my truck there and for Laura to drive me up to Bob and Frieda Wood’s lake home along Broken Arrow Creek. That was where my long yellow banana, a 17-foot touring kayak, was located. Bob was gracious enough to allow me to use his lake property as a launching pad for several of my kayaking trips. He helped me get my kayak to the water’s edge, and we talked for a while. I made a promise to return. I really want

to go up Broken Arrow Creek again when it warms up this spring, if time permits. The one of the best things about kayaking down Logan Martin Lake, which is part of the Alabama Scenic River Trail, is meeting people and forming friendships. It just seems like beyond every bend of the Coosa River, I meet really nice folks. It didn’t take long on this trip to meet more friendly people. As I paddled to the mouth of Broken Arrow Creek, I looked across the creek channel and saw, to my surprise, someone paddling a boat. I turned my kayak and headed toward the couple. It was Leon and Debbie Tsimpides. Leon was paddling a row boat, while Debbie was enjoying the scenery. “We just got married one and half years ago,” she said. When their youngest child enlisted in the Marines, the couple moved from Alabaster to Logan Martin Lake permanently. “We love it, just love it,” she said. “This is actually our third house on the lake.” Leon said a friend gave him the rowboat. Debbie watched the muscovy ducks on the banks and

swimming along the waters’ edge. “Those are our children now,” she said, pointing to the group of ducks on the bank. “They are called quackless ducks, because they don’t quack.” When I got home later that day, I looked the ducks up on the Internet and sure enough, Debbie is right. We said our goodbyes after I took a couple of pictures of them and their ducks and headed to the main river channel. The lake water level was about as low as I’ve seen it this winter. I continued to travel down the river until I heard this strange noise, a sort of beeping sound. It was coming from an area where there was another couple. I soon realized what the strange noise was as I got closer to David and Darnell Wright of Riverside. The couple was walking along the shoreline of the lake, and David had a metal detector. Darnell, dug through the dirt where the metal detector indicated there was hidden treasure, well sort of. “We’ve found enough nails to build Riverside,” David joked. I asked them if they minded if I took their picture and that after I did, I had a

I told them about the time I was getting out of my kayak, only a few months before, when my wedding ring slipped off my finger. I kicked the mud up so bad, I couldn’t see the ring through the muddy water. I let the mud settle, but the ring was nowhere to be found. Our next-door neighbor, Joanie Gann, offered me the use of her metal detector, and about two weeks later, when the water level dropped, I went back to the spot where I lost my ring. Within minutes, I found it. Laura was amazed and surprised when she finally realized I had the ring back on my finger.

14

Darnell showed me an old metal hoe they found with the metal detector that day. She said they really don’t find anything of real value. “But, it’s fun,” she said, jokingly adding, “He doesn’t have me anything for Valentine’s, so we thought we would come out here and find me a ring, but the only thing we’ve found is an old fork and knife.” I continued downstream until I came to old Lock 4. Only the two outer walls of the lock and the rock dam remain of the structure where large barges and boats passed. “It’s been so many years ago,” said James Cunningham, 88, of Riverside, as he recalled the time Lock 4 was in

operation. He was in his early teens when they closed the lock. Cunningham said he remembers watching as the Lock was flooded with water so large boats could continue their journey. “Mostly down river,” he said. “It was very interesting to watch.” Stan Batemon, a former state fish and game warden, said Lock 4 was dynamited, but part of the old lock remains hidden underneath the water. The rock dam, which extended out to the actual lock, is now owned by Darrell and Megan Morgan. The couple and their 4-year-old son, Max, live full-time on the lake, and the rock dam makes a great conversation piece.

