ALABAMA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF

ASD coach confident about ’09 season By HEATHER BAGGETT TALLADEGA – Alabama School for the Deaf head coach Paul Kulick is in a position most coaches would envy. Despite losing about half his starters on both sides of the ball from 2008, Kulick said his team could be even better this year. The coach, entering his fifth season at the helm of the Silent Warriors, said the new players could be better than the ones who graduated. “We’ve just got a few players, 19,” Kulick said. “But all 19 are showing real motivation. They’re fired up; they’re practicing hard. All week it’s just been amazing to see them. We’re really looking forward to our first game.” Offensively, the Warriors had to replace five starters, including speedy back Kwentavious Boyd. But the player who has the challenge of following in Boyd’s footsteps is more than capable, according to Kulick. “We found someone to replace him, and that is Tyler Perry,” Kulick said. “He’s bigger; he’s faster than Kwentavious. ASD, we just have an assembly line of fast runners. Chris Moon, one of our coaches for track, he’s done a great job training them to be fast.” ASD also returns speedy tailback Josh Snow, who was a leading rusher for the Silent Warriors a year ago. Jonathan Henderson, a senior and veteran player, will take over as quarterback this season while sophomore Kedarius Slaughter will serve as the backup. “He’s a good one,” Kulick said of Henderson. “He can throw. He can run. Last year he didn’t do so well with throwing and rushing, but now he can do both, pass and rush. So he’s a well-balanced player for us. We also have another quarterback, Kedarius Slaughter. He’s a sophomore, but he’s extremely impressive. We’re starting to work with him just to see how he’ll do. But Jonathan Henderson is experienced and ready to go.” ASD also has Jerrod Cunningham returning on both offense and defense. Kulick said the senior would be a key to the Warriors’ success this season. “Jerrod is a good senior, and he’s also one of the big motivators, leaders of the team,” Kulick said. “He helps get everybody fired up. He’s an awesome leader.” Cunningham said he and the rest of the veteran players are impressed with how quickly the younger players are coming up to speed. “The old players have their habits, their likes and dislikes,” Cunningham said. “The new players are having to work on their confidence, but they’re doing a lot better than we thought they would.” The Silent Warriors return five players on defense, including sophomore Demetric Snider. “We’ve got Lorenzo Burrows and Anthony Robinson, who was the state champ for the 400-meters (in track),” Kulick said. “He’s extremely fast so he’s perfect for a

B.B. Comer

Comer looks to young quarterback By LAVONTE YOUNG

SYLACAUGA – The B.B Comer Tigers are looking to do something this season that they were not able to do a year ago: finish. Last season the Tigers lost four games in which they were leading with five minutes left in the game. All four of those games were against region opponents. Second year head coach Tripp Henderson knows the Tigers are going to have to finish out games if they want to reach their goal of making the playoffs. “What it boils down to is we are going to have to win some of those games that I felt that we gave away last year,” Henderson said. “There were four games we lost in the last five minutes of the game that we were winning in the fourth quarter. That comes with a change of attitude and learning how to win. “If we win those four, we are in the playoffs last year. I think some of those games that we dropped we are going to have to win; we are going to have to close out and finish.” Henderson was impressed with the way his team came in and worked over the summer. He believes the hard work his team put in over the summer will pay off during the season. “We have had a pretty good off-season,” Henderson said. “I feel like our attitude is getting where it needs to be for us to be successful. They came in for the most part and worked hard over the summer, and I think they are starting to see some of the benefits of working hard.” The Tigers have the tough task of replacing quarterback Del Franklin this season. Corey Bradford, a sophomore, will lead the Tigers’ offense this season. “That hurt to lose a kid like Del as much leadership and talent as he had on the field,” Henderson said. “Corey Bradford is going to be our quarterback this year. We are really excited about him. He is a young guy, just a sophomore. He has a world of talent and if he can just pick up the game mentally, he is going to be a good player.” With a young quarterback under center the Tigers will depend on their running game. Senior tailback Michael Hale will be looked upon to lead the ground attack. Henderson believes the depth that he has in the backfield and his experienced line will be their strong point this season. “Obviously I think the strength of the team is going to be the offensive line and the running backs,” Henderson said. “We are going to be a running team, Michael (Hale) is back at tailback, Charley Coleman is back at fullback, Kelsey Bates is playing wing for us, he is going to have to play a few positions before it is all said and done. I trust any of those guys carrying the ball. I think we are going to be all right offensively.” One of the areas of concern for Comer this season will be defense. Last season, the Tigers gave up 30 points per game. “The biggest thing that we have to do is learn how to play defense,” Henderson said. “It comes back to last year. That was my fault. I don’t think I did a good job coaching

fundamentals to them defensively. That is something that we have tried to fix over the last year. I think they have gotten better and are starting to understand what is expected of them and learning how to play the game.” Comer’s goal this season is to make the playoffs. The Tigers have not qualified for the state playoffs since 2001. “Playoffs right now,” Henderson said. “That is our first goal, and we will adjust from there. I feel like this is a team that can make the playoffs. It depends on how much we improve through the season. If they improve as much as they have between last year and now, we are going to be all right.” Comer will kick off the season at Childersburg on Aug. 27.

He is not going to step down to anybody no matter what sport he is playing. Q: What do you do when not playing football? A: When I am in school, I play sports like basketball and baseball. A: Transformers II Q: If you could face one football player, from any era, who would it be and why? A: Brian Urlacher, he is a big dude and I would like to see how hard he hits. Coach sees talent on Cougars team

By JIM SMOTHERS Rick Cahalane (kuh LANE) said he’s “seen more talent at summer practice than I saw in six years in Montgomery,” and he’s anxious to see what he can do with the Central Cougars football program. He’s in his first year at Central, but is beginning his 25th year of coaching, with stints at both public and private schools in Alabama and Mississippi. The last six years were at Montgomery Academy. But he has long-standing ties to Coosa County. He is married to the former Benita Hughes, whose father (the late Ben Hughes) was a vocational teacher for Coosa County’s school system. Cahalane is the fifth head football coach in six years at the school, following Garrett Hagin, Rick Wade, Smitty Grider and Jeff Steers. “We have some talented athletes who need to be taught good football skills,” Cahalane said. “They’ve bought into what we’re doing, they’re working with a lot of discipline and they’re practicing hard. We have 52 or 53 out there, and it’s going well. I couldn’t be happier with the progress we’ve made.” Cahalane said former superintendent Todd Wingard has done an “absolutely unbelievable job” this summer as an assistant football coach. Cahalane was hired after school was out for the summer, and Wingard was especially helpful in contacting families of players and helping get players involved in summer drills. Wingard is also coaching the middle school team. Cahalane is still learning who the players are and what they can do, and several waited until after school started to come out for the team. Several have already caught the coach’s eye and are expected to lead the team this season.

