ere we go on another great summertime issue! And while I’m thinking about it, a very happy Fourth of July to all! I know there will be lots of celebrating out on the waters of our favorite lake getaway! I did some reading and found out-or refreshed my memorythat the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain took place July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia, declaring the United States independent from Great Britain. After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by the Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its primary author. Congress debated and revised the Declaration, finally approving it on July 4. We were finally our own country and still are, a milestone certainly well worth a celebration. So, as usual, I digress, but I think it’s an occasion worth noting and I know it’s one that will get great attention from our Lakeside communities. Our July issue brings you a visit with watercolor artist Frances Ross, who loves bringing nature indoors with her beautiful paintings. She’s fond of the lake, too, and has spent lots of time waterskiing and enjoying other outdoor activities. Then we’ll take you to the home of James and Patsy Rogers on the Talladega side of Logan Martin Lake, where they tell how they toiled through all kinds of projects to build their dream home. They tell of having lots of help from their outstanding group

Traveling the Coosa

EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a continuing series written by David Atchison, Lakeside Magazine writer and Daily Home Pell City news editor, about his experiences as he travels down the Logan Martin stretch of the Alabama River Trail.

David and his two dogs, Roscoe and Bailey, travel down Logan Martin Lake near Riverside.

always say you never know who you are going to see out along the river, and I recently happened to run across someone I’ve hadn’t seen in many, many years. I don’t know when I last saw David Haynes, but I think my hair was brown at the time. I met David for the first time more than 20 years along the shores of the Mulberry Fork River in North Alabama. David told me he was going to write a book about the Alabama Scenic River Trail, as soon as he finished the 631-mile trek. David was a photojournalist, reporter and editor, and was the first person to teach me how to use a camera and shoot profes6

sional photographs, so we go way, way back. David, who lives in Blount Springs, told me he was going to be in my neck of the woods, paddling down the Coosa River soon, probably, May. “When you get to Logan Martin Lake, call me,” I told David. “I might camp and paddle with you one day.” David’s plan was to paddle the entire 631-mile Alabama Scenic Trail and write a book about his adventure. He said the University of Alabama Press had agreed to publish his book. “It’s going to be in a journal format,” David said. David said by writing his book in a journal style, someone

who wants to take a two to three day trip would know what to expect along that portion of the Alabama Scenic River Trail. After our first encounter, it wasn’t long before I heard from David again. He brought a big bag of dog food to our Pell City bureau office, which I kept for him until he reached Logan Martin Lake in his wooden canoe. David took his two golden retrievers with him on his journey, and he strategically stashed dog food along the trail, so he could feed his dogs. Before I knew it, David was calling on me again. “I’m in Ohatchee,” he said. To be honest, I thought it would be another week before I would hear from David again. He started his trip in May. I gave David directions to a nice camp near Dena’s Cove, where I once camped. I would meet him there the next day. I met David there the next evening, taking him certain items he had requested. It was nice to visit with my old friend and one of my many mentors in the newspaper business. The following day, David paddled and camped in Riverside and the next night, at Sundance Marina in Pell City, where we met again. I paddled with David from Sundance Marina to the Logan Martin Dam, giving us time to catch up on the past 20-25 years. It was really nice, and a great day to paddle. We stopped at an island above the dam and let his dogs loose. Normally he ties their leashes on a long rope tied between two trees. The dogs are able to move around, but it does restrict their movement. The island provided a place where the two dogs could roam and play freely and they loved it. David started his journey at the Alabama/Georgia border. It was almost two weeks later that we paddled together down Logan Martin Lake. “I start looking for a place to camp at four, before it gets dark at eight,” David told me. His wooden canoe was packed with gear, supplies and his two golden retriev-

