A History of Steadfast Prosperity

glen

glen glen glen

Edwardsville is generally acknowledged as the third-oldest city in Illinois. Due in part to a thriving Native American population, some of the first European settlers to forge across the Illinois prairies halted in this region. In 1805, South Carolina native Thomas Kirkpatrick constructed a two-room cabin on a bluff overlooking Cahokia Creek; a location within modern-day Edwardsville’s northern city limits. Word of the family homestead’s prosperity quickly spread back east, and by 1809 more settlers joined the Kirkpatricks to form a small village. Edwardsville was forever changed by the arrival of Benjamin Stephenson and Ninian Edwards from Kentucky. Edwards was appointed governor of the newly formed Illinois Territory in 1809, and served as governor of the state of Illinois from 1826 to 1830. He named the Kirkpatrick cabin as the first seat of justice for Madison County in 1812, and in return, Kirkpatrick named the town Edwardsville the following year. Stephenson achieved the rank of colonel during the War of 1812, going on to serve as a congressional representative for the Illinois Territory from 1816 to 1818. Both Stephenson and Edwards erected stately Federal brick homes in a portion of town referred to as Upper Edwardsville, and thanks to ambitious restoration efforts, Col. Stephenson’s house still stands. Referred to as the “Land of Goshen,” Edwardsville continued to prosper. The town was situated at the western end of a vital travel route cutting back across the state to Shawneetown on the Ohio River, which encouraged growth. By the time the Civil War ended, Edwardsville was a thriving town of nearly 2,000, featuring a courthouse, a local newspaper (The Intelligencer), beer breweries and a furniture factory. Around 1890, industrialist N.O. Nelson built a modern plumbing fixtures manufacturing facility, complete with a selection of new homes for his employees. He named the project “Leclaire” after a French profit-sharing pioneer. The E D WA R D S V I L L E / G L E N C A R B O N C H A M B E R O F C O M M E R C E

150-acre complex sat just southeast of Edwardsville’s center. His factory was a model of efficiency, highlighted by exemplary working conditions. The Edwardsville Chamber of Commerce, an advocacy group for local business, was founded in 1924. With the country’s most revered highway, Route 66, flowing right through the heart of Edwardsville, the business community grew, as did the need for employees with a college education. So, in 1955, a group of concerned parents and business leaders from the Chamber of Commerce began a campaign to establish a public university in the Metro East. In 1957, Southern Illinois University opened two residence centers in Alton and East St. Louis. Groundbreaking for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville was held in 1963, and classes began on the new SIUE campus in 1965.

Glen Carbon Literally translated, Glen Carbon means “Valley of Coal,” and Glen Carbon’s history is inseparably linked with this black gold. Glen Carbon was the home of Madison County’s first pioneer settler. In 1801, Col. Samuel Judy, of Swiss lineage, settled on his military grant of 100 acres near the base of the bluffs. The area remained predominantly rural for most of the century, but the increasing importance of the coal mining industry after the Civil War set the stage for growth. Glen Carbon was positioned atop vast coal reserves. The Madison Coal Corporation operated two coal mines and a coal-washing facility south of Edwardsville, which drew an increasing population into these hills. In 1892, 76 residents petitioned the county court, and the Village of Glen Carbon was officially incorporated. Glen Carbon still honors its coal mining heritage with statues and parks throughout the town, but much of its current success is due to the opening of the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville campus. By 1980, Glen Carbon’s population exploded, ballooning 174 percent.

he Edwardsville/Glen Carbon area provides a high quality of life for its residents, which is probably why there are so many options available for people wishing to live in the area. “I’ve been a real estate agent in this area for 36 years, and I’ve seen consistently good resale value. Plus, we’re still moderately priced in comparison with some other areas,” said Bev George, of Bev George and Associates. The classic real estate maxim of “location, location, location” is a large part of the area’s appeal. George notes that 65 percent of residents of the

Edwardsville/Glen Carbon area work in St. Louis. Whether heading across the river for work or play, residents enjoy easy proximity to major commuter routes such as I-270 and I-255. George also cites the outstanding educational opportunities as another of the region’s big draws. “The Edwardsville school district is one of the top-rated school districts in the state. We’ve had a lot of people relocating because they highlight and pick out the Edwardsville district because of its reputation — the sports and music and theater and foreign languages and all of the things that they have