Senior Marcus Judkins has shown real talent at quarterback. Cahalane said he has been very pleased with senior Erick Tolbert and junior Chris Smoot at tailback, and senior Travis Ward on the offensive line. Others standouts at practice so far include John McGhee, Jeremy Murray and Myles Varner. Central opens the 2009 season on the road at Sylacauga on Aug. 28.

Childersburg

Tigers have new coach, playoff hopes By HEATHER BAGGETT CHILDERSBURG – The Childersburg Tigers enter the 2009 football season with a new head coach and a group of seniors who want to end their high school careers on a high note. That group of seniors would like to end their high school career by making the playoffs, and they already know how tough a task that could be. The Tigers haven’t made a postseason appearance since 2002 and have never been past the second round. “We have a pretty good senior group,” head coach Matt Brooks said. “We just hope we can get them headed in the right direction to have a great year and get them in the playoffs. We’d like to do it with this group because it is a good group.” In addition to having missed the playoffs for the past six years, the Tigers play in a tough region with two teams that made deep playoff runs a year ago. With the goal to still be playing football in week 11, the Tigers started fall practice with a mix of veteran and rookie players. Brooks’ has a lot of talent coming back on offense. Cole Limbaugh, a junior, returns as the quarterback after starting at the position for several games at the end of last season. “Cole did a good job for us in the spring and kind of stepped forward in that position,” Brooks said. “He played a little bit last year. That’s going to help going into this year. He’s going to be an 11th grader, so we’re going to have him for two years. We’re expecting Cole to lead our offense and do a good job for us there.” Joining him in the backfield will be running back Fabian Garrett. Garrett led the Tigers in rushing last season, but he won’t be the only one carrying the ball this season. “Fabian Garrett is a guy at running back right now that we’re depending on, of course, to carry a lot of the load for us,” Brooks said. “He’s also going to be a junior, so we’ve got him for two years, and we’re happy about that. Especially at the beginning of the year, we’re going to be working it by committee until we can get into game shape. Cordal Turner is another kid that’s going to have to help us there at the running back spot somewhere. He’s going to be a senior.” With talented running backs, fans of Childersburg can expect to see the Tigers relying on their legs, but Brooks said his quarterback is capable of throwing the ball, and there are some receivers more than able to catch it. “I do think the strength of this team will still be the running game with the running backs that we have,” Brooks said. “Our offensive linemen I think will be our strength first. We definitely think we have the receivers to throw the football. I want to throw it when I want to throw it, not when I have to. That’s the key. I want to dictate that on my own rather than having to throw it when everybody else knows I’m gonna throw it. “Cole can definitely do that. He’s got a great throwing motion, good live arm. We’ll definitely try to mix it up, but

we’ll probably be more run than pass. “At receiver we’ve got a couple of guys that are going to rotate in there and play,” Brooks said. “Corey Reynolds is going to be a senior. He played last year some for us. Jamison Cook is another kid that did not play last year that was out for the spring, and we feel like he is going to be a great addition for us at the receiver spot.” Brooks said seniors Darell Wells, Taylor Sloan and Stevie Lee would help anchor the offensive line. “We do have a little bit of experience coming back,” Brooks said. “We’ve just got to get it in the right spot. We’ve got to make sure we get it right, where it needs to be.” Several offensive players will see playing time on defense as well. “We would like for our offensive and defensive fronts to be as separate as we can, because those guys, it just takes a toll throughout the game,” Brooks said. “If the best running back is the best linebacker, then we’re not going to let him stand on the sideline. Now we do want to have some guys to come in and play because that is rough playing on both sides. “We’re going to have some crossover definitely. We’d like to keep that to a minimum on the front as much as we can. That’s still to be determined if we’ll be deep enough to be able to do that. There’ll probably be at least two or three guys that will have to play somewhat on both sides, maybe not all the time.” Reynolds and Cook could see time in the secondary along with Ronnell McMillan and Wes Brasher. Ryan Baston, Cleve Martin and Garrett will likely play linebacker for the Tigers. “On the defensive front, Taurian Phillips, he’s a senior, Kiefer Sheppard, they’re going to anchor that defensive line for us,” Brooks said. “We’re expecting them to play big for us on that side of the ball.” Despite how good the skill position players might be,

Brooks said the Tigers would live and die by how well the offensive and defensive linemen play each week. “That bunch is going to carry us anyway,” he said. “They’re going to be the group that leads our team and determines how far we go. And if we can get a couple of guys to come around in some certain areas, I think that we have a chance to have a good football team. “A lot is going to be determined by what we do up front, if we can get some guys to come around.” The Tigers open the season against B.B. Comer in Childersburg on Aug. 27.

Coosa Valley Academy

CVA rebuilds, looks for better season By HEATHER BAGGETT HARPERSVILLE – Vince DiLorenzo has years of experience coaching high school football. In his first year calling the shots at Coosa Valley Academy, he’ll work with a lot of people who don’t have much experience playing the game. “Offensively, we’re really starting over,” DiLorenzo said. “The quarterback will be new. Three of the five linemen will be new and really all four of the receivers will be new.” After losing a large group of seniors who started for the Rebels for the past three years, DiLorenzo has had to teach the new players the system during fall practice. “That’s been the biggest challenge so far, installing the offense, trying to get the receivers comfortable with knowing what to do so that they can concentrate on catching the football,” DiLorenzo said. “That’s the biggest problem when you have someone who is learning the offense. They’re more concerned with ‘am I doing the right thing?’ than catching the ball.” Phillip Neal was named the starting quarterback, and he’ll be throwing to a new group of receivers this fall. He is one of six seniors on the team. “We feel like we have some depth at our skill positions,” DiLorenzo said. “We feel like our quarterback Phillip Neal can be a really good one. I think like most teams the offensive line giving Phillip time to throw, opening up run lanes, picking up blitzes. There we’re not very deep. Those guys are working awful hard to make sure we’re in good shape.” Two of Coosa Valley’s seniors are new to the school this year. Zade Kayyali and Will Bullen both transferred to the small private school in Harpersville this fall. Seniors Bud Bliss, Jonathan Webber, Neal and Ricky Ellison are all returning for their final season at CVA. DiLorenzo said he wants the defense to do a better job of stopping the run this season than they have done in the past. “Defense, it starts with the ability to stop the run and being thin in the offensive line means being thin in the defensive line so that’s a concern,” he said. “Because we have what I think is a good group of skill players, I’m optimistic that we can put a defense on the field that can run and that can tackle. I think we’ll have better overall athletes this year on defense than we’ve had in the past.” DiLorenzo added a defensive coach to his staff in Wade Holley. “I think he’s going to do a good job of coming up with a good scheme for our players,” DiLorenzo said. “I think that his package will allow us to adjust better during the game to what we’re seeing as opposed to what coach (Steven) Mackin and I have done the last three years.” The Rebels finished last season with a record of 3-7. They’ll start their journey to trying to beat that record on Aug. 28 when they travel to face South Choctaw Academy.

