Philosophy for Chorlton Richard Gore

I am confident that readers would agree with the idea that Chorlton is a really great place to live and has just about everything you could wish for to lead the “good life”. Great shopping facilities including many great independent shops; a wide range of excellent bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs; sporting and leisure facilities; folk clubs etc. So, what could be missing? What could be added to this rich mix? If a community philosophy group in which to have open and thought provoking dialogues and discussions about the “big issues of life”…appeals to you (including our different takes on what constitutes “the good life”!!) then read on!

Nothing New The idea of philosophical discussion groups taking place in a social setting is nothing new. The ancient Greeks often engaged in philosophical dialogue as part of their cultural pursuits, which enriched Greek life. More

recently in the cafés and bars of Paris and London a growing trend has been to devote a regular evening or daytime session to philosophical discussion. Nearer to home, our cousins down the road in Liverpool have developed “Philosophy in Pubs”, PIPs for short, a community group, whose aims are to promote and encourage critical thinking, philosophical enquiry and debate in social settings. Regular philosophical enquiries take place in more than 10 pubs across the city. You can find out all about PIPs by visiting their website at www.philosophyinpubs.org.uk Community Philosophy groups have also been set up in many other parts of the country: Oldham and Rochdale, York and Newcastle, and sunny Brighton to name just a few. Now… fellow Chorltonites, if they can do it in Athens, London, Paris, Liverpool and Oldham…why not here in Chorlton?

What is Community Philosophy? Its aim is simple: to provide a safe space and clear structure in which people can express and discuss their ideas and thoughts, and to learn from each other in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Community Philosophy has largely developed out of Philosophy for Children (sometimes abbreviated to P4C) initiated by Professor Matthew Lipman and colleagues at Montclair State College, New Jersey. Lipman’s original project, conceived in the late 1960’s in the wake of student unrest, was to encourage children and citizens to be more reasonable – that is, ready to reason and be reasoned with. Like the ancient Greek philosophers, he saw this as the path to the ultimate goal of education: practical wisdom, or good judgement. In creating the approach Lipman drew on the tradition of philosophical dialogue developed by the Greek philosopher, Socrates (469-399 BCE).

“The unexamined life is not worth living.” How does it work? The approach starts with the consideration by the group of a “stimulus” or starting point for thought and reflection. Lots of different things can be used (poems, songs, texts, DVD clips, real objects, newspaper articles) but they work best when they will provide for a variety of different responses and opinions. Participants create their own philosophical questions based on the stimulus and then choose one question for an “in depth” enquiry.

7

“I think I’ve got what philosophy is. You don’t have to answer the question, sometimes there are no answers.” “I have been able to see things from other people’s points of view and have sometimes changed my own initial point of view, as a result.” Respect for others and their opinions are a fundamental requirement of the group as it encourages people to put forward their views without fear of ridicule or intimidation.

When and where will it happen in Chorlton? We will hold a first session for those interested in being

involved on Tuesday 16th November, in the upstairs room at the Lloyds Pub, Wilbraham Rd, Chorlton. The session will

Internet Safety First Children today are growing up with the Internet as a source of information and fun. It has become the leading communication medium for people of all ages. We all have to work hard to be safe on the web. It’s a fact of modern life that we all have to protect ourselves against threats via the internet. It is especially important that children are protected against those threats, at the same time as they are trained to use the internet safely. The best way to protect them is with a combination of measures provided by grown-ups, as well as learnt, safe behaviour. As parents and carers we should say to children: “I will help you to be safe, at the same time as you behave safely.” One of the best ways of protecting the whole household is to put in some security measures at the point where the internet comes into your home – the router. A company called OpenDNS offers the Family Shield – safety for the whole household, and it’s free! Most of us have a router because we have a wireless network in our home. You need a router

(not a modem) to be able to take advantage of the OpenDNS service. Basically, it stops nasty websites being loaded, and has some other security features. Please go to this link for further information: http://www.opendns.com/ familyshield I strongly recommend it. I tested it, and it would not let me into Page 3 of the Sun newspaper, and definitely stopped me ogling the delights of PlayBoy – and quite right too! Now for something completely different. When you use the search facility in Google, say, you get a list of links to websites. But are there any nasty ones lurking, looking all innocent and helpful? You bet! That’s where WOT comes in. WOT stands for “Web of Trust”, and is software that sits in your web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome). When you do a search it puts a comforting green circle next to the OK sites, a red one next to the dodgy places, and an amber one where it does not have sufficient information yet to make a judgement. It’s very easy to load, and gives you some reassurance that you