16

From Page 14 “I’ve never jumped off of it, but he (Darrell) has,” Megan said. “We love it. It’s pretty unique.” And, she said, the lock attracts a lot of fishermen. Batemon said he thought there were a total of seven locks along the Coosa River. There was also one near Neely Henry Dam, as well. But the locks were blown up with dynamite in 1954. After I got a few pictures of the Lock 4 dam, I headed down the final stretch of the lake to Lock 4 Slough, where Julie and her friends greeted me near the mouth of the slough in kayaks. By the time I made it to Julie’s place, I was pooped, but I’m looking forward to exploring Lock 4 Slough a little more before I continue my trip down Logan Martin Lake, so until then, have a happy and safe time on the lake.

ART BY THE WATER Carol Little: Painting is in her genes

Story by Brandon Fincher Photos by Bob Crisp Along with the blood that flows through Carol Little’s veins, you might find a trace of paint, because it seems painting is a skill that flows through her family’s bloodlines. “My dad was an artist, although he was not fortunate enough to have an art career because he had to work and make a living for his family,” Little said. “I remember him sitting at the dining room table painting on pictures. He mostly did oil paintings, but I developed an interest that way. Plus, I have a family who comes from a European background, so I guess that’s where our artistic background comes from.” She does differ from her father’s style slightly, though, because she prefers using watercolor to paint. “I became interested in watercolor, which is kind of a challenging medium, but I found it to be very interesting because of the color

That is reflected in my paintings. I try to make them really brilliant and have a lot color in them.” She embraced painting as kind of a second career after retiring from the telecommunications industry in 1991. Much like her father, her career and raising her family left her with precious little time to develop her craft, but she

20

painted when she could. In 1997, she faced a lengthy illness, and it was during her recovery she discovered the joy of using watercolors. Little does not like to limit herself on subject matter for her paintings. “Some people just paint horses, and some people just paint cats, but I paint everything. I like to have variety in my life. I do not like repetition.” She said her inspiration for paintings is simply reproducing God’s creations and creatures from her own perspective.

LAKESIDE LIVING & LOGAN MARTIN HOMES, MARCH 2009

Little enjoys using a variety of subjects for her paintings and especially likes painting God’s creations.

Sometimes she will look up Biblical scriptures to help inspire her. Much of her subject matter comes from the pictures the amateur shutterbug has snapped. “I do a lot of photography out in the woods and nature, and I take a lot of trips to Gatlinburg,” Little shared. “I like pictures of old houses and rural areas of the country because I think that’s something that we need to try to preserve to be able to have the pristine areas that God created and not turn them into asphalt jungles.” She said she has a ton of pictures, and when one catches her eye, she will study it for a while and then paint it. “I try not to make (the painting) a photographic representation but rather my own interpretation of the photograph. You can’t hardly mess that up when you’re trying to be creative with something you’ve done,” Little explained. Being able to take the time to paint out in a natural setting is not an option for her because of other responsibilities.

Little’s art can be found at the Artscape Gallery in Pell City and Carriage House Arts and Framing in Odenville.

ART

Little is heavily involved with the Council of the Arts for St. Clair County as well as the Artscape Gallery in downtown Pell City. “(Art) is a very important part of our county and this area. Without art and culture in your community, that doesn’t encourage economic growth,” Little said. She enjoys giving children opportunities to excel in art, which is why the council sponsors a summer art camp for children ages 8-15 and art contests for children, as well. In the past, she has taught art to home-schooled children since she felt many of them did not have a chance to be in a studio

22

From Page 21 environment. Besides her work with the council and gallery, Little and her husband run a small print and frame shop. “I try to help other artists by providing a very cost-effective way to get their artwork printed,” Little said. Despite these other responsibilities, Little has resolved to simplify her life a little more this year to be able to do more painting. Her painting is a very personal experience for her, which is why she rarely takes commissions. “When you paint something and you stand back and look at it, it’s the satisfaction that you’ve created some-

thing that is just beautiful,” Little said. “Of course you can look at it and say, ‘That’s terrible,’ and put it in the pile, but you know the difference. When you do something and you really know it’s good, you stand back and you say, ‘Wow, look what I did.’” To view Little’s artwork, you can see some of it online at www.littleartwork.com or at www.councilofthearts. com. Her pieces can be seen in person at the Artscape Gallery or Carriage House Arts and Framing on Coupland Road in Odenville. Little is a self-taught artist. Who knows why she has an ability others long to possess? “I don’t know what to tell you. It’s just a talent that I’ve got. I can’t tell you where I got it from. Like I said, maybe from my heritage, but when you’re an artist, you just think differently,” Little said.

