edar Hill has transformed
from a simple rural community to a booming metropolitan city, leading the area in residential and commercial development. Once described as the last small town in Dallas County, its humble beginnings foretold its unique future. The early pioneers of the city established a sense of community, a commitment to preserve the precious land, and a dedication to the prosperity of their home. Because of this foundation, Cedar Hill has seen remarkable growth and expansion.
THE FIRST 100 YEARS: BORN IN NORTH CENTRAL TEXAS
It was the beautiful scenery and rolling hills of what is now Cedar Hill that drew settlers to the area. Settlement began in about 1837 and became well established by 1846. What became Cedar Hill grew to one of the largest settlements in the county.
1837 • Warren Angus Ferris, a native of Buffalo, New York, came to Texas about 1837 to survey what is now Dallas County. Ferris’ description of Cedar Hill is quoted in a book by Susanne Starling titled LAND IS THE CRY!: “It raises out of the plain to a probable five or six hundred feet. The inhabitants on this side of the river possess a treasure in the Cedar Mountain which affords cedar timber in great abundance.” 18411847 • Congress of the Republic of Texas authorizes W.S. Peters to locate colonists in north central Texas. Settlers of Peters’ colony came from Arkansas, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Ohio; the colony brought more than 8,000 people to the Dallas area between 1841 and 1846.

1938 • Cedar Hill is incorporated as a city.
1848 • Village is established on Cedar Mountain. 1850 • The settlement becomes the temporary county seat during the runoff election between Dallas and Hords Ridge. 1852 • Village is named Cedar Hill. First post office opens. 1856 • Tornado destroys the Cedar Mountain Methodist Church, the area’s first church. 1882 • Grand Central & Santa Fe Railroad runs through Cedar Hill for the first time. 1886 • Cedar Hill Independent School District begins. 1888 • First official brick school building is dedicated. 1890 • Cedar Hill’s population reaches 500. 1900 • Six passenger trains stop in Cedar Hill each day on their way between Dallas and Cleburne. 1915 • Cedar Hill has three churches, two banks, and other businesses and professional services.
1940–2009: THE CENSUS TELLS THE STORY
After World War II, Cedar Hill’s population began to take off, significantly increasing with each passing decade. Between 1950 and 1960, the city had doubled the number of its citizens. While Cedar Hill, as well as the surrounding communities, continued to increase in size, more and more people became attracted to the small town. The Cedar Hill Chamber of Commerce was founded, and Methodist Family Center was opened. Educational opportunities and options broadened as colleges and private schools began moving to the area. Within 15 years, Northwood University, Cedar Valley College, and Ashleys Private School came to the area. After the opening of Joe Pool Lake in 1989, the population had escalated to nearly 20,000. Cedar Hill has more than doubled in size since 1990, with its population nearing 50,000. The city’s retail, dining, recreation, and entertainment venues draw more than 175,000 visitors each year.

living? Feel the call to be at one with nature or to just relax beside the calming waters of a picturesque lake? Look no further than Cedar Hill State Park, an oasis of natural beauty and wildlife and the second-most-popular state park in Texas. Only minutes away from Dallas, Cedar Hill State Park stretches across 1,826 acres. With hiking trails, campsites, and the opportunity to view a number of species all along the shores of Joe Pool Lake, the park is a favorite for gatherings and community events. Visitors can take pleasure in a wide range of outdoor recreational activities,

Nearly five miles of hiking trails wind throughout the park, giving hikers the option of enjoying a guided hiking tour for a closer look and deeper understanding of the scenery and wildlife. There are four trails available to trekkers: Overlook, Duck Pond, Talala, and DORBA, the largest of the trails, used for both mountain biking and hiking. The DORBA trail, known as the premier mountain bike trail in North Texas, was named after the volunteers of the Dallas Off Road Bicycle Association. Along with the staff of Cedar Hill State Park, the group developed the trail, designed and built by mountain bikers for mountain bikers. Over 1,200 acres of prime mountain bike landscape intersect 15 miles of intense riding, perfect for the novice or expert. FLORA AND FAUNA
including swimming, boating, fishing, camping, picnicking, mountain biking, and birdwatching. The park is open year-round and welcomes nearly 2 million visitors each year. CAMPING
More than 350 wooded campsites provide day or overnight camping, with each site having water, electricity, a fire-ring, a lantern pole, and a picnic table to satisfy the needs of travelers with a tent or RV. In addition, there are 30 primitive camp sites. Shaded picnic areas are available for picnics and barbecues, with over 200 picnic tables and pavilions and waist-high grills, most in view of Joe Pool Lake.
Home to close to 500 species of birds, the area is ideal for bird-watchers. Additionally, a number of neotropical migrants pass through the area, including the yellow-billed cuckoo and the chuck-will’s widow. At the park you can catch glimpses of ruby-crowned kinglets, the loggerhead shrike, the greater roadrunner, the great horned owl, and many more species, although the “prize” to spot is the painted bunting. Commonly spotted animals include bobcats, coyotes, foxes, squirrels, armadillos, and raccoons. The Cedar Hill region offers a unique ecosystem, as two climates converge here. The park serves as an environmental sanctuary for five endangered native tallgrass prairie remnants, and the park is seasonally painted
• • in vibrant colors by a stunning variety of wildflowers, including trout lilies, purple coneflowers, bluebells, Englemann’s daisies, blue sage, spiderwort, Maximilian sunflowers, iron weed, downy paintbrush, eryngo, and meadow pinks. JOE POOL LAKE
The main attraction of the park, Joe Pool Lake offers over 100 miles of shoreline. With a maximum depth of 75 feet, the 7,500-acre lake has 10 lanes of boat ramps and offers plenty of water recreation options, including boating, fishing, and swimming. A marina offers bait, food, and basic supplies and rents ski boats, jet skis, pontoon boats, and paddle boats. Anglers can fish for white crappie, largemouth bass, and catfish, and the marina offers a pay-to-fish barge. A gravel beach is open for swimming.