It’s the biggest employer in the area, and it also adds a great college atmosphere to our community.” The presence of the university promotes a vibrant lifestyle for the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon area, with many cafés, bike trails and other amenities that university faculty and students, as well as residents, enjoy. “The bike trails have been a big plus with people wanting to locate here. I have done a lot of business with faculty and staff at Southern Illinois University, and they want to be close to those bike trails because that is a lifestyle that they are really enjoying,” said George. “The other thing I find that is key to growth here in Edwardsville and Glen Carbon is that we have a very vibrant downtown in Edwardsville, with really edgy, fun restaurants, coffee bars and pastry shops.” Newcomers will find a wide variety of homes available, from apartments and condos to large homes and lakeside properties. A range of prices and styles allows everyone to find exactly what they’re looking for. “We have houses very moderately priced at $100,000 and below, up to homes priced at several million,” George said. “While our stock is mostly single-family homes, there are also tower homes, condos, apartments — we have a wide array of college apartments as well — and adult apartments. We also have a big variety of outlying large acreage properties. And we have several waterfront communities in the area, built by recreational lakes.” George is well-qualified to speak to what’s bringing the many new residents to the area. A transplant herself, she’s come home to stay. “I’ve been here since I was in graduate school and I can’t think of living anywhere else. It is a great community.”

Land of Opportunity

C

hris Martinussen, owner of Martinussen Electric Company, is a firm believer that America is still a land of opportunity for those with big dreams and the willingness to work hard. A native of Denmark, Martinussen completed a flooring apprenticeship after high school and later worked for a furniture company. In 1990 he learned about a work exchange program that would allow him to enhance his skills by working in the United States. “I had read a lot about America in school and had dreams of visiting someday, so the chance to participate in the work exchange program was pretty hard to pass up,” he said. The program took him to Los Angeles, and he worked on the West Coast for a month before traveling to St. Louis. A short time later his life took an unexpected turn when he met a young woman, Denise Sczepanski. Clearly smitten with his new love and not anxious to return to Denmark without her, Martinussen married Denise in 1991 and made a promise to her that they would achieve their dreams in America. Feeling challenged by differences in the lifestyle and the way things were done in the job market here, he decided to expand his skills and applied for an apprenticeship program through the St. Louis International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1. After completing an 8,000-hour apprenticeship program he was certified as a journeyman wireman, which helped open the door to more opportunities for work in construction. Martinussen admits adjusting to life and work in America wasn’t easy, but he made the sacrifice of starting over to help ensure a better future for his family. Chris and Denise celebrated the birth of twins Andrew and Victoria in 1994, and Chris became a United States citizen in 1999. Denise is well-known in the community for her years spent as a math teacher for the Edwardsville school district, and Victoria and Andrew, now in college, helped found the Holiday Shores Youth Council, a youth organization focused on giving back to the community. Taking on a variety of jobs while working out of Local 1 for 17 years, Chris perfected his

“I’m happy to call Edwardsville home.” skills and gained valuable experience. Then his life took another unexpected twist when the downturn in the economy led to his being laid off. Unable to find work for the first time in his life, he decided to use the money he had managed to save over the years to open his own business. In 2010 his dream of opening his own business became a reality when Martinussen Electric Company began operations. Serving mostly residential customers, he emphasizes that no job is too big or too small. “We sell, service, and install heating and cooling equipment for homeowners,” Martinussen said. “We are proud to be a Kohler-authorized service dealer and offer installations of Kohler generator systems that provide power for homes in the event of a power outage.” Martinussen adds that his business can handle heating and cooling along with electrical work, a combination that puts his services very much in demand. Further, Martinussen is praised by customers for his fairness and straightforward demeanor. He tries hard to make sure clients understand the scope of each job, codes that must be adhered to, the cost the work will entail, and how long the project will take. “I am fortunate that since my business first opened my list of customers has kept growing,” Martinussen said. “About 98 percent of my new customers are referrals. “I focus on quality, not doing things fast and cheap,” he continued. “I use the best parts available and do the job the way I would want it done in my own home.” Martinussen’s dedication to quality has earned him a reputation as a contractor who can be counted on to complete jobs professionally and on time.

When he isn’t working, Martinussen enjoys fishing, spending time with his family and giving back to the community through several local organizations. “We donate to local food banks and try to help a few organizations close to home that we feel a more personal connection to.” Although adjusting to life in the United States presented many challenges in the beginning, Martinussen says he loves this country and is grateful for the opportunities he has had here. Expressing little interest in returning to Denmark, he says, “I’m happy to call Edwardsville home.”

