The Pike County Chamber of Commerce is hard at work promoting the community to new businesses and providing the assistance necessary to grow existing businesses. Pike County was organized in the Mississippi Territory in 1815, drawn from what was then Marion County. The county was officially formed when Mississippi was admitted to the Union in 1817. Pike’s Peak, Colorado, Pike County was named for Brigadier General Zebulon Pike, who had explored the Louisiana Territory for the U.S. government. The original Pike County included the area that is now Pike and Walthall counties. The city of McComb was founded in 1872 at a time when the South was still in the throes of reconstruction as a result of the Civil War. At that time, the Jackson and Northern Railroad extended its line 105 miles north of New Orleans. The new railroad terminal became the center of the new municipality, which was to bear the name McComb in honor of Henry Simpson McComb, one of the railroad officials. Many pioneer families

moved to Pike County from New Orleans to work in the new railroad maintenance shops. As you explore the following pages, you’ll see that our community offers you the perfect fit for living, working, raising your family or retiring. ike County, located in the hills of southwest Mississippi, marks the halfway point between Jackson, the Mississippi state capital, and New Orleans. As a visitor drives north, Pike is the first Mississippi county upon entering the state from Louisiana. The total land area of the county is 261,760 acres, or about 409 square miles, and it is

Magnolia is the county seat. Summit is in the northernmost part of the county, and Osyka borders the south. A total of 200 homes — varying in price from $13,000 to $1 million — are currently for sale in the community. The median home price in Pike County is around $100,000 to $150,000, which would give the buyer a cozy 1,800-square-foot, three-bedroom, two-bath home. Available homes vary from mobile homes to upscale executive homes with all the bells and whistles. Homes in established neighborhoods come on the market sporadically and usually have quick resale. New subdivisions in the North Pike School District are very popular. Community trends also turn to refurbishing older Victorian homes to help restore some of the historic neighborhoods in town. For information on locating in the Pike County area, contact the Pike County Chamber of Commerce at 800-399-4404.

Pike County is an easy drive of less than two hours from the Mississippi cities of Jackson, Hattiesburg and Natchez, as well as the Louisiana cities of New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Pike County is also on the Canadian National Railroad, with Amtrak service north to Chicago and south to New Orleans. The McComb-Pike County Airport, a general aviation airport, is a modern, 24-hour facility with a 5,000-foot lighted runway to accommodate private and corporate aircraft as well as charter services. Commercial air service is available a short hour and a half away at Jackson, New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Hattiesburg. The pine-covered hills of Pike County are a lovely place to call home. Places to Go,

P

ike County is quickly becoming a destination of choice for all ages, providing a wide variety of recreational and cultural activities for the entire family. Located on the main line of Mid-America, McComb originally had one of the largest car and locomotive shops between New Orleans and Chicago. Therefore, the railroad has always been a large part of the history and culture of the community. The purpose of the McComb City Railroad Depot Museum, which opened in 2003, is to preserve the railroad history of southwest Mississippi through educational means and to promote economic development through heritage tourism. The museum, which is open Monday through Friday from noon to 4 p.m., is staffed entirely by volunteers and includes 892 artifacts, a G-Scale model train and an interactive area that includes buttons that make train sounds and a train whistle. The museum is located at 108 Railroad Boulevard in McComb. For more information, call 601-249-0116.

The Black History Gallery, located at 819 Wall Street in McComb, is a site for investigation, knowledge and study. With a theme of “From Africa, Our Motherland, to America,” the gallery offers a collection and display of African-American pictures, books and other historical materials. The gallery also features local African-American citizens who have made contributions to the city and state. The gallery is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and by appointment. For more information, call 601-684-1130. Located at 325 North Front Street, the McComb Studio of Art and Design Center also houses unique artwork by local artists. For more information, call 601-249-3191. A number of community festivals offer family fun for all ages. The Iron Horse Festival in downtown McComb celebrates the community’s railroading heritage. Held in the spring, the downtown area showcases unique handmade items. Activities include a talent contest, a golf tournament, a beauty pageant and the annual Iron Horse Bar-B-Que www.pikeinfo.com 11