ers, Roscoe and Bailey. He also carried a carbon fiber guitar his brother Bill designed and built for the trip. “It provided me music and comfort at night,” David said. Among his other camping gear was a Hennessy hammock. “I look for a place I can hang my hammock,” he said, adding that he didn’t need much room to set it up. Hammocks are becoming popular among backpackers, who are looking to keep their pack weight down. David, like my other friends who use hammocks, said they are extremely comfortable. David had a great little saw for cutting firewood. It’s called a Sven Saw. The blade folds up into the handle, and it can really cut wood. It doesn’t weigh much or take up a lot of space. He brought a light spinning rod and reel with fishing lures to catch dinner. David also packed a small solar panel to charge up his batteries for his phone or ipod and camera. He basically packed like he was going on a backpacking trip, although he was able to carry a little more, including a frying pan and fish basket for cooking his fish. “I haven’t been hungry,” David told me when we paddled down Logan Martin Lake. 10

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - July 2012

But before David’s 45-day journey was over, he had lost 28 pounds. After we finished our paddling trip to Logan Martin Dam, we said our goodbyes and I wished David good luck on his journey. I later found out he camped on a large island below the dam on Lay Lake, before U.S. 280. David said along the way, he camped on four to five islands. “I camped out 44 nights in all,” he said. David called me in mid-June to let me know he safely completed his 631-mile trip. I was happy to hear he was safe and sound. Some of the stories he told me were really interesting. I can’t wait to read his book. David said he came close to disaster a couple of times, but his whitewater skills and “Lady Luck” helped him complete his journey in one piece. He said his canoe got pinned below the Class 3 Moccasin Gap whitewater rapid near Wetumpka, and he barely stayed afloat when he tried to cross Mobile Bay one stormy day. The weather was so bad, he had to return to shore and wait the storm out. “We lost three days,” he said, adding that it was the only incident where he lost time because of the weather.

A pair of herons perch on a rock below Logan Martin Lake Dam, where I told my friend David Haynes goodbye as he continued his trip down the Alabama Scenic River Trail.

David said even in calmer weather, it was a battle getting his wooden canoe across Mobile Bay. “You could never relax,” he said. David saw his first alligator between Selma and Camden, near Roland Cooper State Park. He said he traveled close to one area where someone killed a record-sized gator. In another area, he saw a dozen gators within a one-hour period. David said the gators would have their heads sticking up, floating on top of the water. As he paddled downstream, the gators would disappear underneath the water. He said the gators would silently submerge themselves underneath the water when he approached 30 to 40 feet away from them. He said it was eerie paddling across the water, knowing an alligator was just underneath his canoe somewhere. “I had my gun out,” David said. “But none of them bothered us.” He said the biggest gator he saw as a 13-footer that actually followed his canoe. The gator was probably looking for a food handout. Now back at home, David said he is trying to adjust to living indoors, after living outdoors for so long. 12

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - July 2012

“The coolest part of my trip was the people,” David added. He said the further south he paddled the more remote it got and the friendlier the people who approached him got. People offered David breakfast, lunch and dinner. Some people just gave him food. “That didn’t happen everyday,” he said. Two men, one a complete stranger, helped David get his canoe unpinned at the rapids near Wetumpka. David said there were times he did not see any people. He said along one stretch of the Alabama Scenic River Trail, he didn’t see anyone for five days. He said one retired couple actually traveled south to greet him as he finished his journey at Fort Morgan. People were able to keep up with David’s travels on Facebook and at a special website that was set up so he could provide daily updates about his trip. “The people you meet are what make a trip like this so enjoyable,” he said. And I can’t agree with him more. Every time I paddle my kayak down the Alabama Scenic River Trail, I meet great people, and I hope to again on my next trip down Logan Martin Lake. So until then, have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

here is something inherently relaxing about going to the beach. The sun on your back, the sand under your feet, the sound of children splashing in the water, the subtle roar of the rolling tide all work together to make you completely forget whatever you’re stressed out about. Unfortunately for us here in east Alabama, however, the nearest beach is half a day’s drive away. Or at least it was until a few weeks ago, before the beach at Lakeside Park in Pell City opened. And while there are no waves what with it being on a