Wolves putting players in key places

By HEATHER BAGGETT FAYETTEVILLE – The Fayetteville Wolves come into the 2009 football season with a lot of unknowns. The Wolves saw their promising 2008 season crumble when multiple injuries occurred early in the season and took a toll on the entire team. Most of the players from that team graduated in the spring, and a lot of new faces will be seen on the gridiron this fall – including the head coach. Chris Sherbert took over the program in June after former head coach Jimmy Wright took an assistant coaching position at another school. Without having the benefit of spring practice with his squad, Sherbert was left teaching basics of his system in the first couple of weeks of fall practice. In fact, he was still deciding where to put players in the first week of practice. “Offensively, right now we don’t have any positions,” Sherbert said after the first two days of fall practice. “We’re putting people in different areas. We didn’t have the luxury of seeing the kids in spring. We’re experimenting. We’ve got different groups moving around. “After every practice, the coaches get together and talk about moving kids around. We’re just trying to find the right fit for them, where they can best help the team. “Of course everybody wants to run the football. I’ve had to tell them ‘all right guys, the rules are you’ve got to have five linemen.’” And those linemen are the ones Sherbert said will be a big key to how successful the Wolves can be this season. “We really do put a high importance on the offensive line,” he said. “I stress it with my coaches; I stress it with

the kids. The linemen are the heart of your program, the heart of your team. “We’re trying to put a little glory into it because they get overlooked. They don’t get to carry the ball much. As far as my team is concerned, I want every player to put a high priority on that offensive line and let them know that they’re the key.” After solidifying the line, Sherbert just wants to put the right personnel in the right position.

“We’re just trying to match what we’re trying to do offensively and defensively with our personnel,” Sherbert said. “We’re going to be a run-oriented team. Now we would like to throw it enough to keep people honest, but we want to run first and establish that. And we want to be able to throw when we want to, not when we have to.” Sherbert is looking for his seniors to provide leadership on the field. Brandon Bailey, Mikel Harry, Logan Laster, Josh Lumpkin, Hunter Scott, Joe Tinney and Brant Vickers all will likely see a lot of playing time this fall. “So far what I’ve seen, I’m real impressed with Mikel and his work ethic as far as running the football,” Sherbert said. “Brett Autrey, he’s a junior, but I’ve been real impressed with his leadership out there. Hunter Scott and Brant Vickers, I’m real impressed with their leadership and what they’ve accomplished. All the seniors have really stepped

up, and I’m impressed with them.” Sherbert said he’s keeping things simple on both offense and defense. “Defensively, we’ll use a combination of odd and even fronts, but probably our base will be a 4-3,” he said. “We’ll adjust to whatever offenses that are thrown at us. We’ll just try to keep things as simple as we can, gap control, run to the ball and make tackles. “We’ve really been stressing blocking and tackling and making sure that we’re fundamentally sound. We’re putting a high importance on conditioning.” Since most of his players will have to play both ways, Sherbert said conditioning would be key. “I don’t want my kids to be sucking wind in the fourth quarter because a lot of them are going to have to play both ways,” Sherbert said. “We teach them all two different positions. We try to teach them as many positions as we think they can handle. That way, that makes their chances of participating much higher. “To me the key is, especially in 1A ball, you’ve got to find a place for them to play. They’re not going to come out there and sweat and work as hard as they do and not get to play.” The Wolves open the season on the road at Vincent on Aug. 28.

Lincoln

Howard returns to high expectations By HEATHER BAGGETT LINCOLN – The Lincoln Golden Bears enter the 2009 season with a mix of experience and inexperience. How that mix will work together is yet to be seen. The Bears will be without 18 seniors from a year ago, seniors that helped the Golden Bears to the quarterfinal round of the Class 4A state playoffs. Offensively Lincoln brings back standout running back D.J. Howard, but he’ll have a new quarterback handing him the ball. “I think everybody knows we’ve got DJ back,” Lincoln head coach Keith Howard said. “He played really well his sophomore year and then he missed several games last year with an injury. He seems to be full speed right now. He had a great summer. He had great camps everywhere he went. We’re going to lean heavily on him.” Sophomore Sharod Cochran will line up under center for the Bears. “We have a 10th grade quarterback, Sharod Cochran,” Howard said. “His brother played quarterback here the first year I came back.” Offensively the Golden Bears also return wide out Martel Montgomery as well as Branton Hall at tight end. “Our offensive line, I think they’re going to be ok, they’re just not going to be very big,” Howard said. “I think they’ve got a chance to be pretty good; they’re just not very big. We’ve got Courtney Gross, Demarius Lane and Demarco Willis. “Demarco is doing an outstanding job. He’s just not a big guy. Reed Cooper of course, he’s been steady for three years now. He’s done a great job. Dillon Vickers has played two years and now gets the chance to start. I’m really excited to see him get the chance. We’ve got three fullbacks that are working hard and doing well. Rod Green, he’s a 10th grader, Desmond Wills and Damon Collins, and all three of them will probably play on defense as well.” The Bears have added some new players that Howard said would need to step up quickly in order for Lincoln to be successful in their region play this season. “TJ Montgomery has come on; he moved in here this spring,” Howard said. “We’ve got a kid back who has not been on the team, Alex Jemison, he’s doing well. We’ve got a couple of big kids that’s never played. “That’s the situation we’re in. The only size we’ve got is inexperienced. Christian Thomas has not played a varsity football game. Pat Weed has not played in a varsity football game, and those two guys are pretty good size. I think we’re going to be ok. We’re just going to have to stay healthy. We don’t have a lot of depth.” The Bears remain much the same on defense, with more players returning on that side of the ball. “Reed Cooper and Courtney Gross are starting at defensive end right now, but we need somebody else to come on right there, too, because both of those guys start on offense,” Howard said. “You can get away with that a lot in 3A; in 4A

