This month brings the start of some big changes to Community Spotlight. As from next month the magazine will be published by Life Publications. Life Publications is a community based company that is very similar to Community Spotlight. They produce 5 very successful magazines in the Retford, Gainsborough, Worksop and Sherwood areas. I have full confidence that the magazine will still maintain the same focus on the community that it currently has, and I am sure that our readers and advertisers will give them a warm welcome to the area. As for me, I am moving on to conduct some new work in the community and have secured a position working for a local care provider who has strong ties in the community. Information Day

Borough Councillors Lauren Astbury and Jenny Andrews held a successful INFORMATION DAY at the Redwood Centre in Maltby on Saturday the 1st of June. A raffle took place which raised £30.00 that will be sent to the National Autistic Society. The event was well attended with everyone receiving the help and advice requested. Both Councillors Andrews and Astbury would like to thank the people who attended and the agencies that gave their support. They would also like to give a special thanks to the Tesco Community Champions, 'Kate's Kakes' and Carol Stringer for donating the raffle prizes.

Litter Picking Event

In May, members of the Sheppey Neighbourhood Watch Group reported the mounting litter on Thickett Drive and requested a litter picking event on their estate. This resulted in a number of Maltby Town and Rotherham Borough Councillors, officers from the Wentworth Valley Area Assembly, South

Yorkshire Police, children from the Crags School and the TESCO Community Champions giving support to the event.

High Five With Reach

Reach Day Services in partnership with the Full Life Church have re-opened the doors of their healthy eating cafe on a Thursday 11.30-1.30pm at the Full Life Church on Maltby High Street. Our menu includes homemade soup, panini's, salads, jacket potatoes and homemade muffins. All prepared fresh on the day. Reach Day Services offers support to adults with Autism and a learning disability. Please come along to try our new menu and support a valuable learning experience for our team of people.

Maltby Town Council Plan On the 3 August Maltby Town Council will launch the Maltby Town Council Plan. It has taken a year to produce, and to allow every resident the opportunity of having their say 9,000 questionnaires were printed and delivered to every household in Maltby. The Plan takes into consideration the view of our community and highlights the ways in which you would like the town to develop in the future and the steps we can take to make them become a reality.

Rush Round Rotherham 2013

At 6.30 pm on Sunday, 19th May, 12 year old Rebecca Sowden clambered up the steps from All Saints’ Square to the finish line of the Rush Round Rotherham walk, the last competitor to finish the 25 mile route with her neighbour Shakira Hussain, to applause from the Rotary volunteers. She said she had been determined to complete the course despite problems with footwear. Nine and a half hours earlier a staggering 243 people had assembled in the Square, about to set off in the event which this year had seen a coming together of Rush to Walk and the Rotherham Rotary Roundwalk. Some including Rotherham MP Sarah Champion chose the short 3 mile route, the majority went on the 7 or 12 mile Fun Walks, and 47 did the 25 mile Challenge Walk over the full Rotherham Roundwalk course. Prior to the start Sarah Champion thanked everyone for participating and raising funds for the Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, of which she was formerly the Chief Executive, and other

local charities. The Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr. John Foden, accompanied by Mrs. Foden, in the first event of their mayoral year, wished all the walkers luck and officially set them on their way. The day was blessed with ideal conditions for walking and only two starters had to pull out. Most were unfamiliar with the route and were surprised by the wealth of attractive countryside within a few miles of the town centre. Volunteers and Rights of Way staff had done a good job of way-marking, though one or two entrants strayed off course, but found the way back. Rush to Walk organiser Gillian Headon said she was pleased with the final turnout and hoped the event would raise a sizeable sum to add to the £170,000 collected in previous years for local charities by the two organisations. Rotary organiser Michael Sumption praised the work done by Gillian and her colleagues in making the event so successful and thanked all who had helped on the day with marshalling and at the start and finish.