Little developed an interest in watercolors in 1997 and now uses that medium in most of her paintings.

Previous cleanups have removed tons of debris and garbage, including old tires, from the lake.

Story by Katherine Poythress Photos by Bob Crisp Logan Martin Lake’s annual cleanup is one time of the year when most around the lake join forces to keep special what brought them here in the first place. The 2009 annual lake cleanup is scheduled for March 30 - April 4 this year. The project is spearheaded by Alabama Power’s Renew Our Rivers campaign and the Logan Martin Lake Protection Association, but it relies on community volunteers to get the job done. The annual lake cleanup began nine years

24

ago after employees at Alabama Power raised awareness and concern about an increase in the litter found along and in the Coosa River as well as its reservoirs. “Our mission is to protect the lake and the interests of the folks who live on the lake,” said Bud Kitchin, LMLPA board member and chairman of the Cleanup Committee this year. Now, homeowners and Girl Scouts work side by side to clean up everything along the lake’s shoreline, from bottle caps to truck tires. Last year, despite heavy rains during the Continued on 26

cleanup week, more than 250 volunteers participated, and Kitchin said he expects closer to 400 this year. The LMLPA especially encourages youth organizations to get involved, as it educates them about taking care of their environment and keeping it clean. Former Cleanup Committee Chairman Sam Smith said sections of the lake once plagued by litter and garbage have been transformed into clean and beautiful areas as a result of the cleanup efforts. Last year, the impromptu task force picked up more than 17 tons of garbage. Ten of those tons consisted of tires. “We’re expecting about 25 tons this year, because of the fact that we had a flood and the lake came up so much,” Kitchin said. This year, there will be six collection sites at which volunteers can dump the litter they collect throughout the week: • Clear Creek Marina • Poor House Branch Marina • Riverside Marina • The Yacht Club • Lakeside Landing • Woods Surfside Marina Each collection site will be equipped for cleanup week with a dumpster and a site captain who will pro-

26

vide volunteers with bags and gloves. “We’ll have most everything they need, other than a good sturdy pair of shoes,” Kitchin said. Throughout the week, neighborhood captains will work to galvanize residents to engage in the volunteer effort and start cleaning the shoreline. On Saturday, April 4, the final day of the project, cleanup will begin in earnest. Volunteers are being asked to show up at 8 a.m. to pick up any supplies they will need and return with their bounty at about noon. The Cleanup Committee will organize community group volunteers into crews to travel by boat to the more remote parts of the lake, such as uninhabited islands, Kitchin said, and Alabama Power usually supplies large boats with cranes to pick up larger objects. During the weeks leading up to the cleanup, the Cleanup Committee will have a couple more meetings and seek volunteers willing to donate their time and boats for the final day of the project. They like doing the cleanup at this time of year because it is still winter without being too cold, and the lake is low, Kitchin explained. After the Saturday cleanup, volunteers are invited to return to the Lakeside Landing site for a cookout and live music, to celebrate their success at preserving the lake they all share.

