Welcome to Beatrice “Roots to Call Home” Welcome! On behalf of the Beatrice Area Chamber of Commerce, I would like to welcome you and thank you for your interest in our community. We have prepared this publication to showcase all that Beatrice has to offer. Our Chamber members and community leaders are proud of our city and continue to invest in its continued success, future growth, and economic development. Beatrice is an ideal place to live, work, shop, and raise a family, from the historic homes that grace the streets to the progressive business community and the award-winning community theater in downtown Beatrice. Beatrice is the seat of Gage County’s government, and the courthouse is on the historic registry. Add to

all this our education system, which starts with pre-kindergarten and goes through vocational school, and who could resist being proud to promote Beatrice as “Roots to Call Home”? Beatrice is not only a great place to live, but also a great place to work. We are located near highways 136 and 77, and businesses appreciate the convenient accessibility. Beatrice is home to many wonderful businesses that work hard to provide all the amenities of a large city while maintaining its small-town appeal. Beatrice has a great Industrial Park that services over 12 manufacturers, which creates over 2,500 jobs. Beatrice has a dynamic Main Street organization focused on revitalizing the downtown district. They promote a positive image of downtown by preserving Beatrice’s unique historic character, strengthening the district’s economic base, and emphasizing downtown as the center of community activity. Mayor Schuster Talks About Beatrice Beatrice Mayor Dennis Schuster says he’d like to see Beatrice become a bigger, cleaner city with more amenities, like larger restaurants and stores. “I would like to see us add a couple thousand more people in the next 10 years,” Schuster says. “It takes that to bring in the larger retailers. And to get people you need jobs. You have to have some way of paying the bills.” Schuster notes that local community and business leaders are already working to achieve that goal, and he applauds local efforts to teach people to start their own businesses and create jobs. “The city has worked with the Chamber of Commerce and Southeast Community College to produce a training program for entrepreneurs,” Schuster notes. “It’s tough starting a business. You can use all the help you can get. I wish I had these people to answer my questions when I started a business 26 years ago.” The mayor is also pleased with efforts to beautify the city and provide more recreation. “On average, the city clears away one abandoned house each month,” Schuster says. “We’ve also hired a code enforcement officer to ensure people are taking appropriate care of their property. “The new water park and swimming pool in the city are very positive developments,” Schuster continues. “We have received good reviews in the community and from people from other towns who visit the water park. This kind of development is characteristic of the family-friendly community we’re always working to improve.” Indeed, Schuster especially enjoys events that bring the families and friends of Beatrice together. “A highlight of the year for me is the annual Homestead Days in Beatrice,” he says. “It brings everybody out. It’s a unique thing to see that many people together socializing. There’s lots of energy in the air during the festival.” 4 Beatrice Area Chamber of Commerce

The new, multi-million-dollar Northgate Crossing development, a regional health care, commercial, and technology park in Beatrice, broke ground in July 2008. The Beatrice Community Hospital and Health Center Board of Directors has approved the purchase of 45 acres in Northgate Crossing for a new hospital. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have purchased the land, we are in the process of hiring an architect, and we are moving forward with the hope of breaking ground on the hospital soon,â&#x20AC;? says Beatrice Community Hospital Director of Marketing Diane Vicars. The hospital is the first entity to announce plans to purchase land in the park. This highprofile tenant is expected to act as a magnet for other businesses, starting with other health care providers and leading to restaurants, retail, lodging, and even parks and sports venues. Northgate Crossing may also hold potential for residential development. Northgate Crossing is a combined effort of Gage County Economic Development, the

City of Beatrice, Beatrice Community Hospital, and the private development firm WRK LLC. Will Scott, of WRK, said the team is working to create a master-planned economic engine for southeast Nebraska. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As the City of Beatrice continues to grow north, and the City of Lincoln continues to grow south, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s our belief that this exciting project will contribute in powerful ways to future growth patterns and business opportunities for Beatrice and surrounding communities,â&#x20AC;? Partnerships Bring Business Boom The City of Beatrice, Gage County Economic Development Inc., the Beatrice Area Chamber of Commerce, and Southeast Community College have partnered to bring business and investment to the region. Whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s opening doors to performance-based incentives, creating education and training for 21stcentury employees, developing relationships with site selection consultants, marketing a pro-business climate, or assisting in business retention and expansion, it takes teamwork. When Precise Manufacturing approached city officials in 2006 about purchasing lots at the Gage County Industrial Site, local leaders sprang into action. The Beatrice City Council approved the use of $400,000 of