GUIDE Runner Beans

It’s not too late to plant runner beans. My Grandfather always put them in on Whit Sunday, never before, probably because the plants don’t like frost. For the cost of a packet of seeds you’ll get a continuous crop of lovely fresh runners for a month or so, and they freeze really well. Push a bean into a small pot of multipurpose compost and keep it moist. Within a couple of weeks they should start to grow and when you have some sturdy plants with 2 or 3 pairs of leaves they can be planted out in the garden or in deep troughs. If you have a vegetable patch or enough room, construct a wigwam of tall canes (about 6-8 feet) or a row of crossed

canes or even netting for them to grow up. They can be added to flower beds to give a bit of height as long as they have something to climb up. Next to each cane, dig a hole with a trowel - add some garden compost if you have some or even a layer of newspaper (to hold the moisture) and carefully transplant the bean plants without disturbing the roots too much. Water well and keep them moist in dry spells, especially when the flower buds appear and the pods are beginning to set. Happy harvesting - and don’t forget to leave some pods on the plants to dry out and provide you with a fresh new batch of seeds for next year!

SPOT LIGHT On Families Things to do with the kids over the Summer By Abbie Hodgkinson Six weeks with the children could be a trying time even for someone with the skills of Nanny McPhee or Mary Poppins. Here at Spotlight we realise how difficult it can be coming up with ideas for things to do in the summer, so we’ve compiled a brief list of some things to help keep the children entertained during the holidays. We’ve tried to suggest activities that are not going to cost the earth. 1) Visit a local park An example is Clifton Park located in Rotherham town centre. Clifton Park is beautiful, but once you’re finished at the park, head over to the crazy golf and miniature funfare! These are charged separately but won't break the bank.

Know your body #1 - Bunions Anyone who has a bunion will tell you how painful it is. It can also lower self-esteem and cause other medical problems. So what is a bunion ? The simple definition is ‘a bony deformity of the joint at the base of the big toe.’ Muscles in the forefoot tighten up and pull the big toe inwards towards the other toes. This stresses the first joint and the bone starts to stick outwards. The outcome is swelling, tenderness and pain as the joint becomes inflamed. Anyone can develop a bunion, but you can reduce the risk by your choice of footwear. Many fashion shoes are medically dreadful. In particular, pointed shoes encourage bunions by cramping the toes together. Shoes that are too tight can do the same. Ideally, you should have your feet measured when buying shoes. Alternatively, do it yourself. Stand barefooted on a

piece of cardboard, mark the outline of your foot on it and then cut the ‘foot’ out to make a sort of inner sole. You can then use this as a guide in the shop. The ultimate cure is surgery, but this is only used if the deformity is severe and the pain / discomfort affect the patient’s lifestyle. However, you can do some things yourself. At an early stage you can stretch the toes by bending them forwards as if to tuck them under the foot. Do this three times for 20 seconds, twice a day. The improvement will take time. If you already have a bunion, some relief from pain can be got using bunion pads to stop it pressing on the shoe or rubbing against it. They are available from the Clinic and elsewhere. Obviously, you need to make sure there is enough room in the shoe to accommodate the pad comfortably. So let’s recap. We all risk developing bunions, some more than others. We can lower the risk by choosing shoes that do not squash the toes. Remember, bunions are rare in those parts of the world where people go barefoot and the foot is quite free !

Winthrop Park Wickersley Spotlight’s roving care reporter, David Coldrick, was pleased to be invited to meet the founders of Winthrop Park in Wickersley. We know that Spotlight readers with health needs, their care givers and family members will all particularly benefit from this remarkable local facility but absolutely everyone will also enjoy it so do add it to your list of places to see: A Local Secret Revealed The poet Alfred Austin once said ‘Show me your garden and I will show you what you are’. So, if you have a garden, what does yours say about you? Winthrop Park is unique and says a lot about commitment, generosity and the sort of caring spirit which enhances people’s lives. I only discovered the Park recently, following a roadside sign for the tea room and gift shop. There are advantages to being partial to a bit of cake. So I drove down Second Lane in Wickersley, with its well-clipped hedges, and unexpectedly found the Park and its superb facilities. It had a footfall