PENN FARM AGRICULTURAL HISTORY CENTER
John Anderson Penn was one of the first to settle in the cedar-covered hills of southwest Dallas County, now known as Cedar Hill. Today, the remains of Penn’s original farm can be found on the grounds of Cedar Hill State Park. The old Penn Farm is open seven days a week and reveals a glimpse into how life was more than a century ago. Visitors can explore the old barns, outbuildings, and other reconstructed and historic buildings from the mid-1800s through the mid-1900s that have been restored to recreate the farmstead. The Penn Farm Agricultural History Center has preserved the history of Cedar Hill and the land as it was before it was developed. Educational programs for children and adults are offered throughout the year, including discussions that showcase the Penn Farm and local wildlife and plants. Annual festivals are celebrated on the park grounds, such as Days of Old in October at the Penn Farm Agricultural Center and the Kid Fish Event in June, along with workshops and other community gatherings.

Dogwood Canyon is an educational venue as well. A 6,000-square-foot education and visitors center, the first custom-designed Audubon center in Texas, houses classrooms and large meeting areas. Hiking trails allow nature lovers to connect to the great outdoors as they trek along the spring creek or beaver pond. More than 5,000 children are expected to participate annually in the center’s science programs, which focus on local ecology and habitat study, scientific observation and identification, and stewardship of natural resources. It started as a single dogwood tree planted by local schoolchildren, but in 2010, the Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center at Cedar Hill became a 270-acre oasis of beauty in the midst of a metropolitan area. Located just off FM 1382 between Northwood University and Cedar Hill, Dogwood Canyon is a range of beautiful, untouched land, boasting one of the greatest varieties of natural life in North Texas. A $7.4 million project, the reserve is a result of a partnership between the City of Cedar Hill and Audubon Dallas. Nestled among the Cedar Ridge and Cedar Mountain preserves and Cedar Hill State Park, the canyon adds much to the aesthetics of the city.

Named for its flowering dogwoods, the canyon hosts a remarkable display of migrating and nesting birds and lush vegetation. Plants and animals from east, west, and central Texas converge here, making the canyon the only place in the world where one can find the black-chinned hummingbird of west Texas nesting in the flowering dogwood tree of east Texas. The endangered golden-cheeked warbler; white-eyed, redeyed, and warbling vireos; red-bellied and downy woodpeckers; chuck-will’s widows; and blue-gray gnatcatchers are just a few of the species that grace this environmental sanctuary.
Play some ball, work out, get a full body massage, or throw a party. Or all of the above! The Cedar Hill Recreation Center was uniquely designed to become a space where the community can play, learn, and enjoy. This $7.2 million, 54,000-square-foot facility houses a gym; a strength and cardio area; specialized rooms for child care, games, and aerobics; and multipurpose rental space, including a commercial kitchen. Space is not an issue in the 3,500-square-foot fitness area, which includes 48 cardio machines with personal LCD TVs, 31 strength machines, free weights, and six 52-inch plasma televisions. Residents and non-residents are also invited to enjoy indoor basketball and volleyball courts and a three-lane, 1/13th-mile walking track. Convenient services include locker rooms and showers and drop-in child care.
• • The center also features beautiful views of the park surrounding the facilities. From dance, to cooking, to CPR, to aerobic instruction, the recreation center offers a number of educational and fitness classes to exercise and refine the mind and body. Personal trainers are available to tailor fitness routines or help aspiring athletes to develop in a new sport. And there’s more to come. Voted one of the state’s top public championship courses, Tangle Ridge Golf Course is nestled between Joe Pool Lake and the Mountain Creek Escarpment among the rolling hills of Cedar Hill. In June 2000, the Cedar Hill City Council created the Main Street Development and Preservation Board to provide city staff with direction in the areas of design, revitalization, economic development, promotion, and preservation of downtown cultural heritage.