business LB840 funds* to install infrastructure at Gage County Industrial Site. Precise Fabrication moved into a new 41,250-square-foot facility in October 2007 and has created 21 new jobs. Gage County Economic Development Inc. Director of Business and Industry Terri L. Dageford says long-term partnership is key to helping businesses such as Precise Fabrication succeed. “Long-standing community cooperation is what makes our community a great place to live and work,” Dageford says. “Economy changes and trends change; we need to continue to move forward, building a base that will sustain growth for generations. Our partnerships have brought about the investment of millions of dollars in the community in the past five years. Every dollar invested multiplies rapidly. For example, 100 new manufacturing jobs create 115 secondary jobs, with an aggregate personal income of $9 million — which in turn creates retail sales of $4 million.” Gage County Economic Development engages in discussions with larger businesses

and industries, while the Beatrice Area Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Beatrice work with smaller businesses. In both instances, collaboration is a necessary component. Beatrice Area Chamber of Commerce President Lori Warner says the Chamber partnered with Southeast Community College to create five new businesses between fall 2007 and fall 2008. “We sat down with the business instructors at Southeast and asked them to develop courses to help entrepreneurs,” Warner says. “The college developed an academy offering nine hours of instruction. Over 50 students attended classes and workshops starting in fall of 2007. Grant funds helped with tuition.” The partnership helped the five businesses create 40 new jobs at a combined startup investment of $500,000. The businesses include a staffing service, motor sports retail, a handyman service, and a restaurant. Warner says the Chamber has also used grant money to hire a business development specialist on a short-term basis. “With the help of the business specialist we made 175 contacts with people interested in starting businesses,” Warner notes. “Our goal was to create 10 new jobs the first year. Instead, we created 40.” *Nebraska’s Local Option Municipal Economic Development Act (LB 840), passed in 1991, authorizes incorporated cities and villages to collect and appropriate local sales and/or property tax dollars for economic development, if approved by the local voters. Beatrice voters were among the first citizens in the state to implement the act. They have voted to extend LB840 to the year 2013.

Site Selection Recognizes Gage County Growth

Site Selection magazine ranked Beatrice as one of the top communities for economic growth in its March 8, 2008, edition. The magazine compared Beatrice to 6,000 other “micropolitans” (communities with a population of 50,000 or less). Site Selection recognizes economic developers for the number of projects and investments made in their respective communities. Gage County Economic Development assisted in renewable energy ventures, business expansions, new construction, and acquisitions totaling over $232 million.

Impact of Recession Slower for Nebraska?

The Nebraska Business Forecast Council says the rising world demand for agriculture imports and the decline of the U.S. dollar will help the state outperform the national economy. According to the Associated Press, the council projects Nebraska farm income will rise 24.7 percent in 2008, hitting a record $4.5 billion. The Bureau of Business Research at the University of NebraskaLincoln published the council’s projections in a research compilation titled Business in Nebraska.

2007 Report: Beatrice Community Hospital and Health Center

A Tradition of Caring By Diane Vicars, Beatrice Community Hospital

History The hospital’s beginning dates back to July 1, 1899, when Dr. Harry Hepperlen opened the first hospital in Beatrice. Hepperlen sold the hospital to the United Brethren Church in 1909, and in 1914, it was purchased by the Lutheran Hospital Society and became known as Lutheran Hospital. At about the same time, Mennonite families who had moved to the Beatrice area from Prussia were searching for a way of thanking God and their fellow man for the privilege of living in a free America and in the Beatrice community. Their answer: build a hospital. The Mennonite Deaconess Home and Hospital was dedicated on July 16, 1911. In 1982, Lutheran Hospital was purchased by Mennonite Hospital, and the combined hospitals became known as the Beatrice Community Hospital and Health Center.

Services Today, the 25-bed critical-access hospital and its long-term-care facility, Parkview Center, employ more than 440 people, with 18 active medical staff and four full-time emergency room physicians. In addition to the community’s independent medical clinics, BCHHC operates the Beatrice Children’s Clinic within the hospital; a rural medical clinic in Wymore, Neb.; and a specialty clinic that brings to the hospital physicians offering care in the areas of pulmonology, oncology, nephrology, neurology, vascular, urology, and cardiology. The hospital conducted a community survey in 2005 and developed a comprehensive strategic plan, expanding women’s services by bringing two female ob-gyns to work in the Women’s Health Center of Beatrice and implementing a hospitalist program to stabilize acute inpatient services (hospitalists are physicians who specialize in treating hospital patients).