lake and all, it is the whole beach experience. Pell City Beach, as it is formally known, occupies 300 feet of shoreline between boat docks and the bridge that crosses the lake over to the sports complex. Matt and Emily Powell, along with their son Jace, who just celebrated his first birthday, visited Pell City Beach for the first time on a sunny Saturday about a week after it opened. They will be back. “I walk in the park every day,” Emily said. “This is our first

time visiting the beach, but we’ll definitely be coming back in the future. It’s nice to come out and just walk around.” Kyle and Brian from Birmingham were the same afternoon with a girls 11 and 12-year-old softball team. “One of the parents found it on the internet,” Kyle said. “It sure looks good to me.” Pell City Parks and Recreation Director Harold “Bubba” Edge Jr. said Pell City Beach officially opened June 2, one day later than originally planned. The project initially grew out of a specific safety concern brought forward by Edge and the mayor and city council. “We had swimming areas all over the lake, but we all thought it would be safer to have them in one place. We don’t have a city pool, but we can work with the resources we do have,” namely lots of property next to Logan Martin Lake. Taking advantage of the lake, however, means that everything has to go through Alabama Power and the Army Corps of Engineers, which tends to slow things down. Pell City Police Chief Greg Turley and Assistant Chief Ed Brasher launch buoys to keep watercrafts out of the swimming area.

“It was a vision we had for two years,” Edge said. “Getting all of the approvals we needed took months before we could even get started.” And though the beach is now opened, work is still going on. Pell City Police Chief Greg Turley just finished the paperwork for buoys posting boat-free areas and idle speeds, and Edge said he has just ordered signs stating the rules for use.

Specifically, those rules are swim at your own risk, as there are no lifeguards on duty; no dogs or other pets; no glass containers or alcohol; no jumping off the piers; and pick up your personal trash before you leave. great,” James said. The couple completed their home on Logan Martin in 2007, after James retired from a career as a mining engineer with the state of Alabama and Patsy retired from WDJC radio station.

“She told me about a lot for sale next door to them,” he said. “We got here, and there wasn’t even a sign up, so nobody knew this lot was for sale,” Patsy said. “It was just this jewel on the lake. It was perfect.” James said the price was right, so they bought the lot and, after retiring a few years later, sold their home in Shelby County. “What was miraculous is our house in Shelby County sold the same day we put it on the market,” Patsy said. “That was a God thing.” The couple then set out to construct their three bedroom, two bathroom house with the help of friends and family. “We had great neighbors who took care of us, and we got a local builder,” Patsy said. “We also used mostly local businesses like Marvin’s, and a lot of the furnishings came from friends. It was a group effort.”

James and Patsy Rogers, along with lots of good help, worked hard to create their Logan Martin paradise.

Home “We were going to retire to the beach, but all those hurricanes started to change our minds,” Patsy said. Their minds really changed when James ran into family friend, and now neighbor, Shirley Ferguson at the grocery store. July 2012 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes

The Rogers’ built their home with relaxation and fun in mind.

They took a house plan from a magazine and modified it to meet their needs. “Our neighbor Mack Ferguson can do house plans, so he touched ours up,” Patsy said. “He is a jack of all trades. He made the dining room bigger and did a few other things to improve it.” James said the house was designed so the lake can be seen from every room. “The lot is shaped and the house positioned so that you really get a good view,” Patsy said. They chose hardy board, a stucco-like material, for the exterior to give the home a “Floridian” look, and the builders also added details like curved stairs on the back porch that mirror the arched doorways throughout the house. A majority of the interior work was done by James, Patsy 32

and their friends. “Mack’s brother helped wire it. I painted most all the walls and woodwork. James did all the tile,” Patsy said. “We did our own landscaping, and James and the neighbors did the pier.” The house has ceramic tile throughout, save the master bedroom, to make it “lake-friendly” for their three grandchildren, Emilee, 15; Ally, 11; and Mason, 8; who may come in with wet feet. The walls are painted in light shades of yellow and green. Floor-length windows in the kitchen and master bedroom to bring the lake view inside. “We did without blinds for a long time, because we liked the wide openness and being able to see everything,” Patsy said. “But we finally decided to get them, and we chose a natural wood finish so I wouldn’t have to paint the woodwork.”