it makes it kind of tough. Damon Collins plays our anchor end. We’ve got three inside linebackers playing two positions. Desmond Wills, Rod Green and Demarius Lane, those three guys are playing inside. And we still have Demarco Willis, who does a good job there, but with his size factor, we’d like to just keep him on offense.” D.J. Howard and Branton Hall will play in the secondary, and Martel Montgomery will play at cornerback. “The other cornerback is kind of up for grabs right now,” Howard said. “We’ve got Alex Jemison and Rakeem Truss, and the one that may get it and surprise a lot of people is Denzel Orr. He’s not played since junior high, and he came out and had a great spring; he had a great summer. He’s worked extremely hard and we’re going to really give him a lot of looks out there.” The Bears started fall practice with a big question mark on special teams. Lincoln featured a strong special teams group a year ago, something that helped them pull out several close games and ultimately cost them late in the season when kicker John Talley was held out of the last few games of the season after tearing his ACL against Anniston in Week 8. “We’re searching,” Howard said. “That’s the one thing that really hurt us last year when John Talley tore his ACL in Anniston. In losing him we lost our kickoff guy, we lost

our extra point and field goal guy. “He won us a couple of games kicking right there at the end of the game. And our punter; when we played Handley that second time we couldn’t kick it deep; they were starting on the 35, 40 yard line, playing on a 60 yard field and we were playing on an 80-90 yard field. Our punting game was awful after John left. That’s something we worked hard on this spring, and we’re going to have to continue to work hard on.” Howard said several guys were competing for kicking

and punting duties as fall practice started. “We’ve got a couple of young guys, Logan Brown and Dillon Pope are right now really working hard to be the extra point guy,” Howard said. “They probably will not kick off because they’re not really strong enough to get it down there. We’ve got Martel Montgomery and Sharod Cochran working at the punting position. They’re working hard; we just need a lot of improvement in that area.” The Golden Bears open the season on the road against Etowah on Aug. 28.

Munford

Balance key to Munford success

By HEATHER BAGGETT MUNFORD – Fans of the Munford Lions won’t see a lot of the familiar names from a year ago on the roster in 2009. Head coach Todd Smith lost 13 “significant starting seniors” from a Lion’s team that finished 5-5 on the field a year ago. With a lot of new people, Smith said his young players would have to step up early and often this season in order for the Lions to have success. “It’s hard to replace Petey Mosley and Montrel Parker, but we’ve got some young guys that have got some talent,” Smith said. “They’re just going to be thrust to the forefront and they’re just going to have to be able to perform. I think if they do that, we’ll be fine if we avoid injuries.” Replacing star running backs Petey Mosley and Montrel Parker won’t be an easy task, but Smith has three players in mind for the roles. “I’m hoping three people: Michael Long, Marcellus Curry and Jesse Lackey,” Smith said. “I’m hoping they step into the roles of Montrel and Petey. “They’ll be both backs and linebackers. Montrel ended up playing linebacker. Petey was inside linebacker last year, and Montrel played outside linebacker. They had pretty good springs and they’ve been working hard this summer, so I’m really looking for some big things from those guys.” The Lions will break in a new quarterback this season as well. “We lost Snap Holcombe, our quarterback last year,”

Smith said. “There’s a guy that I think is going to be the guy, and his name is Wayne Parnell. He’s going to be a sophomore. He’s young, inexperienced, but he’s a good leader even at such a young age. He’s got a little work to do, but hopefully he’ll step in and be that guy. “He’s just a good leader. He’s not very flashy; he’s not the fastest guy. He does have a good arm. We’re expecting him to step up and lead the offense, no doubt about it.”

Smith said he’s working on making the offense a little more balanced this season after being run-oriented in the past. “We need to have a little more balance with the run and the pass,” Smith said. “It’s not a secret we’ve been so predominantly run-oriented. We’re always going to be focused on the run, but I’m hoping this year that we may can throw it a little bit.” On defense, Smith said, Jesse Lackey and Jerron Dorman would likely play the inside linebacker roles for Munford this season. “Jerron, when you’re looking at somebody who impressed you in spring training, he did,” Smith said. “He started last year at tight end and he does a good job there, but defensively he played defensive end last year and he’s stepping into that inside linebacker role. He did a good job during the spring.” Smith started fall practice with approximately 30 players from grades 10-12. “It’s not as high as I had wanted, but it’s 30 tough ones,” Smith said. “That’s how we’ve been the last couple of years. We haven’t had that many, but the ones we’ve had have been tough guys. “These Munford kids, they’re tough. They do what we ask of them and then some.” The Lions open the season with a big challenge in the form of perennial power Clay County. And the schedule doesn’t get a whole lot easier as the season progresses. Munford hosts the Panthers and follow that with a home game against region foe Handley, a team that went to the semifinal round of the AHSAA Class 4A State Playoffs a year ago. The Lions then travel to face Cleburne County. “Everybody’s excited when playing Clay County,” Smith said. “Opening up with them just means you have to be ready to go in Week 1. I know they have a new coach, but they’ve got the same old players, and they’re good. “There’s no doubt we don’t get to ease into the season. We play a tough Clay County team followed by a tough Handley team and then Heflin. There’s no easing into it. We’re going to have to be ready Aug. 28 no doubt about it.”

Pell City

Panthers to rely on defense to carry load BY LAVONTE YOUNG PELL CITY - For the first time in head coach Jay Brown’s seven years at the helm at Pell City he is going to have a young team. The Panthers’ football roster is made up mostly of sophomores and only 17 seniors. “We had a real good senior group last year,” Brown said. “It seems like every year coaches talk about ‘we have a young team’ and I have never said that. So this year we do actually have a young team. The majority of our team are sophomores. “Close to 50 percent of our team are sophomores, but we only have 17 seniors. We usually have in the low 20s but we have 17 seniors. But they are a good group; a lot of them are doing a great job of providing leadership even though there are not many of them. They are doing an excellent job in leadership, which we need.” The Panthers entered fall camp with three quarterbacks that have not seen any game action. “Offensively, probably for the first time since I have been here, we don’t have anybody with experience at quarterback,” Brown said. “We have two sophomores and a freshman, that’s our three quarterbacks right now. The sophomores are Cody Delk and Jonathan Grimes. We have a freshman, Austin Grimes.” With the lack of experience that the Panthers have at the quarterback position, the offensive line will be key if the Panthers are going to be successful. Brown looks for his offensive line to open up holes for the running back and that will take the pressure off of whoever is under center. “We’ve got seniors on the offensive line that are really going to have some great years,” Brown said . “It is going to be real critical for us. I feel like they are going to get better and better. They have really improved since the spring. There are some junior and seniors pressing for some playing that are really doing a good job.” At the running back position, the Panthers are looking for their workhorse, Tarez Elston, to have another great season. Last season Elston rushed for more than 420 yards.. “He has really started for the last two years; he has a lot of catches over the last two years,” Brown said. “He is going to have to have a great junior year. We’ve got Cameron Turner who is a junior playing running back for us. Then we’ve got Tyrone Oden, he will just be a sophomore, but he started last year as a freshman. He is playing running back and receiver. He has a little experience now.” Whoever wins the quarterback battle will have some experienced targets to connect with this season. Seniors Cody Smith and Rontavious Oden will have to make plays for the Panthers this season if they want to make a run for the postseason. “We are definitely going to have to get better once we get game experience on all those guys,” Brown said. “The quarterback position is going to be key for us and really, we are going to take a lot off of him with a good running game and great offensive line play. So that is what we are