It commemorates the many impacts of the Homestead Act of 1862. Signed into law by President Lincoln on May 20, 1862, the Homestead Act offered 160 acres of free land to any qualified individual willing to live on, farm, and improve it for five years. Single women and widows, most immigrants, and African Americans all qualified. The Act became effective on January 1, 1863, and remained active until 1986. Over 2 million individuals and families claimed land under the Homestead Act, settling approximately 270 million acres. Today, there may be as many as 93 million homesteader descendants throughout the world. The Act increased America’s agricultural production and

Marooned Steamboat Got Beatrice Moving When the westbound steamboat Hannibal marooned on a sandbar near St. Joseph, Missouri, in the spring of 1857, it was an unfortunate day for the captain, but a boon for future residents of Beatrice, Nebraska. Thirty-five of the passengers formed the Nebraska Townsite Association and set out on foot to find a new home. They chose a rise with seven picturesque hills on a bend of the Big Blue River. Abundant forests provided timber for the first cabins. The population grew to 80 in three years and boomed in 1871 with the arrival of rail service. Julia Beatrice Kinney, daughter of an early Nebraska Townsite Association President, lent the town her middle name (pronounced Be-AT-rice). Other prominent historical attractions in Beatrice include:

expanded the Industrial Revolution. It brought immigrants from dozens of nations to America in search of land and homes. American Indians were further displaced from many of their traditional lands, and many Western ecosystems were forever altered. Entrance to the monument, museums, exhibits, and all events is free. Over 2.5 miles of walking trails wind through prairie and woodland, and there are 100 acres of restored tallgrass prairie. The Homestead Education Center features a bookstore, large farm implement exhibit, a log home built in 1867, picnic facilities, and traveling exhibitions. The one-room Freeman School, constructed in 1872 and still on its original location, is a reminder of the importance of public education on the frontier. The monument is open every day except Thanksgiving day, December 25, and January 1. Special events take place throughout the year.

Sponsoring a variety of annual events, planting flowers on street corners, and providing design assistance to area businesses are among Main Street Beatriceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s successes at promoting the town while preserving and celebrating its beauty and historic charm. â&#x20AC;&#x153;One of our goals is to beautify downtown,â&#x20AC;? says Main Street Beatrice Executive Director Angela Fortier. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have buildings that are 130 years old and buildings that are 25 years old. To give the district a unified look, we chose period dĂŠcor for our street lights and benches. Experts in history, architecture, and design volunteer

Visitors can enjoy over 100 feet of interior murals, plus other visual and written displays. Special programs are held on the fourth Sunday of every month from February through October.

4002-223-6630 • www.onestopcenter.net “The overarching purpose of the center is to develop collaboration among agencies for better utilization of available assistance and resources,” says Pat Timm, retired administrator of One Stop. “This provides individuals with the basic necessities of food and shelter, if needed, while providing opportunities for education and training that will lead to a more self-sufficient individual or family.” The center houses 20 different social services under one roof, ranging from the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, which provides programs such as food assistance and children’s health insurance, to Community Action programs and early childhood education. The center’s college campus location familiarizes consumers with opportunities to further their education. Even Start helps adults complete or fine-tune

their high school education while their children are engaged in an educational program such as Head Start. One Stop provides non-credit courses in basic skills, workplace literacy, General Education Diploma preparation, U.S. Citizenship, and English as a Second Language. Vocational rehabilitation and job placement services for adults are also available.

Power to the People Utilities Aid Community

Norris Public Power District donated the manpower that won a $300,000 grant to provide new MRI equipment for Beatrice Community Hospital in 2007. Norris has established a revolving loan fund to promote rural economic development. In 2001, Norris introduced Operation Roundup, which allows customers to round their utility bill up to the next dollar, with the difference going to area charities. As of July 2008, Norris had donated more than $265,000 to various community organizations through Operation Roundup.

“Norris will now be able to play a bigger role in rural economic development, and we look forward to assisting other recipients in the future,” notes Andrea Schafer, manager of public relations and economic development for Norris. Both the Norris Public Power District and the Nebraska Public Power District also provide economic development benefits to the region. Filley Stone Barn 402-228-1679 • www.byjake.com/gagecountymuseum The three-story native limestone barn in Filley (the largest of its kind in Nebraska) kept a farm open when drought/grasshoppers drove others off the land. The town and barn are named for Elijah Filley, who built the barn in 1874 and donated the land for the town in 1882. Special group tours of the barn are available, and living history demonstrations are held here in October.

Krider Hill Take Highway 77 South of Beatrice to Highway 112. This beautiful highway to Odell, Nebraska, was once part of the Oto Indian Reservation. Cross the railroad tracks and proceed up the hills to enjoy the scenic view. Legend has it Krider Hill is the burial site for an Oto Chief.