of around 9,600 people last year, based mostly on word of mouth recommendation. It is obviously a great success but what is it all about? And who can benefit from visiting? The Vision for Winthrop Park In 1999 David Bowser had a stroke and was advised by Rotherham Hospital to rest. But as a bit of a, self-confessed, workaholic he decided to ‘sort of rest’ by setting himself achievable goals towards recovery. He was soon back in his garden and going on walks partaking of ‘nature therapy’ along with his wife Carol. The positive experience of a bit of an extra challenge undertaken each day and an enhanced appreciation of all the senses inspired their vision for developing a local nature therapy park for all the community. And vision it was. The chosen site was unpromising… Lots of Hard Work and a Royal Visit! On my first visit I bumped into one of the original volunteers, Peter, who explained a little of the background of the early days. ‘Back in 2003 the site of the park was a derelict sewerage works. David and Carol bought it and it is now owned by the charity they founded. Amongst other things, back at the start, it was full of 18 tonnes of scrap metal and a large collection of left boots.’ Worse

still I was told that about two and a half thousand sapling trees had to be plucked out by hand. Otherwise Winthrop Park would have fast become Winthrop wilderness! The land was cleared, landscaping took place and the park opened in July 2005. There are now over 60 volunteers involved. David and Carol are modest people and were surprised to receive the Queens Award for Voluntary Service. ‘I thought it was a joke at first’ said David. ‘Someone rang me up and said, Princess Anne, wanted to visit. It was a great honour but unexpected.’ Despite the official accolades they focus more on the personal stories of how the Park has touched and changed lives. The Layout of Winthrop Park Winthrop Park is designed so you cannot see it all at once. The more times you visit the more you see. It unfolds as you go around. A particularly sheltered area, with willows and seats, has a New Zealand theme based on the unfurling fern, called Ponga in Maori, which is associated with new life. The gardens contain water features and sculptures, enhancing positive feelings and there are many plants and herbs with health links, for example aspirin originates in willow bark and others were used in compresses for wounds and as sources of important oils. Blocks of colour are used to improve visual contrasts which are important to assist the experience of those with limited sight. This is complemented by different styles ranging from lively verdant green areas to the rocky, peaceful, Japanese garden. A Park Which is Really About its Visitors I was told the story of one elderly lady who had become reclusive through illness. She had to be persuaded to leave her relative’s car and take a seat on a wheelchair provided by the park. She agreed to ‘give it five minutes’. But when she got to a hedge, carefully planned at wheelchair height, she announced she could smell a herb that reminded her of her mother. She started talking about her family and much else besides. Two and a half hours later, after talking to everyone she met in the park, in Chattaways Tearoom and in the Curiosity Shop she left – much happier - as she had effectively left her illness at the gate and was uplifted by nature and reminiscence. Carol observed that ‘It is not only what happens to people when they are here. It is what happens

when they have left. If you are stuck inside four walls you will not have much conversation. But people who have left here always have plenty to talk about. For those with memory issues, Winthrop Park is maybe nature’s equivalent to ‘Singing for the Brain’. Of Costs and Cakes and Much, Much, More… Winthrop Park costs about £60,000 a year to upkeep, it gets no grants and no entry charge is made. Carol gives humorous talks on the birth and development of the Park - far and wide - and loads of other activities support of the Park. You can buy plants, have tea and cakes on the veranda of Chataways if it is sunny or inside if not. The smell of freshly cooked cakes is amazing and food is cooked to order so if you need gluten free that is available. You can visit the gift shop, attend one of its art and collectable sales, or hold a life celebration in the Atrium which is a pleasant, light filled, building overlooking the Park. Many groups also use the Atrium during the week. It is disability friendly throughout and staff are trained to be inclusive of all. Take a trip. Its local and you will love it!