The Chamber: Connecting Business and Government A supportive group of economic development agencies works actively both to attract business and to help it grow and prosper once it comes to the area. Leading the charge, the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce advocates for issues that are important to businesses owners, sponsoring a government affairs committee that has encouraged productive relationships between chamber members and their elected officials since 2004. Through this committee, events like the Mayors’ Breakfast, Meet and Greet Your Elected Officials, and the Legislative Summit all serve to increase local government’s knowledge of the needs and wants of area businesses. Further, the chamber’s Prosperity Project has helped to

idly, boasting the arrival of several new stores and businesses. A new Sam’s Club has opened, the Walmart has expanded, Jimmy Johns has a new location in Glen Carbon, and the Texas Roadhouse is now happy to call the village home. Village Administrator Jamie Bowden cites the convenience of the region’s interstate highways as a major draw for business. “There is redevelopment around Lowe’s. People like the area. We have two accesses off of 270, and we’re close to I-55 and I-170,” said Bowden. Within 20 minutes of St. Louis, Glen Carbon offers plenty of amenities of its own — many not usually found in smaller communities. “There are a lot of community services and amenities to attract people: housing options, a great workforce, outstanding police and fire protection, and a great school district,” Bowden noted. Bowden also cites the award-winning Madison County Transit (MCT), offering routes that not only connect riders to points within the two communities (including the university), but also connect to the MetroLink system, offering convenient public transport to St. Louis. Not only new residents, but new businesses will find a welcoming environment in Glen Carbon. “The village government is really approachable and I think easy access to a highway plus the additional services offered make it very attractive to business,” explained Bowden. “We also have a small business advisory board, through which we are trying to reach out to see if there are any issues with small businesses. The village of Glen

The city of Edwardsville also strives to make sure that businesses feel welcome and want to be a permanent part of the community. Part of this strategy includes providing businesses with the means and motivation to make their establishments more appealing, boosting both community pride and prosperity. With three tax increment financing (TIF) districts in the city, many businesses are able to improve the façades of their buildings. The TIF district on North Main Street has fostered many reconstruction projects, including new water lines, new sidewalks and new lighting, making the area lively and welcoming. Many national businesses are choosing a home in Edwardsville because of the city’s welcoming and helpful atmosphere. Edwardsville City Planner Scott Hansen says the city’s location in a major interstate corridor, as well as the economic incentives in place, have brought a variety of companies here. “Scott Credit Union is an excellent example of corporate headquarters locating in the I-55 area. Scott Credit Union took advantage of the enterprise zone incentive when locating their building out there. That building has been open about a year and half at this point,” Hansen said. “That is what we envision along that corridor — more regional and national headquarters. National brands including Hershey’s, Dial and Walgreens are just a few examples of what’s already in the Gateway Commerce Center.” More than just an economic plus, newcomers to the community are adding to the region’s recreational options. The new Edison’s Entertainment Complex provides fun for the entire family with bowling, laser tag, arcade games and refreshments. “My understanding is that they were named the number one new family entertainment complex in the U.S. for 2013,” Hansen noted.

SIUE Supports Small Businesses An excellent resource for small business owners is the Illinois Small Business Development Center at SIUE. “We are a federal- and state-funded organization sponsored by SIUE, serving a nine-county Metro East region,” said Patrick McKeehan, SBDC director. “We help entrepreneurs and small business owners throughout our region and consider Edwardsville/Glen Carbon a very thriving economy. There continues to be growth and

business activity in all areas, including retail, restaurants and services, and office operations. We are pleased to see and support this development.” Keeping the SBDC busy are the region’s many inherent assets. “This high level of business activity stems from a stable economic base, the presence of a major university, and a large daytime population for work. We find many of our clients are interested in Edwardsville and Glen Carbon as place for business because of those factors,” McKeehan noted. While the SBDC has a wide variety of programs and services to help small businesses succeed, one of the priorities this year will be microloans. “The real focus in the coming year is going to be on microloans; the ability to provide up to $50,000 in financing to a wide variety of businesses for a wide variety of needs,” McKeehan explained. “It provides another funding option to address immediate and urgent needs and fast-moving business opportunities, or to build up inventory or carry a small business through a rough patch or unforeseen expense. That kind of access to capital is critically important to long-term small business success. At the same time, microloans build up credit history and lending experience that makes these businesses much more bankable in the future.” McKeehan emphasizes the importance of programs like these to the overall prosperity of Edwardsville/Glen Carbon. “Small businesses are the backbone of our region’s economy, and we need to continue find ways to support, encourage and help them thrive.” Indeed, with such a strong support network and an excellent foundation, it is no surprise that Edwardsville/Glen Carbon has a thriving economy that continues to grow.