cookoff. The Iron Horse Festival is sponsored by the McComb Main Street Association. Pike County offers outstanding natural beauty; its residents take great pride in their breathtaking lawns and impressive flower gardens. In appreciation of the spring azaleas, the Pike County Azalea Festival features the Lighted Azalea Trail, a Pike County tradition since the early 1950s. Residents illuminate their azaleas with spotlights during this festival, which is sponsored each March by the McComb Garden Club. Festival activities also include historic home tours, flower shows, a juried art show, a 5K run, a golf tournament and a family fun day in the park. In conjunction with the festival, the McComb Junior Auxiliary conducts an annual charity Azalea Ball to fund auxiliary activities. The Flower Lovers Club, composed of members from McComb, Summit, Magnolia and Osyka, conducts the annual Festival of Flowers. Another annual event is the Osyka Daylily Festival, which is sponsored by the Miss-Lou Hemerocallis Society. The Osyka Civic Club sponsors the annual October Fall Fun Fest, and a fall arts and crafts festival is held each September in Summit. The Little Theatre community theatre organization in McComb stages three to four shows each year, and productions include musicals, dramas, mysteries and comedies. Open casting calls are issued before each production. The Pike County Arts Council sponsors concerts and events that feature nationally known entertainers, artists and authors. McComb, the largest town, has an appointed city administrator who works with the mayor and six-member board of selectmen. The county is governed by a fivemember board of supervisors, who appoint a county administrator to oversee the day-to-day operations under a county unit system. Each community also has its own police department. The county sheriff’s department is responsible for law enforcement outside the municipalities and operates a countywide jail. Deputies patrol county roads and communities and respond to 911 calls in their jurisdictions. The sheriff, who is elected every four years, appoints his or her deputies. While there are five separate governing boards in Pike County, including the county board and the four town boards, all government units work closely together for the benefit of all the citizens. For example, both the county and the city of McComb participate in ownership of the Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center and the McComb-Pike County Airport, and all four municipalities and the county supervisors support the Pike County Economic Development District. The various governments also work together on an interjurisdictional drug unit, joint grant applications and support for the county jail. Pike County is a safe, productive and friendly place to call home. Pike County Courthouse in Magnolia is the center of county government.

RETIREMENT

An Attractive Retirement Option

P

ike County is the perfect location for retirees. The following is one couple’s story of why they chose Pike County as the home for their golden years:

We’re retirees, in our mid-60s. We’ve been vagabonds most of our lives, having lived and worked all over the United States and some in South America, too. The place we lived the longest, as adults, was on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, where our children went through school. We retired the first time and opened a seasonal business in Minnesota. We always spent our winters back on the Gulf Coast. When we decided to retire again after 10 years, we sold our business and started looking for our new home. We were looking for an area that would be centrally located between our children, who were now settled in Texas and Florida. We were looking for a place that was green, with rolling land away from the storms of the coast. Our search took us to McComb, and we stayed in Percy Quin State Park. From the first time we drove through this lovely, well-cared-for town, we knew we were home. We visited the businesses and the Chamber of Commerce, and everyone was friendly and welcoming. We looked at lots of homes here, and it took a grand total of two weeks to find the home of our dreams. We’ve found there are many things for a retiree to do here. We’ve become active in Habitat for Humanity, in the Hurricane Katrina relief effort, and in our church. We formed a new Good Sam Camping Chapter, making new friends and having camping fun together. McComb is close to several metropolitan cities; Jackson, Hattiesburg and Baton Rouge are all about 90 minutes away. McComb has plenty of health facilities, doctors and shopping, and there are other choices in nearby cities as well. So, we would say to anyone that is looking for a place to retire or move: COME HOME TO McCOMB!

From the first time we drove through this lovely, well-cared-for town, we knew we were home.

As you can see, Pike County is a wonderful, attractive and fun place to spend your retirement. McComb is listed nationally as a Certified Retirement Community, and that title applies to the entire county. The climate is mild but still offers four distinct seasons that are equally breathtaking to behold. Spring finds the azaleas and dogwoods blooming, with green leaves budding on the trees. In the fall, the changing leaves provide a panorama of color that lasts into the winter. Winter blooms brighten the landscape. January — the coldest month — offers an average temperature of 49 degrees, and the hottest month, July, sees an average temperature of around 91 degrees. Even in January, temperatures often rise into the 70s, so residents and visitors can enjoy outdoor activities year-round. The average annual rainfall is 41 inches, and snow is rare. A favorite pastime for Pike County retirees is golf, available at four courses, three of which are open to the public. Seniors are often offered special rates. The Pike County Arts Council sponsors a year-round calendar of cultural events and entertainers, bringing in nationally known artists and writers to the community. There are public walking tracks, both indoor and outdoor, as well as two health clubs and a Curves for Women that accepts membership from the public. Many of the area churches offer family life centers or other facilities available to members and non-members, and the larger churches all have programs and activities for retirees and senior citizens. There are bridge clubs, literary clubs, garden clubs, service clubs and numerous social organizations that retirees enjoy here, as well as plenty of opportunities for those who like to give back to the community. The Pike County library system is second to none in comparison to other communities of this size, and library branches are located throughout the county. The Institute for Learning in Retirement at Southwest Mississippi Community College offers special courses at special rates to seniors in a variety of topics.

