LEADERS Bill Wilson/The Anniston Star

From the left, Charles Miller was student body president at Anniston High almost 30 years ago. His son, C.J., followed suit in 2004, as did his daughter, Jessica, a 2009 graduate.

Like father like son … and daughter. The Millers are all about leading Anniston High. When Charles Miller came through in the late ’70s, he was class president and student body president. Fast forward almost 30 years and his son, C.J., was class president his freshman, sophomore and senior year in 2004. And the Class of 2009 has his daughter, Jessica, as student body president. “When I see those kinds of things, it’s one of the most proudest things a father can ever see,” said Miller, 50. He said it’s in their genes. His mother was a community leader, and he tried to mirror her. And then his children, having flipped through his yearbook, tried to mirror him. They did a good job, he said. “I watched them in school,” he said. “The kids seemed to draw to them, the same way it was to me.” Jessica knew she could be a leader when, as a 10-year-old fifth-grader, she stood in front of the crowd at an Anniston High football game, crooning “My Girl” and “Sugar

Pie Honeybunch.” “It’s easier for me to do something in front of large crowds,” she said. Next year, she’ll be on a full ride to Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, which she earned based on her leadership and grades. She plans to major in biology in hopes of becoming an optometrist. She also will continue leading. “There’s more to be done,” she said. She said having a father and brother in leadership roles pushed her. ”It’s just good to be able to be a good example and have everyone look up to you,” she said. After Anniston High, C.J. went to Talladega College, where he was president of his fraternity. He is now a first-year science teacher at Oxford Middle. His sister may look up to him, but he looks up to her even more, he said. “It’s crazy with her being my little sister, but I really look up at her,” he said. “She’s really my motivation. “I can’t drop the ball, ’cause I know she’s watching my every move,” he said. C.J. wanted to keep what his dad started going. But he said he owes it to his classmates for pushing him toward success.

“It was really my classmates that made me believe in myself,” he said. Miller said it’s nice to know that when he left, his kids took over. “Proud of them in every way,” he said. “I just see them not only being leaders now, but I see them as very, very great leaders in the future.” But he said the leadership qualities come from both he and his wife, who keeps everybody ticking. “I’m just a proud mom,” said Vicky Miller. “(I) just do all I can do to encourage them.” Miller said that he believes it’s just something in him and his children that makes them want to lead, something God placed there. Whatever it is, it’s nice to see. “I think it’s the greatest thing ever when you can look and see your children following you and see it coming back,” he said. “It’s like deja vu.” And he hopes it will continue. “Even though we don’t have another (child),” he said, “maybe a grandchild will come along and keep it going.” Contact Staff Writer Michael A.