working on.” Brown said the Panthers will have to depend on the defense since the offense will be led by an untested quarterback. “We feel like we are going to have to have a great defense, “ Brown said. “We can’t wait for the third, fourth or fifth game of the season to start playing winning defense,

and we know that. We have to get by Aug. 28 where we are playing winning defense because we feel offensively we are going to be a team that is going to have to improve each week as we get a little more experience. line and a player that saw significant playing time last season. “Defensively we feel like we are going to have another good front, “Brown said. “We’ve got some seniors with some experience right there. We have some returning starters in Mike Fomby and Dillon Stewart. Kevin Ash is a senior defensive end that played a lot the last couple of years.” In the secondary Terrell Nettles returns as the Panthers’ corner. Nettles was second on the team in interceptions last season. “Senior Terrell Nettles, I think he is going to have a great senior year. He played in every game last year,” Brown said. The Panthers will have their starting kicker Kegan Gaither back from last season. “Kicking wise we have our starting kicker back, Kegan Gaither,” Brown said. “He is only a sophomore; he started last year as a freshman. We feel like he is going to have a great year as a kicker. We lost our punter, but we have a senior named Dameon Walker who also plays safety for us. We hope that he will do a great job for us. Ragland

Purple Devils ‘hungry’ for wins By GARY HANNER When the Ragland Purple Devils line up Aug. 28 for its season opener against Westbrook Christian on the road, they will do so with a lot of unknowns. Who will step up and take charge at quarterback? Who will get the most carries out of the backfield? Who will come in and fill vacant holes on the offensive line? How will they replace 16 seniors lost to graduation? While those questions are a concern for Ragland head coach Brian Mintz, he likes what he sees in his young players coming in. Why? “Because they are hungry, have the desire to win, a good attitude and the ‘want to’ to prove to themselves they can keep the winning tradition going at Ragland,” Mintz said. That in itself has the ingredients that should make for an interesting season for Purple Devil fans. The Purple Devils enjoyed a 7-4 season and a trip to the state playoffs in 2008. Ragland opened the season at home with a 31-8 loss to Westbrook Christian. They then won three region games in a row as they edged Victory Christian 20-17, shut out Jefferson Christian 47-0 and squeaked by Parkway Christian 17-13. With a record of 3-1, Ragland traveled to Class 4A Hokes Bluff and got hammered 41-7 to end the first half of the season 3-2 but a perfect 3-0 in region play. Next came three more region wins in a row as they defeated St. Bernard 34-6, Jacksonville Christian 43-21 and Coosa Christian in a wild offensive shootout 56-41. The only region loss of the season by the Purple Devils was against Appalachian 28-3. They finished the regular season with a 28-14 win over Class 2A West End. Ragland hosted Spring Garden in the opening round of the playoffs, but it was the Panthers who finished on top, 42-14. Mintz has spent two different stints at Ragland. The first was from 1988-1990. It was Mintz who led Ragland to its first-ever state playoff berth in 1988. The Purple Devils were 6-5 that season. The next season, Ragland was 8-4 and in Mintz’s final season at Ragland, the Purple Devils were 1-9. Mintz moved on to Glencoe where he was head coach for six years and compiled a record of 36-33. He then coached at Southside for four years and had a record of 13-27 before finding his way back to Purple Devil country. Five years ago, the Purple Devils were 9-3, and they slipped to 6-5 four years ago. Three years ago, the Purple Devils enjoyed its finest season ever as they were within one win of playing for a state championship. They went 9-5. The Purple Devils went 8-3 two years ago and 7-4 last year. Mintz’ eight-year record at Ragland is 54-38. His 18-year overall record is 103-98. The Purple Devils will be in Class 1A, Region 5 for the second straight year. Region opponents will be Jefferson

Christian, Jacksonville Christian, Victory Christian, Coosa Christian, Parkway Christian, Appalachian and St. Bernard. Mintz said he believes Appalachian is the team to beat this year, and it was the only region loss by Ragland last year. There were 16 seniors lost to graduation — several from the offensive and defensive line plus the quarterback and running back. Mintz said there were seven or so seniors returning, and they will have to step up and be the leaders. “Anytime you graduate 16 guys, inexperience comes into play,” Mintz said. “A lot of our success will be determined by how fast some of these guys can mature and play well. “Also, how well we as coaches can do to keep them playing in the framework of their abilities to be able to enjoy success. That will depend on the opponent of course. As coaches, we’ve got to try to stay within what we can do.” Mintz said team speed should be decent. “We have a lot of kids who have the want to and desire,” Mintz said. “We’ve got a good group of guys who have a good attitude. That goes a long way sometimes.” Mintz said they would like to win the region. “We have a chance to be competitive,” Mintz said. “We’ve got a lot of growing to do before we can even think about some of that stuff. We have a lot of youth compounded by inexperience. We’ve got a lot of factors and variables that we just do not know right now.” When asked if his guys could compete for the region title with Appalachian, Mintz said he was not sure, but he hoped so. “There are several teams coming on,” Mintz

Aggies hope to make deep run in playoffs

BY LAVONTE YOUNG SYLACAUGA – The Sylacauga Aggies football team has high expectations this season. Last season the Aggies finished the season with a 7-4 record and a first round appearance in the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Class 5A state playoffs. “We have high expectations,” SHS head coach Matt Griffith said. “We went 7-4 and went to the playoffs last year. We have the majority of our football team back.” Sylacauga is beginning to receive recognition from around the state. The Aggies received several votes in the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s preseason poll. Griffith said he knows that his team will have to take it one week at a time. “We have high expectations, and we should,” he said “It has been a while since expectations have been this high. Our kids expect to do well. We have to take it one game at a time and do things right.” Experience is one thing that the Aggies will have this season. The Aggies have senior experience, and Griffith said that experience allows them to do more things on both sides of the ball. “We have eight to 10 kids that are going into their third year starting, and it allowed us to do a lot more things offensively and defensively because they have been in our system for a while,” Griffith said. “So we are anxious, but players have to make plays; that’s the key going into this year. We tell our kids all the time that players make plays, and if they do that, the wins will come.” The senior duo of Josh Crowe and Kelsey Pope will be

back to lead the Aggies offense this season. Last season Crowe led the Aggies with 1,665 yards and 23 touchdowns. Pope was the second leading rusher last season with 956 yards and 13 touchdowns. Griffith believes that the Aggies will be able to throw the football this season. “We have a lot kids coming back,” Griffith said. “Kelsey did a good job this summer. We have a firm belief that we are going to be able to throw the ball this year because he is a three-year starter, and he is making better reads.