Story by Laura Nation-Atchison Photos by Brian Schoenhals

It’s easier for Keith and Davis Williamson to tell you what they didn’t change in their Mays Bend home than what they did. “We basically gutted it,” Mrs. Wiliamson said, her husband of eight years nodding his head in agreement. They bought their home on Cove Drive in Pell City four years ago, and a year ago decided it was time to take on the job of making it just the way they wanted it. The overhaul was so big that the Williamsons, along with their son, Miles, moved into Mrs. Williamson’s sister and brother-in-law’s basement in Talladega for the duration. It took about six months to complete the work, and the Williamsons are very pleased with the end result. Part of their renovation included relocating a stairway to the downstairs. “There was a stairway going downstairs right when you came in the front door,” Williamson said. “It really didn’t make any sense.” The stairway ran through the middle of the house, basically dividing it in two. The Williamsons didn’t like that, either. The house was built in 1978, and much of the décor reflected a different era in style, and the Williamsons wanted to update that along with making the structural changes. Add to the list turning a boat garage on the ground level into a master bed-

Keith and Davis Williamson chose a lake home with a deep lot and lots of view in the Mays Bend area of Pell City. They’ve been on the lake for four years now.

room suite, and the size of the overhaul becomes apparent. They revamped the kitchen, painted throughout and replaced flooring up and downstairs. Theirs was a project of grand proportions, and they say the results they’re so pleased with are largely due to having the professional help they had from architect Joe Wesley, Talladega builder Graham Davis, tile specialist Terry Hutto, cabinet builder Eddie Wade, and Kurt Freeman, who did additional cabinet work. From the double-door entry the Williams added, along with a brick stoop, the house opens into a large dining area and kitchen. A series of double doors were added along the back wall facing the water to showcase the view — one of the reasons the Williamsons chose their home. “This house was really dark,” Williamson

said. “We knew we wanted to change that.” With plenty of light coming in, the new granite countertops in a design called copper green shine, reflect the glow from orange-red glass lighting globes that hang over an L-shaped work island in the center of the room. There’s a deep double sink set into one end of the island and a single sink at the other end as well. The shorter end of the island is raised and has space for seating three there. On the front of the island facing the dining area, the Williamsons had cabinetry designed to hold their china, with paned glass fronts and lighting inside. They chose maple for the kitchen cabinets, and repeated the same style for cabinets in the laundry/pantry area and in other parts of the house. Hardware for the cabinets is pewter, match-

ing the pewter fixtures on the sinks and complementing the stainless appliances the Williamsons chose. One look at the six-burner doubleoven gas stove, and it’s obvious there are some serious cooks in the household. “Really, we both are,” Mrs. Williamson said. She smiles, saying the kitchen is one of her husband’s favorite changes made in the house. “He still comes in here and says, ‘I love this kitchen,’” she said. Floors in the kitchen and dining area are porcelain terracotta tile. Adjacent to the kitchen is a walk-in pantry and just next to it, a spacious laundry area that also has counter space for appliances, cabinet storage, a sink, a second dishwasher, even a spot for their toy fox terrier, Oscar, to have his own little “condo,” made into the cabinet space under the counter. The room also serves as a great “beverage center, and works as a staging area when entertaining. The Williamsons also put a second refrig-

Walls are a pale yellow, and along the counter area, the Williamsons had beige and brown rectangular tile with green flecks installed in a horizontal pattern. The Williamsons chose a farm-style table and six scalloped ladder-back chairs for the dining room. A partial wall separates the kitchen and dining area from the living room. Walls are the same shade of yellow used in the kitchen. To lighten the room and update it, the Williamsons painted a full wall of built-in shelves and cabinets surrounding the fireplace an oyster white. The Williamsons also lightened up the large exposed beams in the room’s vaulted ceilings and

added inset panels on them. Floors are oak, and Oriental rugs are used in the seating area and the part of the room behind a large sectional sofa. Matching pairs of leather-covered armchairs are used in the seating area and behind the couch. The Williamsons found the chairs in an antique shop in Birmingham and were told they had come from the Tutweiler Hotel downtown The shelves surrounding the fireplace hold many pieces of the Williamsons’ collection of regional art. A favorite piece is a large canvas painting directed by Tommy Moorehead, artist in residence for Heritage Hall Museum in Talladega.

