JACKSONVILLE — For many who’ve been through what Pooja Revanna has been through, walking across the stage to grab a high school diploma might be considered a success story. But Revenna hopes graduation from Jacksonville High School is just the first chapter in her tale. For many close to Revenna, graduation wasn’t something they were sure they’d see the Jacksonville senior complete. Although a top-10 student, now heavily involved in school government and the Spanish club and Key Club, for two years her teachers and friends didn’t see her in the halls of Jacksonville High. Instead, Revenna

was a regular at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where she spent the better part of her freshman and sophomore years with leukemia. But graduation won’t be the end of Revenna’s story. In the fall, she will attend the University of South Alabama, and has already been admitted to attend the medical school there after her undergraduate studies. Revanna, who has dreamed of being a doctor her whole life, said it’s a sigh of a relief to know she’s already been accepted by her top choice for continuing her studies, but for friends, family and her teachers, just getting to where she is now is a sigh of a relief. It was less than four years ago when doctors told Revanna she had a form of acute leukemia that would keep her

completely out of school for two years as she went in and out of Children’s Hospital for treatment. Revanna said when doctors told her the news, she said she was initially relieved, finally getting a diagnosis for a months-long sickness. The look on the faces of her parents, Muddu and Brunda, when presented the same news, however, made her realize things were a little more serious. “I guess I didn’t know what leukemia was,” Revanna said. “I think I thought it was separate from cancer.” She quickly learned how serious the diagnosis was. Revanna said much of the last two years now seems like a blur, but she does recall late night trips to the Please see REVANNA | Page 10