Patsy painted the kitchen cabinets herself with gorgeous results.

Patsy said she looks for ways to avoid painting after a bad experience with their white kitchen cabinets. “Oh gosh, painting those cabinets,” she remembered. “In August, in the garage, in the heat, having to sand and put three coats of paint and primer on, and the gnats and the mosquitoes sticking in the paint. We’d have to pick them out. That was a chore.” “If you’ll notice in the kitchen, the cabinets are white, but in the rest of the house, they’re sanded, because I got tired of painting,” Patsy said. “We just put a primer on, and I was sanding with an electric sander, and I thought, ‘This looks pretty good! I think we’ll just do the rest of them like that and call it shabby chic.’” The foyer of the house opens to the dining and living areas, and to the right are the master bed and bath, an office space and a guest bedroom, usually reserved for grandchildren. On the other side of the house is another guest bedroom with a door to one of the two back porches. 34

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - July 2012

Most of the furnishings came from friends and family or are were repainted items they already had, Patsy said. “We bought a few new things like the living room furniture, but a lot of it was given to us from different people,” Patsy said. “It’s called the grandkid-safe, lake eclectic look.” Some of their collected furniture includes a table from a restaurant that closed in Birmingham, an antique wicker sofa, day beds and a variety of tables. Patsy also found some items, like their mismatched cabinet knobs, while bargain hunting. “We tried to stay within our budget of what we sold our old house for,” she said. “We didn’t want to go over that to build this house. That’s why we tried to do so much of the work ourselves.” They also found ways to save outdoors without slacking on entertainment for their grandchildren. The Rogers’ have a used boat and Jet Ski, a paddle boat, a few kayaks and a “Big Bertha” intertube for fun on the lake. “Mason loves to kayak, but the girls like tubing,” Patsy said.

Dish It Up! With Lakeside

Take It to the Top With Tacos Stuff your favorite foods into a shell and it’s done Story and Photos By

LAURA NATION-ATCHISON and DAVID ATCHISON

I

never realized, or had the sense to figure out, how many kinds of tacos there are out there. But when I made the discovery and found out how diverse tacos can be, I realized that you could put just about anything inside a taco shell or a tortilla and it would be great. So I figured there may be others out there unaware of the opportunities with tacos, and here we go. I’m something of a “heat freak” when it comes to food, so beware...you may want to tone down some of my spices and heat levels. I chose to make a barbecued chicken taco, a Baja fish taco and a pork loin taco (my favorite!). Any and all of these can be made any size or with either a taco shell, flour or corn tortilla. I have learned that corn tortillas are lower in carbs somehow, so those who are carb conscious, take heart and read the labels. I embarked on my taco celebration on a Sunday afternoon, and let me tell you, I had tacos all over the place. I think I can simplify the process the next time I want to make three different tacos at a time. I will give hints as to how as we go through the recipes. Mainly, though, I think buying “prepared” shredded cheese, lettuce and for one recipe, cabbage, is strongly advised. But probably the best idea I will bring you is my friend Betty’s long held secret salsa recipe. She’s only given it to one other person in her life, I’m told, her niece, who somehow wrangled it out of her. If it’s a little too hot for you, Betty says just add crushed tomatoes-or diced-until the heat level suits you. So off we go, with some recipes I truly believe you will find outstanding. I did. Also, on the matter of the size of the “holder” you choose, those “mini” taco shells are great for appetizers or “finger foods.” You can totally fix them, or as I often do, set up a “bar” with all the fixings so people can just make them to suit themselves. That cuts the prep time by at least a third, plus it makes the dining experience more personal and pleasing. Baja Fish Tacos What you need: One-half cup sour cream. One-half cup mayonnaise. One fourth cup chopped fresh cilantro.