The painting was done in an “art party” Mrs. Wiliamson gave for her husband’s birthday. While Moorehead led the project, guests at the party along with the Williamsons worked on the project during the party. The finished painting features a wine glass and bottle, done in deep purples and dashes of red. There’s a whimsical bird painted in blues and turquoise done by Alexander City artist Lila Graves on another wall, and inside the shelves by the fireplace, several figures done by Alabama folk artist Mose Tolliver along with several pottery pieces made by Joe Williams of Talladega. There are samples of Willliamson’s own photography placed on the shelves, one a photograph of New York’s Guggenheim Museum and another of the Vietnam memorial in Washington, D.C. The wall facing the fireplace holds a colorful fish painted by Allison Wade, who is formerly of Talladega. The placement of the seating area allows for a space behind it in front of a series of windows where cushioned benches have storage underneath for toys kept in baskets for Miles. There’s also a child-size table and chairs where Miles can spread out his favorite toys

– right now it’s race cars – and play. The living room is where the Williamsons placed a large flat-screen television and surround sound equipment, facing the sectional sofa. On the other side of the kitchen and living area is the former master bedroom and bath, which the Williamsons have converted into a guest suite. The bedroom looks out to the water at one end and there’s a deck outside the double glass doors. The room is where the Williamsons placed the king-size bed they built themselves, using two large pocket doors they found in a Birmingham antique shop. A patterned quilt in earth tone shades covers the bed. At the other end of the room, an antique writing table and chair offer work space, and there’s an ample dresser for storing clothes. The Williamsons hung art they collected while on their wedding trip to Italy in the guest room, several architectural renderings of buildings.

36

There’s a spacious bath adjoining, with two vanities, a shower and tub. Cabinets are light blue, and countertops are white marble. Floors are white tile. A screened porch wraps across the rear of the house, and there’s a glass-top table and four rattan chairs along with two oversized cushioned porch chairs and a wide swing for enjoying the Logan Martin view. The new stairway was placed between the kitchen and guest suite. It leads into a den where there’s a deep brown leather couch and chair placed around a muted Oriental rug. A chest and armchair complete the room, along with floor lamps and accent lighting. On one side of the den is the master bedroom and bath. Walls are a soft off white, and a kingsize bed is blanketed with red covering with oversized silk and velvet throw pillows in coral and beige.

“This part of the house we call the adult escape area,” Williamson said. Since renovating their home, the Williams have had child number two, 7-month-old Elizabeth Ann. Another piece in their collection of Alabama art hangs in the room, a large abstract painted in swirls of blues and tangerine and spots of red. The painting was done by Shelby County artist Lonnie Holley and Graves during a Mardi Gras Gala and Art Auction, a fundraiser for Antique Talladega. Floors are bamboo on the lower level. At one end of the master bedroom, which used to be the boat garage, the Williamsons added a huge walk in closet with double-tiered hanging racks and built-in shelving. It connects to the master bath, where granite is used for vanity tops for both sink areas. There’s a jetted tub set in shades of grey and beige tile along with a glassed in shower. The Williamsons used the same maple for cabinets as they chose for the kitchen. There are three other bedrooms on the other side of the downstairs den. One is the nursery for Elizabeth Ann, and across the hall, Miles’ bedroom is fitted with bunk beds dotted with oversized stuffed animals and a place beside it for a miniature racetrack for his growing car collection. The third bedroom is used as an office space. The Williamsons had a desk area built in when they renovated the house. There’s room for a large set of floor-toceiling bookshelves on one side of the room.

38

The Williamsons turned their home into lakeside paradise.

Just off the den, on the front of the house, there’s a door leading to a storage space the Williamsons plan to use as a wine cellar in the future. Glass doors from the lower floor of the house open to a patio underneath the screened porch. A paved drive leads down to the dock and boathouse that holds the couple’s pontoon boat. To the left, the Williamson’s property has a view of the Poorhouse Marina area in Talladega County, and to the right, the bridge over the water for Alabama 34 is visible. They found their home on the lake while they were living in Baltimore — he completing a medical residency in ophthalmology and she finishing a law degree. It was Mrs. Williamson’s mother who told them about the house, so they took a trip to check it out. The view really sold them on buying it, Mrs. Williamson said, plus it could eventually have the space they wanted. Both have their practices in Talladega. Williamson is in practice at Alabama Eye Clinic, and Mrs. Williamson has her own law practice. The house was planned for having space for company, and the Williamsons enjoy the way the renovation works for just that. “We wanted it to be a place our family and friends would enjoy coming to,” Williamson said. Some may come for race events at the Talladega Superspeedway, he said, and others just to take in the beauty of the waters of Logan Martin, do a little fishing or get out on the boat.