“Receiver-wise we are running better routes. Everybody knows that Josh Crowe is a very good running back for us.” The Aggies are loaded with experienced skill players, but they have inexperienced players on both the offensive and defensive lines. Sylacauga will have to replace three of the

offensive linemen that made it possible for them to rack up 2,790 yards on the ground last season. “How our offensive and defensive front gel together is how good we will be,” Griffith said. The Aggies felt that they let games slip away from them in the past. Last season the Aggies lost two regular season

games they believe they should have won. Griffith hopes that his team will learn from those mistakes. “The year we went 6-5 two or three years ago, we could have easily won eight games that year,” Griffith said. “We finished 7-4 last year, and we should have been going into the playoffs at 9-1. We felt like we let two get away. That night the team that beat us was better than us, they made the plays, and we didn’t. “We just hope that we can get in the situation that we don’t make the same mistake twice.” This season the Aggies will try to do something they have not done since 1999: make the second round of the playoffs. “Two out of the last three have been winning seasons and two of the last three, we made the playoffs,” Griffith said. “But we are getting beat in that first round. It is in the back of their minds, and it is in our minds as a coaching staff. We’ve got to get past the first round. We want to get past the first round to see how good we are.” The last two times the Aggies made the playoffs they had to face tough opponents. Griffith believes those two experiences will help his team get better. “Unfortunately, the two years that we made the playoffs we hit the best region in the state,” Griffith said. “That first time it was Russellville; that was the toughest region in the state. Athens, which was from that region, won the state championship. Well, we hit Demopolis (last season) (and they) go all the way to the semifinals before Vigor beats them. There were three teams from that region that could have played for the state championship. “So that makes it tough, but good competition makes you better. The key is to get past the first round and see what shakes out.” The two keys for the Aggies to make a deep run into the playoffs this season are to stay healthy and for his playmak-

ers to do just that. “We don’t have enough depth to have three or four key guys get hurt and still make a run at this thing,” Griffith said. “We will make the playoffs, but we have to stay healthy and our playmakers have to make plays. Those are the two keys.” The Aggies open the season at home against CentralCoosa on Aug. 28.

Mahand tries to establish winning mentality

BY LAVONTE YOUNG TALLADEGA- The T-shirts say it all. “Expect to Win,” that’s one of the things that first year head coach Chris Mahand will be trying to get across to a Talladega team that went 1-9 last season. “That is just something that I want to put at them from the start,” Mahand said. “I bought them some T-shirts that says on the front, ‘Expect to Win.’ That is what I want them to do. I don’t want them to just expect to compete or just to play good or just play well against a very good team until the end. “That is just not good enough, regardless of the situation. We should expect to win. On the back of the shirt it says, ‘Work hard to meet expectations.’ “To win you just can’t sit in the house and do nothing and sit in front of the air conditioning. You have to get in the weight room, you have to come to condition, and you have to come learn what to do.” The former Talladega County Central head coach wants to put a different product on the field this season. Mahand plans to put a team on the field that is going to give everything that they have and compete every time they step on the field. “I am trying to put a different team on the field than what they have seen in the past,” Mahand said. “A team that likes to work hard, that’s going to compete until the end of the game. They have always been athletic; that is what I have always admired about Talladega. I think if we can put it together all at one time, we should have a pretty good season.” One thing that will remain the same from last season is

the size of the linemen. Talladega will not have the biggest linemen, but with coach Leon Bell coming over from TC Central with him to coach the line, they will be prepared according to Mahand. “Overall, we are very athletic,” Mahand said. “Like some people in the state, we are hurting for linemen; linemen are a rare commodity in football. We are going to be struggling a little on the offensive line. But I have coach Bell, who was with me at TC. He is an excellent offensive line coach. I think he is going to get the linemen that we do have ready

to play.” Mahand’s arrival at Talladega generated excitement at a school not known for its football program. Mahand was pleased with the number of players participating in summer workouts. “We have been averaging 60 guys a day and from my understanding, that is outstanding for what they have had in the past,” Mahand said. “I have been real pleased with the way they have been coming out and the boys are ready to win. That is a good thing in itself.” Mahand will have the task of turning around a defense that gave up 33 points per game last season. The head coach said he’ll look for two players to lead the defense this season. “I think Lord willing, defense will be our strong suit,” Mahand said. “If the Lord keeps us healthy, with Quentori Carter coming back and Rhody Greene at cornerback, those two guys played very well in the spring game. They have also been working hard in the weight room, so I am expecting a lot from them with leadership and play on the field. Defensively, we can be pretty good this year if the good Lord keeps us

healthy and the guys continue to work.” Last season, Talladega struggled in almost every aspect of the game. Throughout the off-season, the Tiger coaching staff has been working to help the players learn the basics of high school football. By going back to the basics, Mahand believes it will pay off on both sides of the ball. “Our team struggled as a whole, but we are trying to change the problems that they had last year,” Mahand said. “We are going to try to put more emphasis on getting back to the basics of football: blocking, tackling, running the correct routes, just the basic things that are going to help you win high school football games. “We are not going to get into a lot of schemes right now; we are just going to get good with the basics of football, and I think that will help on both sides of the ball.” Mahand’s first game as the head coach of the Talladega Tigers will be on the road at Smiths Station on Aug. 28.