Nature provides a wide array of activities for the outdoorsman, including numerous hunting and fishing opportunities. If you are a resident over the age of 65, you can hunt or fish without purchasing a license. Deer and wild turkey are abundant. Small game, including squirrels, rabbits, doves and quail, is available. Numerous ponds, lakes and streams are stocked with bass, crappie, catfish and bream. For those longing for the open sea, Pike County is only a two-hour drive from the Gulf of Mexico. If you occasionally desire the offerings of a major metropolis, Pike County is within a 90-minute drive of Jackson, New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Hattiesburg. Housing is available in almost any price range; the average price is between $100,000 and $150,000. If apartment living suits you, there are plenty of options, including condominiums for sale or lease. Pike County’s tax structure is attractive to all residents, but especially so for those over 65. If you own your own home, the property is taxed at only 10 percent of its true value. Homestead exemption, which forgives part of the taxes on all owner-occupied homes, is double for those over 65. This means seniors pay no property taxes on homes worth less than $75,000 and only on 10 percent of the value of homes appraised at $75,000 or more. The Mississippi income tax structure also benefits senior citizens and retirees. Pension income, including Social Security, is exempt from state income taxes. Married couples over 65 filing joint returns can annually earn up to $20,000 above their pensions without paying any state income tax. Pike County health care facilities are equipped to provide excellent medical care for both acute and long-term needs. Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center is an accredited acute-care hospital with a trauma center and separate centers for physical rehabilitation, cancer treatment, and cardiac care and procedures. Southwest Regional offers special privileges to senior citizens, both in wellness programs and in expediting their medical care. More than 75 physicians practice in Pike County, home to several longterm-care health facilities and assisted-living facilities. The area is also equipped with an enhanced, countywide 911 system for quick response to any type of emergency. Fire and police protection is also available throughout the county. Pike County can offer everything you are looking for and more as you choose your retirement home. Come home to McComb!

Abundant

Health Care Options Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center (SMRMC) in McComb, established in 1969, serves a seven-county area. SMRMC also draws from two parishes in neighboring eastern Louisiana. According to the most recent Certificate of Need records, SMRMC’s extended service area is a largely rural population of 170,000 individuals. SMRMC has developed an integrated health system that provides comprehensive, state-of-the-art health care to a population that would otherwise have to travel 60 to 100 miles to Jackson, Mississippi; New Orleans; or Baton Rouge for such levels of service. SMRMC includes the 160-bed Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center, which has more than 1,000 employees and 70 physicians on staff; the Mississippi Cancer Institute, specializing in the treatment and prevention of cancer; a 20-bed geriatric/psychiatric unit; and a home health service serving 17 counties. In addition, SMRMC owns and operates nine clinics, including rural health clinics, an internal medicine clinic and an

outpatient rehabilitation center. SMRMC also manages and operates Lawrence County Hospital in Monticello, Mississippi. SMRMC’s mission is: • To attain regional leadership in the health care field. • To provide excellence in health care. • To improve the standards of health care in southwest Mississippi and adjoining Louisiana. • To provide superior facilities and needed services to enable physicians to best serve the needs of their patients. • To generate measurable benefits for the community, the medical staff, the employee, the hospital and, most importantly, the patient. Programs also include inpatient rehabilitation services, neurology, anesthesiology, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, pathology, emergency medicine, general surgery, vascular surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, cardiology, obstetrics/ gynecology, oral maxillofacial surgery, orthopedics, pathology, pediatrics, radiology, psychology, radiation oncology, urology, and ear, nose and throat.

Community

T

hough there are many different religions in Pike County, they blend harmoniously to form one religious community, where people may worship as they choose. The Enterprise-Journal directory lists more than 200 local churches. These represent most of the major Christian denominations, including Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Catholic, Episcopalian, Apostolic, Lutheran, Pentecostal, Mormon, Holiness, Orthodox, Seventh-Day Adventist, Church of Christ, Church of God, Nazarene, Christian and nondenominational congregations. The community’s churches partner in outreach programs that benefit the community. Several churches participate in the McComb Interdenominational Care Association (MICA), which provides food and shelter for the needy. Many churches of various denominations financially assist the Salvation Army in its outreach to the disadvantaged. In addition, area churches support the mission project of the St. Andrews Methodist Church, which provides food, clothing, furniture and rent assistance. The MICA organization meets similar needs. The Pike County Baptist Association, supported by the community’s Southern Baptist churches, provides food, burnout kits for fire victims, and financial assistance for rent, utilities and prescription medications. In addition, most area churches have a benevolence fund to provide extra assistance to the community. The United Way provides funding for a number of health and human services agencies, and an active Habitat for Humanity builds homes for those who cannot afford to do so themselves. Organizations like the Junior Auxiliary, the Rotary Club, the Lions Club and the Exchange Club have their own programs to assist the physically and mentally challenged as well as the underprivileged.