are not going to be deceived into going somewhere you’d best avoid. There are separate versions for other browsers (e.g., Firefox, Chrome). Next, it’s security software. I’m an advocate for free software if it’s as good as or better than paid-for alternatives. At the moment the best free security software is from Microsoft – Microsoft Security Essentials (or MSE for short). MSE is getting rave reviews, and I use it for my personal PCs. If you are using Windows XP, I would recommend a software firewall as well. Firewalls control what comes into and goes out from your computer. The one that comes with XP is not so good, and I’d recommend ZoneAlarm to complement MSE. If you have Windows Vista or Windows 7 you have a good firewall built in. Just make sure it is activated by going to check at the Security Center. Finally, some internet browsers are more secure than others. Google Chrome is getting a good reputation for being extra secure, and I always use it for things like internet banking. This is all serious stuff, but let’s not lose sight of the fun to be had from the web. Yes, there are dangers, but with a few safety measures, we can all be assured of danger-free enjoyment. Book Reviews from Chorlton Bookshop

his flat. As With “The Time Traveler’s Wife” Niffenegger once again explores the themes of love and loss but skilfully wraps a ghost story around them. This is a perfect book for curling up on the sofa on a cold and misty autumnal evening!

Pippi Longstocking

Her Fearful Symmetry

by Astrid Lindgren & Lauren Child (9-12 years)

by Audrey Niffenegger

For fans of Audrey Niffennegger this novel was a long time coming. The wait was worth it; yet again she has produced an original and moving story. Julia and Valentina Poole are identical twins who have just been left a London flat by a long lost aunt. Aged 21 the girls are still looking for something to do with their lives and decide a move to London would be perfect despite strong reservations from their mother. Their mother incidentally, was the sister of the long lost aunt. This is just the first in a long line of mysterious occurrences. The flat itself is next door to Highgate cemetery which gives the story its ghostly backdrop and gives the reader sneaky clues to the story’s eventual outcome. Along the way Valentina and Julia meet a range of characters. Two of these include the dead aunt’s mysterious toy boy and an OCD sufferer who is unable to leave

Alyss’ followers including White Chess Pieces and her childhood friend, Dodge. Both boys and girls (and grown ups too!) will enjoy reading this book.

The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor

“You think you know the true story of Alice in Wonderland? Well think again.” Beddor manages to successfully take the classic Alice in Wonderland story and turn it on its head to create just as imaginative a tale of adventure full of rich plot twists, colourful inventions, and a fully developed group of characters to keep a reader of any age interested. Alyss Heart is set to become Queen of Wonderland until her evil Aunt Redd attacks the Queendom to forcefully take the throne, causing Alyss to flee to our world. The story follows Alyss as she, trapped here, struggles to live in a strange Victorian England, whilst also following Redd’s years of tyranny in Wonderland and a rebel group of

For fans of classic children’s fiction this is a marriage made in heaven. Charlie and Lola creator Lauren Child has created a full range of new illustrations for Lindgren’s extravagant tales of Pippi Longstocking, first published almost 70 years ago. Pippi, who is both phenomenally strong and immensely rich, lives on her own since her seafaring father went missing. Along with local children Tommy and Annika, and her wayward pet monkey Mr Nilsson, Pippi is drawn into an endless stream of peculiar adventures. Child clearly knows a thing or two about remarkable little girls - aside from Charlie’s little sister Lola, she also invented Clarice Bean - and her vivid illustrations are a fine match to Lindgren’s writing, breathing fresh life into an old favourite. Pippi newcomers may well find this combination irresistable.

From Rationing to Recession Karen Dyson The Citizens Advice service is more than 70 years old. It swung into action on 4th September 1939, the day after the Second World War was declared. 200 bureaux, staffed entirely by volunteers, opened their doors that day. Services were taken out to wherever people needed them, and as well as having offices, bureaux ran from horseboxes, ambulances and pubs. They provided valuable help with things like war benefits and pensions, housing, rationing and even growing your own vegetables as part of the war effort! After the war, they continued to work with organisations such as Red Cross to help repatriate refugees and reunite families. Today we have around 400 bureaux. Taking services to where people need them most is still a key issue, so they also provide advice from over 5000 outreach venues. Manchester Citizens Advice Bureau has been recently been given new funding. This means our services are secure for

at least the next three years. We can expand our existing bureaux and open new ones – and we need volunteers to help us to do this. In Manchester, we will have six Community Legal Advice Centres which we will run along with agencies such as Shelter and legal aid solicitors, and will provide outreach services at a wide variety of locations. We are particularly looking for Triage Interviewers. They carry out brief interviews with new clients to help them decide the best way for them to get the advice they need. This could be self help, an appointment in-bureaux or a referral to a specialist organisation. Volunteers are still very much part of the service, and across the country, over 80% of our workers are volunteers. The benefits of volunteering include training and work experience, learning new skills, meeting new people and the opportunity to make a real difference in your community. Effective advice has been shown to improve health,

reduce stress, improve family relations and equip people to deal with their own situations in future. You also have the opportunity to influence the policies and procedures that affect people’s lives. CAB workers use case studies and stories based on clients’ experiences – and their own experiences of advising them – to carry out social policy work. Nationally, over 45,000 client stories are gathered every year, and they form a powerful body of evidence for parliamentary work and campaigning.