Stacy said that she also did some research, and beyond the district’s good reputation among local residents, she was impressed by the strong test scores of the district’s high school students compared to those in other districts. The Jesses’ son now attends Goshen Elementary, while their daughter goes to Cassens Elementary. “We grew up in the Midwest and had moved to one of the most beautiful places on earth in Savannah, Georgia, but we absolutely love it here, and the school district is amazing,” Stacy said. “The parents and grandparents are extremely involved in the schools, and if your child is performing at an event, you need to get to that school 15 to 20 minutes early if you want to get a seat. The teachers also know my kids and they pay attention; not just their homeroom teachers, but all of them.” Opportunities for parents to volunteer in the classroom and get to know the families of their children’s classmates also impacted the Jesse family’s choice of the district. I just feel like there’s such an open door policy for parents. You can be as active in the school as you want to be.” When asked about the high level of parental involvement and community buy-in, Hightower explains the close-knit feeling Stacy Jesse describes is by design. “That is not by accident. That is a planned initiative whereby not only parents are involved in the school district, but the whole community is involved. It starts as a community initiative where our schools are open seven days a week for various school activities,” Hightower said. “The sense of community that occurs in the boundaries of District 7 is a sense of togetherness,” Hightower continued. “We started this process about 10 years ago with our kids and employees. “We adapt his talents to the needs of specific patients at the time,” Mestemacher said. Thanks to the success of Magnum’s visits, the pet therapy program at Relais Bonne Eau has expanded to allow visits from other CHAMPtrained dogs. “In addition to Magnum we have six other dogs who come in for visits with their handlers,” Mestemacher explained. “Some people are more comfortable with smaller dogs, so we have a cairn terrier, a sheltie and other breeds.” Mestemacher and Magnum were honored with the Outstanding Volunteer Award at the Annual Hospice Conference of Southwestern Illinois last year. Mestemacher has been a volunteer at Hospice of Southern Illinois for over 15 years and serves as a member of the board of directors. In addition to working with Magnum, she frequently makes presentations at volunteer training classes. “Magnum is a phenomenal animal. He lifts the spirits of the patients at the hospice, and he provides a lot of comfort for the visiting families. It is an honor to help him continue with his great work.”

Adding to the homelike ambience is Magnum, the facility dog, who is a part of the pet therapy program at the hospice home. Carol Mestemacher, Magnum’s handler, emphasizes that his role is “not to help people who are dying, but to bring joy and comfort to people who are still living.” On a typical day Magnum might sit quietly at a bedside providing companionship to a terminally ill patient who reaches out to pet him, or he might careen down the hallway to fetch a ball for a young boy who is visiting his dying grandmother. With his unbridled energy and love for people of all ages, the adorable labradoodle can’t help but make people smile. “His work has become almost second nature to him now,” said Mestemacher. “As soon as Magnum walks through the door of the hospice home he knows what he needs to do, whether it be letting a visiting child pet him, getting a hug from a patient, or simply making the day a little brighter for staff members.” After completing 16 weeks of training at Canine Helpers Allow More Possibilities (CHAMP) in Florissant, Mo., Mestemacher LI VE R EFLECT DW ELL T H R IVE ed embarked on a partnership with the lovable EFLECT DW ELL IVE VE R REFLECT T HT HR RIVE canine changed her life.DW InELL addition to eded thatLILIVE regularly visiting residents at Relais Bonne Eau, LI VE R EFLECT DW ELL T H R IVE ed Mestemacher and Magnum frequently visit priEFLECTappear DWELL IVE VE hospitals, R REFLECT DW T HT HR RIVE vate and atELLcommunity ededhomesLILIVE events, and make presentations for the CHAMP LI VE R EFLECT DW ELL T H R IVE ed program. Township Park Offers the Perfect Playgrounds A tale of two civic organizations, 1,400 volunteers and one generous community.