Our dog Taco has always had a special taste for tacos, perhaps because of her heritage, who knows! So of course, she had to have her very own “Taco sized” taco and even donned her own sombrero for the occasion. From the way she’s licking her lips, you can tell how she felt about her barbecued chicken taco.

One package Ortega Taco Seasoning mix, divided. One pound total of white fish filets, cut into one inch pieces. (I used Tilapia). About two cups of shredded cabbage. Two tablespoons cooking oil. (I used extra light olive oil). Two tablespoons fresh lemon juice. One package (12 count) taco shells, warmed.

What you do: Combine sour cream, mayonnaise, cilantro and two tablespoons of the taco mix in a small bowl and set aside. Combine fish pieces, oil, lemon juice and remaining seasoning mix in a medium bowl, and pour into a large skillet. Cook and stir constantly over medium heat for four to five July 2012 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes

41

minutes until the fish flakes easily when tested with a fork. Fill taco shells or tortillas with fish mixture. Top with cabbage, tomato, lemon juice and salsa. Makes six servings. Barbecued Chicken Tacos What you need: I used a two pound package of chicken tenders-about eight to 10 pieces. Barbecue sauce of your choice. One package tacos shells of your choice, warmed. Eight ounces of prepared coleslaw. One cup shredded Monterrey Jack cheese-I used pepper jack and it gave it an outstanding flavor boost!

What you do: Bake chicken pieces dotted with butter for about 25 minutes, until done, but not dry. Slice chicken pieces into bite sized, add barbecue sauce as desired. Top with coleslaw, cheese, sour cream, jalapeños, avocado, whatever you like. Note: I was really surprised to dis-

cover how good this was! And so easy! And I bet some of those ready to cook barbecued chicken tenders would be a great timesaver! Crispy Pork, Guacamole and Chile Pecan Tacos NOTE: (If you don’t try anything else, try these!!) What you need: A boneless pork loin, one to one and a half pounds, thinly sliced. (The recipe said to do it this way, cook it on the stovetop sliced) but I cooked the pork loin whole for about 45 minutes and then sliced it). One fourth cup finely chopped ancho chiles-couldn’t find any around here, so I used chopped canned green chiles. Two cups guacamole, make it yourself or buy it! Eight flour tortillas, warmed. Crispy taco shells work well, too.

What you do: In a medium sized skillet, heat the olive oil over high heat. Meanwhile, season the pork loin with salt. When the oil is hot, add the sliced pork in batches and

sear on both sides for five to seven minutes until very crisp. Transfer the pork to a cutting board, cut into narrow strips and keep warm. In a small skillet, melt the butter over low heat. Add the pecans and chiles and cook three to five minutes or until the butter starts turning reddish brown. Season with salt and transfer to a serving bowl. Spoon one-fourth the guacamole onto each tortilla or taco shell. Divide the pork among the tortillas and top each with some of the chile laced pecans and serve. And now, for the finale… Betty’s Salsa What you need: One large can crushed tomatoes One large can tomato juice Two fresh tomatoes One bulb of garlic One bunch of cilantro One bunch of green onions Two large yellow onions Eight to 10 jalapeños

What you do: Just put all of it together in food processor and there you go!

Art by the Water

The Nature of Her Art Is Nature Frances Ross uses her paintbrushes to bring the outdoors in By AZIZA JACKSON Photos by BRIAN SCHOENHALS