TC Central

TC Central reloads for another season By LAVONTE YOUNG HOWELL COVE - The Shon Burney era is under way at Talladega County Central. The Fighting Tigers lost several key players from last year’s team, but they showed in the spring game in Oxford that the Fighting Tigers are not rebuilding, but reloading. First year head coach Burney said what his team showed in the spring game is what fans can expect every Friday night this fall. “More of the same,” Burney said. “I think people got a glimpse for the spring game when we played Oxford JV (Junior Varsity). The thing I came out impressed by is that we did not have many mental mistakes. The kids pretty much executed like they were in midseason form. What we are going to do going into the fall is add a couple more formations. “We are going to install a little more of the defense, but it is pretty much a glimpse of what you saw in the spring game is what you can expect from us on Friday in the fall.” The Fighting Tigers plan to play hard from the opening kickoff. The Fighting Tigers will also go to the air more in their new system. “We are going to try to set the tone, whether we are on offense or defense first it does not really matter, so we are going to try to set the tone early,” Burney said. “We are going to try to establish a running game and try to stretch the field with the passing game.” After being in the shadow of his cousin for three years, it is now Cameron Duncan’s time to shine. Duncan saw limited time under center last season, but Burney believes he has what it takes to be a good quarterback. “I could not be more proud of the quarterback situation,” Burney said. “Considering that he had limited snaps last year Cameron really came in and just took in all the little things that it is going to take to be a successful quarterback. I know without a doubt the skill is there. It is just a matter of he and I getting on the same page. I think we are already heading to that point because there was a set in the spring game were it was a miss-alignment on my part for a specific play. He knew right then, and he was able to get him in the right position for the play to work.” Duncan is going to be surrounded by several playmakers this season. The Tigers only lost two skill players from last season’s team. With the skill players the Fighting Tigers have this season Burney has to figure out schemes for his playmakers to do what they do best. “We are blessed with skills,” Burney said. “The offense is pretty much intact except we lost Dion (Duncan), but when you have Tae Chapman, Justin Isom, Isiah Johnson and Trent Swain, everything else is coaching the guys up front. “Every coach knows that it starts and ends at the line of scrimmage. We are making sure that our blocking scheme fits with the skill set that we have, and I think that is what people are overlooking. You have to look at the offensive line first and that’s the same with the defensive line.”

Defense was the calling card for the Fighting Tigers under former head coach Chris Mahand, and that will not be any different under Burney. “That is where I cut my teeth, on that side of the ball,” Burney said. “We take pride in that (defense). We took a little bit more time on offense this spring because the defense that I am accustomed to running is so similar to what they have done here before. We were able to get the terminology down on the defensive end and focus more on the offensive side.” Each week the Fighting Tigers will have a list of goals they are going to try to accomplish during the game. Defensively, the Fighting Tigers are putting a lot of effort into getting to the football and stopping the run. “We take pride in being able to force our will on another team offensively or defensively,” Burney said. “First and foremost, every coach will tell you…we have to stop the run and we are going to fly to the ball, plain and simple. Our pursuit drill is nothing but getting to the ball. It’s not an elaborate scheme or anything. It showed in the spring game; there were times that there were more than three hats on a tackle. That is getting at it.” The Fighting Tigers senior class is leading by example, and they are holding the younger guys accountable this season. “Every place that I have been you always wanted seniors to have leadership on the team,” Burney said. “That was already here when I got here. I can’t take credit for that. There is something about these seniors that holds the younger classman accountable. That’s what you want. This is the community’s team, this is not my team. “The seniors are really taking it to heart that this may be the last time that (they are) playing football. They are going out with the mentality that each and every day they are going to come out and work hard. They are going to get at it in the weight room, and they have really bought in to what we try to do.” For the Fighting Tigers to make their fourth consecutive playoff appearance, Burney believes three things have to happen. “For us to make the playoffs first and foremost, we can’t have injuries,” Burney said. “Second of all, the senior leadership has to continue what they have been doing. Third of all, we just have to take it every play, every game at a time. We have to win that battle. I heard coach (Nick) Saban say this all the time: you can’t look at the season as a whole. You have to look at six second intervals. You have to try to win this play because each play has a life of its own. “I have worked his camps since he has been there, and that is ingrained. That’s what he is teaching those guys. Who better to learn from?” TC Central will kick off the season against Ranburne on Aug 28.

Victory Christian Victory Christian building on last year’s success BY LAVONTE YOUNG PELL CITY - After setting the school record for wins and earning their first ever Alabama High School Athletic Association playoff berth, the Victory Christian Lions are back and ready to do it again this season. The Lions return nine seniors that are hungry to break the school records they set last season. “We’ve got nine seniors,” Victory Christian head coach Scotty Smith said. “Eight of which will be three-year starters, so we are a little more experienced than we have been in the past. This will be the third year that we were here. The first year we were 2-8; the second year we were 8-3 and went to the playoffs. “That was the first time that we have ever been to the playoffs. If everybody stays healthy, everybody meshes well, gets along and has that unity, we should do well.” Last season, the Lions came together at a crucial time, which helped them turn their season around. Smith is looking forward to the challenges that this his team will face this season. “We were 8-2 and lost in the first round of the playoffs, that was the first time that we have ever been,” Smith said. “The key turning point of last year - we were 1-1 at Jacksonville Christian. It was 0-0 at halftime and we had six people hurt. Josh Tinsley intercepted a pass and ran it back for a touchdown. We threw a touchdown pass before that score to beat them 28-14. “We were down in that game 14-7, it’s a region game, and came back to beat them 28-14. We could have easily lost that game and been 1-2. The whole year could have been different, but with a game like that with a lot of adversity and a lot kids hurt I think that was the key to the year. We lose that game, and we are possibly 5-5 or 4-6 rather than 8-2. “Every year it changes, and you have to start all over. We are looking forward to it; we are excited about it. They are good kids, they do what we ask them to do, they play hard, and they just have to find their own personality. Once we do that and everything meshes well, we should be in good shape.” For the Lions, everything starts with veteran quarterback Michael Kirby. The left-handed senior orchestrates the Lions spread offense. Lasts season, he passed for 1,800 yards and threw for 19 touchdowns. “Michael Kirby, this will be his third year starting,” Smith said. “He played in every game and started in every game. He started as a sophomore. He missed two games. “He is a quiet kid. He leads by example. He is a real good kid, and he is accurate. Last season, I think he had 1,800 yards, threw 19 touchdowns and five or six interceptions. He completed over 60 percent of his passes. That is the key right there.” The Lions have three receivers returning from last season’s team, including Jordan Grimmer who led the team in yards. Alex Jernigan and Zach Johnston combined for 58