E

dwardsville Township Community Park, commonly referred to as “Airplane Park” for the elevated Corsair II A-7E fighter plane marking the park’s entrance, has long been a popular gathering spot for Edwardsville and Glen Carbon residents. Township Park offers 27.45 acres of athletic fields, tennis courts, BBQ pavilions, one skating rink and now, two state-of-the-art community-funded playgrounds. In the fall of 2013, Edwardsville Rotarians proudly unveiled the culmination of two years’ worth of fundraising and volunteer efforts. More than 1,000 area residents volunteered their time over the course of seven days to do everything from painting screws to cutting lumber as they took part in the construction of a new playground at Township Park. The project, organized by the Edwardsville Rotary Club, was a repeat of history. Twentytwo years ago the community came together to help build Airplane Park’s first playground. But by 2011, this original wooden structure had deteriorated beyond repair and was removed by Edwardsville Rotary. Realizing the important

E D WA R D S V I L L E / G L E N C A R B O N C H A M B E R O F C O M M E R C E

value the playground holds in the community, Rotary volunteers immediately began planning to replace the playground exactly how the old one was constructed — in an old-fashioned, community, barn-raising kind of way. Representatives from Leathers & Associates, a playground design firm that also consulted on the original playground, traveled to Edwardsville where they, in coordination with Rotarian leadership, sought design input from local children. The final playground design was unveiled in October of 2012. The new design incorporated the children’s various ideas including a pirate ship, tunnels and a twisty slide. Those drawings came to life, executed with perfection by volunteers. Edwardsville Rotary Club is a civic organization dedicated to promoting the mission of “service above self.” This example of community support and initiative has come to be synonymous with the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon community, and the completion of the Rotary playground arrived on the heels of the Junior Service Club’s (JSC) boundless playground project, also located in Edwardsville Township Community Park.

The boundless playground at Township Park is the first public playground of this kind in the St. Louis area. Playgrounds that meet boundless playground standards are sensory-rich, rigorous and challenging for everyone, in addition to featuring accommodations for children with physical, developmental, cognitive and sensory disabilities. The playground design is wheelchair accessible throughout, featuring double wide ramps to the tallest slides and towers, adapted swings and equipment, sensory stimulation activities and easily negotiable terrain. Children with and without disabilities can develop essential skills for life as they learn together through play. JSC’s boundless playground is the result of more than three years of work and a commendable fundraising effort by club members, raising $430,000 for the project. April 19, 2013 saw a task force of more than 400 volunteers and businesses participating in the construction to make the project a reality. This amazing and inclusive play space is a go-to destination in this community. The Junior Service Club of Edwardsville/Glen Carbon is a philanthropic, nonprofit organization comprised of women who are dedicated to making a difference in their community by enriching the lives of others. This example of community collaboration offers the residents of Edwardsville and Glen Carbon a destination state-of-theart recreational space at Township Park and is representative of the commitment to community.

Sunset Hill’s newest addition is the Garden of Reflections, which opened in 2014. The Faithful Friends Pet Garden — where man’s best friend can be memorialized — is another unique offering at Sunset Hill, according to Herr, and in within which reserved spaces free of charge are available for active or retired K-9 dogs and service dogs. “We established The Faithful Friends Pet Garden to accommodate the growing number of requests for pet burial,” said Herr. “Sunset Hill offers one of the region’s finest pet cemeteries. We offer dedicated care and uniform spaces, marked by flower vases, for dogs who have given their lives to protect us.” Herr is a 1966 graduate of Southern Illinois University in mortuary service. He is also the funeral director and owner of Herr Funeral Homes in Collinsville and Caseyville.

obert Herr is invested in building a sense of community in Glen Carbon and has been for 25 years. The owner and funeral director of Sunset Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery, located at 50 Fountain Drive along Route 157 South, purchased the property in 1989 with the dream of providing the Glen Carbon community with a place to remember and honor the legacies of lives well lived. Herr’s commitment to that vision — and his investment in it — continues today. Beyond being a place where loved ones can find eternal rest, Sunset Hill is a tranquil environment in which those who survive can support one another. Although Sunset Hill has been in existence since 1924, substantial development has taken place — at Herr’s direction — since 2005, spurred by the opening of a brand-new, full-service facility. A staff of licensed funeral directors and a full range of services include two funeral visitation rooms and a beautiful entry foyer with a view of Serenity Lake.