Windows on the Water

Company meshes energy efficiency with aesthetic appeal Story by Elsie Hodnett Photos by Brian Schoenhals

Enjoying beautiful sunrises and sunsets, along with simply being able to look out the window and see the water, is one of the many benefits of living on the lake. Durante Windows and Siding offers a variety of windows to help lake homeowners enjoy that gorgeous view. “We do pretty much anything to the exterior of the house,” said Daniel Gallegly, marketing manager for Durante Windows and Siding. Gallegly said Durante Windows and Siding offers Sunrise Windows, which add beauty to the homes as well as energy efficiency. “Replacing windows can save the customer up to 40 percent on heating and air conditioning costs,” he said. “The windows help keep the hot air in during the winter, and out during the summer.” And each window is custom built. “Each window opening is measured, then the window is custom built to that opening,” he said. Continued on Page 42 Daniel Gallegly, marketing manager for Durante Windows and Siding, demonstrates how the lift-out or tilt-in features make window cleaning much easier.

Large bay windows are popular with lakeside residents. The windows also feature a unique lift-out or tilt-in design, making cleaning easier. “That is a very popular feature,” he said. Large windows are popular on the lake. “You can see the lake and the outdoors while inside your house,” he said. “And they really help with energy bills.” Steve and Sharon Bailey, who live along the lake in the Mays Bend neighborhood, had windows and some siding done by Durante. “So far, we love them,” Sharon Bailey said. Steve Bailey said the windows have helped with energy costs, and they let a lot of sunlight into their home. “You can pull them out to clean them,”

Dearly Beloved by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Wooten is a story of a completely dysfunctional but lovable Texas family in the throes of another series of life-changing events. The Futrelle Sisters, Frankie, Honey Raye and Twink are throwing a wedding. Frankie has almost made herself sick with elaborate preparations for her daughter Tina Jo’s antebellum-inspired wedding, but when the prodigal Honey Raye arrives at the church in skintight gold lame’, consumed by hot flashes and a steely determination to right old family wrongs, Frankie’s hope is shaken. It is lost completely when word reaches the church that Tina Jo and her fiance have fled Fayro and eloped. The sisters ultimately pull together to find ways to keep the unsuspecting guests in the pews while a highway patrolman races off to track down the runaway bride and groom. As a last resort, and to the delight of the citizenry of Fayro, Texas, the Sermonettes reunite and sing again.

Music and a meal

Rumors Deli delivers good food and good entertainment Business Owners Melody and Casey Jones wait on customer Danielle Daly.

Story and photos by Blair Hadley It’s 5:45 p.m. on a Friday night at Rumors Deli in Cropwell Commons in Pell City, and a steady stream of customers is quickly beginning to fill up every table in the main dining room. Twenty minutes later, there is not a spare seat in the house as local jazz saxophonist DeLeon Charley launches into his first song of the evening, a jazz interpretation of “Amazing Grace.” For the next two hours, Charley will entertain customers with his unique blend of gospel and jazz as they dine on sandwiches, enjoy the music and quietly socialize. The monthly music night, put on free of charge, has been a big draw to customers like Danielle Daly of Pell City. “I don’t have to worry about my ears being offended,” Daly said as she sipped a caramel macchiato from the coffee bar. “It’s good family entertainment.” Opened in June 2006 by Casey and Melody Jones, Rumors Deli seems to have found its place in the community by combining a comfortable, family-oriented atmosphere with good food and down-home customer service. “I think most people’s comment is going to be the atmo-

