nursing, allied health, police and fire safety, hospitality, dietetics, and railroad operations. Recently, TCC was approved to offer classes toward a new Associate of Arts in Teaching degree, designed both to ease the transition for students transferring to a four-year baccalaureate degree and to help alleviate the state’s teacher shortage. The streamlined program will assist students who transfer to Texas four-year colleges/universities, since these institutions will accept the associate degree as a single block of credits, thus avoiding loss of credit courses. These students are also given early opportunities to spend time in actual classrooms. TCC students have opportunities to study and learn in many different venues, including day, evening, weekend, short-term, Internet, distance-learning, and instructional television courses. A premier source of pride for TCC is the Cornerstone Program, a challenging, humanities-based honors curriculum for advanced students working toward bachelor’s degrees. The program leads to an Associate in Arts degree through four Cornerstone courses in history, fine arts, philosophy, and sociology, all of which emphasize critical thinking skills. Last fall, TCC opened its doors to a record credit enrollment of 34,854 students. Enrollment records have become the norm at TCC. Since 1999, fall credit enrollment has jumped more than 33 percent — almost 10,000 students. TCC’s academic excellence and tuition that’s lower than at neighboring universities keep enrollment high. In the fall of 2006, there were 261 students in the Senior Education Program in classes of a variety of interests and topics on all four TCC campuses. On the other end of the age spectrum, 1,200 youngsters participated in TCC’s popular three-week summer enrichment program, College for Kids. College for Kids is committed to academic TCC’s College For Kids offers summer enrichment programs for high-achievers starting in third grade.
