WICKERSLEY SCHOOL FUNDRAISING Back in September 2012 Spotlight reported on an inspirational fundraising venture by Wickersley School & Sports College. We now want to bring this back to the attention of S66 residents. For the full article please see page 10 of our September 2012 back issue (viewable on our website). A number of students will be travelling to a South African township, Zwide nr. Port Elizabeth where they will be constructing a rainwater harvesting system, planting trees and sustainable crops. What this means to their community is that the children won’t have to walk miles to collect water to irrigate their land and will therefore be able to spend more time in their school, being educated.

What is Work Club? It is a place for people who are out of work to network with others in the same position, whilst having the facilities available to search the current local job market and get any support required through this process. There will be internet access for job searches. Links to training and volunteering opportunities will also be available. This information is being provided early so that you can plan and organise to enter the following competitions. Maltby Town Council’s Garden Competition: This will be judged w/c Monday 29 July 2013. The four categories will be Garden, Patio/Yard, Basket and Container. Maltby Town Council’s Allotment Competition: This will be judged w/c Monday 12 August 2013. More information will be provided soon. Maltby Town Council’s Horticultural Show: Information will be provided shortly but it will take place towards the end of August/beginning of September 2013. While the recent snowfall may provide us with lovely winter scenes, it is accompanied by dangers of slips and falls. Many Town Council’s have been seeking government advice on what they could and should do. While being advised that there is no law preventing them from clearing the snow and ice away, a common sense approach should be adopted. If everything is covered by two feet of snow then people know they should take care and nobody can reasonably expect a path to be cleared across a field for example. However, when it comes to places where people may not expect an icy spot, or where access to the council's facilities are required then it is perhaps reasonable to expect to gain

Maltby Town Council access without undue risk. The council is then only required to do what is reasonable under the circumstances. Should the council take on the responsibility of clearing footpaths then it should be borne in mind that they have an obligation to their staff and volunteers as well as to the safety of the general public and in such cases all reasonable care will be taken to ensure the work is completed effectively. But, when it comes to the highways, the council can only intervene with the approval of the Highway's Agency and by using an experienced contractor. To summarise, the town council will do all in its power to meet its obligations and ensure the safety of the residents, but the public are urged to take extra care when traversing through the ice and snow.

Dementia sufferers and their carers in Rotherham & District can now benefit from Memory Cafes run by the local Alzheimer’s Society. They are held at four venues; St Thomas Church Hall - Kimberworth, Montgomery Hall - Wath on Dearne, MyPlace - St Anns and Davies Court at Dinnington. You go back downstairs only to remember in a flash or maybe you are simply told off by your wife like me? ‘In one ear…’ When you do this next view it as a minor glimpse of what memory loss is like. It is disorientating, frustrating, and many other ‘ings’. And of course you still eventually remembered. Or else if you were bad temperedly prompted maybe you experienced a hint of the lack of sympathy people often have with memory issues? So why the name Memory Cafe? Because Memory is about now as well as about back then. But it sometimes needs to be brought alive again in a safe social environment to enable dementia suffers and carers to live life better.
THE IMPACT OF MEMORY LOSS ON THOSE WE LOVE.
Memory loss is deeply distressing to spouses, partners and other family. ‘Why is my mother repeating the same story again and again?’ ‘Why does she insist on carrying that old handbag around with all the time?’‘What is she wearing!?’‘Where have all the door keys gone?’ ‘Why is she accusing me of taking her money? Why is the fridge chock full of pork pies? But for carers it can also move beyond the mildly irritating to receiving constant aggressive comments and even actions. It can mean having to deal with the results of incontinence and much exhaustion and heartache. ‘I knew my husband. Now I don’t.’ If anything can help sufferers and their carers – then it is important we have it here in Rotherham. Drug therapies can often help delay the progress of dementia but human activities also count. That is where Memory cafes come in.
WHAT DOES A MEMORY CAFÉ LOOK LIKE AND SOUND LIKE?
Memory Cafes, are not full of people sitting around the edge of a room which is otherwise filled only with a hushed silence. Far from it! I have had the pleasure of being able to attend and join in a number of Memory Cafes. For a start the room is chosen for being light, airy, accessible and friendly. It is run by Alzheimer’s Society staff and volunteers but set out like a café with tables and chairs, coffee, tea, biscuits and sometimes the odd extra treat from those of us who cannot resist two for one offers of sweet stuff! There is vibrant conversation around the tables. That is not just from the carers, professionals and volunteers present but also from those who suffer from dementia. Memory Cafes hum!
MEMORY CAFES ALWAYS COMPRISE GOOD COMPANY
I have found myself chatting to people who have had interesting jobs all around the world, ranging from engineers to tank commanders, and people with less dramatic but very touching stories of love and care. This is where the sharp end of dementia can, for a time, be blunted in a warm friendly and uplifting environment. It is something everyone involved really looks forward to. Memory Cafes help make new friendships!
MEMORY CAFES SUPPORT DEMENTIA SUFFERERS AND CARERS ALIKE.
And it does also help with the memory. It helps stimulate, encourage, support and amuse. There is no doubt about it the games which are sometimes played make everyone into an active competitor, and as to the music and singing – it is up to you whether or not to join in but most people do – it really can bring back that spark in people’s eyes. Memory cafes are fun! I have seen people arrive, who are suffering fairly advanced dementia, who are extremely withdrawn, but light up directly as a result of the additional company, sing-alongs and the carefully structured and highly enjoyable musical stimulation. The music is often provided by the now famous Lost Chord group based in Maltby. People leave renewed and however long that lasts it is surely for the good.
IS IT ‘REALLY FOR ME?’
Even if you do not normally like ‘groups’ or do not often feel very ‘social’ (which is me frankly) if you are affected in any way then give the Alzheimers Society a ring and have a chat about going. Everyone likes to enjoy themselves and this is what the Memory Cafes achieve in practice. You may even be amongst those who get up to have a dance!

The Alzheimer’s Society dementia Support Workers are also in touch with a wide range of services, other advice centres and care professionals throughout Rotherham. If specialist help is needed they can help you access it. Home visits are also possible. The Alzhemer’s Society also provide Carer’s information and support programmes – a series of workshops for carers of people with Dementia to inform and support the meeting of that crucial role. This year Lent falls on 13 February 2013, and ends Saturday, 30 March 2013. A Christian festival, Lent lasts for 40 days excluding Sundays and represents the recognition of the time that Jesus went into the desert to fast and pray before beginning his work for God. In modern times, Christians often use this time for spring-cleaning their lives as well as their homes and this can involve putting aside more time for prayer, fasting, giving up bad habits or taking up something new. Often simply giving up luxuries is a way of recognising Lent which is the preparation for Easter Week, the most important festival in the Christian calendar. Purple is associated with Lent given that it is the colour associated with mourning and so it helps Christians think about the sadness of Jesus’ death. The other reason is that it is also linked to royalty so it celebrates Christ’s coming as a King. Whether you are religious or not, perhaps Lent is a good time of year to dust off the cobwebs and focus, for a short time, on helping others and improving your own wellbeing.