catches and 737 yards. “Jordan is a pure receiver. He is 6 foot 1, and he caught 30-plus balls for over 500 yards. He led us in yardage. He had five touchdowns, and he is coming back. Alex caught in the low 30s, but he had over 400 yards and a couple touchdowns. Zach Johnston…he is versatile. Last year he led us in all-purpose yards. We are looking to replace (Josh) Tinsley. He was our tight end that caught nine touchdowns last year.” The Lions will also have another weapon in junior running back Cody Ramsey. Ramsey had to sit out last season because he transferred from another school, and Smith is excited to have him this season. “Cody Ramsey wasn’t eligible last year because he transferred,” Smith said. “He is a running back. I plan to split him out also, but he is more of a runner. He is an 11th grader and he has good speed.” Smith said the Lions would be much improved this season on the defensive side of the ball. For the first two seasons, Smith had the roles of both offensive and defensive coordinators. But this season, Bobby Fairley will take over the defensive duties. “Years ago in the late 80s, he coached at Leeds and he is a real good defensive coach. He is going to help our defense out a lot. He really knows his stuff,” Smith said. The Lions hope to give their players

a little more rest this season. According to Smith, the Lions will only try to have four players playing both ways. “A lot of them are going to have to play both ways, like at most 1A’s,” Smith said. “We are going to try to only have just three or four to play both ways most of the time. Sometimes we may have eight or nine depending on the situation.” On defense, the Lions are returning three from last season’s team. With Fairley on board and those standouts from last season, the Lions should be improved. “Jared Hubbard, he is a junior defensive end,” Smith said. “One that has done really good is Dakota Dove. He is a nose guard. He is not real big, but he is quick. “We had a spring game against Vincent, and we beat them 20-12. That was a big deal because the first year we got here we played them – they were in our region when we were 2A. They beat us 41-12. Alex Jernigan, he played safety. He intercepted five passes last season. Jeffery Wood, he will be a senior. Coach Fairley is a big deal that is going to help us out.” Scoring is something that Victory Christian did with ease last season. Smith’s spread offense averaged 27 points per game. The Lions defense was not too shabby either, allowing only 17 points per game, but against Appalachian and Cedar Bluff, the Lions gave up 35 and 42 points, respectively. “Our problem has not been scoring; it has been stopping people,” Smith said. “Part of the reason that we have not been able to stop anybody is because we were playing 9th and 10th graders. Now you look down our roster and we have a lot of 11th and 12th graders that have experience.” The goal for the Lions this season is to host and advance

from the first round of AHSAA playoffs. Smith knows that it will be tough considering they will face three tough area opponents. “We try to go one week at a time,” Smith said. “I hear them talking to one another about it, and they are fired up about playing. Our playoff game last year we got behind and we lost 42-7. It really was not that bad. We would drive, and we just could not get it in. Cedar Bluff was a real good team, they had like 13 seniors. I would say that would be our goal, to get past that first round and maybe have a home playoff game and be one of those top two seeds. Ragland, we never beat Ragland. They are always good. Appalachian and Coosa Christian are going to be good this year.” Smith said the Lions would be successful this season if they accomplish four things. “The big key is unity, togetherness and a good attitude,” Smith said. “Last season we would get down right off the back. If we can improve on that, start faster and maybe get up on some people and everybody will work together, we should have a successful year.” The Lions will kick off the season at Collinsville on Aug. 28.

Winterboro

Expectations run high at Winterboro By HEATHER BAGGETT WINTERBORO – Entering his second year as head coach at Winterboro High, Adam Fossett can’t help but be excited about the direction in which his team is headed. Fans of Winterboro football won’t see a lot of new faces this year as the Bulldogs return nearly all of last year’s playoff team. All those players are now a year older and have gone through a year in Fossett’s system, leading sportswriters around the state to believe they could be top-10 material later this season. The Bulldogs received two votes in the Alabama Sports Writers Association preseason poll. “Overall, I expect us to be a better team,” Fossett said. “I expect us to perform better. I think we know the game of football a lot more. We know the terminology a lot more. The guys know the expectations moreso this year than they did last year. “The goals are higher. Five and five was a good year for us coming off of a 1-9 season, but…there were still things that weren’t acceptable. I told them after the playoff game last year in Linden to remember how it felt to lose. Not focus on it, not dwell on it, but remember how it felt because we don’t want to feel that again.” That won’t be hard since most of this year’s starters played in that playoff game a year ago. Leading the way on offense will be junior Bacardy McClendon and quarterback Josh Taylor. Fossett said there is a senior on the team this year fans may want to pay attention to. “A name that’s been here that’ll be a senior that hasn’t really shown up a lot until last spring is Courtney Evans,” Fossett said. “He’s improved amazingly over the summer with his physical attributes, his character attributes, his leadership; we expect him to be one of our big leaders and one of our go-to guys this year.” Loransa Hardy, David Turner and Cody Strickland return on the offensive line while Jay Vincent and Maurice Mills are back as receivers. “We’ve got some new additions,” Fossett said. “Marcus Jones is going to play. He was just a basketball guy in the past. He’s going to come out and play football. He’s gotten a lot stronger this summer.” Curtavius Gray and Colby Richardson will play fullback for the Bulldogs. “We’re shaking things up a little bit offensively,” Fossett said. “People saw a little bit of it in the spring game. We’ve still got a long way to go, things to put in, but the kids have really soaked it up and want to learn it. “We’ve done a couple passing league days, one in Talladega and two here. That helped a lot in learning the passing game and defending the passing game.” Most of those same players will be playing on defense as well, according to Fossett. “One good thing about what we’re doing here now is our numbers are up,” he said. “We averaged 40 kids at workouts over the summer. That’s just ninth through 12th grade.”

Fossett praised his coaching staff for their work throughout the summer and the school year. Brandon Brown is new to the staff this year while Anthony Jacks and Sheroderick Smith are both entering their second season with the Bulldogs. “Anthony Jacks, Sheroderick Smith and Brandon Brown have a good relationship with the kids,” Fossett said. “They care about the kids and are good at what they do. “Without them this wouldn’t happen. Without them we don’t go 5-5. Without them we don’t have a chance at the playoffs again this year.” The Bulldogs will compete in Class 1A Region 4 once again. Notasulga, Talladega County Central, Verbena and Wadley. Winterboro will face three of the toughest teams in the region (Loachapoka, TC Central and Wadley) on the road this season. “Loachapoka is going to be loaded again,” Fossett said. “They’re probably going to be the team to beat in the region. They’re going to be big; they’re going to be physical. They’re going to come right at you. Those teams are going to be big games for us. “Even though we are a year better, a year stronger and a year more mature, we’re still having to go to their environment to play. I think it’s going to be a tough road.” That road begins Aug. 28 when the Bulldogs travel to face Randolph County.
