DREAM, A New Rotherham Initiative DREAM (Developing Real Economic Activity with Me), is a project for adults with moderate to severe Learning Disabilities. Part funded through the Big Lottery, the service provides support for the development of new skills and gives participants the opportunity to engage in meaningful work type activities. Much of the activity relates to the production and sales of craft related products including clay pots, jewellery, hanging baskets, candles, felt bags, cards, decorations etc. There are other activities available such as making tea, packaging goods and photographing products ready to sell on line, also being involved in setting up stalls and promoting DREAM at markets and craft fairs. In the run up to Christmas over 60 personalised Christmas stockings were made and sold, along with Christmas crackers, wreaths, tree decorations, cards and gift tags.

Dream held in Rotherham Town Centre where they will be selling a range of DREAM products and promoting the service. Their team of staff, volunteers and service users will be available to take orders and explain how things have been made. The project has just 4 members of staff and they rely heavily on a team of dedicated and skilled volunteers who provide quality support for the service users. They have volunteer positions as Enablers, Meet & Greet Volunteers, Gardeners, Minibus Drivers and Escort Volunteers. More volunteers are always welcome, so please do get in touch if you have the passion to make a difference.

What is Work Club? It is a place for people who are out of work to network with others in the same position, whilst having the facilities available to search the current local job market and get any support required through this process. There will be internet access for job searches. Links to training and volunteering opportunities will also be available. MRS DORIS STEVENSON:

On Boxing Day Mrs Doris Stevenson (nee Ingham) who lives in the Queens Nursing Home celebrated her 106th birthday, was pleasantly surprised when the Chair of Maltby Town Council Cllr Jon Carratt, Cllr Jenny Andrews and Cllr Keith Stringer arrived to present her a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the Council. Doris lived in Rotherham until she was five years old when her family moved to Maltby and took residence on Morrall Street. Her father found work at Maltby Colliery and at a later date Doris's Mother and Grandad bought a fish shop on Morrall Street and this is where she worked until she married. Doris had two brothers but didn't have any children of her own. Doris has very vivid memory's of both World Wars and was always a special guest to the Maltby Town Council Civic Service until her health impeded with her attendances. Still very lively and chatty, when asked what her secret is for a long and happy life Doris always replies with the same answer, and it is ‘Trust in the Lord every day and keep your bowels open’. Maltby Town Council in partnership with Maltby Town Council have secured funding from Britvic Transform Your Patch and just before Christmas five pieces of outdoor gym equipment were installed in Coronation Park. The outdoor gym is already being well used and proving a popular addition to the park. Consultation took place with the young people of Maltby to find out what pieces of equipment they would like to see. The gym is for use by all and we hope that all members of Maltby’s community can enjoy and take care of the equipment.

Those who attended the Wickersley Kids Club Christmas party had a fantastic time. The party which was held on Wednesday 19th December was very well attended and that was no surprise. Wickersley Kids Club is a well established after school club/School holiday club based at Wickersley Methodist Church Hall on Bawtry Road in Wickersley. The hugely popular club welcomes children from the local schools and collects them in their two 17 seater mini buses. With over over 400 hundred families registered the group regularly get over 50 children attending on a daily basis. Registered with OFSTED for children aged 3 years to 12 years the group has won awards for their work with children with special needs. No wonder then that such an effort was made for the Christmas party and so many people attended and enjoyed themselves. No doubt 2013 will prove another enjoyable and successful year for this popular kids club.

The celebration of New Year is the oldest of holidays, starting in Ancient Babylon 4000 years ago. Although they had no written calendar, Babylonians celebrated the beginning of the new year on what is now March 23rd. The Romans have a lot to be responsible for and indeed the changing of the beginning of the year from March to January is totally down to them! It could be argued that late March is actually a better time for new year - spring begins, crops are planted and January has little significance other than an arbitrary date. However, January gets its name from Janus, the two-faced god who looks backwards into the old year, and forwards into the new year. The Romans chose to celebrate it at midnight on December 31st and this tradition has continued to today. As well as the change of date, the Romans began a tradition of exchanging gifts on New Year’s Eve by giving one another branches from sacred trees for good fortune. Later, nuts or coins imprinted with the god Janus became more common New Year’s gifts.

To my thinking and experience, they have mainly one thing on their minds, for most of their lives…food, as that is their ‘built in DNA’ route to survival. Nearly all dogs will do just about anything for food, hence the reason that nearly all the training that people do with dogs is with ’food rewards’…it’s not rocket science for dogs! In closing, I have a wonderful example of certain dogs’ intelligence…..we used to look after two black Labradors with www.petshomesandgardens.co.uk and every time we went to their house, Frank, the clever one, would rush out and go straight to a pipe which fed spring water into a stream in their garden…barking wildly all the time...and generally enjoying himself. Pizza turnovers~ - Very easy perfect for any party. Makes 12

Ingredients

Method

500g packet ready roll puff pastry

One flat tray covered with baking parchment Oven gas 4-5 190c 1) To make the pizza sauce, chop the onion and pepper finely put in a pan with the oil on a medium heat.

1 egg 1 onion 400g tub passata ½ green pepper 2 tablespoons cooking oil 2 tablespoons tomato puree Pepper and salt Teaspoon oregano 5 thinly sliced mushrooms 4 slices of ham chopped 250g Grated Mozzerella cheese

2) When the onion is soft add the passata and the tomato puree, stir in well, add the oregano and salt and pepper and leave to simmer for 5 minutes. When cooked take off the stove and leave to cool. 3) Take the puff pastry and roll onto a floured surface about 3-4 mm thick. Cut into 12 equal squares. 4) Beat the egg in a cup and brush the squares. 5) Spoon the tomato sauce diagonally along each square, place on the sliced mushrooms and the chopped ham. 6) Place a handful of mozzarella cheese on each square and in the opposite corners and squeeze them to seal in the filling. Place on a baking sheet. 7) Brush the outside with egg and bake on the middle shelf in the oven until pastry is golden brown and cooked underneath