48

sphere that they enjoy here,” Melody Jones said. “We’re not fast food. We consider ourselves fast casual. It’s warm and casual. It’s fun.” She also attributed some of the restaurant’s success to the staff. “We’ve got staff that’s been with us for over two years,” she said. “We think that is a big piece of it. We feel like we’re the local ‘Cheers.’” Casey Jones, who formerly worked in medical sales, said he got the idea to open the deli a few years ago as he became unhappy with his job keeping him away from his family much of the year. “I was with a job where I was traveling 100 to 150 nights a year,” he said. “I kept driving by this building, and I felt like it would be a great restaurant. The Lord confirmed that when I went to a Rumors Deli in Cullman. Jones said he got in contact with Annette Harris, the owner of the deli in Cullman, and began discussions about starting a franchise in Pell City, and the rest was downhill from there. “That’s for sure when I knew I had found the right place,” he said. “We’re still the only franchise.” Rumors is a full-service deli, offering a wide range of

menu items from fresh salads, wraps and cold sandwiches, hot sandwiches, panini sandwiches, soups, desserts, and a full-service coffee bar, something Casey Jones said he receives many compliments about. Although Rumors does most of its business during the lunch hours, it also serves breakfast and dinner as well. “We’re basically a lunch place, and what we’re working on is growing the other parts of our business,” Melody Jones said. “A lot of people don’t even know we serve breakfast and dinner.” In addition, Rumors provides a variety of services for its customers, including catering, an on-site conference room that is available free of charge during regular business hours, free wireless high-speed Internet and a delivery service for catering that extends as far as Birmingham to Anniston and Talladega for a nominal fee. Rumors Deli is also available for private parties. “We’re available after-hours for parties and events,” Casey Jones said. “We’re trying to get the word out, but I still think there’s a lot of people who don’t realize we do that.” The deli also makes it easy to feed the family a good meal cheaply, hosting a family night on Tuesday and Thursday where costs are lower on kids’ meals. Along with the Friday night music event, which takes place once a month, Melody Jones said, she attributes the success of the deli to the customers and community it serves. “We want to thank our customers and the community for their support of both our business and this family,” she said.

Turning the corner Getting creative with selling lakeside property Story by Chris Norwood and Carol Pappas Photos by Bob Crisp Although the real estate market remains dismal nationally, there are glimmers of hope for properties around Logan Martin Lake. Lakefront property will always retain some additional value, and property around Logan Martin is obviously no exception, but it is not entirely immune from the forces of the wider market. existing structures, with little new construction to be found. According to Blair Fields, associate broker and minority owner of Fields Gossett Realty of Pell City, “We’re seeing things picking up. We’ve got a lot of people out there looking, but we’re still seeing some problems with commitment. “There are a lot of properties available out there, but people who are worried about whether or not their jobs will be there tomorrow tend not to buy houses.” In mid-February, Fields added, “we saw a big influx, starting about two weeks ago. So we’re on the bright side now, I think. We’re seeing a pretty steady, consistent number of properties coming onto the market now. The foreclosures are still coming, too, but they’re getting snapped up pretty fast right now.” Although the market in existing properties is beginning to regain some lost steam, new construction remains virtually unheard of. “The only construction we’re seeing at all,” Fields said, “is, say, when a contractor has been working on a speculative house and then walks away from it, or the bank forecloses. Then the bank will finish construction so that they can put the house on the market. “But otherwise, absolutely no one is building right now,” Fields said. Prices for lakeside property vary pretty widely right

Turning the corner now, he added. “It really just depends on the situation. “If the house is in foreclosure, or if it’s a relocation, the prices are still going to be pretty low. “Some people are reducing their previous asking prices, but honestly, right now the prices are coming in every which way. “But it’s always tough to tell, you have to wait and see what the appraisers have to say and what the banks are willing to take.”