W

atercolorist Frances Ross has a lot of paintings. Don’t ask her to choose a favorite—it might take a while. But one thing is for sure, and that is the fact that this nature lover loves to bring the beauty of the great outdoors and of its critters right into your home. “I’ve spent my life outdoors water skiing and snow skiing,” Ross said. “I love animals more than people.” Ross said that she often gets inspired from photographs and from her circle of artsy friends who she loves creating with and learning from. She often looks forward to her Thursday morning classes with artist Wayne Spradley. “He’ll say to do all these different things,” Ross said. Ross also paints at Heritage Hall in Talladega with artist Tommy Morehead and paints with other artists Wednesday mornings at her church. Ross doesn’t consider herself an artist, and instead refers to herself as just a local person who loves to paint. But her paintings say otherwise. “My favorite thing to paint is water and snow,” Ross said. “I’ve just always liked it. Especially the way the light plays on it. It’s just so beautiful.” Ross travels and partakes in many outdoor activities including kayaking, canoeing, sailing where she said she feels as free as the birds she paints. Ross’ trip to Israel is one of her most memorable experiences, a journey in body and spirit that let her walk where Jesus walked. “It just gives you chills,” Ross said. “You start out like a tourist and end up feeling like a pilgrim.” July 2012 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes

45

Ross’s use of color and light is impressive.

But when Ross has her feet on the ground and can get some time in to paint, she doesn’t want to stop. Painting doubles as a release for her and a way to express herself creatively.

“It’s all relative,” Ross said. “One man’s meat is another man’s poison.” Ross said people usually like to see things with animals in them. “I painted a dead tree in a snowy field and I decided to paint a red fox in it because it needed some color; it was too bland,” Ross said. “I’ve got to get back to painting more.” Between local art shows, classes with artsy friends, traveling, and of course, a little sailing here and there, Ross plans to paint a lot more and take it one red fox at a time. The family room contains cathedral ceilings and beams that open to a vaulted glass sunroom. The family room also features a bonus room. All four bedrooms are large and have hardwood floors. So are plenty of decorative features inside Brick floors cover the foyer, kitchen, breakfast room and dining room. Appliances include a dishwasher, an electric cooktop and an electric oven. Counterspace is constructed of solid surface countertops. The home is cooled through central air and ceiling fans, and it has central heat for the fall and winter months. The water is

warmed by a gas hot water heater. The home operates on a septic system and its source of water is public. Other features of the property include a laundry room, utility sink and smooth ceilings. Lakeside Agent Spotlight

Every Day Brings Something New for Bill Pharr He’s there to help with the information you need. By KENNY FARMER Bill Pharr

B

ill Pharr has been a real estate agent in Sylacauga for 25 years, but says he had not planned on making it his profession. “I had no idea it would be my profession for 25 years,” said Pharr. “It just became my life.” After graduating from college, Pharr began buying rental properties. He thought it would be beneficial for him to take a few real estate courses. Upon completion of the classes, Pharr went to work for Atkinson Real Estate in Sylacauga. After working for Atkinson for 20 years, Pharr decided to branch out on his own. He began his own franchise of ERA Real Estate for a few years before changing over to his own, independent agency, AREA Real Estate. Pharr says he enjoys working in real estate because each day is “new and different.” He says that new challenges present themselves every day, and every day he meets new people. On of the main things Pharr enjoys about his job is helping people realize their dreams of home ownership. “My most enjoyable customers are first-time homeowners,” said Pharr. “They’re ecstatic to actually

54

own a home.” Pharr says AREA Real Estate provides everything a young couple needs to purchase their first home, from in-house financing to critical information. Pharr says he first meets with prospective homeowners to see what they desire in a new home. He talks to them about what type of neighborhood they want to live in, how much acreage they want, what kind of monthly payments they can afford, the style of home they are looking for and if they are looking for a home that is ready to move into or one that is a “fixer-upper.” Pharr, his wife of 22 years,Jenny; and his 14-yearold son, Blake, live in Sylacauga. They are members of First Baptist Church of Sylacauga, where Pharr serves as a deacon and also sings in the choir. Pharr is the past president of the Talladega County Board of Realtors and was named Realtor of the Year in 1993. He also serves on the board of directors for the Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce. Pharr’s AREA Real Estate have also been proud sponsors of local youth baseball and soccer teams. Pharr’s office is located at 1102 West Fort Williams St. in Sylacauga. He can also be reached through the AREA Real Estate website, www.arearealestateinc.com.
